The Mike Hosking Breakfast
Mike's Minute: I admire Nico Porteous' call to retire

The Mike Hosking Breakfast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 16, 2025 2:10 Transcription Available

Last week when Shaun Johnson was in the studio, we were discussing retirement. Not mine, but that's of growing fascination to me these days. When do you know? If you aren't getting cancelled, or run out of town, or falling apart, how do you know? John Key famously had nothing left in the tank. Johnson was explaining it was important for him to go out when he decided, not when he was dropped. The TV stuff he now does was something he was interested in, but didn't know how it would unfold. Johnson at 34 years old seemed young enough. I look at people like Tom Brady in his mid 40's. One more season, one more chance at greatness, and he goes out a hero with another Super Bowl win. I look at Aaron Rodgers, who has signed at Pittsburgh this year. He looks like he has gone a season too long. He looks like he is looking for work, when he should really be looking for life after football. Maybe this season will make a fool of me, but I doubt it. But all of that pales in comparison when it comes to Nico Porteous. He is walking away from his snow sports career at 23 years old. He doesn't want to use the word retirement, but equally he won't be at the Olympics anymore. As our most successful ever snow sport athlete, it is over. He also doesn't know what he is going to do, or what his future looks like. But he has enjoyed videos and production so maybe that's a path. How do you decide that at 23 years old? How do you know that it's right? Who advises you? How do you know they're right? Having spent your entire life aiming for the one big thing, sporting excellence, how do you pull the cord when you have, if you want, years to go? Are you one of those people who can walk away from that level of exhilaration and success and not look back? Is now knowing what's next part of the thrill? Will you keep the scrapbook of memories? Will you tell your kids or grandkids about the halfpipe? Will they ask how come Dad can do flips on skis when they first go to Cardrona? What a big call with so much ahead of him. Or was what he did plenty? Is that a good way to see life? I admire him. Is he reckless? Could be. Maybe he is an insightful genius. Either way, I admire him. At 23 years old I would have tortured myself, and probably still wouldn't have done what he has. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As you know this podcast is where we challenge the status quo and explore what's possible in the world of high-performance sport. Today, I want to dive into a concept that's set to redefine the very foundation of competition, human development, and the role of sport in our society: The Gaia Games. If you've ever felt that the current sports system is broken—driven by short-term success, burnout, and transactional relationships—you're not alone. But what if we could reimagine sport as a regenerative, holistic, and deeply human experience? That's what the Gaia Games are all about. The Gaia Games Sport has the power to shape culture, inspire action, and elevate human consciousness—yet the current system is broken. Elite sport is often driven by medals, money, and ego, leaving behind the deeper purpose of play, connection, and transformation. The Gaia Games is reimagining sport—not just as competition, but as a regenerative force for people and the planet. Rooted in sustainability, indigenous wisdom, and collective consciousness, this movement blends high-performance excellence with grassroots inclusivity, creating a new global model for sport. And this is why I'm so excited to share this conversation. The Gaia Games is more than an event—it's a vision for the future of sport. There's been two OnlyFans stars absolutely dominating (not literally, actually) the UK tabloid headlines, Twitter trending topics bar and the girls' group chats in the past eight weeks, and their names are Bonnie Blue and Lily Phillips. The latter kicked off December's discourse by starring in a YouTube documentary about having sex with 100 men in a day while the former stole the show by live-blogging her own sex marathon, shagging 1000 blokes in 24 hours. The acts have led to condemnations across the board from SWerfs and incels to the alt right and This Morning hosts. Should we be worried about what acts like these mean for female objectification? Why is everyone only worried about the ramifications of sex work when middle class, white women do it? What's up! It's episode 102 of Payne Points of Wealth and tech is dead! Our prophecy has come true. We've warned you about tech for a long time. Meanwhile, markets are rallying hard here and the economy is actually growing despite what all those economists have been telling you. Is this just a big fake-out? Is this a bear market rally? Are we going into a big recession next year? We're going to give you our 2¢ on that today. We're going to tell you exactly how to play all the market moves and how to look at the economy right now correctly. We're also going to talk about financial planning, physical training, and what they have in common. We've got a great show. Check it out! You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Economists are so sus! [1:06] Is the S&P overweighted in tech? [4:01] You make the most $$ in a bear market [7:12] The Tipping Point [12:08] There is no wisdom on the internet [13:11] Help to do the right thing when it feels wrong [16:03] Hidden Facts of Finance [21:52] Are you missing a rally because you're overweight in mega-cap tech stocks? If you look at the S&P 500, it accounts for something like 25% but the entire weighting is only in six or seven stocks. That's the problem, the S&P is so grossly overweight in tech that you're not benefiting from this rally. What blew our minds looking at the numbers this past week is that old-school boring value stocks like JP Morgan, Coca-Cola, and Pepsi are only down 5%, but tech growth stocks are down 30%. That's a 25% spread!  This tells you that right now it's not about being in or out of the market, it's about having the right portfolio. If you're diversified you're not down that much this year and that's the whole point. You have to spread your risk out. The overall market is telling us that some parts of the economy aren't doing great like tech, but some parts of the economy are doing really, really well. It's like we are experiencing rolling recessions, not an all-or-none proposition. This week on the tipping point: Financial Fitness Trainers There are a lot of principles that we can apply from the fitness world to your retirement or financial independence plan. What we've learned in our boutique firm, Payne Capital Management, is that our role as financial advisors is a lot like being a personal financial trainer. The similarities are remarkable. You definitely work out better when you have a personal trainer. You get in shape faster and you have less injury because they get you to focus on every part of your body. They don't limit you to what you would limit yourself to. That's what happens when you're investing. "Well, I'm not gonna invest in that area because I lost money there once." or "I'm a brave investor, I'm going to roll the dice and go a hundred percent in crypto or the arc fund." You make a lot of mistakes because you don't know what you don't know.  This week's hidden facts of finance John Deere and Company has 50 autonomous tractors in its global testing fleet but intends to ramp up commercial production next year. Money funds are now paying a lot more than bank savings accounts, which yield an average of 1.09% according to bankrate.com. Fidelity's tax-exempt money market fund may be the best bet if you're in a high tax bracket, it pays 1.75%, which is the equivalent of getting 3.43% if you're in a high tax bracket. That's not bad for money just sitting in cash. Renewable energy could account for 60% of power generation in Western Europe and 35% in the US by the year 2030. Up from 35% and 23% today, respectively. Ironically, high fossil fuel prices are the biggest reason that energy producers have the ability to fund the energy transition to cleaner alternatives. Schwab generated 132 million off money market funds in the third quarter up from 29 million a year ago when the company had to issue waivers to compensate for ultra-low money market yields. It's incredible how much yields have gone up in the last couple of months. In this episode, I'm joined by Rhiannon Linington-Payne – current Welsh International 400m athlete, Head of Competition at Welsh Athletics and National-level hockey player, who highlights her experiences with disordered eating, and how sport played a facilitative role within her recovery. At an influential, impressionable age, Rhiannon found herself within a harmful, competitive environment where weight loss was celebrated and disordered, destructive behaviours were normalised… thus triggering her unhealthy habits and mentality towards her food and body. She discusses the inadequate support she received when she developed the courage to seek support. Disappointingly, weight gain and increasing caloric intake was the primary focus… the mental complications and underlying psychological factors were seemingly ignored. And despite the years of growth, it's a continuing battle, where voices and thoughts resurface. I suppose understandably as it was so heavily ingrained for a prolonged period. However, the performance element of her sport was the driver and motivation towards recovery. Determined to ensure her behaviours were healthy to allow progression within her training and subsequent competitions… wanting to fuel her body, to feel strong, powerful, capable, and successfully achieve in her sport. Thus, highlighting one of the many positive attributions of sport participation. We also discuss the empowering nature of strength training. The overwhelming sense of accomplishment, the release, and satisfying progression… again acting as a motivator to remain healthy mentally and psychologically. And finally, we relate on our continues frustrations of gym closures and the disappointment within our government with their refusal to acknowledge how much these environments contribute to positive physical and psychological health.

Join Cameron and me as we discuss his idea, that students should be able to enroll in neighboring schools to chase their passions! Cameron Brown is currently a senior at Western Kentucky University and a student teacher at Barren County High School. Initially attending WKU to obtain a degree in sports broadcasting and journalism, Brown quickly realized that this was not the career path for him. For four years, Brown—a 2017 graduate of Webster County High School—served as the sportswriter for the Journal-Enterprise in Webster County and also helped cover Trojan sports on the radio for his alma mater. During this time, Brown thoroughly enjoyed working with all of the student-athletes and realized that education was the correct career choice for him. He began working as a substitute teacher in Webster County in February 2019, and this only confirmed his passion for the profession. As Brown graduates from WKU in May of this year, his goal is to bring positive energy into the classroom every single day and push students to be the very best that they can be. His bigEDidea can potentially give students every opportunity to be fully prepared for life after high school—whether they are going to college or directly into the workforce. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bigedidea/message
