Content warning for discussion of genocide, torture, mutilation, rape, and slavery Hey, Hi, Hello, this is the History Wizard and welcome back for Day 11 of Have a Day w/ The History Wizard. Thank you to everyone who tuned in for Day 10 last week, and especially thank you to everyone who rated and/or reviewed the podcast. I hope you all learned something last week and I hope the same for this week. This week marks the 3rd part of our mini series of currently ongoing genocides and humanitarian crises. Episode 2 was on Palestine, Episode 11 was on Congo, today's episode will be on Sudan. The nation of Sudan is currently dealing with, among other things we'll cover in detail later in this episode, the largest deplacement campaign of anywhere on the planet with over 9 million people being displaced from their homes by war and genocide. It always feels a little weird transitioning into this part of the episode, but it's now time for the Alchemist's Table. I've invented nearly 90 cocktails over the past 2 years and this one remains my very favorite. It's called the No True Scotsman. Take 2 oz of your scotch whiskey of choice, though I'd recommend a light Islay scotch, something like a Bowmore, or maybe a Campbeltown like Glen Scotia. Then add .75 oz of Frangelico, 1 oz of Maple syrup. Shake this like your life depends on it and pour over ice. Top the drink with ginger beer and enjoy. Now, fortified as we are by uisce beatha, the waters of life, let's get into it. So, what is happening in Sudan, right now? A civil war officially started between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the the Rapid Support Forces that grew out of the Janjaweed militias that were so prevalent in the Darfur Genocide. The war officially began on 15 April 2023 and is still ongoing. But, in order to understand what is happening right now, we need to understand what was happening in the 19th century under British and Egyptian colonialism in the region. So, let's starts at as much of the beginning as we can. Let's start at the Mahdist War. Following Muhammad Ali's invasion (no, a different Muhammad Ali) in 1819, Sudan was governed by an Egyptian administration. Throughout the period of Egyptian rule, many segments of the Sudanese population suffered extreme hardship because of the system of taxation imposed by the central government. Under this system, a flat tax was imposed on farmers and small traders and collected by government-appointed tax collectors from the Sha'iqiyya tribe of northern Sudan. Throughout the century, and especially after Egypt was floundering to pay the costs of the Suez Canal, Britain got more and more involved. In the late 19th century a war broke out between the Mahdist Sudanese, led by Muhammad Ahmad bin Abdullah, who had proclaimed himself the "Mahdi" of Islam (the "Guided One"), and the forces of the Khedivate of Egypt, initially, and later the forces of Britain. Eighteen years of war resulted in the creation of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan (1899–1956), a de jure condominium of the British Empire, and the Kingdom of Egypt, in which Britain had de facto control over Sudan. Sudan officially voted for independence in 1956 and became its own independent republic. Although it achieved independence without conflict, Sudan inherited many problems from the condominium. Chief among these was the status of the civil service. The government placed Sudanese in the administration and provided compensation and pensions for British officers of Sudan Political Service who left the country; it retained those who could not be replaced, mostly technicians and teachers. Khartoum achieved this transformation quickly and with a minimum of turbulence, although southerners resented the replacement of British administrators in the south with northern Sudanese. To advance their interests, many southern leaders concentrated their efforts in Khartoum, where they hoped to win constitutional concessions. Although determined to resist what they perceived to be Arab imperialism, they were opposed to violence. Most southern representatives supported provincial autonomy and warned that failure to win legal concessions would drive the south to rebellion. To understand the issues in Sudan we need to understand that, ultimately, this is a religious and ethnic conflict between the mostly Islamic North and the largely Christian and animist South regions in the nation of Sudan. On November 17, 1958, the day parliament was to convene, a military coup occurred. Khalil, himself a retired army general, planned the preemptive coup in conjunction with leading Umma members and the army's two senior generals, Ibrahim Abboud and Ahmad Abd al Wahab, who became leaders of the military regime. Abboud immediately pledged to resolve all disputes with Egypt, including the long-standing problem of the status of the Nile River. Abboud abandoned the previous government's unrealistic policies regarding the sale of cotton. He also appointed a constitutional commission, headed by the chief justice, to draft a permanent constitution. Abboud maintained, however, that political parties only served as vehicles for personal ambitions and that they would not be reestablished when civilian rule was restored. Despite the Abboud regime's early successes, opposition elements remained powerful. In 1959 dissident military officers made three attempts to displace Abboud with a "popular government." Although the courts sentenced the leaders of these attempted coups to life imprisonment, discontent in the military continued to hamper the government's performance. In particular, the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) gained a reputation as an effective anti-government organization. To compound its problems, the Abboud regime lacked dynamism and the ability to stabilize the country. Its failure to place capable civilian advisers in positions of authority, or to launch a credible economic and social development program, and gain the army's support, created an atmosphere that encouraged political turbulence. A revolution in 1964 returned the nation to civilian rule, but did little to remove the preceding issues that plagued Sudan. This all brings us within the context of the First Sudanese Civil War. This war was a conflict from 1955 to 1972 between the northern part of Sudan and the southern Sudan region that demanded representation and more regional autonomy. The war was divided into four major stages: initial guerrilla warfare, the creation of the Anyanya insurgency, political strife within the government and establishment of the South Sudan Liberation Movement. Around a million people died over the course of the nearly 17-year long war. The war would end with the signing of the Addis Ababa Accord, which created two main things. A South Sudanese Autonomous Region, and relative peace, if only for about a decade. The Second Sudanese Civil War would break out in 1983. Some sources describe the conflict as an ethnoreligious one where the Arab-Muslim central government's pursuits to impose Sharia law on non-Muslim southerners led to violence, and eventually to the civil war. Historian Douglas Johnson has pointed to exploitative governance as the root cause. This war lasted for some 22 years, making it one of the longest civil wars in recorded Human History. Roughly two million people died as a result of war, famine and disease caused by the conflict. Four million people in southern Sudan were displaced at least once, normally repeatedly during the war. The civilian death toll is one of the highest of any war since World War II and was marked by numerous human rights violations, including slavery and mass killings. Perhaps one of the greatest horrors and tragedies of the Second Sudanese Civil War was the use of child soldiers. Armies from all sides enlisted children in their ranks. The 2005 agreement required that child soldiers be demobilized and sent home. The Sudan People's Liberation Army (the SPLA, by the way, was founded in 1983 as a rebel group to reestablish the South as an autonomous region after president Nimeiry declared the South to officially be part of a fully reunited Sudan.) claimed to have let go 16,000 of its child soldiers between 2001 and 2004. However, international observers (UN and Global Report 2004) have found demobilized children have often been re-recruited by the SPLA. As of 2004, there were between 2,500 and 5,000 children serving in the SPLA. There was also a revival of slavery during the Second Civil War, it was largely directed at southern Christians, on the grounds that Islamic law allegedly allowed it, and also at women, many of whom were kept as sex slaves and repeatedly raped. The Second Civil War ended officially in 2002 with the signing of the Naivasha Agreement. This guaranteed autonomy for the South for 6 years after which a referendum would be help to vote for official independence. This war ended with roughly 2 million people, mostly civilians, dead of drought and famine caused in large parts by the fighting. Still, while the Second Civil War ended in 2005, it overlapped with a crisis that my generation is very familiar with and that is still, technically, ongoing to this day. I am speaking, of course, of the Darfur Genocide that began in 2003 and has not ended to this day. The War in Darfur, which is also sometimes called the Land Cruiser War, because there were a LOT of Toyota Land Cruiser pick up trucks on both sides of the war, began in February 2003 when the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) rebel groups began fighting against the government of Sudan, which they accused of oppressing Darfur's non-Arab population. So first let's talk real quick about the SLM and the JEM. When General Omar al-Bashir and the National Islamic Front headed by Dr. Hassan al-Turabi overthrew the Sudanese government led by Ahmed al-Mirghani in 1989. A large section of the population in Darfur, particularly the non-Arab ethnicities in the region, became increasingly marginalized. These feelings were solidified in 2000 by the publication of The Black Book, which detailed the structural inequity in the Sudan that denies non-Arabs equal justice and power sharing. In 2002 Abdul Wahid al-Nur, a lawyer, Ahmad Abdel Shafi Bassey, an education student, and a third man founded the Darfur Liberation Front, which subsequently evolved into the Sudan Liberation Movement and claimed to represent all of the oppressed in the Sudan. The Black Book, also known as The Black Book: Imbalance of Power and Wealth in the Sudan detailed how, despite the Arabic people of North Sudan making up 5.4% of the population they still held 79.5% of the wealth in the nation. So in this context, beyond being a war and genocide based on ethnicity and religion we can see economic reasons for the war. There was a massive disparity between the haves and the have nots, and Karl Marx would tell us that this is the foundation and origin of all of history's great wars. Now, the Justice and Equality Movement trace their origin to the writers of The Black Book: Imbalance of Power and Wealth in the Sudan, a manuscript published in 2000 that details what it views as the structural inequality in the country; the JEM's founder, Khalil Ibrahim, was one of the authors. The JEM claims to number around 35,000 with an ethnically diverse membership. According to critics it is not the "rainbow of tribes" it claims to be, as most JEM members, including its leader, are from the Zaghawa tribe. The JEM is part of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF), an alliance of groups opposed to the Government of Sudan. The Darfur Genocide has it's roots in the same places as all geocides. One group, who feels themselves superior to all others, decided that the best way to deal with these divisive elements in their society is to try and kill them. We saw the same type of conflict in the Armenian genocide of the early 20th century. The Northern Sudanese government saw the non Arabic elements of South Sudan as threats to their power in the region and so decided to kill them. The use of rape as a tool of genocide has been noted as well. This crime has been carried out by Sudanese government forces and the Janjaweed ("evil men on horseback") paramilitary groups. The actions of the Janjaweed have been described as genocidal rape, with not just women, but children as well. There were also reports of infants being bludgeoned to death, and the sexual mutilation of victims being commonplace. One thing I want to make sure we mention is that the President of Sudan during the Darfur genocide has had arrest warrants issued against him by the ICC. He has been charged with five counts of crimes against humanity: murder, extermination, forcible transfer, torture, and rape; two counts of war crimes: intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population as such or against individual civilians not taking part in hostilities, and pillaging; three counts of genocide: by killing, by causing serious bodily or mental harm, and by deliberately inflicting on each target group conditions of life calculated to bring about the group's physical destruction, allegedly committed at least between 2003 and 2008 in Darfur, Sudan. To this day he remains at large and is not in custody. I say remains at large. We, more or less, know where he is. As of 2019 al-Bashir was ousted from his political role by the RSF in a military coup and jailed in Khartoum. Tensions rose between the RSF and the SLM and in 2023 they erupted, once again, into a civil war in Sudan. This brings us, more or less, up to modern day Sudan and the current conflict. To put it as simply as possible, ethnic and religious tensions between the Arabic north and the Christian south have exploded into a full scale war in a period of drought and famine. Roughly 9 million people have been displaced and pretty much everyone who lives in Sudan is without adequate food and water. The United Arab Emirates, among other nations are actively supporting the RSF in their continued subjugation of South Sudan and are actively contributing to the ongoing Darfur genocide. Roughly 80% of Sudanese hospitals no longer exist, and the World Food Programe has indicated that some 95% of Sudanese people are in a state of massive food insecurity. On 3 August 2023, Amnesty International released its report on the conflict. Titled Death Came To Our Home: War Crimes and Civilian Suffering In Sudan, it documented "mass civilian casualties in both deliberate and indiscriminate attacks" by both the SAF and the RSF, particularly in Khartoum and West Darfur. It also detailed sexual violence against women and girls as young as 12, targeted attacks on civilian facilities such as hospitals and churches, and looting. Early March 2024, the UN Panel of Experts on Sudan, mandated by Resolution 2620 (2022) of the UN Security Council, published their latest report. It described the wide-ranging devastation and violence in the country, caused in many cases by the RSF and associated militias. With regard to war crimes in West Darfur, the report estimated the death rate through ethnic cleansing of the Masalit community in El Geneina between 10,000 and 15,000. In her speech before the Security Council Committee, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US Representative to the United Nations, commented: "It is my hope that the sobering report will at long last shake the world from its indifference to the horrors playing out before our eyes." In April 2024, the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights released a report into breaches of the Genocide Convention in Darfur. The independent report found that there is "clear and convincing evidence" that the RSF and its allied militias "have committed and are committing genocide against the Masalit," a non-Arab ethnic group, and that all 153 states that have signed the Genocide Convention are "obligated to end complicity in and employ all means reasonably available to prevent and halt the genocide." It goes on to say that there is "clear and convincing evidence" that Sudan, the United Arab Emirates, Libya, Chad, the Central African Republic (CAR) and Russia via the actions of the Wagner Group are "complicit in the genocide." The ongoing genocide and refugee crisis in Sudan can, absolutely trace its roots to British imperialism, but beyond that it is part of an ongoing religious conflict between Islam and Christianity dating back all the way to the Crusades. The conflict between the SAF and the RSF is ongoing and shows no signs of slowing down or stopping. While these two groups fight for control over Sudan millions of innocent civilians are dying due to lack of access to food and water. Civil war and genocide is ongoing against the Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa ethnic groups and against the general non-Arabic Muslim peoples of Sudan. This conflict has been going on for so long that we have all but forgotten about it. I was in high school and engaging in political activism to end the Darfur genocide. This was nearly 20 years ago. I'm old as hell. There are so many horrible crimes and genocides that exist in the world today. Please don't forget about these suffering people. Genocide relies on existing for long enough that it becomes part of the background. None of this is normal. Never again is right now. That's it for this week folks. As we step into 2023, did you know that currently 1.3 billion Muslims do not have the freedom to choose or change their religion? Apostasy forces people to remain in Islam and blasphemy laws punish those who disagree or dare to critique it. Kamal Fahmi is our guest this episode and he founded 'Set My People Free' in 2007, a network of individuals, churches and organizations working for the freedom of converts from Islam to live and practice their new faith, to experience equality and justice in their home countries without fear of reprisals. It is hard to believe that the punishment for leaving Islam is death in 8 countries, so join us as Kamal gives the story of 'Set My People Free' and of the ongoing fight to legalise apostasy and blasphemy. Kamal Fahmi is the founder of 'Set My People Free', this organisation seeks to give Muslim people the freedom to change their faith, to live out and practice their new belief, and to experience freedom, justice and equality in their homeland as non-Muslims. 'Set My People Free' is a nonviolent movement seeking freedom, justice and equality for converts, reconciliation – not victory, and is committed to the life and teaching of Jesus Christ. Their goal is freedom for Muslim people to be able..... To change their religion or belief To worship and practice their new faith To raise their children in their new faith To marry (for women from a Muslim background to marry non-Muslim men) To have freedom, justice and equality. To abolish the crime of apostasy by removal of... Punishment of death for the act of apostasy Punishment of confiscation of the wealth of the convert Nullifying his or her marriage Punishment of disqualifying him/her of the right of the custody of his/her children Punishment of depriving the apostate from his/her right of their inheritance Punishment of discipline (alta'zir) WEBSITE: https://freedom2worship.org/ Interview recorded 15.12.22 *Special thanks to Bosch Fawstin for recording our intro/outro on this podcast. Thank you so much for tuning in on another interview. And it is an absolute pleasure to have a gentleman I met, I think in Poland, maybe two months ago at the OSCE, and that's Kamal Fahmi. Kamal, thank you so much for your time today. (Kamal Fahmi) Yeah, I'm happy really to join you in this interview. It is a beautiful opportunity. (HoO) Great to have you. And the issues we're going to talk about are not ones that we offer. We discuss Islam in different ways, but to focus on apostasy and blasphemy we haven't done. So I'm looking forward to learning from you. And on the screen people can see the website, freedomtoworship.org , our viewers and listeners will find a lot of information about freedoms, looking at the Muslim world, giving stories, news items, articles. There's a whole wealth of information. I'd encourage our viewers and listeners to make use of that. But Kamal, you're the founder of Set My People Free, which is an international NGO focused on the abolition of apostasy and also blasphemy laws around the world. Maybe you can take a few moments and introduce yourself before we get onto the reason you set up Set My People Free, why it's needed. But first, if I can ask you to introduce yourself to our viewers. (KF) My name is Kamal Fahmi. Originally, I'm from Sudan. And for the last 50 years, I was evolving in missions, mostly in the Middle East. In... I was born in Sudan and then I have lived most of my life in Sudan. Started the ministry mainly to reach out to people and share the gospel with them and then later I worked in the Middle East area all the way from Bahrain to Morocco and around 2008 I was challenged by the problems people who leave Islam face especially converts from Islam to Christianity I met a couple in Yemen and they were three generation Christian but they cannot live as Christian in their own country and of course in Yemen it is death sentence for leaving Islam and so they have to be kind of underground and I was approached by the father and he asked me for help because he wanted to convince his son to to study Islam in school because without that they were getting into trouble and also he will not be able to pass his school. And so he wanted me to talk with him and to see if I can encourage him to do that. And I thought maybe there is no problem, we had people who did that in Sudan. But then when I spoke with him, I saw the Son the next day, I was touched by the Son as he was a teenager, very smart, very handsome. And I thought I would not like my daughter to go through this. To be forced to say the Shahadah, to fast and to pray. And his father is a Christian. He himself is a Christian. And the father has become a Christian when he was 19 and the grandfather was a Christian before the father and they cannot live as Christians in their own country. This kind of hit me, we are living in 2008 and they have left Islam, became Christians but they cannot live and exist as Christians in Yemen and and they should face a death sentence by the law. And also on the side of the mother, the mother herself was a believer. Her grandfather had a problem with his knee. Somebody prayed for him. He was healed. He also became a Christian. So these three generations, they are not able to live as Christians. And somehow I said, how could this be in the 20th century? that people cannot change their belief and face this kind of challenge. And then in my mind. I started to think of different situations. When I went to Sana'a, the capital, I met somebody who was also in prison for about seven months or six months, who was a convert and he was arrested and he was in prison. He was not sentenced to death, but he was under a lot of threats. And then I saw the Mahdi Dibaj in Iran, who was also arrested just after the Islamic Revolution. He was a convert from Islam to Christianity. And he was put in jail for 10 years and he was sentenced to death, but of course they didn't apply the sentence and after a lot of international pressure he was released. And while he was in prison he said 'im not only willing to suffer for Christ, but I am willing to die.' And when he was released after 10 years, the guy who helped him to be released, got killed after two weeks, who was the pastor of the Pentecostal Church. And then later, the people said to Mahdi Dibaj, leave Iran because you will face death. But he said, I want to serve my own people, I want to share with them about my belief. And he was the head of the Bible Society. His only problem was that he was a convert from Islam to Christianity. Six months later, he was kidnapped. And a friend of mine here in Sweden, an Iranian believer said they found him cut to pieces in a plastic bag in a park. And so this started to hit me hard as I saw, as I looked at the situation. I realized there is death sentence in 12 countries, Islamic countries. They have death sentence for people who leave Islam. And then in another 12 countries, you don't have the freedom to really leave Islam. It is a crime if you leave, you face torture, you face imprisonment. And it's not for all these people who converse, but even for atheists, who just leave Islam, they'll consider apostate. So that aged me, I felt the call that these laws should be abolished. Because apostasy is against article 18, who is very clearly say that it's freedom. and belief, which include freedom of religion, freedom to change belief, freedom to practice the belief you have as an individual, as a group, and also to be able to share what you believe with others. And apostasy does not give the right for an ex- Muslim to exist. You cannot really exist in an Islamic state. They face, as I said, in 12 countries, death sentence. Because the religion is written in the identity card, you cannot really change. So your children are automatically Muslims. If you are a woman who has a Muslim background, you are automatically also Muslim. And you cannot marry a non-Muslim, but also you face harassment and legally you cannot exist. You don't have the right to exist even in countries like Jordan, Egypt, Syria and also even in Morocco you face difficulty. So that was a problem. And then of course blasphemy is another bigger issue as if you say for example I don't believe in Muhammad as a prophet of God you are considered a blasphemer and this is ridiculous because if I believe in Muhammad then I am a Muslim but I am not to believe in him as a prophet. I don't believe in him as a prophet. So even just questioning the different laws of Sharia, you are considered blasphemer. And a good example of that is the Governor of Jakarta, who was, his name was Foke, and he was a governor for four years. When he was going to be elected for a second term, the Islamist in Indonesia said he cannot be elected again because a non-Muslim cannot rule over Muslims. There was a Hadith like that. And Hadith is a law in Islam. For example, the prayer, the five prayers, are not actually in the Quran, but it is in the Hadith. And they practice the five prayers. And that Hadith was saying that a non-Muslim cannot rule over a Muslim. and Foke the governor said this is a weak hadith. Saying that it is a weak hadith was considered a blasphemy. And he was sentenced to imprisonment. I don't remember the exact number of years now but I think it was between two and five years. And he wanted to appeal, and people said to him, better not appeal because they want to execute you for this. They want to punish you by death. So he pulled back, he spent the time in prison and he was released. So from this, after he spent the sentence, and you can check this in the internet, I mean. And so from this, from sentencing this guy to prison, because saying the Hadith is weak, we said that a non-Muslim cannot rule over or rule over a Muslim was condemned for that. You know then that Islam is not really believing in democracy because there is discrimination against non-Muslims. They cannot rule over a Muslim. And the second thing is that it is blasphemy and it can be punishable to the extent of death, fortunately, because they are a little bit more moderate. You are sentenced to imprisonment. (HoO) Wow. Tell us more about those laws because people think that maybe in some countries like the Gulf states, you have more freedom. There are lots of those in the West that have gone to Dubai and UAE, obviously the World Cup at the moment is in Qatar, and they've tried to brand themselves as very open for everyone, but yet in Qatar, the death penalty is there for apostasy. Countries are are not free and they are all based on Sharia law, Islamic law. Tell us about, because most people in the West find it difficult to even understand countries that are based simply on religious texts and don't bring any other aspect in. So can you explain that, the way Islamic law is overall everything? (KF) Right. It is the Islamic law is over the Constitution actually. They have this Kyro Declaration and it speaks about freedom. They try to put all the articles which is the Universal Declaration of Human Right, but then at the end they say everything has to agree with Sharia. So it actually modifies what he said about freedom and so on but yeah this is a big problem, I have a map, you can actually look at the map in in our website where we put the countries it is in our first homepage and there is a they were about 13 countries which had descended we are thankful that Sudan had to repeal the death sentence two years ago but the problem now with the coup which happened last year there is a possibility that again as the Islamists took over again they go back to the same thing but the constitution was changed and then it was repealed. And that was a great work of our Minister of Justice at that time, who is not anymore, Nasreldin Abdelbari But the rest, there is still a number of countries which have death sentence, in their constitution. I mean, we have for example Mauritania, they have this sentence. And there is a fellow who was accused of apostasy and blasphemy, mainly because he was against slavery in Mauritania. And he wrote a short article which condemned slavery and said that Sharia condones slavery. So he was accused of apostasy for that article. He was in prison for five years in solitary confinement. He was not allowed to take showers because they said he's a kaffir, he's an infidel and they wanted to sentence him to death he said close to 1 million he said this is a quite a large number of people came out. asking his for his death this guy was released after a lot of pressure he is now living in France and his name is Cheikh Ould Mkhaitir. So this is serious. Maybe they don't kill everyone right away. But the person, the convert is under threat the whole time. And the problem is not only the 12 countries we have in red in the map, people face danger, but actually where the law does not exist, the community does take on and apply the laws. So you have these, we call it honour crimes. They are not in any way honour. And people get killed living in the white areas, which we say that the laws give freedom for people to change. I mean, you can go and see a list of number of cases or victims who didn't survive. They were killed like the in 2017 there was a Afghani woman killed in Germany because she left Islam and the guy who killed her they said he's crazy but it is applying the apostasy law even in the white areas but then you continue to see the red it is as you said Qatar as Satan for leaving Islam. I mean, you are free if you are a non-Muslim to become a Muslim, but for a Muslim to leave, then it is a crime. It is in Yemen, it is in Somalia, it is in Iran, and it is in Pakistan for blasphemy, and it is also in Maldive Islands, it is in Brunei. But then you have other countries, It used to be United Arab Emirates, but we have discovered just at the beginning of this year they have abolished it but we are trying to find out if it is just real or it is just said that it has been done but we have checked with some people as they say they did that just this year the death sentence but we need more confirmation and to see that freedom for people to really exist because many times they don't want them to come out of of the closet. They want them to be quiet and many times they will prefer if they leave the country. But these are the countries which we still have it, the ones I mentioned now. Even Kuwait has it. This I missed it when I said the other countries and of course as I said North Sudan officially has abolished it two years ago but of course still the community puts a lot of pressure. At this point there was one convert was in jail not so long ago, the last few months, mainly because we have now a coup of Islamists who are ruling the country. But the laws have been changed already two years ago and so I hope they will not go back again to death sentence. Then you have orange countries in the map and and these are places like Egypt, I missed one country which is actually applying the death sentence now is actually Libya because there's a guy by the name of Bia has been in prison now over one month they want him to repent to release him, this is country number 10 here but he he's still in jail. And they want to execute him, he's holding to his faith, he's a convert to Christianity And it is very sad. It is not in international media. If one lady was stopped from wearing a hijab somewhere, the media are so loud and turning the world upside down, and here somebody is sentenced to death. He's still in jail, mainly because he converted from Islam to Christianity. But nobody is talking about it. It is not out in the news. It is not news at all. (HoO) Well that's why with the World Cup happening in Qatar and I thought it would be the last place I would want to go to watch any sporting event. But there were discussions on, oh there's no alcohol and complaints about that. There were discussions on LGBT rights and freedoms there, but zero conversation on that the law says you can die if you want to leave Islam. And I was frustrated watching some of the media who should know better and should have used the opportunity to talk about that injustice. But as you said, there is silence on it. (KF) Complete silence. They don't bring it up. And it is very sad. And I mean, it is quite serious. I was sitting in with a group the other day and I said there should be sanction against these countries which apply death sentence for leaving Islam. There should be freedom to believe or not to believe but they said we should not use the hammer. But I mean this is a lot of lives of people are at stake. There is lack of freedom completely. Freedom of thought and consciousness is trampled on. And the problem it is moving even towards the West, where the basis of democracy is freedom of expression. And blasphemy, law quench freedom of expression. So you cannot say I don't believe in Muhammad, it is it is considered an insult. Or if you I don't believe in the Sharia which cuts hands off people. So this is ridiculous and I mean people are free. I mean God created us free. He gave us the choice and I mean even Jesus himself said if you want to go to hell, go to hell. The road is wide and many people are going but if you want life there is another way. So it is freedom I feel is very crucial and especially freedom of expression. We need to protect it because it is the basis for democracy and without freedom of expression there is no accountability. So analytical thinking, critical thinking is very important and crucial to talk about things, discuss things and have your opinion. The problem is we are going to a time when there is only one narrative. And this is not really the West we were thinking about or we admire where there is freedom of thought, conscious and belief and then freedom of expression and opinion. Today you cannot have your own opinion, everyone has an opinion and so that is a problem. Blasphemy law actually strips the individual from the freedom of expression. There is a very good book actually called Silence, written by Paul Marshall and Nina Shay. And they said how apostasy and blasphemy courts are silencing or taking away freedom of expression. And they have any documented cases all over the world, which is happening because of these two laws. And so if we continue, of course it is in Saudi Arabia and you have examples of people who are in prison, journalists like Raif Badawi and Yemen people are being imprisoned and killed. There was a guy who was at the age of 16 and they chopped his head, they shot him mainly because they accused him of of being an apostate and the young fellow he wrote in his fair book he said to them you accused me of apostasy you see God in the graveyard, I see God in the roses and you can look for this. His name is Omar (Mohammad Bataweel). I cannot remember his second name, but his Facebook is still there and he was at the age of 16 and he was killed in Aden. And you will find him in our booklet, victims of apostasy and blasphemy law. We have a small booklet and we have the link for it in our website. You can go there and see some of the victims. And it is sad to see the number of the victims. There was a small kid, also the age of 14, he was selling coffee in Syria during the ISIS attacks and so on. The jihadists came to him, he was selling coffee to help his family, they came to him, they said, give us coffee free. He refused to give them coffee free. And he said, if even the prophet come down, I will not give you coffee free. And this is a saying, which they normally say in Syria. When the jihadists took him and shot him, accusing him of blasphemy. So look at our booklet, victims of apostasy and blasphemy laws, you will see how this law is impacting lives of many individuals. Some lost their lives, some survived, but they went through trauma for this. We need to really stand together to see these laws abolished. (HoO) I want to bring up the website again, and that's what people will find. That's the book Kamal was talking about, Victims of Apostasy and Blasphemy, Laws and Islam, and then further down that's the map we were looking at. So everything is on the front page of freedomtoworship.org. So please do go and make use of it. Kamau, can I ask you about you taking this message out, I obviously met you at the OSCE conference, an intergovernmental conference, looking at human rights, looking at the political angle. You've been there a number of times. Do you want to let us know what you raise and the response you get every time you've been there? (KF) I think we are in a kind of a battle for heart and minds. I think most of the people have, they didn't notice, and it was an eye-opener to many. And I think there is more people today are aware of the problem. The only thing is, and of course there have been moves to try to stop it. I mean, they agree, most of the people I speak with agree this is a problem. The only thing, we are not doing anything about it. It is not out in the mainstream media. It is not an issue which is people are trying to see change. They are trying to use a carrot instead of putting pressure to see this issue change. I'm thankful that they are putting some, at this point, there is a bigger change towards protecting the freedom of expression. People realize more and more the problem. But I think they have to take a strong step to see this stopped. I feel we are in a better situation than when we started, but I still think we have a long way. When there was a problem of apartheid in South Africa, the whole world stood against that and worked for equality. Now here we have even a worse situation where you are not allowed to even exist as a former Muslim. You are not allowed to exist. And you have in front of you 12 countries where you have death sentence. We need to take bold steps to put pressure so Article 18 and 19 in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights be applied. Because without taking away these laws, you will still have problem with the issue of jihadists, with the issue of terrorists, because here they want to enforce the application of these laws. But we need to stand and say enough is enough with this. This has to stop. We have the right to ask for the application of Article 18 and 19. So there has not been strong steps to see this stop. You see it with what happened with Charlie Hebdo and other journalists. I'm very thankful that the fresh government showed what the caricatures and so on. But I think we need more steps to put pressure and say what is right is right, what is wrong is wrong. And really stand behind the freedom of thought and conscious and belief and freedom to live, freedom not to believe, freedom of expression and opinion. And I think we need to take more strong steps saying this is wrong. Lately there were 25 countries which have signed a letter condemning apostasy and blasphemy law. And that was through the ministerial for religious freedom and this was done like three years ago. Of Trump when Brownback was the ambassador for the religious freedom. And lately Australia and are heading, spearheading with Holland, a campaign to end killing for religion. And which is mainly working to abolish apostasy and blasphemy law. So there is steps like this, but I think we need to take more steps to sanction the countries which apply it. Because without sanctioning it and condemning it openly, this will continue. And this impact lives of many people. I mean, you see what happened to Salman Rushdie now in New York. And this is again application of blasphemy law. And you cannot kill somebody for the way he thinks or for not believing. And many ex-Muslims are facing these threats worldwide. They are under protected by the police. Even here in Sweden, they are protected because of fear of people killing them. And so, but we have to stand together and say enough, enough with this and this has to be stopped. I mean there is no serious steps which has been taken to condemn this issue, condemn the issue of apostasy and blasphemy law, but I think people are more aware of it. Trying to do some steps, but as I said before, they want to use more, this using a carrot instead of saying this is wrong and this has to be changed and there must be some pressure applied, for the sake of people who suffer under this. (HoO) But I, I also think it's, you look at the laws and you're talking about the legislation in Muslim countries, but also you refer to the freedoms in the West and we think people are free to choose and change their religion. But I've talked to a number of converts from Islam to Christianity and they have to be extremely careful. They have been attacked verbally, they've been attacked physically. And I think, well, this is happening in England, which supposedly has freedom, but you realize that same understanding, that same belief system that restricts freedoms in Islamic Countries still is within Islamic communities here in the UK and it seems to be often the law of Islam is the one that reigns and not always the law of the land in those communities. (KF) This is very true because we have a friend here who is a convert. that person had to be lucky because that person could not have passed, dot their degree in their studies for Islam inside Europe, if they knew their standards, that they are converts. They had to do it really very, very low key. That is in Sweden. And many actually under protection. And so you are right. You are right. They face it even here. But I think we need to condemn it more openly and say enough with it. And that really to work hard to punish any perpetrators or some people who does it. I mean, even like Nigeria, they have death sentence in the North. And now there has been a lot of attack against non-Muslims within Nigeria. And nobody is speaking against what is happening there. It is the main cause of it is again apostasy and blasphemy law and they are putting pressure on non-muslims to Christians especially. I mean blowing churches, attacking taking their land and all these are initiated by these laws and again there is no international condemnation of this. They use other reasons to say this is happening. And I mean, it is a problem. And even just now, this time, even in Sudan, there is a man who has been a convert to Christianity, who is a pastor in the church and God has been using him to heal people. He healed some of his family, so other other Muslim flocked to the church to get healing, and God has been healing them. And then this guy was arrested and they accused him of being a witch. And mainly because they said he's a Christian witch, and he was imprisoned. Unfortunately, the laws because now are more free. There was a court case, he was released, but again he's under threats now by some of the Islamist community for what he is doing and I mean he has not done anything bad and mainly because he is a convert and because somehow lives of people have been changed, people have been flocking there because they saw God doing something and that has made these people more open towards Christianity which made the community upset. And so even as you said before when... so we need we need to put pressure, these laws to be applied and that to stand together to express the importance of freedom of expression and the right to say I don't believe in Muhammad as a prophet of God. Because I mean there is no force. You should have the freedom to believe or not to believe and which is the Creator has given this us this freedom and we have to have it and I think the freedom of choice is very key in democracy if you don't have the freedom of choice then forget it and if you die because you choose something different That is really awful. So I think we need to see more people work for this. (HoO) I just want to ask you about where, this will go just before Christmas. We are here, you said you're in Sweden, I'm in the UK, and we have freedoms here and we've talked a lot about freedoms and freedoms that are not afforded to those who live in the Muslim world. Tell us what that means for someone who is a Christian living in many of those countries. We have the joy of being able to meet with other people, other Christians, many people who are not Christians still celebrate the joyous time of Christmas. And I guess in many Middle Eastern countries, in many Islamic countries, it's very different and you cannot celebrate this time as you would here in the West. (KF) Yeah, I mean like Brunei for example, some years, two or three years ago, they just forbid celebrating Christmas in Brunei, completely, for everybody. And of course there is minority of Christians who come who are living there and working there. I mean in Sudan before the fall of this Islamic government, they... people were going around on the streets, we went one Christmas in 2017, I remember, no not 2017, about 2000, maybe I think 2007, and they didn't want people to say Merry Christmas to the Christians, they don't want people to celebrate it. But, I see in many countries for the convert, they cannot openly celebrate. Converts who have come to know Christ, yeah, they cannot openly celebrate Christmas. In these red countries and also in the countries where it is illegal. There was a Muslim guy who converted to Christianity. Wanted to go into a church in Egypt. He was arrested by the police because they discovered he's a Muslim going to a church. He was Sudanese. They put him in jail. They sent him back to Sudan. And that was like around, it was like 80 years ago. And so they don't have the freedom to celebrate as converts. They have problem to go to churches. But I think in a way, some of these countries, the orange, the red, foreigners are celebrating. But local people who are converts, they cannot really openly celebrate Christmas and go to church or meet together and worship openly. They mostly meet in secret. But I mean at least some of course they have decorations, Christians are celebrating where traditionally there were Christians. I mean the Christians from Christian background in Egypt or in Jordan or in Syria, they celebrate Christmas in Iraq. But if they are a convert they have difficulty to do that. But some countries have made it even difficult for even the minorities or the Christians from other countries who are living in their country to celebrate. But converts, they don't have the chance at all to do that. And so it had been going in a way from one country to the other. I mean, I passed through Qatar once, flying back during Christmas. They had no decoration for Christmas in the airport, not anywhere. I don't know how it is with the foreign churches. If they had, they can celebrate in the church, maybe in their own meeting or within the church compound, maybe in their homes, it should be possible. But there were no signs of celebrations. other airports in Dubai and so on you find a lot of decorations and Christmas things I think and the local, the minorities who are from other countries also they celebrate but I think converts always will have problems, I know Brunei for sure doesn't allow Christmas celebration because it came out strongly, I think Somalia will be another place which will be very difficult to celebrate Christmas. The same is with Mauritania and of course even in Nigeria they face problems because the churches are attacked many times they are doing this and so it is hard to say Tunisia maybe is more open, we don't have it here with any of the colours, but still I think they face pressure from the community, but according to the law, now the church has been accepted in Tunisia. But as I think generally, where there is traditional Christians from the beginning, because actually Christianity started in this area and it has died in many of these countries, but where it still exists, they celebrate. But for comfort, it is very difficult. Most of them, they have to be underground in the orange and the red countries in the map. They cannot really have the freedom to openly express their faith in Christ. It is also similar sometimes, of course, even in the West, you find a convert from Christianity or from atheist to Islam, they always have their faces out that they speak. But if you have a convert from Islam to Christianity, they don't appear. Because then their life is in danger. And of course, you had the story of the guy who had Merry Christmas in his shop who was killed even in London once. So it is harder for the converts or for the more tolerant people within, but I think in a number of these countries where they were traditionally Christians sometimes of course because we have to separate between somebody, I mean it is like Somebody saying all the West are Christians of course some aren't, the same are some of the Muslims are not practicing Muslims, they're more terrorists, but if they are serious is their faith they can be dangerous. So it is not... so you can be nominate and some of these maybe are more open and tolerant with others and open to have relationship and I mean through my life of course I had a lot of friends who are from a Muslim background but the thing is the ideology we have to think about and the more you are practicing the ideology then you are in more trouble and difficulty, I mean you cause more problems. So we have always to think of that. So apostasy and blasphemy law are part of the Sharia and when they are applied then of course it is a big problem and it is actually applied as we saw here in these 12 countries where you have death sentence for leaving Islam. And other countries where it is a crime to do that. But I think where there is traditional Christians, there is more freedom because the church existed there for a long time. (HoO) Kamal, thank you so much for your time. It's a subject that does not get a lot of attention, and that's why I was very keen to have you on. To the viewers and to the listeners, please go and make use of the website, freedomdoworship.org. You can sign up to the newsletter, you can donate, you can support the work there, and all the news items information is there. So it is a great resource to help educate those of us who live in countries that are free and realize that the world isn't all like that. So Kamal, thank you so much for your time today. It's been wonderful to have you on. (KF) I would like just to end with one sentence. What Martin Luther King had said once, he said, "at the end, I will not remember the words of my enemies, but the silence of my friend." And my plea for whoever watched this program, to speak up for justice, for these people who are facing death threat through their life, just because they refuse to believe. Or because they wanted to change, they wanted to become Athiests, they wanted to become Christians, they wanted to leave Islam. And so, please speak out, because injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. And we need to stand for justice, for freedom, and please stand for the application of article, universal declaration of human rights article 18 and 19. (HoO) That's a perfect way to end, to call for people to get involved and to speak up. Thank you so much.

In this episode, we travel to North Sudan & South Sudan and to a centre for abandoned children... My work here with staff delved into long-held, unexplored beliefs that were impacting their work until such time as we created safe space to explore them. While it's possible to live incongruently, in the space between our beliefs, values and actions, it does have impacts. In this narrative, I share how we can unpack the assumptions that lead to incongruence, and the collective catharsis that can emerge from working through tension & discomfort. Also in this episode, I announce that I am evolving, and as such, Ethos of Aid is evolving as well. A three-week hiatus will follow this episode. Watch for news of our impending return! If you're enjoying, have a question or comment or you'd like to know more about my coaching program, send me a message at www.kimbervradenburg.com or on the Ethos of Aid FB Page or @kimbervradenburg on Instagram. Thanks so much for listening! Kimber
A version of this essay was published by swarajyamag.com at https://swarajyamag.com/world/lessons-for-india-from-south-africa-beware-of-those-bearing-gifts. Please listen to the podcast (click the ‘play’ button above), and give me feedback. It takes a lot of work to put the podcast together, and I would like to hear what you guys think of it, and your suggestions on how it can be improved. As I write this, there are riots in South Africa over a court order to jail former President Jacob Zuma on corruption charges. It may escalate to a quasi-civil war. It was startling to hear that model-minority Indian-origin South Africans are facing threats to their lives and livelihoods, and that some of them are defending themselves with firearms. As a teenager I read several novels by the Afrikaner author Laurens van der Post about the days of apartheid, and I was struck by the trisanku nature of the Indians there: disrespected by both blacks and whites, living a tenuous and uncertain existence. We saw what happened to Indians in Idi Amin’s Uganda, and we saw how the Chettiars were ejected from Burma. A big reason for the assaults is the certainty that Indians are soft targets: that they do not fight back and they often have assets because they are diligent and save whatever they can. Indian businesses are being torched, and their very lives are in jeopardy. It is important to pay attention to this because India’s future is entwined with the Indian Ocean Rim, and with the fast-growing (at least till the pandemic struck) economies of that huge and relatively empty continent. The Chinese have made massive inroads there, but there is also a backlash. India needs to have an Africa strategy. India, meanwhile, merely gets second-hand information about Africa from the Anglosphere. This has to change. There are serious commercial opportunities. For example, Indian digitization and payment options may be attractive to African nations: UPI, RuPay, Aadhar, Cowin, India Stack etc., along with a bridge between UPI and Kenya’s mPESA. More to the point, there are lessons for us from the African encounter with the West. The net result has been the impoverishment and suffering of the African, including arbitrary lines drawn across the continent tearing apart traditional ethnic identities, leading to endless wars and displacement and ethnic cleansing. That must sound familiar to subcontinentals: the legacy of European empire.I shall confine myself to three examples: Rwanda, Ethiopia and South Sudan. RwandaThere are two ethnic groups in Rwanda, the ‘tall, fair’ Tutsis and the ‘short, dark’ Hutus. Well, that’s the theory, but to the impartial observer, they seem identical: they are very close genetically, and they had generally lived peacefully with each other for centuries. Christian missionaries arriving in Rwanda ‘discovered’ that the minority Tutsi were lording it over the Hutu. I don’t remember if they ‘discovered’ that the Tutsi were also migrants who had defeated and now oppressed the Hutus. In any case, under the missionaries, cleavages in society were manufactured or at least dramatically magnified. In the end, there was a horrific genocide. The Hutus attempted to wipe out the Tutsis, with the collusion of the church. If you get away from the gruesome killings, this might sound vaguely familiar to Indians: yes, it is the ‘Aryan’ Invasion Fairytale in a slightly different form. But the intent was the same: divide et impera. The goal was to maintain white control by fomenting fratricide and civil war.It was the late N S Rajaram who had the insight that what happened in Rwanda was the template for the ‘Aryan’-‘Dravidian’ divide that missionaries created in India. One Bishop Caldwell, and later, his ideological descendants such as EV Ramaswamy Naicker, created exactly the same kind of unscientific and unsubstantiated division between the allegedly ‘Aryan’ Tamil Brahmins and the allegedly ‘Dravidian’ middle castes. We have to assume that the intent in India was also (in addition to divide and rule) continuous fratricidal warfare, bhedam, and thus easy pickings for the imperialists. The funny thing is that Tamil Brahmins are genetically identical to the allegedly ‘Dravidian’ middle castes, but then, there is no reason to let science stand in the way of a good narrative. The fact that this whole thing didn’t lead to genocide in India, a la Rwanda, is miraculous, because it could easily have done so. Perhaps some vestige of civilizational tolerance meant only exile, not physical liquidation. In Rwanda, after the horrific genocide, Tutsis led by Robert Kagame, who had honed fighting skills in neighboring countries, came to power. They have maintained the peace, and led to some level of development, although there are murmurs about autocracy. Interestingly enough, a deep dive into Kagame’s Rwanda brings up a lot of not-so-flattering comparisons to everybody’s poster-child du jour, Bangladesh, but that’s a story for another time. EthiopiaThis is an ancient Christian country with roots going back to the days around the Council of Nicae, 325 CE, that codified Christian dogma. Some seafaring European adventurers who ended up in India were looking for the fabled lost kingdom of ‘Prester John’, supposedly the king of Ethiopia. That didn’t save the country from going through a brutal civil war in the 20th century. The province of Eritrea rebelled, and after a 20-year-long war, which took the lives of an estimated 100,000 people on both sides put together, Eritrea formally became a new nation. In the past year, another rebellion in the province of Tigray has become a serious military problem. It appears as though the Tigrayans, whose fighters had earlier allied with different factions in the Ethiopia-Eritrea war, are now on the verge of defeating combined Ethiopian and Eritrean forces, and are now threatening to take the war into neighboring states. Just like Yugoslavia a while ago, Ethiopia has fallen apart. Why is this relevant to India? Because the West is pushing for the balkanization of India, under the new and sexy name of “sub-national diplomacy”. Thanks to Abhinav Agarwal for pointing out the following article and a pithy quote from it: “Subnational diplomacy should be a crucial tool of Biden’s India strategy... "And, putting their money where their mouth is, Americans are following up by ‘canceling’ the word ‘India’. It is either ‘South Asia’ (which, to quote that war-criminal Churchill, is “about as tangible as the equator”), or it is sub-national. It appears the West is reaching out to West Bengal and also to Tamil Nadu (see the ecstasy with which they received the appointment of Esther Duflo and Jean Dreze to an economic affairs panel there). So it’s never “Indian-American”, but “Bengali-American”, or “South Asian American”, as far as US communiques are concerned. It took them 48 hours, and a lot of noise on social media, to issue a half-hearted retraction to the following. The funny thing is that Samir Banerjee’s father is not even Bengali, he’s Assamese! But hey, anything in the cause of bhedam. Chanakya, I am sure, would approve. Creating divisions where they don’t exist: now where have we seen this before?South SudanThis country was created exactly ten years ago, as a refuge for Christians who, it seems, were being oppressed by North Sudan’s Muslim majority. That is also a story we have heard elsewhere: partition on ideological or especially on religious grounds, courtesy the West. East Timor, for instance. Intriguingly, though, when a European country was divided (Germany) it was quickly reunited. I doubt the same will be true for other countries divided by the West. In 2011, there were hopeful predictions about an egalitarian and prosperous South Sudan, especially because it has oil. But the reality is far from it: the country is desperately poor, and there are accusations of gross human rights violations and oppression based on ethnicity. Child marriage is rife, child soldiers are common, and rape is used widely as a war tactic. The creation of South Sudan has not led to any great improvement in the lives of the people.Of the various ‘splittist’ (to use Chinese vocabulary for a minute) groups in India, the most virulent are the ‘Dravidian’ parties of Tamil Nadu, which nurse fond hopes for something they call ‘United States of South India’. India has also seen that widespread Christian conversion leads to secession and demands for separate homelands: as in much of the Northeast. As conversion increases in Andhra, Telangana and Tamil Nadu (there are already substantial numbers in Kerala), the urge to secede will likely increase. South Sudan’s case is salutary: creating a new nation based on religion is not exactly the most sensible course of action. Fortunately, in India’s case, apart from a few hard-core Tamils, most people in South India have no particular interest in anything ‘Dravidian’. But the ‘subnational diplomacy’ specialists from the Biden administration will likely create trouble. As an example, the closure of the Sterlite copper plant -- precisely when copper prices and demand are set to go through the roof -- must rank as one of the most brain-dead, malicious acts of recent times. It is quite likely that the famed sub-national diplomacy spoken of by CSIS is being applied to the cause of ‘Dravida Nadu’. In this, there will be other eager partners: Pakistan, China and various busybodies such as the Scandinavians who like to fish in troubled waters.African LessonsInterestingly, I have been seeing at least on social media that ordinary Africans are far more cognizant of the malfeasance of ex-colonials than Indians are. Their leaders are aware, too. Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, who died recently, was one. So was whoever it is who said, pithily, “When the missionaries came, they had the book and we had the land. They taught us to pray with our eyes closed. When we opened our eyes, they had the land, and we had the book”. Indians, and our leaders, are still bedazzled, and mouth platitudes such as vasudhaiva kutumbakam and athithi devo bhava out of context. It is time we learned something from the Africans. 1600 words, 14 Jul 2021 This is a public episode. As South Sudan celebrates its 9th independence day, the world's newest country to exist is still facing many challenges, conflicts with North Sudan and yet to rise as a strong African nation in a very crucial part of the continent. - What has changed for South Sudanese after the independence in 2011? - Did the conflict between the two lands, lead to an Identity crisis? - Was keeping Sudan as one country a "Mission Impossible" ? All these questions and more are answered by Dau Doldol who is a South Sudanese who had to leave his homeland during the war, ending up to be an activist, helping the African community in the US through many organizations. Sudanese authorities are flying flags Half-mast in both South and North Sudan in honour of Dr Mansour Khalid. South Sudanese President Kiir ordered the three days of mourning in honour of the late veteran Politician Dr Monsour Khalid.
Boy howdy, This episode is packed with loads of fun stuff. We have stories of monkeys escaping zoos, John sees a boob, and we talk about current political climates in North Sudan... Nah, just kidding everyone. but we did call a medical professional while they are at work...oh an even football! Be sure to follow us on Instagam and Facebook... I am one of the “Lost Boys of Sudan," a name given to over 20,000 boys of the Nuer and Dinka ethnic groups who were displaced and/or orphaned during the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983–2005), a war in which 2.5 million people were killed or displaced. I am originally from Bor, in a small village in South Sudan. In 1987 when I was six years old, my village was attacked by an insurgent group from North Sudan, led by Omar al-Bashir. The attack left the majority of people dead and many were dispersed. Huts and livestock were burned. I still recall the sound of the gunshots and the screams of the people begging for help. This was the first time in my life that I experienced and understood the meaning of fear. I was young, confused and scared. This was also the moment that separated me from my family for a few hours, which has turned into two decades. I remember thinking that I would return home once the attackers left. Unfortunately home is still a far off place. I fled my village and thus began my journey as a refugee. Through all these painful moments in life, I knew that someday I would find happiness. Indeed, my past is what has kept me going in life. It is when I look at what I have overcome to get here that I most clearly see my future. I have been fortunate to realize some of my dreams. When I came to the United States in 2000, I attended North Penn High School in Lansdale, PA, where I graduated. I then got accepted to Temple University and graduated in 2008. In May 2011, I graduated with my master's in International Peace and Conflict Resolution from Arcadia University. Currently, I recently graduated with my second master degree at Cornell University in MPA in Economics and Financial policy. I have truly been motivated by the challenges and hardships I endured when I fled Sudan because of civil war. https://www.facebook.com/aajok?pnref=story

Muslim terrorism is now global. You will begin to see the loss of your right to privacy. Israel and the USA will be the key targets of this attack. Islamic terrorism will be the active agent to frighten people into wanting a one world governing body. The Koran instructs Muslims to kill non-Muslims (Jews and Christians). In exchange for being allowed to build her Temple, Israel will sign a peace treaty with the coming world leader: the false-messiah (the beast). A review of the historic world powers and their treatment of Israel ... and how New Babylon will arise from the new Islamic 10 nation confederacy. PREFACE While conducting teaching seminars, and through feedback from the seminars through the years, I have discovered that real growth of individuals who trust in G-d is directly related to teaching concerning end time prophecy . . . particularly as it relates to the time in which we live: the last days. I have seen young men and women grow into seasoned leaders for the Lord in the last 40 years as they learned about the plan of G-d for Israel and for the last days. Because of this I have been instructed by the Spirit to give a brief overview in the next two podcasts. There will be material in these podcasts ... and in the show notes ... that you will probably NOT find in seminary libraries or in Jewish or Christian bookstores, particularly where it relates to Islam. Because of the urgency of the need for this instruction in the Body of Messiah, I will be releasing these podcasts with show notes in a format which you can use for training others in your synagogues, churches or fellowships. The title of this podcast, Babylon, The Harlot, Exposed - Part 1, is just that: I am going to show you certain details of the harlot Babylon that are NOT covered by usual dispensational or theological exegesis. Babylon, as in the past so in the future, is the enemy of Israel ... and is about to appear on the scene. - Prince Handley BABYLON, THE HARLOT: HER ORIGIN A summary of the the historic temporal or civil powers of the world is as follows: I. The first Babylonian Empire was founded by Nimrod. From the people of this empire, come ALL the empires of the world. G-d confounded the language of the people and scattered them abroad to his predetermined boundaries of ethnicity (the nations). (Torah - Genesis 11) II. The people of Israel were set apart by G-d. Bible prophecy deals with the nations as they affect the Israelites (or the nation of Israel) in one way or another. III. The first major empire to persecute Israel was of course Egypt. This empire was NOT included in Daniel’s prophecy. (Daniel Chapter 2) IV. The second major empire to persecute Israel was Assyria. It was by Assyria that the Israelites of the northern Kingdom of Israel were taken into captivity. This empire was NOT included in Daniel’s prophecy. V. The third major empire which persecuted the Israelites was the second Babylonian Empire. It was under this empire that the Israelites in the southern Kingdom of Judah were taken into captivity. This empire was the FIRST in Daniel’s series of four kingdoms. You can read this in the Tanakh, in the Book of Daniel, the Prophet, Chapter Two. It was represented by the head of gold. Note: The reason Daniel started with the second Babylonian Empire was that this was during his lifetime and pertained to the interpretation of dreams and dream-visions that dealt with this empire and subsequent empires up to the end times. VI. The fourth major empire and the SECOND in Daniel’s series of four kingdoms was Medo-Persia. It was represented by the breast and arms of silver. VII. The fifth major empire and the THIRD in Daniel’s series of four kingdoms was Greece. It was represented by the belly and thighs of brass. VIII. The sixth major empire and the FOURTH in Daniel’s series of four kingdoms was the Roman Empire. It was represented by the legs of iron and ... NEXT ... IX. The feet part of iron and clay in Daniel's vision represent a revived Islamic Caliphate in the latter days ... (of which we have entered). It's interesting to note that the etymological use of "arab" refers to the "mixed people to the East of Israel." Iron and clay do NOT mix. REMEMBER THE ABOVE SUMMARY OF HISTORIC POWERS AS IT IS A KEY TO UNDERSTANDING THE SEVEN (7) HEADS OF THE BEAST UPON WHICH THE HARLOT, BABYLON, RIDES. Let us compare Daniel's vision in Chapter 7 (and his interpretation Of Nebuchadnezzar's dream in Daniel Chapter 2) with the seven (7) heads upon which the woman - Babylon - sits in Revelation 17: The seven (7) heads are: 1. Egypt 2. Assyria 3. Babylon (the second Babylonian Empire) - 1st Empire Head 4. Medo-Persia - 2nd Empire Head 5. Greece - 3rd Empire Head 6. Rome - 4th Empire Head 7. Islam divided: Sunni, Shia, ISIS - "Mixed iron and clay" in Daniel 2; "Ten horns of Daniel 7); the Ten Regional Islamic Confederacy. Most students of Bible prophecy agree now that in the last days there will be a reconstituted, or revised, Islamic Caliphate. This is mostly because of the dream-visions and interpretations in Daniel Chapters Two and Seven. Many liberal and neo-orthodox theologians attempt to discount the validity of Daniel as a prophet; however, Yeshua gave validation to Daniel’s prophetic office when He, as Israel’s Messiah, taught concerning the last days [Matthew 24:15 and Mark 13:14]. Mashiach Yeshua (Messiah Jesus also referred to the Prophet Daniel in His teaching, thereby giving validity to Daniel as a prophet.) Many conservative or evangelical scholars surmised in the past that the geo-political area encompassed previously by the Roman Empire rule would be revived and be the arena from which the anti-Christ, or false Messiah, would arise. However, certain situations that are being played out today forge an entirely different set of circumstances while still emanating from the geographic confines of Eastern Europe (Turkey), the Middle East and North Africa. May I suggest to you that the predominant force arising from the area of the eastern extension of the old Roman Empire and the Middle East is none other than Islam, a religion spawned in Hell by Satan: a religion based upon the teachings of a false prophet, Muhammad, and the false god, Allah. NOTE: The majority of soldiers in the Roman Army who destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 AD / CE were from Syria, Egypt and Arabia. They were transcripts. These were "the people of the prince who shall come" described in Daniel 9:26. Therefore, the "prince who shall come" -- the anti-christ -- will be from the Middle East. Right now in Europe there are hundreds of Islamic schools. The geographic confines described composed of parts of Eastern Europe, the Middle East and part of North Africa (Libya and North Sudan) will be the sling from which the false-messiah ... or, the anti-christ ... will be thrust. He could likely be of Syrian Greek background. The main point to realize, however, is that Islam will likely be the catalyst which will bring about the one world government. Let me explain: 1. Muslim terrorism is now global. 2. Pertaining to people in the USA, you are already beginning to see the loss of your right to privacy. The Department of Homeland Security and The Patriot Act - even though established out of NEED and for the GOOD of the populace - are still instruments that can and may one day be used for invasion of privacy of Christians. 3. Islam is the #1 force in the drive to one world government. Islamic terrorism will be the active agent to frighten people into wanting a one world governing body for protection. People around the world will want peace and safety and will be willing to give up their constitutional rights for it. This will be the caveat for the Jews and Israel when the coming world leader (chosen by the New World Governance) tricks Israel into signing a seven (7) year treaty with the conciliation that Israel can build the Temple. However, it will be with a great price. “For when they shall say, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction will come upon them, as travail upon a woman with child." (1 Thessalonians 5:3) Daniel 9:27 and Jeremiah also spoke about this. People will say, “Give me peace . . . leave me and my money alone . . . and let me retire in style." 4. Muslim terrorism is being used in the media to EQUATE to fundamentalism. Just the other day I heard a news commentator say that there are fundamentalists in all religions . . . and used the example of “Christian fundamentalists." The Koran instructs Muslims to kill non-Muslims, and this especially promotes an anti-Jewish, anti-Christian concept! Christian fundamentalism AND Jewish fundamentalism, especially Hasidic and Orthodox Jews, will not only be the targets of Islam, but of an ever increasing cross section of global society. Born-again (real) Christians will not be persecuted because they are Christians, but because they are considered fundamentalists ... terrorists by society at large; likewise Hasidic and Orthodox Jews. Yeshivahs, seminaries, Christian publishers, church movements are selling out and have embraced themselves in the tentacles of the one world religion. One major evangelical seminary recently accepted government money but had to sign an agreement that they would no longer teach students to convert Muslims. Churches are conducting surveys asking people what they should throw out or add in to get people in the community to come to church. Be careful when the world loves the church! Over twenty years ago Francis Schaeffer said, “Americans, just like Germans in the days before the Nazis, will be influenced to give up their constitutional privileges in exchange for (personal) peace (or, affluence)." What he was saying is that Americans will give up their freedom that was bought with the blood of their forefathers because they don’t want their life styles to be disturbed. They want to be at peace! Dr. Robert Morey believes that this may be the LAST generation of Americans that knows freedom and the first that knows tyranny (via the courts, legislation, and martial forces). He states, “We are living in a watershed moment of history like a Christian ostrich!" And may I say here that Israel needs to wake up and stop giving in to the demands of the Palestinians, the Arabs, the UN, the EU, and the USA. IN THE NEXT EPISODE I WILL REVEAL TO YOU THE IDENTITY OF BABYLON, THE HARLOT ... HER SUPPORT SYSTEM ... AND HOW SHE WILL ULTIMATELY BE DESTROYED BY YAHWEH, THE HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL. IN THE MEANTIME, ISRAEL NEEDS TO TAKE A DEFINITIVE STAND TO OPPOSE ANY NATION, GOVERNMENT, OR ENTITY THAT WOULD TRY TO TAKE AWAY HER LAND WHICH IS RIGHTFULLY HERS BY: 1. VICTORY IN WAR; AND 2. BY PROMISE OF G-D. Podcast time: 13 minutes, 7 seconds (with music) Podcast size: 12.0 MB >>> Go to "Babylon, the Enemy of Israel, Exposed - Part 2" __________________________________________________ Prince Handley EDITOR'S NOTE: Do NOT be so concerned with the "666" in the Brit Chadashah being a numerical equivalent to the name of the False Messiah (anti-Christ). REASON: In Yochanan's day (when he received the Revelation from Mashiach Yeshua) he wrote "what he SAW." NOTICE ALSO: He could have seen Arabic (the 666) written from "right to left" instead of Greek. Also, the Greek word for "number" is "arithmos" and could mean "multitude." Therefore, if he SAW Arabic (instead of Greek "666") the whole meaning of the passage in Revelation 13:18 would change to: " ... the multitude in the name of allah." WHY? Because the Arabic could be "X" showing two crossed swords. Islamic warriors wear the armband of "allah" on their forehead and on their right arm when they go to war "in the name of allah." QUESTION: Did the Ruach Elohim (the Spirit of God) show ahead of time the growth and evil world goals of Islam 500 years before it originated through satanic inspiration of Muhammad? And may I say here that Israel needs to wake up and stop giving in to the demands of the Palestinians, the Arabs, the UN, the EU, and the USA. Islamic warriors wear the armband of "allah" on their forehead and on their right arm when they go to war "in the name of allah." Muslim terrorism is now global. You will begin to see the loss of your right to privacy. Israel and the USA will be the key targets of this attack. Islamic terrorism will be the active agent to frighten people into wanting a one world governing body. The Koran instructs Muslims to kill non-Muslims (Jews and Christians). In exchange for being allowed to build her Temple, Israel will sign a peace treaty with the coming world leader: the anti-messiah. A review of the historic world powers and their treatment of Israel ... and how New Babylon will arise from the new 10 nation confederacy. There will be material in these podcasts ... and in the shownotes ... that you will probably NOT find in seminary libraries or in Jewish or Christian bookstores, particularly where it relates to Islam. Because of the urgency of the need for this instruction in the Body of Messiah, I will be releasing these podcasts with shownotes in a format which you can use for training others in your synagogues, churches or fellowships. The title of this podcast, Babylon, The Harlot, Exposed - Part 1, is just that: I am going to show you certain details of the harlot Babylon that are NOT covered by usual dispensational or theological exegesis.
