In this episode, Lily talks about how she became a WCMX athlete, and how she has used her career to shatter prejudices and inspire others. Background It was at the age of 13 when Lily Rice became the first European girl to complete a WCMX backflip. It only took her six hours of practicing to manage this feat. Since the age of ten Lily was diagnosed with hereditary spasticparaplegic, which causes rigidity and tightness in the muscles of her body. She struggled with the future of her being in a wheelchair but was inspired by Aaron 'Wheels' Fotheringham ( an Extreme wheelchair athlete) and changed what it meant to be a wheelchair user. She began trying out simple tricks and took up the sport in 2017 after having acquired her first WCMX chair. She was awarded a silver medal in the world championships in Calfornia in May 2017 and in August 2017 took gold in the European Open in Hamburg, Germany. In 2019 she was named the young sportswoman of the year at the welsh sports awards. She has worked to develop the first WCMX chair in collaboration with ROMA Sport. In this episode, Jessica talks about how to heal from trauma, balance work-life, and entrepreneurship. Background At a very young age, Jessica knew that life was short when she lost her sister in a tragic car accident, Jessica realized she wanted to live her life with a purpose. At the age of 28, she bought her business called Southern Tradition. Shortly after buying southern tradition she saw less money coming in and realized she needed to overhaul her business in order to be successful. In less than a year she transformed her zero profits even company into a seven-figure business by rebranding and naming it Zimmerman events. Around this time she became a mother of twin boys and had a daughter. Shortly after her husband became ill, she knew she had to continue to focus on improving her business in order to support her family while taking care of her husband. In the spring of 2017, she wrote her business story about how she improved her business in an online course called “The Business Behind the Blooms. She is currently the CEO and founder of an online education program called Zimmerman education. In 2020 she released her memoir titled Sleeping with a stranger. Finally, Angel made the realization that acting was her calling and now acts professionally in film, television, and commercials. Ash-Lee Henderson is the first Black woman to serve as the Executive Director of the Highlander Research and Education Center in Tennessee. She identifies as Affrilachian (Black Appalachian) and was born and raised in Southeast Tennessee, attending East Tennessee University. Henderson is an active participant in the Movement for Black Lives and a strong member of the Southern Freedom Movement and resistance of black liberation struggles in the U.S. In this episode, Ash-Lee tells us how her upbringing inspired her to become an activist from a young age and how she has made her lifelong mission to organize and advocate for racial equality and social justice. Elena Bresse is a survivor of the 2013 Boston Marathon Terror Attack. She was at the finish line waiting for her husband Jeff, who was running that year when two bombs exploded. In a split second, her life completely changed. Though she did not lose her life that day, she lost her ability to be in public places and be safe. Her mind could not erase that day and PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder) sneaked up on her causing emotional and physical pain. In this episode: Elena opens up about that horrific day. She tells us what made her decide to fight for her life and turned this tragedy into a platform for mental health advocacy to support survivors struggling with PTSD and other mental health issues. The Warrior Queen of Jhansi is the first Hollywood action film in history with a brown female lead. The film tells the story of the Rani of Jhansi, a historical icon and freedom fighter in India who at 24, was a general, leading her people into battle against the British Empire in 1857. Devika Bhise is an American actress, singer, dancer, and scriptwriter of Indian Origin. She is best known for playing the character of Janaki in the British biographical drama film The Man Who Knew Infinity, starring Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons. On The Warrior Queen of Jhansi, Devika does not only play the lead role but she also co-wrote the script of the film along with her mother Swati Bhise. Swati Bhise is an Indian Classical dancer that has synthesized key elements of classical dramaturgy into both traditional and contemporary choreography in the performing arts. A multifaceted performer, Swati has worked as an actress, choreographer, scriptwriter, TV host, and curator of art and music festivals globally. She is the director and main producer of The Warrior Queen of Jhansi.
