"I was so sad that this might be the case, that I might have ADHD."This week we're peeling back the layers of Kiersten's late diagnosis of ADHD. This episode is unlike any other as we get personal about Kiersten's diagnosis, the societal pressures that shaped her understanding of it, and the impact it has on her relationship with Julien and with money.Join us as we explore the complexities of ADHD and how it can manifest in a partner. You'll hear about the emotional roller coaster that followed and the surprising ways ADHD impacts daily life, especially when it comes to the intersection of money. In 2016, Paulette Perhach wrote a piece proclaiming that all women need an emergency fund — what she calls an “f-off fund.” But when she struggled to secure an emergency fund for herself, she suspected she might have ADHD. Paulette, a successful author and writing coach, put off the evaluation because she couldn't afford the $260 price tag.In this episode of ADHD Aha!, Paulette talks about her trouble with impulse buying and online shopping. She shares her family's history with money issues, including bankruptcy. And she and Laura have an emotional exchange about the ADHD tax. Are you even a writer?I have asked this question so many times… as has (probably) every writer. Paulette Perhach's life started with financial disaster and the accidental death of her father when she was 17, she started started out with a victim mentality. Paulette admits to feeling entitled and waited for success to come to her. It wasn't until she had an experience through the Peace Corps that she learned she had to take responsibility for her own success. She discovered the miracle of self-education during her service in Paraguay. She bought a horse and simply Googled: "How to ride horse." Two weeks later, she was galloping. She's gone on to become an adult-education evangelist, starting a corporate university at a $50M company, creating writing courses, and authoring the book Welcome to the Writer's Life Book—a guide to turning freelance writing into a business. She also wrote a globally viral article that helped millions of women realize the importance of financial power, calledA Story of a F-Off Fund. She is now a successful writer and writing coach, with work in The New York Times, Vox, Cosmo, Glamour, and many more. In this lively podcast interview, Paulette speaks to host Anne Muhlethaler about her early beginnings with writing, how one of her stories, ‘The Fuck-off Fund', went viral, and how this didn't just propel her to the top of literature mountain but zip-lined her (in her own words) to finance media mountain. Since then, Paulette has published her first book, Welcome to the Writer's World, and tells Anne all about the writing and editing process, as well as the courses and services she's currently developing. Paulette, along with the novelist April Davila, also co-created a virtual space for writers during the pandemic, called A Very Important Meeting, offering participants mindfulness meditation and a 45 min focused writing session, with the option to get support on their writing projects from the hosts, who are all accomplished writers themselves. Paulette talks with a lot of humour about her personal challenges with finances, writing, day-jobs, anxiety and how mindfulness and meditation have supported her in finding more balance when managing her anxious mind. Writing is a skill, and like any other skill, we get better at that when we practice it more. As writers, we should think about what we say. First, however, it is mandatory to think about how we say it. Likewise, we may not have a clear idea of how to be a writer, although many of us want it at some point in our lives. That is why we decided to have a deep conversation with someone who specializes in writing. Paulette Perhach, the author of "Welcome to the Writer's Life: How to Design Your Writing Craft, Writing Business, Writing Practice, and Reading Practice," joins us on the podcast today to share her wisdom with our listeners.Other than being an excellent writer, Paulette Perhach is a writing coach and entrepreneur. She has worked for publications such as Health and Coastal Living, and by now, she has her work in even in New York Times. In 2013 a nationally recognized writing center in Seattle, Hugo house, awarded her the Made at Hugo House fellowship. She also won the title as one of BlogHer's Voices of the Year in 2016 for her work.Staring the conversation by talking about the factors that motivate Paulette these days, she continues expressing her views about the role of money in life. During the conversation, she shares her experience of becoming a writer from scratch with a proper balance between earning and passion. Of course, we need to make money to live. But, on the other hand, we need to give our souls time to heal. Highlighting those points, she explains the necessity of balancing our earnings with our passion. A successful writer is not just born. It is a process of hard work and persistence. Most importantly, it is not smooth and easy to continue. Paulette dives deeply into these facts. She shares tips and tricks to awake the writers within ourselves. We talk about the habits and rituals we can embed in our life to become successful writers. Writing is not easy as it sounds. #173: Paulette Perhach is a journalist who has been published in The New York Times, Slate, ELLE, Marie Claire, and Cosmo. But we’re not going to talk about that today. We’re going to talk about the fact that she’s made every decision by putting her life first, and then forcing her career to follow. She’s hiked through jungles and watched eclipses and volunteered with the Peace Corps. She’s been on crazy adventures in far-flung places. She endured unimaginable pain and it’s because of those challenges -- not despite them, but because of them -- that she knows her one precious, wild life is too short to spend in a cubicle. Many people who pursue financial independence are looking for a fully-funded lifestyle change. But Paulette made an unfunded change. She lives her life, and then figures out how the money follows. What can we learn from her resourcefulness? Find out in this episode. For more information, visit the show notes at https://affordanything.com/episode173

Paulette Perhach, Author, Host of Can We Talk About Money podcast Why bother saving money because you’ll either just spend it or give it away. Kathleen and Paulette discuss this myth and the psychology behind saving money and roadblocks to being financially healthy. Key Take-Aways: Understand your money history. Understanding your money history is crucial to understanding your mindset about money, savings, spending, and investing. It is the first step toward changing an unhealthy financial habit. Be compassionate to yourself. Knowing who you are and how you relate to money can help you deal with feelings about wealth and ambivalence about taking financial responsibility. Compassion is key in removing money shame and being more at peace with your finances. Find accountability partners. Make yourself accountable to your financial goals by finding an accountability partner (could be friends, family, or an advisor). We all struggle from time to time and need support. Paulette Perhach’s writing has been published in the New York Times, Vice, ELLE, Slate, Cosmopolitan, and Marie Claire. She was honored as one of the 2016 BlogHer Voices of the Year award for her essay, “Fuck Off Fund,” which has been included in several anthologies. Her book, Welcome to the Writer's Life, is out now from Sasquatch Books, part of the Penguin Random House family of publishers. She lives in Seattle, where she writes from a tiny place and tries to keep her bank account positive. Do you have a f*** off fund? You know, a bit of money you've got in a savings account for emergencies. But I'm not just talking about when your car breaks down or you lose your job. I'm talking about when you need to quit your job because you're being harassed by your boss. Or when you need to leave your abusive boyfriend and need a place to stay. I talk with the woman who coined the term for this episode, and you are definitely going to want to set up a f*** off fund after this. Long description: Before you even listen to this episode of the show, please read my guest Paulette Perhach’s article that went mega-viral — A Story of a Fuck Off Fund. As I mention in this episode, I had a very emotional reaction to her article. It was just such an amazing visual story of why we all need to take care of ourselves by having an emergency fund, so I highly recommend you read it, then listen to our chat together. I know myself and any other personal finance experts out there talk about the importance of having an emergency fund all the time, but her story really can show you how it can be a life-changer. Besides having an article that went viral, Paulette is also the new author of the book Welcome to the Writer’s Life. She writes for all kinds of major publications like the New York Times, Elle and Cosmo, and she knows first-hand how difficult it is to crack into this business as a new writer. So, if you’ve ever thought about being a professional writer, this is literally the playbook on how to get started! For full episode show notes, visit https://jessicamoorhouse.com/174.

An essay went viral earlier this year: a moving story about a woman and the money she may need at any given moment to escape from a job, a sleazy colleague or an abusive partner - it was called A Story Of The Fuck Off Fund. Did you read it? You probably did. It was published on the Billfold, it got retweeted and picked up by Jezebel, Stylist, Refinery 29, the Observer and Salon - some publications even wrote Think Pieces in response, questioning it, praising it, you name it. You know something has really gone viral when old friends from school start posting it on Facebook. I’m here today with the author of this piece Paulette Perhach, a wonderful writer and thinker from Seattle. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
