You spent 20 years building other people's brands. Then that piece of your identity was gone. Now what? Fact #1: Your impressive title or years there, was never your brand. Which then prompts you to ask these questions: > Why, if I never needed a personal brand before, do I need one now? > Why do some folks also on the market thrive and land interviews and I hear crickets? > What's the real reason why my impressive network isn't helping me generate opportunities? (Hint: It's not dead, just dormant) > How can I make my age work for me as my competitive advantage? It's all right here (and more) Spoiler alert: In today's market, your personal brand is essential, not a fluffy nice to have. That's why Former PepsiCo VP of Design and Old Navy creative leader Phil VanDusen is our guest. Today Phil helps industry veterans reinvent their relevance through his community, Bonfire. Julia Herz is only a couple months into her new role as Executive Director of the American Homebrewers Association (https://www.homebrewersassociation.org), but she's long been a craft beer voice and advocate with deep experience in the realm of food and beer pairing. As the former Craft Beer Program Director for the Brewers Association, she developed a library of resources to help brewers understand the nexus of beer and food, and to increase the number and quality of occasions for beer drinking. Now, in her new role as head of the world's largest association of homebrewers, she starts her next chapter thinking about how homebrewing, and craft beer in general, can mean more to even more people than it has in the past. In this episode, Herz discusses: The immediate challenges to homebrewing and long term goals Connecting the professional and amateur sides of brewing Thinking about flavor in a way that's externally relatable Understanding the food flavor triangle Pairing strategies with bridges, links, hooks, and echoes Developing a mind-palate connection and articulating a language of flavor Overcoming flavor bias Making brewing more relevant to those from all walks of like And more. “So many brewers are world-class sensory experts when it comes to beer, but I still want to see brewers come along and understand how to describe flavor and what their beers go with,” says Herz. “Winemakers do know how to do that. Winemakers are in that arena, day in and day out.” *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): What if you could chill your beer with a more efficient chiller? Todd DiMatteo never intended to head up the production side of Good Word Brewing and Public House (https://goodwordbrewing.com) in Duluth, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. However, after a rocky start with a previous brewer forced him to quickly step up to the brewdeck, he embraced the role with verve. Thankfully, his homebrew experience plus more than a decade serving beer at Atlanta's legendary Brick Store Pub provided a palate and a point of view—two things that he's leaned into while further developing Good Word's beer program. Small beers are a big deal for DiMatteo. Through collaborations and core brews, he routinely plays across the beer map—from “petite IPA” to Czech-style dark lager and English-style bitter. In this episode, he talks about the challenges and techniques to brewing small beers, including: sharpening critical faculties to focus on constant improvement finding inspiration in source material for beer styles staying respectful of style and naming conventions, in part to keep styles alive and vibrant key points for maximizing character and minimizing detracting notes in small beers the value of decoction in low-ABV beers evaluating ingredients and selecting them for flavor using multiple lager and ale strains while remaining efficient from a production standpoint spunding for natural carbonation And more. *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): For nearly 30 years, G&D Chillers has set the mark for quality equipment you can rely on. If there was a Guinness world record for most beer collaborations, Kyle Harrup of Horus Aged Ales (https://horusbeer.com) would surely hold it. The 400-plus beers Harrup has brewed with other breweries are even more impressive when you consider that brewing is still a side hustle for the full-time accountant. Today, Horus Aged Ales is known as much for its collaborations as for the beers he brews and releases to club members from his small fermentation warehouse in Oceanside, California. However, one thing that defines all Horus beers is an aggressive yet nuanced approach to using adjunct ingredients. In this episode, Harrup discusses the myriad of ways he and his collaborators employ adjunct ingredients in the pursuit of flavor, including: building base beers with eventual ingredient additions in mind, for better balance brewing barrel-aged beers to high finishing gravities for more robust aging the best bourbon barrel ages and sources developing a family of base recipes for aging and blending developing Cryst-Ale, a barrel-aged beer made with 100 percent crystal malt ingredient methods and variety selection for coffee, vanilla, and coconut using difficult adjunct ingredients, such as nuts pasteurizing for better longevity and flavor And more. *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): What if you could chill your beer with a more efficient chiller? Paul Young- Depression within the BDSM CommunityDepression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and lack of interest, to the extent that it interferes with your daily life. It is a common mental health problem that normally affects around 7% of the American population in a given year. However, that number has skyrocketed this year, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and a cornucopia of other travesties this year has seemingly gift-wrapped for us all. There are lots of reasons why a person might be diagnosed with depression, from simple biological causes to psychological and social issues. Whatever causes depression, it’s important to remember that there is help out there for everyone. If you’ve found this because you’re feeling down or after listening to this you realize you might be struggling with depression, please reach out to someone – whether it’s a friend, family member, counselor, doctor, or online service.National Suicide Hotline: 1-800-273-8255- Quotes:“Depression is living in a body that fights to survive, with a mind that tries to die.” – Danny Baker, author of “Depression is a Liar”“The only thing more exhausting than being depressed is pretending that you’re not.” – Unknown“It’s so difficult to describe depression to someone who’s never been there because it’s not sadness. I know sadness. Sadness is to cry and to feel. But it’s that cold absence of feeling—that really hollowed-out feeling.” – J.K. Rowling, author of “Harry Potter”“Depression, suffering, and anger are all part of being human.” - Janet Fitch, author of “White Oleander”“I’ll never forget how the depression and loneliness felt good and bad at the same time. The new legislation states that consent can never justify grievous or actual bodily harm, even if it was perpetrated for the purposes of sexual gratification. While the bill itself has been rightly celebrated as a groundbreaking step forward for victims and survivors, many people in the BDSM community have expressed specific concern over this new amendment.Actual bodily harm (ABH) can include bruising, scratching, and bite marks, which means that many forms of BDSM – where the mixing of sex and pain is done safely and consensually – could fall squarely within the remit of the new law.“Any marks that last on the skin for longer than 20 minutes class as ABH, and impact play is commonly seen within a BDSM context,” says Aleph*, who is a top (the person in control during play).During impact play, for instance... This is Part 3 featuring chemistry safety tips for cidermakers! Part 1 - How to Make Cider at home, provides a recipe for making a 1 gallon jug of cider Part 2 - Makers Tips for Growth and Cleanliness was the first part of a conversation with the Cider Team at Stormalong Cider in Leominster, Massachusetts. Stormalong Head Cidermaker, Ben Robert-Sano begins with an overview of these 3 components to and then Stormalong Operations Manager Bright McConnell discusses recommended sanitizers to use in cidermaking. [caption id="attachment_5428" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Shannon, Bright, and Ben of Stormalong, MA[/caption] In Part 3 we continue our conversation focusing on Caustic chemicals to use Managing chemicals Acids Chemicals Caustics For cleaning fermentation soils, I recommend gluconated caustic at 1%, or PBW for those of you with aluminum parts. These are dangerous chemicals so wear a dust mask(pbw ) , long gloves and eye goggles when working with the chemicals Cleaning chemicals are most dangerous before dilution, so don't spill. Even a few drips of pure caustic will take gallons of water to wash off , and the residue can transfer, say from your shoes to your hands. Take extra care when handling chemical concentrates and keep a gallon of white vinegar (or hard cider) and a box of baking soda handy for neutralizing, should it get on your skin or clothing.1-1.5 oz per gallon Acids Cleaning also kills bacteria which live in biofilms. In order to maximize this kill, Ben recommends: treating hard water buildup rejuvenate the surface of your stainless steel parts with occasional acid cleaning use strong citric, or Methanesulfonic acid for acid cleaning. nitric/ phosphoric are also effective, but have more environmental impact if on a septic sysytem 1-1.5 oz per gallon Sanitizers For sanitizing the Stormalong Cider team recommends: Iodophor. It is easy to see when it is active. It is effective, requires no rinse, and has minimal flavor impact when properly diluted DO NOT USE STAR SAN it is not an EPA registered cleaner. The Five Star brand makes an iodophor if you prefer their products. Use 1 ounce of Iodophor per 5 gallons, not 1 oz per gallon like the other cleaners CAUTION: Idophor can cause blindness if it contacts your eye. Wear glasses when used. PAA, Sulfites, and CL02 are very effective but are only to be used by commercial scale cideries. spraying or handling these chemicals can cause immediate respiratory or eye damage if used incorrectly. You should always dose these chemicals directly into water, never remove the concentrates from the barrel using a drum pump. Dousatron - for eye dousing set ups in production facility. ETF Trends CEO Tom Lydon discussed the ETF of the Week: iShares Global Clean Energy (ICLN) on this week’s “ETF of the Week” podcast with Chuck Jaffe on the MoneyLife Show. This fund offers a way to invest in the global clean energy index, including both domestic and international stocks in its portfolio. Given the narrow focus, ICLN likely doesn't deserve a huge weighting in a long-term portfolio, but can be useful as a satellite holding to cover a corner of the market that is often overlooked by broad-based funds. For investors who maintain a long-term bullish outlook on the alternative energy space, this fund can be a nice way to achieve broad-based exposure; ICLN includes companies engaged in various sub-sectors, such as wind power, solar power, and other renewable sources. Those seeking more targeted exposure within the clean energy space have multiple options available for betting on solar power (such as TAN or KWT), nuclear power (URA or NLR), or wind power (FAN or PWND). The portfolio maintained by ICLN is somewhat limited; it has only a few dozen holdings, and some of the components account for big chunks of assets. But that is to be expected given the asset class represented; the number of public alternative energy companies is somewhat limited. Other options providing similar exposure include PBW, PBD, and GEX; a comparison of the expenses, allocation to emerging markets, depth of holdings, and breakdown by sub-sector will help to determine which fund is right for their objectives and risk tolerance.

Logan Smith came to record this show on the 11th March, and a lot has changed in the wrestling environment since. This is a superb story of overcoming injuries, self determination, hard work and 52 shoulder dislocations that I really recommend that everyone gives a try. Logan has two of the best answers to any questions I have asked in any podcast, and I feel very motivated in this difficult time after re listening to edit the show mentions of upcoming shows removed to avoid confusion. but when PBW, Pro Wrestling Elite, Pro Wrestling Scotland, Big Massive Wrestling, Respect Wrestling and many others he has become a regular at are back up and running, go check him in action.

SmashCast brings you a road report from Premier British Wrestling in Barlanark, Glasgow! First of all - we apologise for the overall quality of the majority of this show. Technical problems plagued us from the outset but somehow, we have managed to stitch it together into what we think is a great little show. We were in Barlanark Community Centre to watch PBW entertain a sold out crowd, and as well as having some live reports from during the show, we spoke to Scotland's favourite luchador, Lucha DS about wrestling, life, podcasting and much more. Get some on the spot takes from our own Tony and Ant (who was promoting the show) and some live reactions from the fans as the matches are happening. We managed to update the scores on our WrestleMania and NXT predictions at the end of the show (honestly, we had about two hours of content for this show recorded, but dreaded technical gremlins put paid to the bulk of it) and we have a shocking conclusion to this season's league table. Check our twitter feed @WeAreSmashcast for an exciting competition soon - you could win a PBW DVD and poster - and let us know what you thought of the show, if we should try something like this again in the future! This is the first mix that I made using the Solid name. I had just opened for Peanut Butter Wolf's Bad Meaning Good mix LA release party and did this with that style in mind. Many music genres flowing together - representing my influence at the time, favorites around 2004 and records I had just picked up. The mix caught on and the rest is history. Big thanks to my friend PBW!

Philly Beer Week Evil Genius Scavenger Hunt at Lucha Cartel Our good friends at Evil Genius invited us to be a part of their Philly Beer Week Old City Scavenger Hunt/Bar Crawl in which participants had to journey from bar to bar (sipping Evil Genius beers along the way) and participate in some activity at each stop. We held a Happy Fun Time Games Extravaganza at the last stop, Lucha Cartel, and the hunters had to step up to the mic and answer trivia questions to complete their beer-laden quest. Several of the Evil Geniuses also sat down to chat and we got to sample the debut 867-5309 IPA. Many questions were asked, prizes were awarded and craft beer celeb Ashley Rouston (aka The Beer Wench) happend to stop by and stepped up to the mic for a bit and talked about her book, The Beer Wench’s Guide to Beer. So that was pretty awesome.
