Nicknamed "King Kev" or "Mighty Mouse", Keegan was recognised for his dribbling ability, finishing and presence in the air, and is regarded as one of the greatest players of all time.Keegan began his playing career at Scunthorpe United in 1968, before Bill Shankly signed him for Liverpool. There, he won three First Division titles, the UEFA Cup twice, the FA Cup and, in his final season, the European Cup. During this period, he was a regular member of the England national team, and captained the team on 31 occasions, including at UEFA Euro 1980. He moved to Hamburger SV in the summer of 1977 and was named European Footballer of the Year in both 1978 and 1979. Hamburg won the Bundesliga title in the 1978–79 season and reached the 1980 European Cup final. Keegan left Hamburg and played at Southampton for two seasons, before transferring to Newcastle United in the Second Division in 1982. He helped Newcastle secure promotion in his second season, and retired from playing in 1984. He scored 204 goals in 592 appearances in his club career, adding 21 goals in 63 caps for England.He moved into management at Newcastle in 1992, and the team won promotion to the Premier League as First Division champions in his first full season. Newcastle finished second in the Premier League in the 1995–96 season, despite leading the way for most of the campaign. After managing Fulham for two seasons, he took charge of the England national team in February 1999, but resigned in October 2000 following a 1–0 loss against Germany in qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. In 2001, he became manager of Manchester City for four years, until he resigned in 2005.   Liverpool has today lost a legend in Kevin Keegan who has tragically passed at the age of 75, Kevin played 323 times and scored 100 goals for Liverpool, winning three league titles, two UEFA Cups and the FA Cup, Kevin will remembered not just for his contributions on the pitch, but for his charisma, warm personality and kind nature. You can read the interview I did with Intel Lady, published in the Critic, November 2025 issue, below: I am speaking to my favourite satirist, Jenny Stanton, on Zoom, and she is trying to turn off her backdrop. Otherwise known as Intel Lady, Stanton's best known parody is of former deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, speaking to the nation from a bunker, filled with cans of lager, cigarette butts, and a framed photograph of smug, woke radio presenter James O'Brien. I point out to Stanton that she has captured the perfect image of O'Brien looking an absolute plonker. “I don't think he can look any other way, can he,” she replies, laughing. I got to know Stanton after messaging her on X to thank her for providing me with endless entertainment, and have followed her rise to internet fame ever since. Stanton was born into a happy, hardworking family in Leeds in 1979. She started to become interested in acting in her final year of secondary school, having accepted that her first love, music, was not going to be the career for her. “I was obsessed with music, played the guitar, wanted to be a rock star, and then I discovered that I could act. I was a bit of a shit guitarist, and not that great a singer either. It turned out that I was a better actor than I was musician”.Studying performing arts at college, she was advised to go to drama school. “But I thought, do I want to saddle myself with debt for the rest of my life?”Taking what she calls “the scenic route”, she subscribed to The Stage and (between cleaning jobs) applied for as many auditions as possible. She was 19 when she secured her first ever paid acting role, as a street theatre performer at a major theme park. “My favourite job was a cleaner at one of the big bank call centres in Harrogate. I loved that because I didn't have to bloody talk to anybody,” she says. “I could just be in my own little world, running audition pieces through my head whilst hoovering carpets.” In 2004, Stanton auditioned for a part she was desperate to get – a drama series about the building of the Titanic. “I'd never auditioned at TV studios before, it was an overwhelming experience,” she recalls. An agonizing week later her agent called to tell her she had been offered the part. Prior to this, Stanton had been a touring theatre actor, “which means I was poor,” she laughs. In true Titanic style, the shoot was an utter disaster. Filmed that summer, on location in Liverpool, it rained so heavily that some of the trailers floated away. The director decided to move to a studio. “But on that day, there was a heatwave,” she says, “and everyone was in their full-dress corsets and layers of clothing, sweating like mad.”Months later, Stanton heard the terrible news that her scene had been cut, because it looked so unnatural. “I ended up as nothing more than an extra,” she says. “All I wanted was my name in the Radio Times, because that means you've made it. I was gutted.”She stopped acting professionally when pregnant with her son, born in 2007. Five years later, she had a daughter. Both children were subsequently diagnosed with autism, and Stanton gave up acting to care for them.However, the lure of performing eventually drew her back, and in 2021, during lockdown, she introduced Intel Lady to the world. “The name was inspired by the QAnon grifters (far-right conspiracy theorists) I was covering. They all had ‘insiders' with ‘intel'. So I created a character who used to feed them complete claptrap. I would answer the phone with “MI5 paid asset helpline, how many I help you?”Stanton soon tired of these people, “because they're insane and they're not going to change”. Looking around at what else was going on, she landed on the Johnny Depp - Amber Heard trial, so parodied that. “And then I started looking at politicians”.Her first victims were American: former US Vice-President Kamala Harris and liberal commentator Rachel Maddow – but it wasn't long before she set her sights on British politicians Nadine Dorries and Liz Truss. Then she looked to the opposite side of the bench, and Angela Rayner caught her eye. “I started covering her in 2022, and, when Labour were elected, realised she was going to play a prominent role in government. So I worked really hard to get her right”.In 2024, Stanton released a video of her perfected parody. Set in a filthy hotel room in Ibiza littered with empty champagne bottles, it featured a swimsuit-clad Rayner, asking “Why is everyone getting upset, just because I was having a dance and enjoying myself?”It was a colleague, Rik, who came up with the idea of moving Rayner into Lord Ali's apartment, with the backdrop exactly as it had been when Starmer once did a speech from there. The idea was a keeper. “She would always allude to it as her ‘mate's apartment'. “All declared, all above board.”Stanton explains how the infamous backdrop came about: “One day a crumpled-up can of Tennents [Lager] appeared behind me, slightly hidden by one of the framed photographs of James O ‘Brien. And then the next time, a full ashtray appeared and then, a clothes horse with knickers on it and bras hanging off it.”She says that some comedians think the only things it is acceptable to laugh at are Trump, Farage or Brexit, but that she doesn't have a political agenda. “Anyone is fair game,” she says. “I find humour in pretty much everything, even the most horrifying situations. I think it's quite a British thing.”In her recent Big Brother parody, one contestant gets called into the Diary Room for the crimes of misgendering, homophobia, and disability discrimination. Another character is Carol, a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) trainer for the NHS, who Stanton loves to play. “The jokes are ridiculous… because it's their world. It's their language. It's crazy to regular people.”People keep asking Stanton how she writes. She says, “It's all ad-libbed. I go into character, I press record, you're in character. It usually takes me between five and sometimes 15 attempts to get it right – or the doorbell rings”. She first became aware of her own rising popularity when Tracy-Anne Oberman started following her. Stanton was shocked, “I was checking that it was her real account”. But then a private message came, saying, “I love your No Brainer with Angela Rayner, it's bloody genius. Keep doing it”. Not long after that, she saw that “somebody called JK Rowling” had followed her on X. “I thought, let's see, they've got two followers or something, and I clicked on it, and I had to sit down because it actually is JK Rowling, she's actually following me!”When Comedy Unleashed asked her to do Rayner in a tiny Westminster pub called The Speaker, Stanton knew it would be a dream come true for her to perform there, and panicked. But then there she was, “stood on a crate on top of beer barrels”, wearing a hard hat, hi-vis, a really ugly pink dress and “the worst shoes you've ever seen” before an audience of bewildered journalists and politicians who had no idea who she was. Stanton describes that evening as the weirdest, weirdest night, but her Rayner triumphed: “I don't know why everyone's getting upset. It's not even a banter ban. I don't know why you're calling it a banter ban because it isn't that. It's about respecting people's boundaries and not saying offensive stuff, that's all.” Stanton says she's “very fond” of Marjorie and Gerald from Just Stop Oil. “I think it's hard not to love her because she's just ludicrous. And it's that cantankerous old lady vibe that people just are too frightened to argue with. And Gerald has become such a creep. He started out with a slight bladder weakness and now he's turned into a piss fetishist.”The minute Just Stop Oil popped up on the news, Stanton knew she had to cover them. “The activists are the most bonkers,” she says, and found it hilarious when she got a “barrage of abuse” from people unaware it was satire. “They told me they hoped I'd get run over and stuff. And I would just come back to them in character because it was just too good not to. I could spend hours a day just responding to them and laughing my socks off”. I ask about plans to develop new characters. “There's always room for more. I try and just keep my eye on what's going on in the news and the celebrity world. And if something catches my eye and I think they are worth the parody, then I will parody them,” she says. “If you're in power, I'm going to cover you, especially if you're ridiculous, even better.”Does she have plans for Reform and Farage? “Oh yes! When Reform get in, and I think it is more of a when, than [an] if, I will be keeping a very close eye on the ladies in the party.”With the world as crazy as it is right now, with Green Party activists shouting ‘Queers for Palestine' at its annual conference, and Emma Watson doing a reverse ferret on JK Rowling, Stanton will not be running out of material any time soon.I have one last question for her. How did she feel when she heard that Angela Rayner, one of her most famous caricatures, had resigned? “I was gutted, as I love playing her. But she will definitely be back! I have a theory that she'll do ‘I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here', in which case, I will be all over it.” So will I. This is a public episode. Kevin Keegan the former England footballer and manager, has died at the age of 75.It was announced in January that Keegan had been diagnosed with stage four cancer, with his family revealing he was to begin treatment.Most revered for his feats as a manager at Newcastle and as a player at Liverpool, Keegan forged a successful career that included three First Division titles, one FA Cup, one European Cup, and two UEFA Cups as well as two Bundesliga titles between the years of 1968 and 1984.Keegan's traits as a forward was founded on his pace and ability with the ball, and he formed a formidable strike partnership with John Toshack, and was at the heart of Liverpool's prosperous side in the 1970s under Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.As a manager, Keegan took Newcastle from the second tier into the Premier League and to their best-ever second finish, earning the nickname ‘King Kev', and signed some of the club's most iconic players, including Alan Shearer.Here in this podcast, Keegan joined his old friend and rival, John Giles to mark Giles' 80th birthday back in 2020, and the duo alongside Nathan Murphy reminisced on that punch and the glory days of the 70s and 80s.Become a member and sign up at offtheball.com/join

Raise your hand if you saw this one coming. LIV Golf has been downright invisible for more than a month.  The last action featuring the upstart golf league took place on June 7 in Spain. The next LIV Golf event (perhaps) is expected to take place next Thursday, July 23 in the United Kingdom.  August will feature three tournaments in New York, Indianapolis, and Michigan to end the 2026 season. In case you missed it, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) has already told the LIV Golf players that Daddy Big Bucks won't be around to lose another billion or more next year to support the league. There has been chatter during this one month LIV Golf lull that the Saudis might even pull the plug prior to next week's golf tournament in Staffordshire, England. Stay tuned! This week, the fourth major golf tournament of the year is being held at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale (located 50 miles northwest of Liverpool, England). After two rounds, nine members of the LIV Golf contingent have made their presence known at The Open – loud and clear Leading the Open after two rounds was none other than LIV Golf's Lucas Herbert at eight under par.  Who dat, you ask?  The unassuming Herbert is an Australian golfer who participates as a member of the LIV Golf's popular “Ripper GC” team. Lucas Herbert is only 30 years old.  He won a single PGA Tour event in October, 2021 in Bermuda against a less-than-stellar field.  Herbert then moved over to LIV Golf in January, 2024 to team up with fellow Aussies Cam Smith, Marc Leishman, and Elvis (Smiley, that is). Herbert (whose caddie looks like a guitar player for ZZ Top) won the May, 2026 LIV Golf tournament in northern Virginia.  His blazing 24-under par total produced a four-shot victory. Lucas Herbert tied the Open record on Friday with a second round 8-under par 62.  He missed a three foot birdie putt on the 18th hole which would have given him a new record with a sizzling 61. He told the assembled press afterwards, “It's a pretty good problem to have – to be disappointed you shot a 62!” When the second round ended, Herbert took a one shot lead into the weekend over fellow LIV Golf star and team captain of the “Crushers” team, Bryson DeChambeau. Well, at least for a few minutes… Bryson DeChambeau rolled in a 16-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole on Friday to post a 7-under par total and take solo second place.  He was expecting to be paired with LIV Golf's Lucas Herbert on Saturday as he walked off the 18th green following Round 2. Royal & Ancient tournament officials visited with Bryson DeChambeau as soon as he walked toward the clubhouse to sign his scorecard.  They wanted to discuss a possible rules infraction which happened way back on Hole #5 of the second round Friday. Bryson DeChambeau bombed a long tee shot, but it was far off line to the right side of the fairway.  His golf ball landed in a marshy area surrounded by knee-high fescue grass.  As DeChambeau walked around and then behind the ball to line-up his second shot, he accidentally stepped onto some of the fescue behind the ball.  The rules officials deemed the temporarily depressed grass to give the golfer an unfair advantage. DeChambeau gave a passionate explanation of his version of the story.  He pleaded with the officials that the shot he played was not affected by the squished-down nearby grass.  No matter.  He was still assessed a two shot penalty to balloon his bogey 5 into a triple bogey 7 on Hole #5. Those extra two shots changed his second round total score from -7 to -5.  It dropped DeChambeau from solo second place into a three way tie for fifth place. Afterwards, he said, “Obviously disappointed with the ruling.  I don’t agree with it, but it is what it is.  This fires me up.  Onto the weekend.  Let’s get it!” It wasn't the only time that DeChambeau was in the news this week at The Open Bryson DeChambeau is a former US Amateur champion and has won two US Opens.  His unusual golfing style (extremely long drives, a set of irons which are all the same length, and a wonky upright putting stance) make him easy to notice on the golf course.  His bright smile and affable personality have added to his popularity – especially with younger golf fans. One former golfer who isn't enthralled with DeChambeau's golf style is former champion Nick Faldo. Earlier in the week, Faldo took to the microphone to say that Bryson DeChambeau had little or no chance of winning the Claret Jug trophy which goes to the winner. The six-time major champion commented, “I’d say it to his face.  DeChambeau has zero clue of strategy.”  He added, “He (DeChambeau) said last year, ‘I’m going to go out and attack the links.’  Well, I’ve never attacked the links.  You thread it…feed it down the fairway.” To his credit, Bryson DeChambeau didn’t directly respond to Nick Faldo’s barbed remarks. LIV Golf’s “Hot Temper Twins” haven’t disappointed, either What’s the first thing you think of when I say, “Terrell Hatton?” Some might say, “Who?”  Golf fans like me think of “Hot Head Hatton.” The club-flinging, four-letter-word-hurling Hatton found himself at -3 heading into Saturday’s third round. The LIV Golf competitor was paired with Scottie Scheffler (-4) and Bryson DeChambeau during the first two rounds at this year’s Open.  The cameras found Hatton on the verge of club-chunking a few different times during Thursday’s opening round. Then there’s LIV Golf’s $300 million bonus man, Jon Rahm.  Like Hatton, the intense Spaniard has a long history of temper eruptions on the golf course. Friday’s second round featured Jon Rahm (-4 for the tournament) flinging an iron which bounced off the tee box on the par-3 15th hole. Rules officials handed Rahm an official warning afterwards. The four major golf championships are (yeah, right) cracking down on bad behavior on the course.  Rules officials now have the option of issuing a warning, a two shot penalty, or, if warranted, a disqualification. With Rahm being a two-time major golf champion, he was fortunate not to be assessed a two-shot penalty after Friday’s latest temper outburst. A LIV golfer may not hoist the Claret Jug on Sunday, but they’ve stolen the show The other five LIV Golf players who made the cut at The Open were Thomas Detry, Josele Ballester, Victor Perez, Peter Uihlein, and Laurie Canter. You can say a lot about LIV Golf, but several of the nine players who made the cut at this year’s Open Championship have definitely spiced-up this week’s competition. A perilous financial future lies ahead for LIV Golf at the end of August (assuming they are still in business at that point). The economics of the league are not sustainable.  Saudi’s fat wallet (now more than $5 billion lighter) will be unavailable soon after enduring four years of massive losses.  Defections by Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed this season have also hurt LIV Golf.   Don’t forget that Bryson DeChambeau’s contract expires at the end of 2026. All signs point to a rough landing ahead for LIV Golf. Let’s enjoy their contingent of talented and spicy golfers this weekend at The Open – while we still have time. Most places you visit are marked by the different stages of their development, or the businesses that thrived there, and Dublin is no different. Depending on where you find yourself there are similarities with Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Oxford and of course Liverpool.I guess the reason why it seems more obvious in Dublin is the way that in collides, most notably in the buildings along ether side of the quays, toward the port area, because the style of this development was never intended to blend in.
