Taking your shoes off before you enter a home is a thoughtful gesture and something many people have done for a long time. And it really is good idea. Why? Listen as I explain what people track in on the bottom of their shoes besides dirt. It's really pretty disgusting. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2019/07/03/my-shoes-dirty-studies-suggest-theyre-covered-fecal-bacteria/1637780001/ Whether you like Amazon or not, you have to admire the incredible success that company has achieved with Jeff Bezos at the helm. How did Amazon get to be such a giant company so fast? You see their trucks everywhere, many of us send or receive products and do a lot of shopping on Amazon. Beyond that there is Alexa, Kindle, Whole Foods, and much more to Amazon. Is Jeff Bezos just a genius? Why didn't someone else think of this before or at least try to compete better? Someone who understands Amazon well is Brad Stone, senior executive editor for global technology at Bloomberg News and the author of Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire (https://amzn.to/3hxau9u). Listen as he takes us inside the workings at Amazon and explains how Jeff Bezos did what he did – the good and bad. Speaking and listening. You do those two things more than any others all day long. Yet, you were probably never taught how to speak or how to listen – at least not in any formal way. However, the better you are at these skills, the more interesting people will think you are and the more effective you will be in life according to my guest Julian Treasure. He is a leading expert in communication and sound and is author of the book How to be Heard: Secrets for Powerful Speaking and Listening (https://amzn.to/3hEMyBk). We should all be audience-centric in communication. But, as Julian Treasure contests, we need to take it one step further. What is the listening I am speaking into?, he says, is the question every speaker should ask themselves over and over."Every human being's listening is unique ... we listen through a set of filters and those filters develop as we grow and mature in life and we have experiences. Knowing where the person is coming from, you'll be able to sense their listening."Treasure, an expert on speaking and sound, also offers advice on the breathing techniques that can transform one's speech. "If you want to speak powerfully, develop a breathing practice. And that can be as simple as conscious breathing, which is breathing in through the nose, out through the mouth."In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Treasure and host Matt Abrahams explore the power of breath; the four steps to show someone we're engaged and listening; and how by framing speech as a gift, we can better serve our audience. Treasure is the author of Sound Business. His most recent book, How to be Heard: Secrets for Powerful Speaking and Listening, is based on his TED Talk. Julian Treasure is an expert in communication and one of the most powerful speakers in the world. How do I know that? He has the sixth most watched TED talk ever given and all of his TED appearances combined have over 135 million views. When he speaks, people listen. And that's the crux of what he teaches. Speaking and listening are fundamental skills in our lives and careers but very few people ever practice them. We don't teach them in school or business, yet we rely on our voice and ears day-in-day out to effect changes we want to see. In our conversation, we first talk about the lost art of listening and speaking before getting tactical about how to improve both of those skills. We also discuss the long list of invisible reasons we should spend more time thinking about sound. After our conversation, I debrief Julian's lessons and insights with Matt. Please enjoy this masterclass on communication. NJ Lechnir is author of Leapfrogging Success: 5 Simple Steps to Powerful Presentations and Public Speaking for Nerds, Techies and Introverts. Having struggled with depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts, and having intense anxiety with public speaking, he decided to break out of his shell and change his life. Working as a successful Learning and Development professional, he is also founder of a revolutionary platform called The LEAPS Method, a 5 step framework that he developed and teaches in learning courses, workshops, books, articles, videos, and coaching to help anxious analytical introverts become powerful speakers and presenters. In NJ's words: "I help and teach anxious analytical introverts to become powerful speakers and presenters, improve communication skills, and develop confidence, as well as personal and professional growth. I am also in a lifelong process of healing from trauma, associated with growing up around an alcoholic father. As a result, I've always struggled with anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Speaking about my experiences in public and letting others like me know they are not alone is helping me heal." 3 top tips for my audience: 1. You don't have to be a perfect speaker to deliver an important message. Strive for excellence with your own style, not perfection. All speeches are a performance at the basic level. Learn to have fun with it. 2. Understanding your own personality is critical to delivering a speech topic in your own style with the most effective outcome. Extraverts don't necessarily make great speakers, and introverts are often underestimated on how powerful they really are. 3. A lifetime of struggle with anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts are no fun, but there is help, and you can develop a productive, confident, fulfilling and beautiful life on your own terms. Listen to Julian Treasure, leading sound and communication expert, in conversation with Prof. Hitendra Wadhwa, exclusively on Intersections. You will discover the secrets behind powerful speaking. Julian is a renowned TED-speaker - 5 of his TED talks have been watched more than 100 million times, and his talk on 'How to speak so that people want to listen' is in the top 10 TED talks of all time. He is the author of two books: How to be Heard: Secrets for Powerful Speaking and Listening, and Sound Business.
Julian Treasure is a leading Ted Speaker and founder of The Sound Agency. We catch up with him to talk about how sound affects us on four different levels: physiologically, psychologically, cognitively and behaviourally. He discusses dynamic biophilic soundscapes and how we can use nature in improving acoustics and how we should be using good sonic design and aural architecture to make the places we work in, learn in and heal in, better.Sound is such a profound gift, our ear-drum is the size of the nail on our little finger, and yet this little membrane helps us decode the voices of our loved ones or Beethoven's 9th. The sound is turned into impulses in fluid which is picked up by little hairs which respond to different frequencies, and as the move they trigger neural impulses which go to the brain. This physical, electrical, mechanical and neural process is a miracle when you think about it, and yet it is the sound of our environment which is often last on the agenda when it comes to design. Musicians live through their ears, and as such are more sensitive to the soundscapes around us. Julian discusses the challenges of the open plan office (which we've discussed the negative implications of before on this podcast) and what we can do about it. He mentions research that noted that hospitals can be so noisy, that they can rise to 12 times the World Health Organisation's maximum noise levels by day, and in schools, one German study found that the average level was 65db (projectors, fans, group work, all the technology, and so on), how on earth do we expect children to learn, when they are trying to decode that the teacher is telling them? He says it's like watering your garden and missing the plants! As a positive solution, his work at the Sound Agency and with one of his products, Moodsonic, he creates biophilic nature soundscapes. These beautiful biophonic sounds are used in different zones, for instance to encourage focus, relaxation or for blocking out the consonants of unwanted conversations (he describes how this works in the podcast). This is a fascinating podcast and one that deserves a couple of listens to, it is inspiring for anyone involved in making spaces happier and healthier for everyone, whether that's at home, town or city level, in healthcare, education, retail, any space. Let's reconnect with nature, embrace circadian rhythms and look at how we can make all our spaces better acoustically, designing without cacophony and embracing dynamic soundscapes that help connect people to the outdoors through responsive sound. To find out more about Julian, visit his website https://www.juliantreasure.comOr download his audio book which will inspire you to be better listeners and better speakers too: How to be Heard: secrets for Powerful Speaking and Listening.Credits: with thanks to George Harvey Audio Production for the calming biophilic soundscape that backs all our podcasts. Julian Treasure knows a thing or two about how to speak well. He's given five TED talks which have been watched over 125 million times, including one on, well, how to speak well, which resides in the top ten TED talks of all time. But as a former audio branding strategist, Julian got his start in the world of hearing, and as the title of his book — How to Be Heard: Secrets for Powerful Speaking and Listening — implies, he believes that if you really want to be a good communicator, you've got to learn how to be a good listener. So that's where we begin our conversation today. Julian shares why becoming a skilled listener is so important, and the practices you can use to do so. We then segue into the vocal part of communication, and Julian shares the four foundations for powerful speaking that apply whether you're talking in a casual conversation or on the TED stage. He discusses what separates the best TED talks from the just so-so, the breathing practice and posture cue that will improve the effectiveness of your vocal toolbox, and how to make your voice more resonant. We also discuss the physical gestures to generally avoid when speaking, including "the placater," and a highly effective tip for refining your body language. DN118 with Julian Treasure- Learn the Skill Of Listening and Speaking DreamNation’s guest for today is a a sound and communication expert. Ever dreamed of being a public speaker? Julian Treasure is the man to listen to! His business is all about advising businesses on how to use sound in their physical spaces and communication. As a man, he is more to that. His passion is for the world to sound better and for people to be inspired to listen consciously and to express themselves beautifully. This is exactly what we are learning in today’s episode! As a young boy, Julian is a quite, academic, stubborn and results-oriented kid. He’s deep into reading and music. He is an over-all introverted person, which tells us that those great on stage and speaking do not necessarily mean they are extroverted. Like what Julian says, listening and speaking are skills, which, like all other skills, can be learned and practiced. Julian grew into a powerful speaker, incrementally. Today, his vision is to help people how to listen consciously and speak powerfully. If you wanted to know how powerful Julian speaks, you can easily find his five-part TED Talks series which garnered more than 100 million views. Transform your communication skills today! Start by listening to this podcast in full! Here’s What You Missed What is intentional communication? What are the great attributes entrepreneurs should have?● Why is listening a skill? What is the circle of communication? How to speak powerfully? How to create an interesting conversation? Knowledge Nuggets [5:21] Intentional communication. Thinking about what effect do I want to have? What's the result. What's my intention for this conversation. And then structuring communication one to many. Then listening. If you don't listen, how can you lead people? [6:31] You start with small things and you work up by degrees unless you happen to be, you know, unbelievably, naturally talented, which is a rare thing. [7:20] Life as a spiral staircase. If you go around the mound, it's similar, but every day is the same, we sleep and wake up. But ideally there's an elevation in each day. My biggest question to myself in any day is have I grown at all today? [11:49] Stubborn is one of two great attributes of an entrepreneur. You have to be pigheaded stubborn, just stupid, stubborn. Because a lot of the time you're going through stuff which most people would say, that's it. I'm out of here. It's the inner flame, the conviction that you'll get there in the end. Second is the willingness to take the jump. so you have to be stubborn and you have to be a risk taker. [16:26] Confusion of opinions with facts. They are two different things, but unfortunately in most of the world, they are very, very confused at the moment. they're conflated. Most people think they are they're, their opinions are indeed facts or many people do. [19:07] I think creating team is absolutely critical if you're going to make something successful and that requires humility. It requires knowing what you're good at and then what you're not good at and surrounding yourself with the people who do this stuff. "Have fun, make money and work with people you like." [24:07] Listening is a skill. The interpretation of what you hear is listening, making meaning of a sound. You can practice it and you can get better at it. Consciousness about listening is critical.4Cs of LISTENING: Consciousness, compassionate, Commitment, Curiosity [27:40] The circle of communication. It's a circle because the way I speak affects the way you listen, the way you listen to affects the way I speak, the way I speak affects the way you speak and the way you listen affects the way I listen and so forth. There's all this interrelationship happening all the time. [28:33] I think it's difficult to be continually powerful in speaking, if you don't listen to other people. [31:01] It's not about you. It's always about the gift you can give to the audience and it's about them and where you leave them at the end of your talk, which is a different place to where they were at the beginning. [35:07] It's very important to be listening to opposing views. So, "looking good" and "being right"are things that we have to be very, very conscious of inside. [38:11] R.A.S.A. Receive, appreciate, summarize, ask- the four pillars of really interesting conversation. [41:47] Big change always starts with one person. Take the next step and see what turns up. Be true to your values.
