In this episode, Charmaine Husum joins to discuss how art therapy can be a powerful tool for psychedelic preparation and integration. Charmaine is a Registered Art Therapist, Somatic Counsellor and Kundalini Yoga Teacher with over 12 years of experience supporting psychedelic preparation and integration. Her courses train professionals globally using specifically developed protocols in trauma-informed, harm-reduction practices, with her book, Psychedelics and Art Therapy: A Trauma-Informed Manual for Somatic Self Expression (Routledge, 2025), endorsed by numerous experts in the field including Stan and Brigitte Grof. In this discussion, Charmaine distinguishes between art as therapy and art therapy, emphasizing that the latter involves clinically informed, trauma-sensitive practices that externalize inner experiences to support healing. She outlines structured protocols used before and after psychedelic experiences, including creating visual representations of inner strength, setting intentions, and integrating experiences through multi-phase art exercises. Throughout, Charmaine emphasizes choice, embodiment, and the historical roots of art in altered states, offering a rich alternative for those seeking non-verbal, experiential ways to work through trauma and transformation. In this episode, you'll hear: The types of art and materials employed in art therapy How art therapy can be employed to support preparation for a psychedelic experience Using art therapy for grounding and restabilization following an intense psychedelic journey Judith Herman's three stage model of healing trauma Why drawing a self portrait with one's non-dominant hand could be therapeutic Pursuing shadow work in art therapy Working with a client's perfectionism in art therapy Quotes: “[Art therapy] is not about making art, actually. It's about being in the present moment, about moving materials, about allowing for often a cathartic release, and giving expression to what we often don't have words for.” [3:14] “Art therapy isn't just about making the art, it's about processing the art afterwards.” [7:48] “Art therapy is very helpful when we're trying to express something that's ineffable—something without words—which is… at the heart of psychedelics. There's often no words to describe what our experience has been. And so using creativity can be a real help there.” [29:06] Links: Centre of the HeArt website Centre of the HeArt on Instagram Centre of the HeArt on Facebook Charmaine on LinkedIn Charmaine's book: Psychedelics and Art Therapy: A Trauma-Informed Manual for Somatic Self Expression Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui

"Oftentimes when people go into it they become isolated, they think 'I'm the only person going through this', and people become their own islands of isolation or loss or grief, and where healing happens is where you can meet another person and say 'hey, this is what happened for me' and that person says 'wow you know what, that happened for me, and this is how it's affected me, this is how I dealt with it' and all that." This week's Magnificent Mujer podcast features Berenice Badillo a Chicano Park muralist, community artist, and a Registered Art Therapist certified in EMDR, a recently minted PhD doctor and a self proclaimed, “lover, dreamer, and person who loves social justice”. While a dreamer she might be, this Mujer is a fierce embodiment of “Love in Action”. From leading art making support groups for undocumented immigrant families to advocating for social justice for DACA recipients to her humble beginnings painting on a pillar at Chicano Park with house paint and cigarette butts, Berenice demonstrates that in our community bonds we can unveil our truest self and that all of us are creators in our core. Berenice painted her second painting ever with house wall paint from her home, because that’s all she could afford, on a pillar at Chicano Park at the young age of 17, a dream inspired at the age of 14. Berenice’s story is an inspiring testimony of the power of art, love and determination in the Chicano Movement crossing generations with a fierce will to express her unique reflection of hope and personal vulnerability. Today, Berenice provides supervision to interns/trainees, individual, family and group therapy services. Berenice works as a mental health counselor at MiraCosta College, is a professor and researcher and provides art therapy workshops to veterans at The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. She is an immigrant from La Piedad, Michoacán, Mexico and has found herself straddling the many worlds of intertwined cultural and subcultural identities throughout her life. Natasha Helfer Parker interviews Dr. Tammy Nelson, author of The New Monogamy: Redefining Your Relationship After Infidelity, regarding the complicated issues and tasks associated with recovering from infidelity. So many applicable things are discussed, whether you have experienced infidelity in your relationship or not. How do we define infidelity in the first place? How does having dialogue about what monogamy means help prevent infidelity? What can one expect to experience when they have found out their partner has been unfaithful? What are some ways to categorize the different stages of crisis and healing a couple might go through as they deal with betrayal? How do we negotiate our sexual relationships in regards to what some would consider benign behaviors like being attracted to other people, masturbation, and flirtation all the way to deciding to open one’s marriage to the sexual or romantic involvement of other people? When does infidelity point towards the end of a relationship? How do we find meaning in betrayals – as far as what they tell us about our relationships and our roles in them? What’s the difference between forgiveness and empathy – and what roles do these play? A wonderful overview of the many complexities and possibilities couples are facing as they decide how to move forward after a significant betrayal. Tammy Nelson, PhD is a licensed psychotherapist in private practice, a relationship expert and international speaker, an author, a faculty member and teacher for over 25 years. She holds a Doctorate in Philosophy in Clinical Sexology, is a Board Certified Sexologist, a Diplomat of the American Board of Sexologists, a Licensed Professional Counselor, an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, a Registered Art Therapist, a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, a Certified Imago Relationship therapist and an Advanced Imago Clinician. I’m talking to Brian Lewis, MFT. Brian is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Registered Art Therapist specializing in teen, individual, couples, and family psychotherapy. He has a private practice in Auburn and Roseville in Northern California. He is also a husband and father of two teenagers. Brian works with adults and teens, and focuses on creating relationships based on truth and trust. Find him at http://www.brianlewistherapy.com. Brian says, “Therapy is a process of unhooking the pieces of your soul that got snagged on the jagged points of your traumatic past and brining them back together into your current-self consciousness”. There’s a difference in how we feel internally, and how we present to the world. For instance, Brian discovered in his training to become a therapist who uses art as a healing method, as he says, “I’m a pretty mellow guy but all these angry paintings came out of me”. When it comes to trauma, there is only so much you can do by talking about it. Often, there is no verbal or logical memory or access point to why something that triggered you today originally got created when you were much younger. Brian walks us through the central developmental phases of growing up from childhood to adulthood, and how it we get “pieces of our souls snagged on the jagged points of life”. We talk about the dangers of self-diagnosing phycological disorders, or even more tricky, trying to diagnose your partner, and why you can’t be your partner’s “therapist”. Today, when you google some type of disorder and read through the symptoms, it can easily appear as though you, your partner or child, is suffering from that disorder. But it’s not that simple. Brian shares his Whole Self Counseling Approach where you self-examine the 4 quadrants of yourself, The Intellectual Self, the Physical Self, the Emotional Self, and the Spiritual Self, and he gives simple tips for how you can begin to create real change for yourself, in your life, and in your relationships. Often, when we are in pain today, or riddled with anxiety or stress, we have a big wound in our Emotional Self. In every wound there is pain, power, and potential, and much too often, we get stuck in the pain portion. Brian shares his process for how to shift attention and energy away from the pain-points to the power and potential instead. Plus, we talk about how this all relates to our personal relationships. I am always inspired when I come across people sharing their full, creative selves with the world. Ann Lawton is one of those people, not only making beautiful things and putting them out there, but also supporting people struggling in some way with expressing their soul through creating something with their hands as an art therapist. Join us for a conversation on how art can be used to express our innermost selves when words fail us, how we can overcome our fear of rejection/not being good enough to just start playing with color or even Dollar Store toys, to re-discover our creative nature and express what's deep within us longing to come out. Be sure to check out at 17:00 our conversation around what happens to squelch children's creativity, increasing our self-doubt, at a young age and how our traditional educational system needs to change to support our self-expression. Ann E. Lawton believes that art has the potential to heal, transform and empower individuals and communities. As a Registered Art Therapist, she has worked with inmates, domestic abuse survivors, young adults with depression and anxiety, addicts and individuals with cognitive impairments. As an artist, Lawton investigates the essences of everyday experiences and circumstances. Visual expression and the process of art making allows her the perspective to transform random, seemingly meaningless events into meaningful and contemplated moments of significance. The splices of paper and washes of paint in her work try to blend the balance between spontaneity and structure visually, yet also serve as the symbolic mirror of the constant swell and swale of finding that balance in her personal and professional life. Lawton received her Bachelors of Science in Broad Area Art with a minor in psychology from the University of Wisconsin—River Falls and her Masters in Science in Art Therapy from Mount Mary University in Milwaukee. She teaches full-time in the art department at UWRF and conducts adult and child art enrichment classes at various local institutions in Western Wisconsin. True Calling Project | Finding Purpose and Meaning In Life and Career
Lanie Smith is the owner and founder of Integrative Art Therapy and Registered Art Therapist. She is on a mission to reduce the chronic burnout that is common for so many women, parents, helpers, and healers using the power of art, nature, and the creative process. You don’t have to be artistic or have any art experience to benefit from art therapy. Lanie didn’t discover art until she was 18-years-old. Everyone has a creative side, some of us just lose touch with that part of ourselves as we go through adolescence and become more self-conscious. “This isn’t about you being the best or the worst artist. We’re not judging it. We’re just using a non-verbal style of communication here. This is just another outlet for you to express yourself.” Embracing creativity can help change behaviors that are reinforced by ourselves and society, and these behaviors can cause us to push ourselves and burn out. You can embrace creativity in any part of your life – it doesn’t have to involve putting pen to paper or paint to canvas. You can be creative in the kitchen, at work or even in your closet. There’s no limit to the number of ways that we can be creative. “You are enough. Regardless of how overwhelming things might seem, whether you’re starting a new practice or you’re a new graduate in school or a parent with multiple kids, you are enough.” Lanie and her practice are a much-needed force of welcoming and warming in an over-worked world. Learn more about Lanie and her practice at IntegrativeArtTherapy.net and learn about her new project, a couple’s retreat with her significant other, at TheHeartMattersRetreat.com.
