In this revealing episode, Dr. Tammy Nelson and Gabe Howard delve into the myths and realities of monogamy, infidelity, and open relationships. Discover surprising insights from Ashley Madison data and Dr. Nelson's extensive research, revealing that women, not men, are often the gatekeepers of monogamy. Explore the dynamics of emotional and physical connections outside traditional boundaries, and learn how couples can navigate discussions about open relationships without damaging trust. Whether you're curious about alternative lifestyles or seeking to understand the evolving landscape of modern relationships, this episode promises to challenge your perceptions and spark thoughtful conversations. Listen now! “I don't know if it's about not being under someone's thumb. I mean, women have always had affairs, even in cultures where you can be beheaded and stoned to death in the street, women still cheat as often as they ever have. So I mean, that's an interesting statistic. Like, why are we looking for alternative relationships even when it could kill us? You know, it's hard to get really good statistics on how often people cheat because cheating is based on dishonesty, right? And so people lie to the researchers. So we don't really know.” ~Tammy Nelson, PhD To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page. — Where you look affects how you feel — This is a good way to understand brainspotting! When using brainspotting, a person can identify internal sensations or emotions by focusing on specific spots in their visual field, a targeted mindfulness that helps them identify tension in their bodies, and connect those sensations or emotions to a specific spot in their visual field. Through brainspotting, new neural pathways are created over time, so the spot triggering these feelings no longer triggers these feelings. The brainspotting method enables the body to utilize its natural healing mechanisms by enabling it to 'self-scan' itself in order to access areas of the brain where trauma is stored. This type of process can alleviate symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and physical pain. Brainspotting can also benefit anyone with feelings that might be holding them back in their career, artists and creatives and athletes. Valeria interviews Mariya Javed-Payne — She is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Certified Brainspotting Trainer and Consultant, and a Minnesota Board Approved Supervisor.  She is currently the owner of Awaken Consulting Services, a private practice where she offers therapy intensives as well as trainings and consultation. She has a history of serving as Co-Owner and Chief Clinical Officer at the Institute for Integrative Therapies, a psychedelic assisted therapy clinic, as well as the Director of Behavioral Health at a federally qualified health center and has led teams of therapists, psychiatrists, and social workers to provide trauma-responsive, anti-oppressive counseling and addiction therapies for the last 6 years. She also offers therapy intensives for complex PTSD and addictions, as well as consulting services on the topics of race, addictions, and trauma at Awaken Consulting Services. Most recently, she has begun utilizing psychedelic medicines such as ketamine to help people heal from trauma and other mental health concerns. We talk about the mindset that's required to prevent or recover from infidelity and why it can be an opportunity. We discuss several myths about infidelity, sex, and eroticism: "Women actually do cheat for sex. Men tend to cheat for emotional reasons." - Do all affairs happen because of sexual problems? - Does communication and empathy have the power to fix sexual frustration? - Why does emotional closeness sometimes seem to kill erotic passion? - And perhaps the million dollar question: Why does Oprah call it her "vajayjay?" Luckily, we come out on the other side of the discussion with some silver linings as well.  Come along with us to learn:  ·   how the loss of routine can create high-level anxiety ·   why Casey says to reframe how we ‘make changes in life' ·   what self-care looks like, what it's NOT, and why it's important ·   why Candace “hits the deck” and practices it regularly  Here's a look at the episode:  [1:30] Name “the thing” that's been there since the pandemic started. [2:08] What is the name? [2:44] The statistics on depression and anxiety are alarming. [3:55] Solid reasons for the recent changes in anxiety and depression.  [5:10] So, how do we cope with all of this? [5:58] One of those “easier said than done” that slaps us across the face like the tortillachallenge. Jump to this point to hear Casey share one of the most important strategies for managing stress. [8:12] That was a lot of heavy…is there a silver lining? [10:20] THIS IS WHERE $H!T GETS REAL![11:11] Annnnd we're back! Let's get back into it and reassess the damage.[13:01] Residual stress does exist and may change our baseline. [14:31] Need another positive blip? Here it is…almost in the form of a mantra. [16:55] Thinking of this in terms of finances, are there new opportunities in this new world?[17:18] Self-care is crucial – especially now. What does that look like?            [19:18] What are some things you do for self-care? Jackie and Candace both subscribe to simply laying on the floor.          [21:03] Self-Care is not a one-time thing. Keep it front of mind. Please rate and review the show. - And perhaps the million dollar question: Why does Oprah call it her "vajayjay?" Natasha Helfer Parker interviews Dr. Tammy Nelson, author of The New Monogamy: Redefining Your Relationship After Infidelity, regarding the complicated issues and tasks associated with recovering from infidelity. So many applicable things are discussed, whether you have experienced infidelity in your relationship or not. How do we define infidelity in the first place? How does having dialogue about what monogamy means help prevent infidelity? What can one expect to experience when they have found out their partner has been unfaithful? What are some ways to categorize the different stages of crisis and healing a couple might go through as they deal with betrayal? How do we negotiate our sexual relationships in regards to what some would consider benign behaviors like being attracted to other people, masturbation, and flirtation all the way to deciding to open one’s marriage to the sexual or romantic involvement of other people? When does infidelity point towards the end of a relationship? How do we find meaning in betrayals – as far as what they tell us about our relationships and our roles in them? What’s the difference between forgiveness and empathy – and what roles do these play? A wonderful overview of the many complexities and possibilities couples are facing as they decide how to move forward after a significant betrayal. Tammy Nelson, PhD is a licensed psychotherapist in private practice, a relationship expert and international speaker, an author, a faculty member and teacher for over 25 years. She holds a Doctorate in Philosophy in Clinical Sexology, is a Board Certified Sexologist, a Diplomat of the American Board of Sexologists, a Licensed Professional Counselor, an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, a Registered Art Therapist, a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, a Certified Imago Relationship therapist and an Advanced Imago Clinician. Whether you're suffering from a form of addiction, know someone who is, or just want to live a more meaningful and purposeful life, the tools Brian gives listeners will help anyone take charge of their lives and live with a purpose. Brian Howard MA, LADC-MH is a Licensed Alcohol, Drug, and Mental Health Counselor specializing in diagnosing and treating people afflicted with addiction, alcoholism, mental health disorders, as well as treating family members of those impacted by addiction. Brian is in private practice in Edmond, Oklahoma where he founded and operates OneLife Treatment. OneLife Treatment is a 3-6 month treatment program specifically designed for those that are unable to go to inpatient treatment for addiction but may need more intense treatment than what is provided in traditional outpatient counseling. The OneLife Treatment app was recently launched as a way to assist clients in their treatment while they are away from the treatment setting. In addition to clinical and professional experience, Brian also understands the impact of addiction on a personal level. Being in recovery himself allows him to connect with clients in unique ways. As he says, “Been there, done that, got the t-shirt”. Brian has been married for 16 years to Robin Howard and has two children, Dylan and Jaxton.
