An episode that defies the norms. Here's what's in store for today's episode: * Today, hosts Matt and Angela explore the intriguing and often debated world of Pathological Demand Avoidance with special guest Richard Woods.* Pathological Demand Avoidance, also known in more affirming circles as Persistent Drive for Autonomy, describes a strong need to question and resist demands, often co-occurring with autism. This trait can manifest as an intense drive for control, leading individuals to navigate the world in ways that prioritize autonomy and flexibility over compliance.* Most of what we know about PDA autism—and the stereotypes surrounding it—are heavily focused on children. In reality, PDA exists on a spectrum, and many adults also experience its traits, often in ways that go unrecognized or misunderstood.* Many neurotypicals see PDA as indistinguishable from Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), when in reality, PDA is often the underlying factor in these cases, driven by a need for autonomy rather than intentional defiance.* We explore the validity of Theory of Mind in relation to PDA and the problems with pathologizing demand avoidance.* Our hosts and special guest discuss the misconception that PDA traits fade with age—when in reality, PDA individuals learn to accommodate themselves and establish clear boundaries as they grow into adulthood.* We explore the overlap between PDA and ODD, and why Richard believes that PDA isn't a form of autism, but rather a distinct profile of neurodivergence.* Additionally, we discuss how neurotypicals often struggle to differentiate CPTSD symptoms from autism, as many have never encountered a healthy, healed autistic person.* The discussion then shifts to how the world is not designed for autistic or disabled people in general, and how this lack of accessibility and understanding can exacerbate PDA traits, making self-advocacy and autonomy even more crucial.* We talk about labels, how they affect our ability to get our needs met, and what Richard's "post-autistic identity" entails in the broader conversation around neurodivergence and self-definition.* Finally, we reflect on the importance of self-advocacy, community, and embracing neurodivergence beyond medical labels, as well as the role of monotropic focus in the autistic experience.“May your stimming activities be many, and your flow states long.” About Richard Woods:Richard Woods is the leading Demand Avoidance Phenomena (Pathological Demand Avoidance) authority (by academic work and experience) and Author. He is attributed as autistic, but has a "post-autistic identity" as he is no longer basing his identity on psychiatric categories.“I tend to view PDA as literally about the management of stress. A lot of people express these features because they are distressed and or stressed by the demands being placed upon them. And often with autistic people, it seems to be more of a cognitive style. We're to be stressed when you put us in a very chaotic, very high-demanding world.” - Richard Woods“The modern life isn't built for autistics. It's so much noise, so much sound, so much that is visual and tactile. It's not built for disabled people in general.” - Richard Woods “That's the thing [about autistic kids] - when we have a safe person, when we have that anchor person, it frees us to be more objective, or to object rather, because it's safer to object. As opposed to a total stranger, you may not feel safe saying, ‘no, I don't want to do that. But with someone you trust, you say, ‘no, there's no way I'm going in there. You can't make me do that.' That's not going to happen, because you know you're not going to be met with that judgment and the criticism that comes along with that of a stranger.” - Matt In this episode, we take a deep dive into the world of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) autism, a lesser-known but important part of the spectrum. From the intense need for autonomy to the challenges of navigating a demand-heavy world, we explore what PDA really is—and what it isn't. Join Matt and Angela as they break down common misconceptions, discuss how PDA presents in adults, and chat with expert Richard Woods about the affirming perspective of Persistent Drive for Autonomy. Have you experienced PDA traits in yourself or others? Share your thoughts with us using #AutisticCultureCatch on social media!Show Notes:There is substantial debate over what PDA is. Presently my view PDA is not an "autism profile"/ autism subgroup/ autism subtype, or anything of the kind. Will the role of TikTok in the Romanian presidential elections prove a test for Brussels' enforcement of social media? The video playing app played a significant role in the rise of Calin Georgescu, a previously little-known candidate who won the first round of Romania's national elections. However, TikTok refutes its impact on the poll, citing its strict guidelines banning political ads and combating covert influence operations. The platform is also bound to follow transparency rules under the Digital Services Act (DSA), which entered into force in 2023.Today Radio Schuman dives into the topic with Richard Woods, International Policy Director at the Global Disinformation Index. On the second segment of the podcast, we take a look at significant parliamentary committee meetings and recommendations by EU health ministers. In the last part of the show, Radio Schuman looks at the 2024 Oxford Word of the year - spoiler alert: it involves social media platforms.Radio Schuman is hosted and produced by Maïa de la Baume, with journalist and production assistant Eleonora Vasques, audio editing by David Brodheim and Georgios Leivaditis. This week - and for the foreseeable future anyway - residential real estate agents & REALTORS will be altering the way they do business. CNBC's Diana Click explained why earlier this year, and a Chicago TV sit-down with a closing attorney and broker/agent sort of gives you a proper sense where (and why) the industry's changing. Did I mention I'm a residential REALTOR? Well I am, and I'm only too eager to share my audible eye-rolling over all of this. Then, the opinions abound in the aftermath of Georgia school superintendent Richard Woods' stumbling, fumbling and bumbling through defunding AP African American studies before being called out by those in his own party and eventually set straight by Attorney General Chris Carr. Well, Woods relented, but in the aftermath of that, the AJC offered up opinions from a former Jasper County Republican leader who opines "Racism is not dead," Maureen Downey weighing in on how the same party's 'divisive concepts' law is at the heart of the attempt to defund the curriculum, and historian Clennon L. King on black society's role in teaching their history to their children. I don't disagree, but I also do, sort of.
Scot and Buzz chat about the continuing fallout after Trump's disastrous Atlanta rally. Is Georgia in play? Will this impact down ballot races? And why is Richard Woods a clown?
School superintendent Richard Woods has reversed his initial decision to deny state funding for a new Advanced Placement African American history curriculum. On today's episode of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Politically Georgia podcast, state Senator Nikki Merritt joins the AJC's Patricia Murphy, Greg Bluestein and Bill Nigut to discuss the decision to move forward with funding for the program in Georgia's public schools. But first, Stephen Lawson, a former top aide to Republican Speaker of the Georgia House Jon Burns joins the podcast to talk about the damage Donald Trump's attacks on Governor Brian Kemp may do to party unity and Trump's efforts to win Georgia. Plus, there are indications from election projection experts and a new private poll that Kamala Harris is turning the tide in Georgia's presidential race. The state is now rated a tossup by Larry Sabato's Crystal Ball and the Cook Report. Vice President Kamala Harris holds her first rally with her new running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. On today's episode of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Politically Georgia podcast, hosts Bill Nigut and Tia Mitchell talk with Democratic DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond about the roll out of the Kamala Harris/Tim Walz ticket at a rally in Philadelphia. Thurmond weighs in, too, on the decision by state school superintendent Richard Woods to reject certifying the new African American studies Advanced Placement curriculum for Georgia schools. Kinda ... "curious" ... that Georgia's school superintendent Richard Woods took more than a week to reveal why he pulled state funding for AP African Americans studies. Turns out its the state's two-year old "divisive concepts" law. What's funny about that is governor Brian Kemp - who signed the law - wasn't aware that was Woods' rationale. We know that because, remember, Kemp made a big public spectacle by sending a letter asking for Woods' reasoning. Gwinnett County Schools - the state's largest - is already abandoning AP African American studies curriculum. The root of the problem? Questioning 'intersectionality' - which, like "critical race theory" - is a relatively new term and one hastily demonized by conservatives eager to see to it future generations of Americans are less and less aware of the nation's awful history on race, racism and bias.
Former President Donald Trump holds his first joint rally in Atlanta Saturday with his newly christened running mate U.S. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio. On today's episode of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Politically Georgia podcast, host Bill Nigut and former AJC politics columnist Jim Galloway look ahead to the rally being held at the same location as Vice President Kamala Harris' rally this past week. AP national politics reporter Meg Kinnard joins to look at why Democrats have embraced so quickly the description of Donald Trump and JD Vance as “weird.” But first, the podcast explores the ongoing controversy over Georgia school superintendent Richard Woods' refusal to certify the new African American studies Advanced Placement curriculum. Woods' claims that portions of the course violate the state's “divisive concepts” law. Send us a Text Message. For nearly a decade, Richard Woods has served as State School Superintendent here in Georgia. He has over 30 years of experience in public education, from Pre-K through 12th-grade. He was a high school teacher for 14 years, serving as department chair and teacher mentor….he has also served in administrative roles like principal, assistant principal, Pre-K director, and alternative school director. Earlier this week, Georgia's state schools superintendent Richard Woods put his foot in his mouth when he announced the state would no longer be funding AP African American Studies. Folks were outraged. Folks (the Republican governor included) wanted to know why he made that decision. Well, he reversed course (somewhat) but activists were still outraged, so I reached out to Atlanta-based public education policy advocate Mikayla Arciaga so she could explain why Woods' about-face isn't good enough. Donald Trump's gone from "anytime, anywhere" to "not gonna debate her" using "we can't even be sure she's the nominee" as their excuse. And it definitely is that - an excuse. One that makes no sense to use to back out of a date in mid-September and well after the DNC convention when whomever the nominee is will be known by then. Meanwhile, former Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan - a Republican - again considered who he'd choose between Donald Trump and whomever else was on the ballot and went away from his party to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris. Hear why.
Georgia state superintendent Richard Woods back-tracked his decision not to recommend the Advanced Placement course in African American Studies for State approval; Atlanta home values have climbed. But according to a new study, homeowners here are still paying a smaller share of taxes than in most other cities; On this week's edition of "Plugged In: A WABE Politics Podcast," Rahul Bali and Matthew Pearson gauge political reaction in Georgia to the change at the top of the Democratic ticket. In this episode, Ceri is joined by Paul Hedge, the founder and owner of Hales Gallery, which was established in 1992 in a Deptford café. Paul shares his inspiring journey from a working-class background to becoming an established figure in the art scene. With passion and dedication, he has been a pioneer of inclusivity since long before the term became widely used. Paul discusses the artists who have had the most significant impact on him throughout his career and challenges the perceptions many people have about art galleries and artist representation. He also shares the unique ways he built his profile as an art dealer and how he found success by simply being himself through the power of traditional networking and never letting a lack of knowledge hold him back! KEY TAKEAWAYS Paul grew up in a council house in Stevenage, and his parents moved there from East London after the war. As a child, Paul noticed paintings in his grandparents' house and began questioning them at a young age. He also developed an interest in art books in his school library. In the 60s and 70s, career advice was centred around following in one's father's footsteps, and art was rarely discussed as a career option. Paul attended Goldsmiths Art College, where he was tutored by renowned artists such as John Bellamy, Richard Wentworth, and feminist artist Mary Kelly. It was during this time that he started his first gallery. Exhibitions appealed to Paul as they allowed him to showcase other people's work and share his thoughts, opinions, and art knowledge with others. Before finding success in the art world, Paul worked as a postman, delivering mail to notable figures like Michael Caine and Harold Wilson. This experience allowed him to visit commercial art galleries in London and ask questions to artists and owners. Paul and his business partner set up a café to help fund the gallery, enabling them to make a living while creating a space for art. The café's success allowed them to run a programme and eventually establish the gallery in its own right. The gallery's foundation was built on giving artists a voice and listening to their ideas, including those of women, which was not as common in the 90s. One of their early successes was Japanese artist Tomoko Takahashi. For Paul, style was never a driving factor; instead, race, gender, and class have always been at the forefront of the gallery's mission. Paul has consistently utilised his enthusiasm and creativity to find ways to get things done and succeed, even when faced with challenges or a lack of knowledge in certain areas. BEST MOMENTS "Everything you thought was changed, everything you believed was changed” “When I think about our shows, they were quite out there” “Wow a curtain pole from Harold Wilson, you're not going to say no” “I've never been short of ambition” “We managed to get some money from the Tories, they gave us some money because we were enterprising” “Parallel to the café being a success, the gallery also became quite successful quite quickly” “Richard Woods, we did an early show with him” “I think punk and growing up in an environment where anything could happen made me think in a particular way” “The odder the better that's my cup of tea” “People's worst nightmare is a working-class bloke with money” “You didn't let the fact that you didn't know stand in the way of your figuring some way” PODCAST HOST BIO Meet Ceri Hand, the driving force behind countless creative success stories. Just click the link below. https://www.buymeacoffee.com/AudreyBK_________________________________________________Superintendent Woods sent the following. Here is what we sent to the Gwinnett School System:March 14, 2023Superintendent Dr. Calvin Watts and Members of the Gwinnett County Board of Education:Recently, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) announced that the district was exploring the option of adopting a new health education curriculum, including an embedded new sex education program. In district communications with the public, it was stated that this move was designed to better align with the new Health Education standards adopted by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE). This public statement coupled with concerns expressed to me by local citizens encouraged the engagement of my office in this process.I greatly appreciate the willingness of your school district to provide GaDOE with both your current sex education program and the proposed curriculum. Upon review, the following has been determined:1. A comprehensive crosswalk has not been provided for all lessons/topics in the proposed curriculum aligned with the state-approved standards. Upon an initial review, there is content in the proposed curriculum that is not included in our state standards.2. The proposed curriculum expands instruction within grades K-5. State law only requires age-appropriate sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention in these grades. The proposed curriculum seems to go above this requirement, and it appears local public feedback does not support expansion into this grade band.3. The proposed curriculum does contain content specifically labeled to CASEL standards, which are not recognized or adopted by the Georgia Department of Education or State Board of Education and are not part of the state- approved standards for health education in Georgia.4. Regarding the instruction of sex education, Gwinnett's current curriculum presents itself to be better aligned with the emphasis on abstinence in accordance with state standards and law, as well as State Board of Education board rule.I understand that the Gwinnett County Board of Education is scheduled to discuss the proposed adoption at its board meeting on Thursday. I respectfully request that the board delay adoption to give the district time to ensure compliance in the proposed curriculum with state law, standards, and board rule.I share your commitment to the health and wellness of our children. In that pursuit, it is essential that state standards and guidelines are adhered to and that public institutions are responsive to public feedback and input they receive. Overwhelming local input supports my call to pause and re-evaluate adoption. Simply stating “parents can always opt out” needlessly puts Gwinnett families and parents in a zero-sum situation.I appreciate your attention to this matter and your support for the children and families of Gwinnett County. Respectfully,Richard Woods, State School Superintendent

Episode 59 is the final part of our trilogy of info-dashes through the first British Broadcasting Century. Here we span 1988-2022: the digital years. Enjoy hearing from experts, those who were there and contributions from you marvellous podcast listeners. (Part 1 was more archive-heavy - but rights issues get trickier as we get more recent - oh and do go back and listen to part 1 (1922-54) and part 2 (1955-87)). Some excerpts are from longer interviews that you'll hear on the podcast soon (eg. ex Radio 1 boss Johnny Beerling, sitcom star Jeffrey Holland). Some are from previous episodes (go back and hear Lee Mack or Chris Jarvis). Some have been specially sent in for this episode (thanks Jon Dear, Alan Stafford, Dr Andrea Smith). And some are on loan from my other podcast, A Paul Kerensa Podcast - formerly known as The Heptagon Club (eg. Tim Vine, Miranda Hart). Today on the podcast, Suzanne speaks with Richard Woods, former finalist on the hit TV series The Apprentice and founder of the Million Dollar Sprint, a growth accelerator for expert businesses. Richard talks about his experience of pursuing debts in the small claims court and why he would always recommend avoiding that process at all costs by having watertight contracts in place that get you paid in full and on time, especially pertinent at the moment in these uncertain times. If you're currently having problems getting your invoices paid, or if you're considering that you might take somebody to the small claims court, then this is an episode to listen to. Of course, no episode would be complete without talking about the worst-case scenario that could happen in Richards' business which he considers to be non-payers. Suzanne also gives her opinion on what could be Richard's worst-case scenario, which is what would happen if something happened to Richard being the face and the main trainer of the accelerator that he's running. So, if you're also the face of your business and providing most of the delivery, this episode will prove insightful and thought provoking. Richard also shares some behind the scenes stories about what it's really like to be on The Apprentice, facing Alan Sugar across the boardroom table doing your utmost to dodge those immortal words “You're fired!”… In this episode: [4:43] Suzanne asks Richard about his experience in starting a business directly out of university on a graduate loan and what it was like building an import business in his early 20's. [8:40] Richard shares his experience of the small claims court, and why having a well thought out and properly worded contract can save a lot of time, money, and avoid court altogether. [18:33] Richard shares his takeaways from having clients avoid payment, and what his contracts have in place to avoid that in the future. [23:43] Suzanne spells out the worst that could happen in the Million Dollar Sprint if Richard fell ill and could no longer deliver on a commitment. She also shares how to fortify yourself against any similar situation in your own business. [34:01] Richard talks about what it was like to be on The Apprentice, and shares some behind the scenes information about sets, scheduling, and how not to stand out at the interviews. To make sure you have all YOUR business legal protections in place easily and affordably – including watertight contracts as Richard recommends – then join Suzanne's Savvy Shay Business Club TODAY for just £47 (plus vat) per month instead of £97 (plus vat). A SAVING OF £50 per month and peace of mind that you won't need to head to the small claims court! Click here for more information.
