In today's world, your smartphone can be your most powerful travel tool — if you have the right apps loaded up. Travel advisors Ryan and Julie of Wander and Beyond Travel break down their go-to apps for every stage of your trip, from the planning phase all the way to clearing customs on your way home.Destination-Specific Apps Start with the app for wherever you're going. Disney's My Disney Experience app is a must-download the moment you book — use it to explore menus, check wait times, and link your reservation. Cruise lines (Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Princess, and others) each have their own apps, and all-inclusive resorts often have one too. Download them before you leave home and take time to explore them ahead of your trip.Airline Apps Download your airline's app, set up notifications, and always screenshot your boarding pass so you have it offline. And yes — printing a paper boarding pass is still a smart backup move.FlightAware Julie tracks every client's flights through FlightAware, which sends real-time alerts for delays, gate changes, and cancellations. She recommends clients download it too for peace of mind.Rideshare & Transit Apps In the US, grab both Uber and Lyft. Traveling internationally? Look into region-specific apps like FreeNow or Bolt, and don't forget local transit apps for subway or bus systems.WhatsApp Outside the US, WhatsApp is how the world communicates. Tour operators, resort concierges, and transfer companies often use it exclusively. Set it up before you go.Cruise Legend A newer favorite for cruisers who like to explore independently. See which ships are in port on your sailing day and find out what's within walking distance of the dock.Mobile Passport Control For US citizens re-entering the country, this app lets you submit passport and customs info digitally, helping your group move through the line faster.Pro Tip from Ryan: Move all your travel apps to your phone's front screen before a trip so everything is easy to find on the go.Where in the World? Julie's neighbors are currently on a nine-night Disney Dream cruise through Greece, Croatia, and Malta — their kids' first trip to Europe!Next week: specialty river cruises.Wander and Beyond Travel → wonderandbeyondtravel.comSupport the showLove the podcast? Poet Delthea Simmons had a license, a car on its last legs, and a hometown she loved. What she didn't have was reliable transportation—so she organized her shopping, her work, and eventually her exit from Wilmington around rideshare apps. In this episode, Shoresides asks whether her story is part of a pattern. Lyft driver Jayce Esterline estimates that 60% of pickups on Wilmington's Northside are people getting to doctor's appointments, work, and groceries. And ride data pulled by Lyft's Sarah Conlisk, reviewed with Anna Casey of Cape Fear Collective, shows riders in Wilmington's lowest life-expectancy neighborhoods using the apps as basic transportation infrastructure—while riders in the highest use them to get to the airport.Lyft provided ride data for this story; Uber did not respond to our inquiries.CreditsProduced by Rend Smith, Aaleah McConnell and Nick Magrino. Gil West, CEO of Hertz, joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss the launch of Oro Mobility and how a century of fleet operations is helping robotaxis to scale.A robotaxi parked is a depreciating asset, and the attention goes to the driving while the margin hides everywhere else. Cleaning, charging, maintaining, and positioning the vehicle is the part nobody wants and the part that decides the economics.Oro Mobility was built to own that work. It is an asset-heavy operating company sitting on Hertz infrastructure, 2,700 chargers, more than 11,000 service locations, and a footprint across roughly 160 countries. Oro owns and operates fleets, human-driven and autonomous, and supplies them turnkey to B2B partners including Uber and Nuro in a manner that Gil frames as the connective tissue between the demand aggregators, the technology companies, and the OEMs, the supply layer for the future of mobility. That positioning reshapes how the autonomy economy scales. A robotaxi company no longer has to build depots, charging, and a service network from scratch, something Mr. West says could take decades and billions of dollars to replicate.Over time, Hertz plans to hold robotaxis on its balance sheet as both owner and operator, sweat each asset through the peaks, service it through the valleys, and run the same footprint across rideshare, delivery, and autonomy.Episode Chapters00:00 Hertz's Turnaround1:18 Oro Mobility4:43 Hertz's Infrastructure Advantage13:29 Robotaxi Technicians15:36 Robotaxis and Rideshare are Complementary19:27 Infrastructure Permitting22:26 Peaks and Valleys of Assets Ownership25:47 Inspiration for Oro Mobility28:28 Hertz as a Platform Business30:28 Managing the Turnaround34:21 Defining Success for Oro Mobility35:22 Hertz Over the Next Century37:03 AUTNMY AI--------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy is the leading applied intelligence platform covering the convergence of automation, autonomy, and the Autonomy Economy.™.Through our podcasts, newsletter, and proprietary applied intelligence, we set the narrative for institutional investors, industry executives, and policymakers navigating the convergence of automation, autonomy, and economic growth.Join institutional investors and industry leaders who read This Week in The Autonomy Economy every Sunday. President of the Illinois Drivers Alliance Genie Kastrup joins Lisa Dent to talk about the 500+ drivers rallying at the Illinois State Capitol Tuesday morning to demand the passage of the Rideshare Drivers' Union Bill.
Dan Buck, Kim St. Onge, and Ethan Bright are joined by Ross Marchand, executive director of the Taxpayer Protection Alliance, for a deep dive into rising auto insurance premiums and the role of litigation tied to ride-sharing services. The discussion centers on what Marchand describes as a “tort tax,” where attorneys pursue lawsuits against companies like Uber and Lyft even when individual drivers are at fault, driving up settlement costs that are ultimately passed on to consumers through higher insurance and ride-share prices. Marchand explains that lawmakers are now considering extending liability protections—similar to those granted to rental car companies under the Graves Amendment—to ride-share platforms, with the goal of reducing litigation-driven costs. The conversation highlights how legal strategies target corporations with deeper pockets, leading to higher premiums for everyday drivers and families, with Missouri cited as a state seeing thousands of dollars in added annual insurance costs per household. The segment also touches on driverless vehicle policy challenges, including how autonomous fleets like Waymo complicate traditional liability frameworks, and briefly addresses uninsured motorists as another factor contributing to rising insurance expenses. Laura Miller, head of public policy and communications at Uber Canada, discusses the fragmented landscape of ride-sharing regulation across Canada, where neighboring municipalities can have completely different rules, and why that matters for both drivers trying to earn income on a flexible basis and residents trying to get to medical appointments or simply travel home safely. Laura walks us through the emerging provincial frameworks in Quebec, British Columbia, and Newfoundland that are expanding access to underserved communities, and explains why standardization doesn't have to mean centralization. This episode is presented in partnership with Uber. The Hub is Canada's fastest growing independent digital news outlet. In this episode of Complex Systems, Patrick McKenzie riffs on why public sector payroll modernization is even more likely to fail than the typical public software procurement project. He then goes into a wider discussion about payroll providers and their role as software, payment rails, and a sink for an enduring controversy in political economy. We want robust state capacity and hate income taxes. He breaks down the history of tax withholding as a state-deputized collection mechanism and explains how providers like ADP manage a lucrative "conveyor belt" of money to earn interest on the "float". Finally, he discusses how fintech innovations like Earned Wage Access (EWA) are providing a pro-social, daily-pay alternative to predatory payday loans.–Full transcript available here: https://www.complexsystemspodcast.com/public-payroll/–Presenting Sponsors: Mercury, Meter, & GranolaComplex Systems is presented by Mercury—radically better banking for founders. The Context of White Supremacy (C.O.W.S.) Radio Program hosts the weekly summit on Neutralizing Workplace Racism 03/26/26. It seems as if we are repeating the same events and behaviors since we just endured throngs of crowds jammed into airports and unpaid TSA workers forced to work a 2nd job in the autumn of 2025. Here we are again just 5 months later. Once again, large numbers of TSA employees report anxiety and fear about paying their bills.
