President of the Illinois Drivers Alliance Genie Kastrup joins Lisa Dent to talk about the 500+ drivers rallying at the Illinois State Capitol Tuesday morning to demand the passage of the Rideshare Drivers' Union Bill.
Dan Buck, Kim St. Onge, and Ethan Bright are joined by Ross Marchand, executive director of the Taxpayer Protection Alliance, for a deep dive into rising auto insurance premiums and the role of litigation tied to ride-sharing services. The discussion centers on what Marchand describes as a “tort tax,” where attorneys pursue lawsuits against companies like Uber and Lyft even when individual drivers are at fault, driving up settlement costs that are ultimately passed on to consumers through higher insurance and ride-share prices. Marchand explains that lawmakers are now considering extending liability protections—similar to those granted to rental car companies under the Graves Amendment—to ride-share platforms, with the goal of reducing litigation-driven costs. The conversation highlights how legal strategies target corporations with deeper pockets, leading to higher premiums for everyday drivers and families, with Missouri cited as a state seeing thousands of dollars in added annual insurance costs per household. The segment also touches on driverless vehicle policy challenges, including how autonomous fleets like Waymo complicate traditional liability frameworks, and briefly addresses uninsured motorists as another factor contributing to rising insurance expenses. Laura Miller, head of public policy and communications at Uber Canada, discusses the fragmented landscape of ride-sharing regulation across Canada, where neighboring municipalities can have completely different rules, and why that matters for both drivers trying to earn income on a flexible basis and residents trying to get to medical appointments or simply travel home safely. Laura walks us through the emerging provincial frameworks in Quebec, British Columbia, and Newfoundland that are expanding access to underserved communities, and explains why standardization doesn't have to mean centralization. This episode is presented in partnership with Uber. The Hub is Canada's fastest growing independent digital news outlet. In this episode of Complex Systems, Patrick McKenzie riffs on why public sector payroll modernization is even more likely to fail than the typical public software procurement project. He then goes into a wider discussion about payroll providers and their role as software, payment rails, and a sink for an enduring controversy in political economy. We want robust state capacity and hate income taxes. He breaks down the history of tax withholding as a state-deputized collection mechanism and explains how providers like ADP manage a lucrative "conveyor belt" of money to earn interest on the "float". Finally, he discusses how fintech innovations like Earned Wage Access (EWA) are providing a pro-social, daily-pay alternative to predatory payday loans.–Full transcript available here: https://www.complexsystemspodcast.com/public-payroll/–Presenting Sponsors: Mercury, Meter, & GranolaComplex Systems is presented by Mercury—radically better banking for founders. It seems as if we are repeating the same events and behaviors since we just endured throngs of crowds jammed into airports and unpaid TSA workers forced to work a 2nd job in the autumn of 2025. Here we are again just 5 months later. Once again, large numbers of TSA employees report anxiety and fear about paying their bills. The conflict in Iran has also disrupted petroleum access around the planet, and gasoline prices has subsequently spiked. Hi loves! Welcome in to another episode! We are behing this month due to some Family weddings and unexpected passing away of loved ones. Today we bring you a Trafficking Today: What Women Need to Know to Stay Safe Before we begin today's episode, we want to share a brief content note. This episode includes discussion of sex trafficking, kidnapping, and threats to women's safety. While we do not go into graphic detail, these topics may be activating or emotionally heavy for some listeners. We encourage you to listen in a way that feels safe for you. That may mean taking breaks, listening with someone you trust, or choosing to skip this episode entirely. Your well-being comes first. If at any point you feel overwhelmed, it's okay to pause or step away. This conversation is intended to inform, empower, and protect—not to create fear. Such a hard conversation that is all around the world today. We discuss what this looks like, why strangers are a real risk and how they approach and high risk locations Be aware of your surroundings, if your gut is screaming it isnt right...it isnt right. Speak loudly and protect yourself. We are taught, as women, to stay small, to smile and be "sweet" as Abbie says many times. This is not the time to be sweet, get away, listen to your gut and yell, scream and you do not owe anyone any explanation High-risk locations include: Parking garages and parking lots Gas stations Airports and transit hubs Hotels and motels Public bathrooms Elevators and stairwells Crowded events Rideshare pickup areas Risk increases when: It's dark or early morning You're alone You're distracted by your phone You're wearing headphones You're traveling You're visibly stressed or emotional or you have been drinking. Traffickers use date rape drugs that are odorless, colorless and tasteless. These cause memory loss, confusion and inabilityy to fight back, making it very easy for them to abduct you. We go further and talk about common red flags, tactics and so much more. Please listen in if you can and share it, talk about it, discuss it. We love you, please be safe! XOXOXOXO
Is Uber as safe as riders are led to believe? On this episode of The Tudor Dixon Podcast, Tudor Dixon sits down with Will Hild, Executive Director of Consumers’ Research, to examine alarming allegations surrounding sexual assaults linked to rideshare services—particularly Uber—and the company’s internal handling of complaints. The conversation breaks down a recent $8.5 million judgment against Uber, claims that assaults occur nearly every eight minutes, and reports suggesting drivers with multiple complaints were allowed to remain on the platform. Tudor and Will explore how corporate “wokeness,” DEI policies, and ESG priorities may be masking serious safety failures, while also discussing a California ballot initiative that could hold rideshare companies legally responsible for assaults committed during rides. They also dive into Silicon Valley’s “move fast and break things” mentality, consumer trust, corporate accountability, and why public pressure—from Bud Light to Target—still matters. This is a must-listen episode for parents, rideshare users, and anyone concerned about consumer protection, corporate governance, and real-world safety.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A federal jury in Phoenix ordered Uber to pay $8.5 million to passenger Jaylen Dean after she was raped by an Uber driver in November 2023. This landmark verdict represents the first time Uber has been found liable in a sexual assault case, potentially affecting over 3,000 pending lawsuits against the rideshare company. The jury rejected Uber's longstanding defense that drivers are independent contractors rather than employees, establishing crucial legal precedent for future cases.Court records reveal that between 2017 and 2022, Uber received reports of sexual assault or misconduct approximately every 8 minutes in the United States. That amounts to at least seven reports per hour, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These numbers are widely believed to be dramatically underreported due to shame, fear, and victims' belief that nothing will be done.Evidence presented during the trial showed that Uber's internal systems flagged Jaylen Dean's ride as high risk for a serious safety incident moments before pickup, yet the company chose not to warn her, with executives testifying it would have been "impractical" to do so. This revelation undermines Uber's public claims about prioritizing rider safety above all else. The case highlights systemic failures in rideshare safety protocols and raises questions about liability when companies classify workers as independent contractors while simultaneously monitoring risk levels. Uber spokesperson Matt Colin stated the verdict "affirms that Uber acted responsibly" while simultaneously announcing plans to appeal. The plaintiff's attorneys had requested $144 million in damages. Uber maintains that 99.9% of rides occur without incident, though critics argue this statistic minimizes thousands of annual assault victims. The legal battle continues as rideshare companies face increasing scrutiny over sexual violence during rides. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1255: Waymo gains ground on rideshare rivals as Tesla undercuts them all. A global study shows bad CX drives customers away faster than high prices. And automakers pull back from Super Bowl ads, choosing more flexible, efficient buys.Only two automakers — Toyota and Cadillac — are confirmed for Super Bowl 2026, as most brands step away from the pricey event. Facing budget pressure and chasing efficiency, car companies are shifting spend to longer campaigns across other live events.Brands like Ford, BMW, Kia, Honda, Nissan, and Stellantis are sitting it out, citing affordability and better ROI elsewhere. With a $9 million price tag per 30 seconds plus production, the Super Bowl is losing appeal amid industry cost pressures.Automakers are turning to the Olympics, World Cup, and NBA All-Star Game for more cost-effective, multi-week campaigns.“There's no secret that the premium of being in the Super Bowl certainly would come at the expense of having some additional investment,” said Sean Gilpin, Hyundai CMO.Waymo is becoming a real contender in ride-hailing while Tesla goes for a classic price war play. A new Obi study compares autonomous and traditional services, showing a market reshaping rapidly — especially in San Francisco.Waymo's robotaxi pricing has dropped and is now only 12.7% more than Uber and 27.3% more than Lyft, compared to 30–40% higher in mid-2025.Tesla Robotaxi leads on price at just $8.17 per ride, but lags with 15.32-minute average wait times.Obi CEO Ashwini Anburajan: “They're using the playbook that Uber and Lyft used... and we know that playbook works."Consumers now prioritize customer experience over price with 59% abandoning a brand after one bad experience versus 55% fleeing due to price hikes, according to a global Havas CX study. Consistency and emotional connection are key drivers of loyalty.A global survey of 59,000+ shoppers shows experience matters more than cost — more consumers ditch brands after poor service than high prices.Consistent, seamless experiences across digital and physical channels top what customers value most.Emotional connection and personalization now weigh as heavily as functional efficiency in shaping CX.“Loyalty can only be earned by delivering unwavering consistency, authentic personal connection, and experiences that create lasting emotional memories,” says David Shulman. This episode of the Automotive State of the Union is brought to you by Amazon Autos: MeetJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

In Richmond, Kentucky, an Uber driver was recently arrested and charged with first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy after a passenger accused him of sexual assault. The victim claims to have gotten into the vehicle and fallen asleep before waking up in the suspect's parked vehicle in a secluded lot, not at her residence. Investigators used Uber GPS data and surveillance footage—which showed the vehicle stationary for roughly 25 minutes—to corroborate her account. --For early, ad free episodes and monthly exclusive bonus content, join our Patreon!
