Petr Bystron - Immigration, Sovereignty and the Future of EU: An AfD Perspective

Join us for another episode of Hearts of Oak Podcast, where we're honoured to have the return of Petr Bystron, a Member of the European Parliament representing the Alternative for Germany (AfD), as our guest.  In this insightful conversation, Petr delves into the transformative currents sweeping through European politics, sparked by the AfD's significant electoral achievements.  We'll explore how the AfD's strategic alliances are influencing European policy, the media's portrayal of populist movements, and the party's dedication to tackling critical issues like immigration and national sovereignty head-on. Petr provides a unique perspective on the shifting dynamics within the EU, where traditional political alignments are giving way to a resurgence of nationalist sentiments. Expect a candid discussion that goes beyond the headlines, examining the core values and political philosophies at play in today's Europe. Tune in as we navigate these complex waters with one of the key figures shaping the continent's future. Petr Bystron is the highest-ranking foreign politician of the AfD: He has been Chairman of the AfD in the Foreign Committee of the German Bundestag since 2017. Since 2021 he has been the foreign policy spokesman for his party and its representative in the Council of Europe and the Interparliamentary Union (IPU). He was the first AfD politician to be officially received by an incumbent president (Milos Zeman) and the first European to receive the „Eagle Award “ from the conservative US Phyllis Schlafly Foundation. He was born in the CSSR, from which he fled to Germany at the age of 16, where he received political asylum. Thirty years later, he faced similar persecution in Bavaria: during the 2017 election campaign, he was subjected to an illegal house search and it was announced that he was being monitored by the Bavarian secret service. In addition to these state reprisals, he is always the target of attacks by left-wing extremists. Bystron is actively committed to supporting politically persecuted people. In 2018, with the help of Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, he was able to free journalist Billy Six from Venezuelan detention. Petr Bystron is one of the founding members of the AfD. From 2015 to 2017 he was the state leader of the party in Bavaria. He took over the party in a crisis and led it from 3.5% of the vote to the best election result of all western federal states in the 2017 federal election with 12.7%. He founded and headed his party's National Committee for European and Foreign Policy (2013-2015). Bystron studied political science at the University of Politics and the Ludwig Maximillian University in Munich and has been working as a journalist for years. His articles on business and politics have been published in renowned daily newspapers and magazines in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. He has won several creative competitions, including an EU essay competition on the future of Europe. His current book 'MEGA – Make Europe Great Again' contains portraits of leading conservative politicians such as Viktor Orbán, Marine Le Penn and Nigel Farage. Petr is married, has two children and has lived in his constituency of Munich North for more than 30 years. He has been an entrepreneur for over thirty years. Connect with Petr and The AfD...

Send us a Text Message. On Friday, August 9th, Charles R. Cross passed away from natural causes. For those who knew Charley in the Pacific Northwest music community, the Springsteen community and in real life, it was a shock. Charley was only 67 years old and was in the middle of working on his 10th book. Back in October 2023 Charley sat down with us and discussed Tower, Seattle, Music and a ton of other subjects. I first met Charley in 1984, the old fashioned way...by writing him a letter. I had seen his fanzine "Backstreets Magazine" and was stunned at the quality of the publication. I was going into my Senior year of college and I sent along articles I had written. He encouraged me to contribute whatever I wanted. Surprisingly he began printing my articles and photographs. When I moved to Seattle in 1990 I knew two people; my boss Rob Bruce and Charley. Both showed me the lay of the land in Seattle. While I knew Charley as the Publisher and Editor of "Backstreets" what I quickly found out was the influence of his "day job" publisher and editor of "The Rocket" an incredible chronicle of the Northwest Music scene long before I got there and after I left. As Springsteen's popularity ebbed and Seattle's was on the rise, Charley had a front row seat and shared it with his readers. We're rerunning our Episode with Charles R. Cross today. Give it a listen.

Send us a Text Message. When Greg Wallis was hired at Tower Tacoma by Dave Coker, Greg had never heard of Tower Records. It was simply the big, new record store to move into his town. When Coker left to open and run the Seattle U District store, Rob Bruce came up from Anaheim CA to be General Manager. By this time, Greg was the buyer for all sections of music except for Classical Music. Soon after, Assistant Manger Bob Akin went to Sacramento to join the Advertising Department and Greg was promoted to Assistant Manager. Stints in Hawaii, the opening of the Boston store, working countless A-Teams until Clark Street Chicago opened and his promotion to Midwest/Southeast Regional Manager were all a part of Greg's Tower experiences. Greg touches on the excitement of the Blues scene in Chicago as well as the challenges of running a record store off the mainland where timely deliveries are essential to success. But something about his time in Boston made for some memorable stories. On this episode, Greg recounts the tales of Morris Levy, whom he and his crew dealt with around the opening and first year of operations in Boston. Also, if you've never heard the story of Greg's instore with Robyn Hitchcock and Hitchcock's ridiculous behavior beforehand, Greg recounts it from his perspective. The fact that Hitchcock continues to write about it on his Facebook page, decades later, proves Greg acted appropriately at such childish shenanigans. And….this is our 100th episode. Following our conversation with Greg Wallis, we take a moment to celebrate this occasion!

There's something incredibly humbling about standing at the foot of the world's tallest peak, feeling the bite of the cold Himalayan air and knowing you've walked the same path as legends. We felt that awe with Rob Bruce of Got to Get Out, who joined us to recount tales of guiding groups through the trials of Everest Base Camp during winter's sting. His stories aren't just about the physical endurance required to brave such extreme conditions, but also about the mental fortitude that comes from pushing past boundaries and emerging, transformed on the other side. This episode gives an insider's look into the life-altering effects these journeys have on those who dare, as well as the reverence for Sir Edmund Hillary's legacy. Rob tells us how he traded boardroom buzzers for the serene silence of snowy peaks, and how the Sherpa people's culture and heritage are as integral to the Everest experience as the climb itself.  We also discuss the importance of fostering a love for the outdoors in children and the role that modern technology plays in shaping—or inhibiting—the spirit of exploration. So join us for this soul-stirring conversation that celebrates the power of adventure to redefine our limits and the enduring call of the wild that beckons us.  https://www.facebook.com/gottogetout See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jim Barber had a 19-year career with Tower Records. Starting in 1987, Jim worked in the Classical Department in Washington DC with Rob Bruce as the store's General Manager. After only a year on the job, Tower decided to open a location in Tyson's Corner VA and Jim was one of three employees to transfer to help get the new suburban location and its first-time General Manager, George Scarlett, up and running. Jim remembers his interview for Tyson's Corner taking place outside the store, in the hallways of The Shops at 2000 Pennsylvania. After leaving the company briefly, Jim found his way back to Tower in Northeast Philadelphia, not far from where he grew up. Twelve years in Store #176 with its unusual layout, Jim ultimately became General Manager of the King of Prussia store from 2002-2004. His career with Tower concluded back where he spent most of his professional life, in North East Philadelphia until it closed in 2006. Jim had the distinction of being the only employee to be in the Northeast Philadelphia store the day it opened as well as its last day of business.  Through it all, Jim remembers his co-workers, Regional Managers, his living situation starting out at a “Tower house” in Washington DC, navigating a post-Tower Records world and lots of other details that made Tower a great place to work.

Brant Moles is one of those legends that have zero ego. While he's a quiet guy, he's not afraid to share what happened with his career…and in the first part of his career, he was a Wisconsin-based ski racer who went to an east coast academy with the goal of making the US Ski Team…but with all stories like Brant's, politics play a role. When that happens, it usually doesn't work out. The good thing is Brant Moles' career isn't remembered for racing; it's remembered for winning extreme contests, filming with the heavy hitters of his time, and helping lobby the industry to make fat skis. Brant Moles helped change the sport of skiing with product and how he used it in Alaska, and his story is one that should have been told long ago….but this is his first podcast. Hello once again everyone!! This is our FOURTH episode of the Thinking Outside the Long Box podcast, and probably the most special in all of them!! In this episode, as you can tell by the title, we have the absolute pleasure of interviewing ROB BRUCE from Comic Book Men!! He gives us insight on how he started collecting, what are some of the things that he has collected since then, and of course, his time on TV! Did you know that, not only does Rob appear in front of the camera sometimes on Comic Book Men, but he's also a producer behind the scenes? You'll hear him talk about that, and much much more!! As always, Gabe and Juan talk about their nerdy things as well! Like, who will die next in The Walking Dead. We go over a list of five people (some already dead in real time) who might be the next to get that zombie infection!! In his "old shit" segment, Gabe also tells us why he is so in love with Conan, and about his VAST collection of said title. In a correction from the last episode, Jon brings back his "old shit" segment, that was accidentally omitted last time. He tells us all about Ray Palmer, and his love for The Atom. Stay tuned for the next episode when we have a surprise guest recording in the Long Box Cavern with us!!! Remember, you can ALWAYS let us know what you think! We can only think of so many things to talk about every other week, and would LOVE to get some feedback and ideas from all of you out there who are listening!! Is a psychedelic community merely a state of mind? Can meaningful change be manifested in the material world by an activated collective? From Elesius to the Haight Asbury, illuminated communities have pointed the way, but what would a 21st century psychedelic community be like? How do emerging technologies and sustainability dovetail with a psychedelic future? What models for psychedelic community both living existing, past and potential (tribes, kibbutzes, communes etc) can we draw upon? What is the correct place for a workable entheogen at the core of the tribe? What went right and what went wrong in the 60s-70s back to the earth movement? Is a psychedelic sustainable community the much needed step forward? Join passionate plant heads sharing their experiences with psychoactive plants and their relationship to the Gaian matrix. Behind the chemistry are there active intelligences in the plant world, and if so how do we best interact with them? How can reclaiming our human-vegetal partnership help us become a sustainable culture? Why do we need to connect to the plant world? If plants can be teachers, can humans be students? What is our historical and bio-chemical relationship with plants? What does Nature have to teach us? What is the Australian plant kingdom’s place in the global entheo blossoming?
