Our very special guest Tenor Daniel Emmet | America's Got Talent - Marie Osmond Tour | Film Actor Stars know stars and they instinctively know when there's a new one in the making. That's why powerhouse tenor Daniel Emmet was showered with stardust during his appearances on NBC's hit series, “America's Got Talent (AGT).” I argue that he was only showered with the stardust that he kicked up in his jaw dropping, female swooning & faint-worthy performance. Judge Simon Cowell said his voice was so mighty, “the stage lit up in fire.” Judge Heidi Klum called Emmet “a great performer” with “the most beautiful voice.” Judge Mel B heaped praise on his “passion, delivery and pitch perfect voice” and said she “could listen to him all night.” Noting that Emmet's wide range of musical expression spans far across a spectrum of genres from pop to rock to opera, judge Howie Mandell said his performance “made me feel classier than I am. It was like seeing Pavarotti doing Aerosmith!” He's multi-lingual. He's multi-genre. He is a Las Vegas headline performer, a soloist with more than one prestigious orchestra. He is aguest star on numerous national TV shows. He's a recording artist. His latest single is the “The People,” with rapper Faded BreeZie, which debuted last Oct. 30. He has toured with singer Marie Osmond who described him as “a star on the rise with a once in a generation voice.” His first single, “Passerà,” debuted at #2 on the iTunes classical chart. He headlined his own show, “All That I Am,” for an exclusive run at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. He appeared on the first season of the CW network's hit summer series, “The Big Stage;” debuted his solo symphonic concert tour with the Irving TX orchestra near Dallas and performed the National Anthem for Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, Rock ‘N' Roll Marathon Series and the Top Rank Heavyweight Boxing Championship on ESPN+. He is an America's Got Talent Finalist He is our very special guest today, stardust and all, welcome Daniel Emmet! We started last week's show with the statement "if you are in your mid forties and think your best years are behind you, think again" as we introduced Matt Fitzgerald and his story of living out a dream to train and race with a professional running team to find every bit of potential he had in his 46 year old body. We start this weeks show with the statement "if you are in your mid sixties and think your best years are behind you, think again". At the age of 62 and at 335 pounds Sue Reynolds started a journey that started with a walk to a neighbors house and back. Step by step, goal by goal, she discovered running and then triathlon and completely transformed her body and life. At the age of 67 she has completed 5 seasons of triathlon and has been to 4 world championships. Also in today's show: What's new in the 303 Endurance News Video of the Week Announcements: Go to MileHighEndurancePodcast.com, click on the "subscribe" button, and you will get the newsletter with show notes and all the links and articles sent to you automatically every week. Sponsor UCAN: I've been talking the last couple of weeks about the "Keep Moving with UCAN" series on UCAN's Instagram Live. I told you that my 20 year old daughter and I have done the 20min HIIT sessions with American Ninja Warrior Chris Poirier Kim - total ass kicking. Last week they also had Hunter Allen leading a 30min "Pyramid of Power" cycling session, and a discussion with Greg McMillan about 5 tips to adapt your run training during this unique time. There are more UCAN Instagram Live streams so follow them @genUcan. Matt Bach from UCAN and Heidi Strickler had a webinar last night that was very educational. I highly recommend you check it out. It talks about the science, how to prepare, how to use for different distances. Heidi even says there's a great pancake recipe out there using UCAN. https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/recording/5174166886676091149   I'm working in the "man cave" on conference calls for hours at a time and need to keep up my energy and focus. Coffee gets old, I never drink soda, and won't drink a traditional sports drink unless training. One thing I love about UCAN is that unlike sugary sports nutrition, UCAN can be used outside of training too since the bars and powders provide healthy, steady energy with little to no sugar. I go to UCAN energy drink or a UCAN bar to keep my hunger satisfied and carry me through a daily marathon of meetings to keep me energized and productive. My favorite bar is the coffee flavor, but they have two new flavors - chocolate/almond butter and salted peanut butter which have been a hit.   Hey, since you are not racing, this is a great time to experiment with new nutrition in your training, something that is completely different than other sports nutrition out there. You needed to get in that ocean every day because the beach rules. You needed a bike. Because these were the zenith days of cycling. Let me count the ways.   USA Triathlon, IRONMAN U Collaborate on First-Ever Coaching Education Partnership USA Triathlon and IRONMAN U today announced a first-of-its-kind partnership that will enable multisport coaches in the USA Triathlon Coaching Certification Program to earn USA Triathlon Approved Continuing Education Units (CEUs) by completing the IRONMAN U online coach certification course. The USA Triathlon Coaching Certification Program was established in order to provide aspiring coaches with the tools to develop athletes effectively, help them set and reach their goals in multisport, and maintain safe environments for training and racing. The program also enables coaches nationwide to network and share best practices through in-person and online clinics and educational events. The USA Triathlon coach development pathway starts with an online learning course called Foundations of USA Triathlon Coaching, then progresses through increasingly advanced coach certifications to educate and support triathlon coaches of all levels.   Endurance News: Endurance Sports Coalition Unites 475 Organizations to Secure COVID-19 Relief With the immediate suspension of events across the nation due to social distancing and quarantine impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic, leaders across the endurance sports landscape formed the Endurance Sports Coalition to advocate for relief. The grassroots coalition creates one united voice for the endurance sports industry, which accounts for 50,000 events annually, 500,000 jobs, and provides health and fitness experiences to 30 million Americans. The coalition plans to educate Congress and the White House about the need for relief and support for operators of endurance sporting events and their supporting industries. Forged by USA Triathlon, Spartan, Tough Mudder, IRONMAN, Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, Running USA and USA Cycling, the coalition currently has more than 475 members across the triathlon, multisport, running, obstacle course and cycling event industries.   No pool? No problem. You can still keep your stroke sharp without access to the water Training for a triathlon during a global pandemic becomes an even taller task, especially for swimmers who don’t have access to their local pools with most gyms and public pools shut down due to shelter-in-place mandates around the country. Maurya Couvares, an assistant coach for the Wagner women’s triathlon team in Staten Island, New York, is one of many swimmers who has been forced to get creative in the comfort of her own home while Olympic-sized swimming pools are not an option. “Without a pool, swimmers can use stretch cords to continue working on swim-specific muscular endurance and fitness,” Couvares said. “Typically stretch cord workouts can be much shorter than a pool workout — anywhere from 5-25 minutes depending on fitness level and experience. Workouts can be structured as a short warm-up followed by a set of 'on' and 'off' intervals (for example, moving your arms as you would in freestyle swim for 30 seconds, taking 30 seconds off, then repeating 10 times). When using stretch cords it's important to remember the key technical part of each swim stroke. For freestyle, keeping a high elbow catch at the front of the stroke is important -- so make sure you do that while using stretch cords too.   Video of the Week: Ride Solo with the Colorado Classic 303 Garage Talk #2: Colin Laughery   Upcoming Interviews: Matt Miller from BASE Performance talking about a number of topics including the IRONMAN purchase, being a guide for blind athletes and the COVID-19 impact on the sports nutrition business.   Closing: Please support our sponsors. Earlier this week the Professional Triathletes Organisation announced its response to COVID-19 by increasing its Year-End Annual Bonus Programme from $2,000,000 to $2,500,000 and paying it all immediately based on the PTO World Rankings. The $500,000 increase would go to men and women athletes ranked 21-50, who will get an increase from $5,000 each in a year-end bonus to $8,000, and men and women athletes ranked 51-100, who previously would have been paid $2,000 each in a year-end bonus, but will now see that amount raised to $5,000. Athletes will be paid based on their PTO World Ranking as of January 1 or March 15, whichever is higher. We had a ton of questions about this. Are they really paying it out now? Based on pro rankings in March - 9 months early? Well guess who we got on the phone? If you’re an avid listener, you know I have a thing for running and triathlon, so it should come as no surprise that I went to the top of the top to get you the inside scoop on what’s happening in the world of endurance sports.  In the spirit of triathlon, this episode is one of a three part series, with three unique guests from The IRONMAN Group  on the history, growth, and future of the IRONMAN® Triathlon Series and triathlon, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series® and running and mass participation sports events around the globe.  We will also cover the philosophy and approach behind the cities where these races are held, how the events impact economic development and tourism, some additional industry insight, including Andrew Messick's thoughts on the Professional Triathlete Organisation (PTO) and of course, we do a deep dive into the coaching programs and certifications now offered by The IRONMAN Group and where that business is going in 2020. On this episode Marni sync's up with the President and CEO for The IRONMAN Group, Andrew Messick. Andrew shares the origins of IRONMAN and how a competition between friends in the Navy has inspired the evolution of the world’s largest mass participation endurance sports company, The IRONMAN Group.  Marni and Andrew talk about IRONMAN’s early roots and first races to its now 41st consecutive year of growth and the game changing acquisitions positioning The IRONMAN Group as the world’s largest mass participation sports company with triathlon, cycling, mountain biking and running. They sync up about IRONMAN’s digital expansion with their brand new website and new IRONMAN Training Companion App powered by PKRS as well as a successful content partnership with Facebook Watch. Andrew also shares his career trajectory from the NBA and AEG Worldwide to The IRONMAN Group and how the global experience positioned him for this role as CEO, and of course the training and races that fuel Andrew for success. As part of Wanda Sports Group, The IRONMAN Group is the largest operator of mass participation sports in the world and provides more than a million participants annually the benefits of endurance sports through the company’s vast offerings. Beginning as a single race, The IRONMAN Group has grown to become a global sensation with more than 235 events across 55+ countries. In addition to aforementioned races, The IRONMAN Group operates a global portfolio of events that also includes IRONKIDS®, ITU World Triathlon Series,  the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon™ and The Sun-Herald City2Surf® presented by Westpac, Ultra-Trail® World Tour events including Tarawera Ultra and Ultra-Trail Australia™, mountain bike races including the Absa Cape Epic®, road cycling events, and other multisport races. Born countries apart, and made in LA, the guys that make up the band Vintage Trouble are rock and roll incarnate. We were first introduced to Ty, Nalle, Richard, and Rick when they toured through a really cool and diverse Jazz Festival we have here in the Tampa/Clearwater area, which I realize is confusing considering they're an act with monster soul and blues swagger, and there aren't any jazz players in the group. Vocalist Ty Taylor is the poster child for the art of being a frontman. He's got a killer voice, he can jump about 7 feet in the air, and he makes it almost impossible not to get up and groove when they take the stage. And the band is stacked—as evidenced by the unplugged performance the whole group knocked out for us, and that you'll get to hear on the back half of this episode. I had come across these guys backstage at the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series, where they were polite, fun, and genuinely excited to be musicians—something you don't always see as clearly in bands of this level of fame and stature. From the fashion ads they appear in, to their newest music, Vintage Trouble is everything Rock 'n' Roll is supposed to be plus everything that it's missing. The band was in a bit of a rush to get to soundcheck, but they gave us a little over an hour to hang and record with them backstage. We hope––actually we know–– you will enjoy their interview and performances. It's some of the coolest, best sounding stuff we've captured yet.

Today we discuss bringing forth the courage and vulnerability to understand our strengths while transcending our fears, failures, and limitations.   Do you think that everybody possesses courage, or is it only in a few brave hearts? I've found that only those that can be vulnerable can express courage. Courage is not merely an act of will, it's a robust presence that dwells within all of us - it's a powerful force. In fact, it's a force that if applied in your life will take you to levels that you never even thought were possible. My first guest, Tracy Sundlun, is best known as one of the founders of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series in 1998. He joins me today to discuss the mindset and core traits that set Olympians apart from others, and how we can all reach our full potential and excel in life. My second guest, Rabbi Joshua Hammerman, is the spiritual leader of Temple Beth El in Stamford, CT. He joins me today to provide insight on how we can transcend our limitations, grow from failure, and have the courage to see ourselves objectively in order to be the best version of ourselves.   We Discuss: How being vulnerable and acknowledging our weaknesses brings forth our strengths Stepping into fearlessness and making the choice to step outside our comfort zones Overcoming fears and the limiting beliefs that hold us back from our full potential How the mindset of an Olympic athlete differs from the rest of the population Why passion, character, and the right environment are needed in order to excel How we can work towards becoming - and remaining - a mensch in today's world Transcending our limitations, growing from our failures, and improving ourselves   Visit:  VoicesofCourage.us

“I'm just excited about being a part of the sport—my love for running and the community continues to evolve. My boy, 4 years old, did the turkey trot yesterday and he loves to race. We go to the track at Point Loma Nazarene and [we're] raising that next generation of runners. There's a lot of up-and-coming athletes that I think are going to do some pretty incredible things and so again, I think it's on us, as the promoters of the sport, the media, journalists, the shoe companies, the industry people to all take a look in the mirror over the holidays here in 2018 and really decide, 'What do we want 2019 to look like and what do we want 2020 to look like?' We get to write our own history and change the game how we want it to be changed, so I think that cooperation and collaboration and storytelling is really what gets me excited about the future of running.” It was a lot of fun to sit down with my former colleague, Dan Cruz, for a freewheeling conversation that gets into the weeds of what's happening right now in different areas of the running world. Cruz is the former vice president of communications and public relations for the Competitor Group, where he worked from 2008 through the end of 2017. During that time, he focused a lot of his energy and attention on the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series, attending hundreds of events around the world, directing all external communications as well as social media strategy, and sharing stories from the front of the field and the back of the pack alike. We jumped all over the place over the course of this hour-long chat, talking about Cruz' career and how he got into the running industry despite having no prior experience in it—or even real interest in the sport—and the ways in which his passion for the sport grew and evolved over the course of 10 years, professionally as well as personally; the power of storytelling and why it's important for growing the sport's fanbase; the ever-changing landscape of the running media and where he sees it going; running culture, what that term means to him, and why it's important; why he thinks the sport needs more trash talking and rivalries to help make it more interesting to follow; and much, much more. Available On: iTunes  | Google Play  | Stitcher  | Spotify For Thad Beaty, musician-turned-triathlete, “Music That Moves” is the literal summation of his incredible journey thus far. A guitarist who has spent 9 years with country juggernaut Sugarland, he has shared stages with Lady Gaga, Bon Jovi, Kenny Chesney, Rhianna, and Beyoncé as well as contributing as a writer on albums selling upwards of 10 million copies. After his mother’s diagnosis with colon cancer and his own realization that the rock and roll lifestyle had resulted in his own poor health, he set out on a new journey to reclaim his health, the health of his family, and now, a quickly growing community of triathletes all over the world. Music That Moves was born out of Thad’s journey back to health in all areas of his life. Through the medium of a plant-based diet combined with a goal to compete in an IRONMAN, Thad found himself over 70 pounds lighter and surrounded by fellow athletes and musicians who wanted his help with their own journeys. Never one to do anything halfway, he dove in head first and pursued multiple coaching certifications (USA Triathlon Level 2, USAC Level 2, Training Peaks Level 2, USMS Level 2, Newton Running, Dynamic Movement Assessment,TRX, Spartan SGX, Triathlon Research, and Scheduled to sit for his Nutritionist certification and NSCA CSCS) to better coach the athletes he is leading. After discovering his passion to affect people’s lives for positive change, Thad was asked to be a celebrity mentor on ABC’s Extreme Makeover Weight-loss Edition, helping to coach and train a participant to complete the New Zealand Half-Ironman. From Andy: Thad is one of the most down-to-earth real rock stars that I've ever spoken with. His willingness to get real and raw and share some of the realities of his life made the conversation light, fun, entertaining, and enlightening. He's got a serious passion for helping others change their lives in a similar way to the way he's changed his.  You're going to LOVE this one! Enjoy! His experience includes everything from coaching (including at Georgetown, Colorado, USC, and over 100 athletes going to the Olympic Games); to sports administration, event creation (founder of the National Scholastic Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships), and athlete representation, sponsorship sales, and charity fundraising.   Tracy has been at the forefront of a number of the sports’ innovations and advances over the past 40 years, including the1974 effort  to introduce and involve chiropractic in track & field, in 1980 when he initiated the first test case with prize money and above-the-table appearance money in long distance running, and more recently in 2005, he created the first Wave Start plans for marathons and half marathons to better manage the density and comfort of runners on the course.   Tracy's actions, events, and programs have always epitomized his core belief that sport should positively impact all of society and look to include as opposed to exclude, involving all constituencies and athletes of all ages and abilities. His recent accolades include induction into the Running USA Hall of Champions and being named head manager of the United States Men’s Track & Field Team for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro Tracy now runs Everything Running, a small consulting company focused on “anything and everything track and field, running, and race walking." From Andy: It's rare these days that you get a chance to sit down and hear stories from a true legend, leader, and innovator in a modern sport. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to do just this with Tracy Sundlun. His stories are mesmerizing, as he takes me back to times in the running world when things that we take for granted today were totally non-existent.
