Rachel and Simon speak to the non-fiction author and novelist Anna Funder. After training as an international human-rights lawyer in Australia, Anna moved to Germany and published "Stasiland: Stories from Behind the Berlin Wall" in 2003; the book won the Samuel Johnson Prize (now known as the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction). Her debut novel, "All That I Am", followed in 2011. It fictionalised the true story of a group of friends who fled the Nazi regime for London in the early 1930s. The novel won the Miles Franklin Prize, Australia's most prestigious fiction award, and has been published in more than 25 languages. Her latest book, "Wifedom: Mrs Orwell's Invisible Life" (2023), is a biography of Eileen O'Shaughnessy, George Orwell's first wife, and combines original research with fictional reconstructions. It was longlisted for the inaugural Women's Prize for Non-Fiction. We spoke to Anna about moving from the law to writing, investigating the secret police of East Germany in "Stasiland", and "Wifedom". “Always Take Notes: Advice From Some Of The World's Greatest Writers” - a book drawing on our podcast interviews - is published by Ithaka Press. Anna Funder (international bestselling author of Wifedom) pens books about power. She is the author of the international bestsellers Stasiland, about the Stasi, which is being made into a TV series starring Elizabeth Debicki, and All That I Am, about the Nazis, which won the Miles Franklin Award. Her latest book, Wifedom: Mrs Orwell's Invisible Life, sees Anna take on the patriarchy. She exposes how literary giant George Orwell wrote his wife Eileen O'Shaughnessy “out of existence”, despite (and possibly because of) her pivotal role in his work.Anna and I talk through Orwell's misogyny and his own “doublethink” (believing two contradictory ideas while blanking out awareness of the contradiction), plus how doublethink works to keep patriarchy going. We dig into the delicate issue of the cancellation of these kinds of figures (we both agree they shouldn't be), the passive voice technique, why women must “claim their pronouns”, the power structure difference between France and Australia and how women write books.SHOW NOTESGet your copy of Wifedom hereYou can read more about Anna here and follow her work on InstagramThis episode of Wild was recorded at Work Club, my workspace while I was in Sydney--If you need to know a bit more about me… head to my "about" pageFor more such conversations subscribe to my Substack newsletter, it's where I interact the most!Get your copy of my book, This One Wild and Precious LifeLet's connect on Instagram and WeAre8 Hosted on Acast. Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and music producer Buck Johnson is the keyboardist and backing vocalist for the legendary rock band Aerosmith, the Hollywood Vampires (Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, and Joe Perry), and The Joe Perry Project. Buck hails from the backroads of Shady Grove, Alabama, just outside Birmingham, where he grew up singing gospel throughout the South with his musical family. Since beginning his career, the soulful rock artist has amplified his musical talent by performing in churches, bars, festivals, and concert halls globally alongside icons Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Johnny Depp, and Alice Cooper. As a songwriter, Buck co-wrote the international hit single for Carlos Santana, “Just Feel Better,” for his 2005 album All That I Am, featuring Steven Tyler. After moving to Nashville in 2006, Buck joined the country rock band Whiskey Falls, releasing their self-titled album in 2007 and earning two Country Top 40 hit singles, “Last Train Running” and “Falling Into You.” Buck credits his Alabama roots and his many years of living in California for his soulful rock Cala-Bama sound. Buck has also had numerous songs featured on television and in films as a composer, producer, and performer, including the song “You Came Along” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus on vocals for the Lifetime movie Flying By, “Working Man” by Whiskey Falls for the ABC TV show Extreme Makeover-Home Edition, and “Fast Talking Lover” by Whiskey Falls for the ABC TV show Nashville. Continuing to expand his songwriting and musicianship, Buck produced and co-wrote Kaitlyn Kohler's single “I'm Not Crying,” which recently went No. 1 at Texas Country radio. Buck has also recorded and/or toured with such notable acts as The Doobie Brothers (“Rockin' Down The Highway” live album), Tal Bachman (hit single “She's So High”), Jon McLaughlan (hit single “Beautiful Disaster”), John Waite, Chris Stills, Timothy B. Schmit (The Eagles), and more. He has also worked as a songwriting collaborator, session vocalist, and musician with songwriters and producers Jamie Houston (High School Musical, Carlos Santana), Charlie Midnight (The Doobie Brothers), and Bob Rock (Tal Bachman). Buck's latest works feature various iconic artists, including his self-produced rock ‘n' roll album, mixed by Chad Carlson (Taylor Swift, Blues Traveler, Chris Isaak, Trisha Yearwood); Trina Shoemaker (Queens Of The Stone Age, Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile); and Chris Brush. The album features notable lead guitarists Brad Whitford (Aerosmith), Damon Johnson (Lynyrd Skynyrd), Peter Stroud (Sheryl Crow), and the songwriting team of Buck and Charlie Midnight (James Brown, Joe Cocker, and Joni Mitchell). As a versatile entertainer, Buck's artistry encompasses American rock ‘n' roll with a unique soulful flare that comes from his gospel roots, creating a sound and style of his own. Buck is also on the 40-stop Peace Out North American tour with Aerosmith to mark 50 years of performing together and on a summer tour across the US and Europe with American rock supergroup the Hollywood Vampires. – Photo Credit: Katerina Benzova

Really Interesting Women - Podcast Revisited on 'Throwback Thursday'Anna Funder Ep. 105. Anna Funder is one of Australia's most acclaimed and awarded writers and an international success. One of her books is currently being made into a film with a Hollywood household name as its protagonist. ...and she dreamed of being a writer since she was a child. Anna spent her early childhood in Paris where her father was working. First day at primary school was a little tricky. Didn't understand what anyone was saying. She subsequently learnt to read and write in 2 languages. And from that moment, words were her obsession. She started her working life as a lawyer and gave up what she called “probably the best lawyer job in Australia”, working in the Attorney General's department on treaty negotiations and international law. But she didn't feel like it was her ‘real life'. She made a life changing decision to move to Berlin and become a writer. The full story can be heard on the podcast including, while promoting her book ‘Stasiland', going on a public stage in Germany where the first 2 rows were occupied by ex-Stasi, all taking notes! That 2003 book Stasiland won, amongst many other things, the Samuel Johnson Prize which is for the best non-fiction writing in the English language (!!). Actor Tom Hanks described it as 'fascinating, entertaining, hilarious, horrifying and very important.' Her 2012 novel, All That I Am, won a myriad of awards including the very prestigious Miles Franklin Award. In her recently released book, Wifedom, Anna uncovers George Orwell's ‘forgotten' wife Eileen O'Shaughnessy, and rewrites her into history. Geraldine Brooks described the book as, 'Simply, a masterpiece'. Her books are important because of the truths they reveal. They are beautifully researched and exquisitely told. EPISODE 1676: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to Anna Funder, author of WIFEDOM, about George Orwell's "invisible wife" Eileen O'Shaughnessy, Orwell's homosexuality, and patriarchy as doublethink ANNA FUNDER is the author of Stasiland and All That I Am, and the novella The Girl with the Dogs. Stasiland, hailed as a ‘classic', tells true stories of ordinary people who heroically resisted the communist dictatorship of East Germany, and of others who worked for the Stasi. In 2004 Stasiland won the UK's premier award for non-fiction, the Samuel Johnson Prize, and was a finalist for many other awards. Anna's novel All That I Am is an homage to four German anti-Hitler activists living bravely but precariously in exile in London in the 1930s. All That I Am won many literary awards including Australia's most prestigious, the Miles Franklin Prize, and was a finalist for the International IMPAC Dublin Award and the Commonwealth Writers Prize. It spent over a year on the bestseller lists, was BBC Book of the Week and Book at Bedtime, and The Times Book of the Month. All That I Am and Stasiland author Anna Funder's new book Wifedom rewrites the life of her literary hero George Orwell to put a main character back in the story. Blending forensic research, fiction, life writing and criticism, Funder reveals the importance of his wife Eileen O'Shaughnessy. Eileen's financial and practical support allowed him to write, and her own literary talent shaped his work, including Animal Farm. Written over six years, the idea for Wifedom came after the discovery of six letters in 2015 from O'Shaughnessy to a friend, their contents contrary to all the biographies written on Orwell.

Justin and Gurdip take some time this week to spotlight some notable or interesting versions of songs associated with Elvis that have been covered by other acts, both during and after Elvis' lifetime. For Song of the Week, while Gurdip hops aboard the "Frankfort Special," from the 1960 flick "G.I. Blues," Justin relaxes with the more mellow but sweetly performed ballad "All That I Am" from "Spinout." If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. This is it, This is the episode you all have been asking me for! You may have reinvented your self or changed your mindset many times in your life. I had to start at the core with my identity. In this episode we will discuss how my identity as a child and young adult was mostly covered in shame. I first felt shame for reasons beyond my control, an early bloomer who did not fit in...literally, and later as a result of trauma and repeated unhealthy patterns. For me, my identity did not become healthy until I realized that God had created me to be ALL THAT I AM and that he called it perfect. It took time, therapy, prayer and a true understanding of my purpose to truly grasp who I am and how I am called to show up in this world. Once I did though, I realized that I can ACTUALLY, overcome anything and do just about whatever I put my mind to because I was created to! I hope that through listening to my story, It will help you to realize JUST HOW MIRACULOUS it is that you are here, that who you are is so worthy and valuable, that you belong here and that you have a massive purpose to walk out and a legacy to leave. Our very special guest Tenor Daniel Emmet | America's Got Talent - Marie Osmond Tour | Film Actor Stars know stars and they instinctively know when there's a new one in the making. That's why powerhouse tenor Daniel Emmet was showered with stardust during his appearances on NBC's hit series, “America's Got Talent (AGT).” I argue that he was only showered with the stardust that he kicked up in his jaw dropping, female swooning & faint-worthy performance. Judge Simon Cowell said his voice was so mighty, “the stage lit up in fire.” Judge Heidi Klum called Emmet “a great performer” with “the most beautiful voice.” Judge Mel B heaped praise on his “passion, delivery and pitch perfect voice” and said she “could listen to him all night.” Noting that Emmet's wide range of musical expression spans far across a spectrum of genres from pop to rock to opera, judge Howie Mandell said his performance “made me feel classier than I am. It was like seeing Pavarotti doing Aerosmith!” He's multi-lingual. He's multi-genre. He is a Las Vegas headline performer, a soloist with more than one prestigious orchestra. He is aguest star on numerous national TV shows. He's a recording artist. His latest single is the “The People,” with rapper Faded BreeZie, which debuted last Oct. 30. He has toured with singer Marie Osmond who described him as “a star on the rise with a once in a generation voice.” His first single, “Passerà,” debuted at #2 on the iTunes classical chart. He headlined his own show, “All That I Am,” for an exclusive run at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. He appeared on the first season of the CW network's hit summer series, “The Big Stage;” debuted his solo symphonic concert tour with the Irving TX orchestra near Dallas and performed the National Anthem for Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, Rock ‘N' Roll Marathon Series and the Top Rank Heavyweight Boxing Championship on ESPN+. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Samantha Martin of Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar! With the worldwide pandemic wrecking utter havoc upon the careers of many musicians, Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar elected to use their time off the road to record, mix and master their latest tour-de-force, the astonishingly powerful, funky and deeply soulful The Reckless One.The follow up to 2018’s Juno-nominated Run To Me, The Reckless One represents another massive step forward for Samantha Martin as a songwriter, singer, arranger and band leader. Eleven of the album’s twelve songs were either co-written or solely composed by the multi-talented, multi-faceted artist. The one non-original, a funk infused cover of Bob Dylan’s “Meet Me in the Morning,” fuses Dylan’s lyric in a cataclysmic clash with the sensibilities of the Meters and the hurricane force of Howlin’ Wolf and Tina Turner at their rawest. It simply has to be heard to be believed.Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar,All That I Am,The Reckless OneSamantha Martin & Delta Sugar,Don't Have to Be,The Reckless Onemakingascene,Samantha Martin,Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar,I've Got a Feeling,The Reckless OneSamantha Martin & Delta Sugar,Loving You Is Easy,The Reckless One
Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents guitarist Damon Johnson (recorded Feb. 19th 2021) We discuss his new album, upcoming Thin Lizzy dates and much more. Press release - Battle Lessons released February 19, 2021 (Nashville, TN) January 13, 2021 -- Debuting today on Vevo, the new video for the title track to Damon Johnson and The Get Ready’s upcoming album, Battle Lessons, due out February 19, 2021 via Double Dragon Records. The video was directed by Carl Johnson, remotely from his Detroit studio, and features the trio ripping through the cut with a megawatt energy. The album’s iconic cover art is also utilized throughout the piece symbolizing an entity in motion moments before encountering a powerful electrical charge and ultimately exploding from the screen. Of the track Johnson says, “The lyrics to the song “Battle Lessons” are about some past experiences in various bands I’ve been in through the years. Though the words could easily be applied to any relationship.” He adds. “The lyric instructs me that I should take all the experience from my musical past and apply it to my now fully focused solo career.” No battle lessons lost on him. The internationally renowned guitarslinger, vocalist, songwriter, announced the release of his new album late last year. Battle Lessons is anchored by the searing title track showcasing Johnson’s gutsy vocals and razor riffs over presto grooves by The Get Ready drummer Jarred Pope (Tom Keifer) and bassist Robbie Harrington (Steve Vai). The song immediately reacted at radio, reaching #13 on the Classic Rock Chart. Work on the new album was made possible with the assistance of an Indiegogo pre-order helping to support the recording of Johnson and his new trio, The Get Ready. Recorded in Damon’s adopted hometown of Nashville, Battle Lessons was produced and mixed by multi-platinum producer/mixer, Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, Evanescence, Rush, Stone Sour and more). Rock fans know Johnson’s name from his years of scorching stages as lead guitarist in the Alice Cooper band, and later with Thin Lizzy and the Lizzy-offshoot Black Star Riders in addition to fronting the potent ‘90s Southern rockers Brother Cane. Johnson’s songs have been recorded and sung by stars like Stevie Nicks (“Everyday” from her Trouble in Shangri-La) and Steven Tyler (singing on “Just Feel Better” for Carlos Santana’s All That I Am). With Battle Lessons, Johnson returns to his original hard-rock sound, feeding that fire he first discovered as a teenager playing Van Halen and AC/DC covers while in garage bands. Featuring nine newly written songs, the tracks are just as much about clever lyrics and sticky melodies as eyelash-searing guitars. “These are as good of songs as I’ve been a part of creating, ever in my whole career,” Johnson says. And that’s saying something - as singer/guitarist, and frontman of Brother Cane, the Birmingham, Alabama rock band who notched a string of ’90s rock hits, including “Got No Shame,” “I Lie In The Bed I Make” and chart-topper “And Fools Shine On.” In 2019 Johnson released Memoirs of an Uprising, a solo project that is both fierce and diverse. The first single, “Shivering Shivering” became an instant Top 10 Rock track. Immediately following that albums release Johnson spent the remainder of the 2019 on a series of dates crossing North America including several shows with The Winery Dogs (a supergroup of rockers featuring Richie Kotzen, Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan), a run of shows supporting Clutch, and the U.S. leg of the UFO tour. Anna Funder is one of Australia's most acclaimed and celebrated writers. It won the Miles Franklin Prize, spent over one and a half years on the bestseller list, and is being made into a feature film. Anna's Stasiland tells true stories of people who heroically resisted the communist dictatorship of East Germany, and of people who worked for the Stasi. A contemporary classic, Stasiland won the 2004 Samuel Johnson Prize for best non-fiction in English. Tom Hanks called it ‘fascinating, entertaining, hilarious, horrifying and very important'. Both books are international bestsellers, published in over 24 countries. In 2016 Anna published The Girl with the Dogs, a poignantly beautiful short story inspired by Chekhov's The Lady with the Dogs. In her searingly insightful latest documentary, All That I Am, Director Tone Grøttjord-Glenne drops us into the life of eighteen year old Emilie Andrea. After five years in the foster system, she is returning to her family home to rebuild a fractured relationship with her mother and younger half-siblings. Over the next two years a determined Emilie begins to heal the trauma that haunts her, learns to speak her truth aloud, and takes her first steps towards a self-determined future. Now Emilie must gather the courage to reveal to her half-siblings the reason their father was imprisoned and their sister went away. Told with a commitment to emotional insight and dedication to Emilie's subjective experience, this is the story of an extraordinarily courageous young woman on the cusp of adulthood finding the voice that was long denied to her. Director Tone Grøttjord-Glenne joins us for conversation on embedding herself into the lives of Emilie and her family, how a well intentioned Norwegian justice and welfare system can sometimes to more harm than good and the reception her remarkably intimate look at trauma, struggle and healing has received in her native country of Norway and the recent North American premiere at the HotDocs film festival. Alan Ames is "a visionary of our times gifted with the gifts of the Holy Spirit." In this interview, I was personally touched by the special message from our Lord that Alan wanted to share with our listeners. Alan has had physical encounters with our Lord, Jesus Christ, and our Blessed Mother Mary. His gift of healing has been documented worldwide. I also share about the physical and spiritual healing I received after attending one of Alan's healing services. Alan is also an author of countless books that have changed the lives of both believers and unbelievers alike. Alan shared his conversion story plus I dare to ask him... What do Jesus and Mary look like? Describe briefly how the book "Through The Eyes Of Jesus" came about and if it's true that it has been translated in the 20 different languages? Of all your experiences over the past 24 years, which one had the most profound effect on you? Can you tell us about the new book that just came out "All That I Am," why you wrote it, and how it's affecting people? Why is confession so important and what has the Lord told you about this sacrament? What would the Lord say to those who are really struggling in life right now and are really going through a very difficult time?

FAR BACK FRIDAY!!!! An in depth review of Joe's second studio album "All That I Am". Despite having a debut album 4-5 years earlier this album really put Joe on the map. This album was definitely the one that made me a fan, not because of the entirety but because of the beginning. A consistent artist, he has 13 albums since his career began in 1992. If you haven't listend to Joe start with this album and watch your love for his catalog grow. Shout out to @rest_ur_anklez for the request. Talked a little about Ella Mai's new track "Trip", my plans to show unknown artist EPs some love in the future and other random stuff (business as usual). Just opinions from my side about the albums (lyrics, concept, jokes, etc). Requests are always welcome. Charlotte View and the School Holy Light and Divine Wisdom (Mary Magdalene) presents: Isolated and Invisible with Maria Brooks (Solar Angelica) calling from Split, Croatia. Mission: Birthing the Divine Human. Holy Shaman and Angelic Healer of Multi-dimensional and Cosmic Presence and Understanding. Isolation and Invisibility: Steps in the right direction. 1. Maria will be sharing some of the steps in the continuing journey leading to our Ascension on earth and how we are becoming the vibration of truth and unconditional love. As we are now co-creating with God we are creating the Blueprint to bring Heaven to Earth. Together awakened souls are co-creating the new dimension which will become our future. Now many of us are mystically connecting to the one consciousness and gaining strength from the profound guidance that we are willing to follow directly from source. With 'heartfelt' understanding and galloping faith Light-workers are now diving into the unknown and the unknown is becoming known. Or remembered. We have found our way home (to heaven) and now we are moving house. Our new home? Earth and living as a Divine Human. 2. Requirements: Putting our own house in order and addressing our fears is challenging and painful but very necessary. Learning to stand alone from feelings of not being included and exclusion, not being heard, pushed out, overruled, ignored all takes courage, strength, determination and perseverance. It's a fight to freedom. 3. Meditation. "I Am letting it go. I AM giving it up. I AM healing myself. I am surrendering to Source. I connect to ALL THAT I AM". website: www.mariabrooksholyshaman.com phone +385 914 444 699
This week I find myself feeling deeply grounded, boundlessly expansive and so, so clear. My mid-wifing culminated Monday with the single most important Soul reclamation of my journey so far. Since the show last week I have been reveling in the mystery, wrestling with missing pieces, sleuthing emerging threads, and Returning myself Home.I hadn't even really had words for the shift since then. Just silence and Arrival. The seed of my Soul... finally, finally Here.At peace. In love. As love. This, Sisters. This.I woke early yesterday to a magical fog blanketing my sacred land. It beckoned me to come be held in its wisdom. As I rested there, I found the perfect balance between simultaneously experiencing the vastness AND the focalization of All That I Am.I want this for you. I want it for Us.For each one of us to Become a beacon of light in the darkness. To find our Selves and know our Selves at the deepest levels. To shaman our own Souls. On Wild Soul Medicine this week, I showed up for one of the deepest Soul Conversations we’ve had yet. Everything I had planned to say ended up being thrown out the window in favor of a completely unexpected heart fire of Love from my Soul to yours.I had planned to talk with you about the re-opening of the Soulful Money Medicine course. The episode was scheduled to be an offering of this potent conversation to those of you who haven’t yet had the opportunity to join us there. But, as so often happens on the path of the Evolutionary, I showed up with what was present and alive in me instead and rode the wave of a decidedly unorthodox, UN-Launch of epic proportions. You’ll have to listen in to see what went down... Join me to play in a Soulgasm of connection with hearts yearning to find our way.The portals are open, bridges await, and whole worlds are Coming Undone.Let’s steady ourselves together and make our way ready for receiving the deepest medicine of our Wild Soul.Meet me there. P.S. The Soulful Money Medicine portal is now open. Whether you ultimately decide to join us or not is irrelevant. Receive the activation that is available simply by putting yourself in the space of the conversation. Go visit the page and listen to the stirring in your Soul.
