Fernanda Maciel uses ultrarunning to draw attention to environmental and social issues around the world. She's completed the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) nine times, earning a spot on the podium four times and winning once; is an Ultra-Trail World Tour champion; and among other feats, holds the World Female Record for running up and down Mount Kilimanjaro. “In Brazil, I was always running on the trail. So my love for the waterfalls and the rivers and for the nature there was giant, so that was part of myself.” Fernanda studied law at university because it was her dream to become an environmental lawyer and protect nature in her home state in Brazil.  She practiced law for a time, but was dismayed by the role that politics play in determining environmental policy. “Maybe I can do something for the environment, but being outside, being outdoors… just inspire people to be a little bit more aware about what's going on.” She decided that she could make a greater impact by committing herself to ultrarunning full time and bringing attention to environmental and social issues in the places where she runs. The White Flow project was born, and began with her becoming the first woman to run the Camino de Santiago de Compostela (860km in ten days), which she did to raise funds for children with cancer in Spain and Brazil.   “I did this project in Aconcagua, running up and down the highest mountain in America, and then part of the project was also about the environment and how they recycle their rubbish in the park.” Fernanda had dreamed of running up and down Aconcagua, in Argentina, and in 2016 became the first woman to do so.  She used the feat to learn about and share how a huge national park can manage the garbage left by visitors.  “I think more than the win, is for me just to finish. You suffer, you learn so much, you know, when you suffer, and during this race, you learn a lot.”  Fernanda has taken on a new challenge every year, but there's one that she's done multiple times  - the UTMB.  It starts and finishes in Chamonix, in the French Alps, and covers around 170 kilometers (106 miles), circumnavigating Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe.  Although she lives in Chamonix now,  the cold conditions are still a challenge for her; as she says, “I think because I'm from Brazil, I need to train three times more than European people.”  Although she's been victorious there, there have also been times when she hasn't finished, but she doesn't regret them. “The victory is cool,” she says, “but I think I learned so much when I couldn't finish.”  This year Fernanda has had to forgo races and record-setting after suffering a brain injury in February, while belaying her boyfriend rock climbing.  She's on her way to a full recovery, and says that as a result of the accident, “I'm really connected right now much more to the universe than I was before.” “Just be grateful for where you are right now.  I think the simple life is the most beautiful one and I wish the best for everybody. And yeah, just enjoy the mountains and the trails because this is a beautiful gift that you have.” Resources: Fernanda's website Fernanda's Facebook Fernanda's Instagram Fernanda's Twitter Running Realized: Running and Climate Change with the UN Humanitarian Office Running Realized: The Sustainable Road Race Fernanda's video for the UN's World Humanitarian Day Thank you to Athletic Greens, goodr, and Insidetracker for sponsoring this episode. They Shouldn't have 100 KM Qualifiers for Western States 100 Miler

Demand for the Western States Endurance Race continues to grow. They had a record 6666 applicants entered in the 2020 race lottery — an increase of nearly 14% over the 5862 applicants for the 2019 race. Now with the cancellation of the 2020 race, the odds of getting to the starting line be even more daunting. Legally only 369 are allowed to start this legendary race that Gordy Ainsleigh joined in 1974 with the horses of the Western States Trail Ride to see if he could complete the course on foot. Twenty-three hours and forty-two minutes later Gordy arrived in Auburn, proving that a runner could indeed run the entire trail within the 24-hour time limit of the Tevis Cup – 100 miles in one day. Why 369? Their permit with the U.S. Forest Service limits them to 369 runners. Why this odd number? In 1984, Congress enacted the California Wilderness Act, which created the Granite Chief Wilderness. The Western States Trail crosses the Granite Chief Wilderness, at about miles 6-10. Normally, organized events are not permitted in wilderness areas but, as Western States pre-existed the wilderness designation, they were able to get the race “grandfathered” into the legislation, with the proviso that they have no more runners than we had prior to the passage of the act. In 1984, it happened that there were 369 starters and that has been the magic number ever since. But the real number is 264! Because of the Automatics: The Western States Board of Trustees has instituted a set of rules around the overall selection process. There are several ways in which a runner may be automatically selected, and not be subject to the lottery. Here is a complete list of ways in which a runner may be automatically selected: Top 10 male finishers from the previous year’ race. Top 10 female finishers from the previous year’s race. Up to 24 slots are reserved for winners of the Golden Ticket Races. Six slots are reserved for elite athletes through the Ultra-Trail World Tour. Each running club that sponsors and staffs an aid station at Western States is allowed to designate one runner. Generally speaking, each is a volunteer who has worked that particular aid station for at least three prior years. Certain sponsor agreements specify a designated runner for the sponsor. Members of the Board of Directors. Pioneers: Gordy Ainsleigh, who ran solo in 1974 and Cowman A-Moo-Ha, who duplicated the feat in 1976. Nine-time finishers going for their first attempt at a tenth finish, and 18-time and 19-time finishers going for their first attempts at 19th and 20th finishes. Winners of the twice-annual Raffle Drawing. The drawings are held 18 and 12 months prior to the Run for which the winning entries apply. The Greg Soderlund Silver Legend Entrant. So 264 will be drawn in the lottery that was started in 2017. The final three entrants to get to 369 will be drawn from those in the audience. We will also draw an additional 50 names for the ordered wait list. The probabilities of being selected as one of the 264 in the lottery or 50 on the wait list (314) are as follows: 9 runners with 128 tickets, each has a 80.4% chance of getting drawn / Year 8 54 runners with 64 tickets, each has a 55.8% chance of getting drawn / Year 7 126 runners with 32 tickets, each has a 33.5% chance of getting drawn / Year 6 315 runners with 16 tickets, each has a 18.5% chance of getting drawn / Year 5 549 runners with 8 tickets, each has a 9.7% chance of getting drawn / Year 4 914 runners with 4 tickets, each has a 5.0% chance of getting drawn / Year 3 1447 runners with 2 tickets, each has a 2.5% chance of getting drawn / Year 2 3250 runners with 1 ticket, each has a 1.3% chance of getting drawn / Year 1 https://linktr.ee/AND3RSON --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/andy-noise/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/andy-noise/support

He has top 20 finishes at HK100, UTMF and Ultra Trail Australia, as well as winning the China Skyrunning Ultra Series 2016/17 and finishing top 50 at the Ultra Trail World Tour in 2015 and 2016. With his life changing tack somewhat due to parenthood, John still found time in 2019 to win the Asia Trail Masters series. Not content with merely running and being a stalwart of the Hong Kong scene, John is also a founder of the running brand T8 and the owner of Gone Running, a brick-and-mortar running store in Hong Kong. In this episode we discuss running in times of social unrest and during the uncertainty of Covid-19, the joy of running trails in an urban metropolis, what the Nine Dragons are and which level of typhoon is too much to run in. We also get the lowdown on the Hallertau Riverhead Rampage 21km winner Tom Hunt’s race, and his buildup to the Tahoe 200 Wowzers. ..Enjoy!

“There was definitely a time in my life where I had to tell myself, ‘It's OK to be broken.' That's OK. The goal in life isn't to be perfect—nobody's perfect. There's no one in history that we can point to that's lived a perfect life. So, the reality is—and you said this so wonderfully when I was at UTMB and I was like, ‘I know this,' when I was so disappointed in my performance, I was so down—and you said, ‘It isn't about how you finish, it's about how you respond to this journey and how you continue on.' And I'm like, ‘I know this, I know this,' and that is just a great reminder for everything in life because life, when it comes down to it, it's the journey that's the most fulfilling part.” This week I sat down with one of my most requested guests: Sally McRae. The 40-year-old mom of two is a professional ultrarunner living in Southern California and—in the interest of full disclosure—I've been her coach for a little over two years now. Earlier this year she won her first race on the Ultra Trail World Tour, the Mozart 100, and more recently she finished 23rd at the UTMB, her highest ever finish at that event, in what was one of the grittiest races I've ever had the pleasure to witness firsthand. This is a long episode folks, coming in right at about 90 minutes, and it does not disappoint. So much to take away from this one about relationships, communication, competitiveness, learning to give yourself grace, recognizing our victories, remembering what's important in life, and so much more. This weekend Aughnasheelin's Barry McWeeney joins Breifne to look forward to his sides crunch Division 1 fixture with Fenagh St. Caillins which is a must win if they want to stay in the top division of the league. He chats about how the changes to the club leagues are a step in the right direction but won't solve the basic problem of low numbers for rural sides like Aughnasheelin. He raises the idea of a divisional side or amalgamations to allow senior players to play week in week out at that level. With a crunch relegation battle with neighbours Fenagh and a tough start to the championship campaign with Champions Aughawillan and St. Mary's first up in the next two weeks. He outlines how the club are aiming to be competitive enough in both competitions to retain their Division 1 and Senior status. Ultra Runner Ricki Wynne discusses the sport and the impact that himself and his two brothers Brian and Alan have made in endurance mountain trail running over the last three years with top 20 finishes in the Ultra Trail World Tour. Their next World Tour event is the Kerry Ultra in September. Sligo Rover's Niall Morahan joins us to discuss the beauty of Yerevan where he's in the Irish squad at the UEFA U19 Championships in Armenia. He talks about the positive mood in the Irish camp after their defeat to the French and their chances of progression to a semi final after their game tomorrow afternoon against the Czech Republic. Breifne also goes through the GAA and Soccer fixtures, results and permutations for all the weekend's action.

Three years ago Rachel Sklar decided to run her first marathon. The ghostwriter from Thornhill had a background in the combat sport of Muay Thai but was far from an experienced runner. That all changed following her first race in 2016. Eight months after her marathon debut, Sklar challenged herself to a 50km trail ultra, and she hasn't looked back. This year, Sklar is setting a much bigger challenge for herself: to race 12 ultra marathons in 12 countries over 12 months. Throughout 2019, she will travel to 5 continents, covering over 1,300 kilometres on foot. Her destinations will range from desert climates, to snow capped mountains, to tropical rainforests, to regions with active volcanoes. Sklar hopes that her journey will inspire others to set grand goals and to trek boldly into the unknown.
