Playlist:DAVID BOWIE - StarmanDAVID BOWIE - My Death (Live, Hammersmith Odeon, London, 1973)DAVID BOWIE - It Ain't EasyDAVID BOWIE - Star (aka 'Stars') (Alternative Version - Take 5)DAVID BOWIE - StarDAVID BOWIE - Hang On To Yourself (Demo)DAVID BOWIE - Hang On To Yourself (Early Ziggy Session Take)DAVID BOWIE - Hang On To Yourself (Live, BBC, 1972)DAVID BOWIE - Velvet Goldmine (Ziggy Session Outtake)DAVID BOWIE - John, I'm Only Dancing (Alternative Trident Studios Version) DAVID BOWIE - Life On Mars?
Hablamos sobre el disco ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' de David Bowie, con el cantante y compositor Héctor Gerónimo como invitado. Héctor Gerónimo nos presta ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' de David Bowie. In this episode, the 41st overall and the fifth this season, Kevin welcomes his college professor Joe Klinebriel onto the show. Joe talks about his uncanny ability to be on the cutting edge of musical trends, making a good first impression when meeting celebrities, and the music that both shaped his life and inspired a one-person show he has been writing during his sabbatical away from teaching at Clarke University. Also, here is a link to watch Joe's brief appearance in the MTV News bit mentioned in the interview. It's great. John T. Drake (VP Biz Dev and Licensing for Games at Disney, fmr. PlayStation and Harmonix) joins Matt and Jason for a crazy specific episode of CrossFade! Where vocalist Travis Morrison looks inward on The Dismemberment Plan’s “Change,” Ziggy St--erm, David Bowie looks to the skies on “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” – but both tell their own specific stories. John regales us with some positively wild tales from his Harmonix days (warning: discussions of blood, T. Pain, Pete Wentz, and a disappointed Beatle) and more in our community questions segment before Brittany Howard’s “13th Century Metal” takes us out, courtesy of MinnMax supporter James Burkett. Sharon Horgan is a writer, actor and producer best known for co-writing and co-starring in the Channel 4 series Catastrophe with US comedian Rob Delaney. Sharon was born in 1970 in east London, where her parents Ursula and John were running a pub. They moved to Ireland when Sharon was three and eventually set themselves up as turkey farmers. Sharon went to a convent school, then art college in Dublin, before moving to London in 1990, hoping to become an actor. Following six years working at a job centre, she decided to get a degree and enrolled on an English course at Brunel University. She reconnected with Dennis Kelly, who she had acted with previously, and they started writing together. Their breakthrough was the BBC Three series Pulling, first broadcast in 2006, which chronicled the lives of three single women leading unfulfilling lives in an unfashionable part of London. Sharon appeared in films while continuing to write and, in 2014, set up her own production company. In 2015, together with Rob Delaney, she co-wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed Catastrophe, about a couple who discover they're expecting a child after a short affair. Sharon was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Female Comedy Performer and she and Rob won the BAFTA TV Craft Award for Best Comedy Writer in 2016. Catastrophe ran for four series, ending in 2019. Sharon's other writing credits include the acclaimed series Motherland, Divorce and This Way Up, while her most recent film role was in Military Wives, opposite Kristin Scott Thomas. Sharon is divorced from her husband, Jeremy Rainbird, and lives in London with her two daughters. This week we explore how perceptions of mental health have changed over time, and the power of stories to shape and change those ideas, in honour of Mental Health Awareness Week 2017. Our fantastic guest is Dr Jon Day from King's College London, who specialises in philosophy of mind, neurology, and modern literature. From Virginia Woolf and PTSD, to Freudian analysis and neuromania, it's a though-provoking look at our concept of 'the mind'. Plus we discover a poet who came up with the Big Bang Theory before any of the scientists! Mixtape: 1. Rock n Roll Suicide by David Bowie 2. BTSTU by Jai Pual 3. Where Do You Go To My Lovely by Peter Sarstedt 4. Silent Noon by Vaughn Williams' (ft. Anthony Rolfe Johnson) 5. This Must Be The Place by Talking Heads 6. Adam's on business in the Negative Zone and Mike's relaxing on the set of Confessions of a Milkman. However there's a David Bowie album to discuss. Is Rock n' Roll Suicide the best album closer ever? How many times is the word 'Love' said in Soul Love? Is the album really the iconic masterpiece that it's held up to be? Well two boobs will give their opinions on it. Plus Mike's Mum solves the Hunk Dory Great Game debate, a quick chat about Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Skeleton Tree and we welcome the actor Powers Boothe into the VIP area.
I'm of that generation, I experienced the "Starman" moment seeing David Bowie on Top Of The Pops with a shock of orange spikes, dressed in clothes that defied description, putting his arm around Mick Ronson in a way that seems so innocuous today but was extraordinary then. At school the following day it felt as though the world had rearranged itself overnight to accommodate this beguiling new presence, similarly when the news broke on Monday morning it was like losing one of the major coordinates of my world, I felt disorientated and adrift, this time in a bad way. David Bowie was just a phenomenal artist who defined the seventies, the decade belonged to him; from glam to soul to ambient, from straight up rock'n roll to new contours of sonic wizardry, Bowie took us on a helter-skelter ride reinventing himself again and again, and all with a consummate cool and a fiery creativity. I wouldn't pretend that Bowie made a telling contribution to black music, and Luther Vandross had quite enough talent to make it without a leg-up from the Thin White Duke, yet it's impossible to understand Bowie's oeuvre without looking at his relationship with it. From stealing Mingus titles "Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am" to taking inspiration from James Brown for Ziggy Stardust's "Rock 'n Roll Suicide".. the soulful side of Bowie is never far from the surface. Then in '74, riding the crest of a wave of his (glam) success, Bowie makes the kind of radical move that would go on to define his career, he makes a soul record. Recording at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound and bringing on board the likes of Vandross, Sly & The Family Stone drummer Andy Newmark, and guitarist Carlos Alomar, Young Americans is a record that stands both within and outside tradition. A lush, sensuous and emotive album that Bowie himself would describe as "plastic soul", self effacing as ever, as he was about his singing voice, Young Americans and several cuts from the following Station To Station are as good as it gets when it comes to a white artist making soul music in their own way.....after all "Fame" and "Golden Years" were good enough for U.S. tv's definitive Soul Train... But hey, I don't need to justify Bowie's brilliance, begrudge him and you can stand outside with the real weirdos!!!! Concentrating on this mid seventies period, when coincidentally Bowie was taking vast quantities of the old marching powder, and dipping into both preceding and subsequent phases, here's two hours of appreciation and celebration. Let's not lament too much, yes Bowie's is an irreplaceable talent, but we should be grateful for all he gave through those golden years. 1. 1984 2. Golden Years 3. Fascination 4. You’re so natural, religiously unkind.
Happy week of Thanksgiving, everyone! In this episode, we discuss the many, many things on this Earth we're grateful for, and offend the Pat Morita estate within the first 90 seconds or so.
