This week on The Open Door (August 7th) we will explore the thought of Servant of God Romano Guardini, a widely influential theologian whom both Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis deeply admired. So did Flannery O'Connor! Guardini is often thought of as a unifying figure in the Church. Our welcome guest is Christine Myers Miller. She is a graduate of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies in Marriage and Family in Washington, DC, and is the Director of Adult Faith Formation, Marriage & Family Life at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Parish in Tulsa. Dr. Myers Miller researched Romano Guardini for her doctoral thesis, studying the topic of Christian responsibility for the world. She has published essays in the Catechetical Review, Humanum online review, and in the important theological journal Communio. Among the questions we'll ask are the following. Could you tell us a bit about yourself? Have you always been an Okie? What was it like to study at the John Paul II Institute? How does the Institute reflect the vision of St. John Paul II?What are your responsibilities as Director of Adult Faith Formation and Marriage & Family Life at your parish? Could you introduce us to Romano Guardini? A time-line would help. And how did he survive World War II? In these “interesting times” there's deep disagreement on just what it is to be a human being. What does this mean in terms of how we can best address ethical questions? On your view, crisis can be an occasion of growth. How might this come about with regard to scandals in the Church?Romano Guardini saw the apparent contradiction between faith and science as one of the main sources of crisis in his time, and it surely remains one for us. How might we effectively respond to it?How might Guardini advise us to manage AI technology? You have written that “faith needs culture to survive” and warned that “a faith without culture is a dying thing.” What would a Catholic culture look like today? Might it involve a distinctive Catholic political presence?

Za nami so velikonočni prazniki. Kristjani ob teh praznikih podoživljamo Kristusovo trpljenje in smrt – še posebno pa njegovo vstajenje. Glede velikega petka smo bolj ali manj enakega prepričanja. Kristus je živel, bil je dober človek, pomagal je ljudem, bil je dober govornik, retorik, bil je čudodelnik. Vse to poskušamo dojeti in razumeti v koordinatah njegove človeške narave. Kaj to pomeni?

Although lauded in much of the Church for her character, wisdom, and holiness, Mary is not as often recognized for the tremendous burden she carried in being the mother of Jesus. Faced with confounding experiences of a son whose relationship with God went beyond her comprehension and bearing the grief of knowing her little boy was destined to suffer, Mary's experience of the person of Jesus was wholly unique, as was her steadfast loyalty and love. In his book, The Lord, Romano Guardini says of Mary, “Not understanding, never was she to lose heart, never to fall behind. Inwardly she accompanied the incomprehensible figure of her son every step of his journey, however dark. Perseverance in faith even on Calvary—this was Mary's inimitable greatness.” What can we learn from a woman who willingly sacrificed it all in her faith for the Messiah she once held in her arms?

In this episode, Lily reflects on gratitude. Written as a separate essay in the last year of Dietrich von Hildebrand's life, gratitude is seen as a crucial virtue. Lily discusses how gratitude is crucial in finding happiness, that one must be grateful for the great gifts of life, being, faith, and everything in between. Erstsendung: 03.10.2019

Adrianna, Sofia, and Giuli talk about the experience of the resurrection. What's at stake in the Resurrection of Christ? What does the promise of new life have to do with our daily experiences of suffering, boredom, and the search for meaning? Where have we seen, in our own lives and in the world, evidence of the presence of the Risen Lord? // Our media recommendation is the dystopian novel The Children of Men by P.D. James. Papal biographer and scholar George Weigel is fond of saying that for Catholics, “stuff matters.” Stuff like our physical bodies, bread, wine, water, incense, candles, bells, linen, altars, and ashes. Catholic Christianity is deeply incarnational, rooted firmly in God's good Creation. And that rooting shows itself most clearly when we worship, that is, in the liturgy of the Mass. Fr. Romano Guardini was one of the towering Catholic intellectuals of the twentieth century who for all his erudition, wrote a simple little book entitled Sacred Signs in which he gently and simply explained this connection between material and the inner world of the spirit. The book is a favorite of theologian Dr. Kent Lasnoski and a wonderful book to read during these last weeks of Lent.
In this episode, Fr. Steve and Ashley continue to use Romano Guardini's book, Learning the Virtues That Lead You To God, this time looking at his chapters on the virtues of Justice and Reverence. Join Sofia, Adrianna, and Giuli for a discussion about the body. What does it mean that, in Romano Guardini's words, there is no religion as materialistic as Christianity? How does God's esteem for our embodiment change our gaze on ourselves and others? Can we learn to affirm Christ in our bodies? What do we do when faced with the fallenness or woundedness of our embodied nature? // Our media recommendation is Lorenzo Bernini's sculpture The Ecstasy of St Teresa: www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecstasy_of_Saint_Teresa. In this episode, Fr. Steve and Ashley talk about the virtue of acceptance, and how growing in acceptance leads to a growth in patience. In order to be patient with ourselves and others, we must first accept the circumstances we find ourselves in. If we do not accept reality before us, it is impossible to interact with that reality and receive the graces the Lord wishes to bestow upon us. We can all grow in patience! What happened in the 13th century philosophical world that radically changed the nature of Western European culture (hint we are still dealing with it today)? In this 50th episode, Fr. Steve and Ashley talk about the virtue of Truthfulness, as mentioned by Romano Guardini in his book, Learning the Virtues That Lead You To God.

This talk is the first part of a two-part consideration of the spirituality of the Mass and Holy Eucharist. Our primary text for discussion of the Mass is the 20th century classic Meditations Before Mass by Father Romano Guardini, servant of God. Guardini is a favorite author of both Pope Benedict and Pope Francis, among many others. This talk focuses especially on the following sections:2. I - Stillness2.XVIII - The Congregation and the Church3. XXIV - The Memorial of the New Covenant3.XXVIII - Christ's Offering of Self3.XXXI - The Mass of the New CovenantBy way of a catechetical refresher on the Mass, here is a video to watch: https://www.goodcatholic.com/catholic-mass-described-by-st-justin-martyr/ The music in the introduction and close of this podcast is provided by George Sarah. This program of mystagogy is hosted by the Adult Faith Programs at Saint Stephen Martyr Church in Chesapeake, Virginia.
"The Lord's memorial is the central mystery of our Christian life. It has taken the form of a meal at which He offers Himself as the food. We were taught this in the Communion instruction of our childhood; we hear it repeated again and again in sermons and retreats; we read it in religious books. Yet are we really aware of the stupendousness of the thought?" Romano Guardini (1885-1968) was a German priest and academic, regarded to be one of the most important Catholic intellectual figures of the 20th century. He authored numerous books and was a major influence on such Catholic thinkers as Josef Pieper, Luigi Giussani and Joseph Ratzinger, among others. He declined a cardinalship offered by Pope Paul VI in 1965, and his cause for canonization was opened in December 2017 by the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. Guardini was particularly influential in the area of liturgy. The work from which this reflection comes, Meditations Before Mass, originated as a series of discourses offered in preparation for the celebration of Mass. "Their purpose," Guardini writes, "was simply to reveal what the Mass demands of us and how those demands may be properly met." This particular meditation can serve as a helpful preparation for the coming Solemnity of Corpus Christi. This is spring Outdoor Week at Wyoming Catholic College and as a result our campus is a bit of a ghost town. Students are spending the week canyoneering, canoeing, rock climbing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, learning to hunt, and producing Shakespeare's “Richard III.” As a college, we take educating the bodies of our students as seriously as we take educating their minds and spirits. That's why, as we approach Palm Sunday and Holy Week, we are rebroadcasting an interview with Dr. Kent Lasnoski about Romano Guardini's book Sacred Signs and the importance of the physical in our spiritual lives.
In this episode, I speak with James Poulos about his book, Human, Forever: The Digital Politics of Spiritual War. We discuss a wide variety of themes including technology, human memory, what it means to be an embodied person. James argues that instead of worrying about an impending crisis, we need to realize that it has already happened — Digital entities have taken over. We need to recognize this, figure out what has happened, and orient our senses and sensibilities around what technology does, how it changes us, and how we can work with and use technology to affirm our humanity. Part of this includes using technology better which is one of the reasons he argues for the importance of Bitcoin. Poulos argues that we are at Generation Zero— the first generation of the digital age. This brings with it a heightened responsibility for fatherhood, memory, ancestry, knowing who we are and where we come from. Understanding our humanity, our embodiment, the value of suffering, and that human memory is distinct and essential to our human identity can help us become resistant and not succumb to digital devices, but put technology at the service of our humanity. We discuss a number of themes and thinkers including Tele-visual technology and the culture of the imagination and the shift to the digital medium and machine memory Social Credit system in China— and the rising social credit system in the West Human faculty of memory The return of analogy as a mode of thinking through human problems Political Theology in China, Russia, Europe, and the US Continuing Gnostic movements in the West The Medium is the Message Human Consciousness Mind and Brain Post-Humanism - Trans-humanism - Transgenderism Digital Cyborgs Human Identity Artificial Intelligence Embodiment and the Christian Dogma of Resurrection of the Body Marshall MacLuhan Romano Guardini Marianna Mazucatto Karl Stern Visit https://www.themoralimagination.com/episodes/snead for show notes and resources.
