BBQ Judging, Scythe Harvesting, and Christian MarriageBarbecue Competition Judging: Adam shares his first experience as a barbecue competition judge at a local Catholic church and school fundraiser in Tulsa, where he was joined by his son Jude (assistant judge) and two priests.Judged four categories: chicken, pulled pork, ribs, and brisket (Adam insists brisket is the primary measure; David (wrongly) argues for ribs).12 pit masters competed; judged on appearance, taste, tenderness, texture, uniqueness, and overall (max score 25).Advice from Joe Martin's son: Take one bite per entry to avoid overeating (48 bites total across 40 minutes).Adam judged strictly (e.g., scores as low as 14, zero for appearance), while priests gave higher scores (23–24), highlighting differing standards.Event fostered camaraderie among pit masters (12 hours together) and service to attendees, teaching kids sacrifice, friendship, and craft articulation.Shout-out to Brian Schooley for organizing; Adam and David plan to enter as The Catholic Man Show next year, with Jim in a dunk tank.Main DiscussionWheat Harvest with a ScytheDavid's Experience: David harvested two 45x45-foot wheat plots using a scythe, finding it soothing, peaceful, and in tune with nature despite being exhausting.Quotes Wendell Berry: “The means we use to do our work almost certainly affects the way we look at the world” (via an X account, @minahan8).Compared to last year's sickle (felt “commie”), the scythe was efficient for small-scale farming; not practical for large-scale but satisfying.Kids raked straw (post-harvest, nutritionless due to seeding) for pig bedding or garden mulch; straw vs. hay explained (hay retains nutrition).Adam plans to borrow David's scythe for his own wheat harvest, nervous about back strain.Wendell Berry Reflection: Hosts revisit Berry's essays, appreciating his beautiful, idealistic conclusions but finding his reasoning insufficient (e.g., abandoning tractors would starve people).Compare Berry's idealism to J.R.R. Tolkien and Guardini's Letters at Lake Como; both depict lovely worlds but lack practical solutions for modern challenges.Christian Marriage and Pope Leo XIIIIntroduction to Pope Leo XIII: Adam introduces Pope Leo XIII (1810–1903), a prophetic figure who addressed modernity's challenges (secularism, communism, liberalism) in the late 19th century.Known for Rerum Novarum (1891, Catholic social teaching), reviving Thomism in seminaries (to counter Nietzsche, Hegel, and communism), and engaging modern society. His encyclical Arcanum Divinae Sapientiae (1880) emphasizes Christian marriage as a divine, not secular, institution, foundational to society.Critiqued rise of divorce, moral relativism, and civil interference undermining marriage's sanctity; argued church, not state, holds primary authority over marriage.Marriage as Trinitarian Image: Marriage mirrors the Trinity's relational society, where spousal love is so real it produces a third (child), reflecting Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.Secular view (Enlightenment-era and today) reduces marriage to a consensual contract, ignoring its sacramental, stable, and permanent nature.State has a role in regulating marriage per natural law, but church's supernatural authority supersedes.Ephesians 5 and Mutual SubmissionScriptural Basis: Leo XIII references Ephesians 5 (footnoted), where St. Paul instructs mutual submission out of reverence for Christ, with specific roles: wives submit to husbands, husbands love wives as Christ loved the church.Secular society fixates on “wives submit,” ignoring mutual submission and...
We are brought to the denouement of the Ladder in these final steps on Dispassion and the “Trinity of Virtues” - Faith, Hope and Love. The words of St. John ring forth as if from the mouth of a poet. It is only one who has experience of and has seen the beauty of Divine love who can then speak of the urgent longing that begins to take over the soul when it no longer is held back by the weight of sin or one's ego. The dispassionate man, St. John tells us, no longer lives himself, but Christ lives in him. He has eyes only for the beloved and living in constant union with him. All becomes Grace; Christ's virtue becomes our virtue, Christ's strength becomes our strength, Christ's love becomes our love. Understanding this we must not allow anything to hold us back. Above all we should desire to enter into the bridal chamber; for this is exactly what Christ has made possible for us. Our relationship with God is often described with nuptial imagery; we are destined to become one with the most holy Trinity. What excuse could we possibly put forward for not at least seeking to break through the wall of our sin by embracing the forgiveness that is so freely offered? St. John's discussion of dispassion leads us to the final step of the Ladder. The theological virtues, named so because they have God as their end, become St. John's subject matter. These three are preeminent because they endure unto eternity. The greatest of them, love, allows no respite for the soul but drives her on with a kind of blessed madness. Overcome with an urgent longing for the Beloved it takes on a greater resemblance to God in so far as this is possible. The soul becomes inebriated - so often does it seek to satisfy its thirst for divine love. Having satisfied this desire the heart expands, taking on distinctive properties where it becomes a fountain of faith, an abyss of patience and a sea of humility. What takes place then is extraordinary: love banishes every thought of evil or judgment. Only mercy, forgiveness and compassion remain. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:13:44 Myles Davidson: According to Wikipedia Scorcese is doing one on Moses the Black 00:14:08 Myles Davidson: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Scorsese_Presents:_The_Saints 00:18:40 Bob Cihak, AZ: P. 243, #13 00:37:15 Anthony: Renzo Allegri write a book: "Padre Pio Man of Hope." This week on The Open Door (August 7th) we will explore the thought of Servant of God Romano Guardini, a widely influential theologian whom both Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis deeply admired. So did Flannery O'Connor! Guardini is often thought of as a unifying figure in the Church. Our welcome guest is Christine Myers Miller. She is a graduate of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies in Marriage and Family in Washington, DC, and is the Director of Adult Faith Formation, Marriage & Family Life at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Parish in Tulsa. Dr. Myers Miller researched Romano Guardini for her doctoral thesis, studying the topic of Christian responsibility for the world. She has published essays in the Catechetical Review, Humanum online review, and in the important theological journal Communio. Among the questions we'll ask are the following. Could you tell us a bit about yourself? Have you always been an Okie? What was it like to study at the John Paul II Institute? How does the Institute reflect the vision of St. John Paul II?What are your responsibilities as Director of Adult Faith Formation and Marriage & Family Life at your parish? Could you introduce us to Romano Guardini? A time-line would help. And how did he survive World War II? In these “interesting times” there's deep disagreement on just what it is to be a human being. What does this mean in terms of how we can best address ethical questions? On your view, crisis can be an occasion of growth. How might this come about with regard to scandals in the Church?Romano Guardini saw the apparent contradiction between faith and science as one of the main sources of crisis in his time, and it surely remains one for us. How might we effectively respond to it?How might Guardini advise us to manage AI technology? You have written that “faith needs culture to survive” and warned that “a faith without culture is a dying thing.” What would a Catholic culture look like today? Might it involve a distinctive Catholic political presence?

(Jesaja 57,15 LUT)
What happened in the 13th century philosophical world that radically changed the nature of Western European culture (hint we are still dealing with it today)? What did these people believe about the nature of mathematics (and why should you care)? Who was Joseph Pieper (and for that matter Romano Guardini) (and why should you read both of them)? This talk is the first part of a two-part consideration of the spirituality of the Mass and Holy Eucharist. Our primary text for discussion of the Mass is the 20th century classic Meditations Before Mass by Father Romano Guardini, servant of God. Guardini is a favorite author of both Pope Benedict and Pope Francis, among many others. This talk focuses especially on the following sections:2. I - Stillness2.XVIII - The Congregation and the Church3. XXIV - The Memorial of the New Covenant3.XXVIII - Christ's Offering of Self3.XXXI - The Mass of the New CovenantBy way of a catechetical refresher on the Mass, here is a video to watch: https://www.goodcatholic.com/catholic-mass-described-by-st-justin-martyr/ The music in the introduction and close of this podcast is provided by George Sarah. This program of mystagogy is hosted by the Adult Faith Programs at Saint Stephen Martyr Church in Chesapeake, Virginia.
"The Lord's memorial is the central mystery of our Christian life. It has taken the form of a meal at which He offers Himself as the food. We were taught this in the Communion instruction of our childhood; we hear it repeated again and again in sermons and retreats; we read it in religious books. Yet are we really aware of the stupendousness of the thought?" Romano Guardini (1885-1968) was a German priest and academic, regarded to be one of the most important Catholic intellectual figures of the 20th century. He authored numerous books and was a major influence on such Catholic thinkers as Josef Pieper, Luigi Giussani and Joseph Ratzinger, among others. He declined a cardinalship offered by Pope Paul VI in 1965, and his cause for canonization was opened in December 2017 by the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. Guardini was particularly influential in the area of liturgy. The work from which this reflection comes, Meditations Before Mass, originated as a series of discourses offered in preparation for the celebration of Mass. "Their purpose," Guardini writes, "was simply to reveal what the Mass demands of us and how those demands may be properly met." This particular meditation can serve as a helpful preparation for the coming Solemnity of Corpus Christi. Can we learn some profound things about the impact of technology on our world and our lives from a voice that spoke out 100 years ago? How could someone writing in the 1920s possibly glimpse what we’d be facing in our highly technological world of as we approach the 2020s? Well, it may seem unlikely, but it is indeed true that the Catholic Priest, theologian, early media and technology scholar Romano Guardini glimpsed well in advance where we were heading in the modern world. My guest today is not Romano Guardini—he’s not available—but Robert Duncan, who is completing a documentary on Guardini’s “Letters from Lake Como”, that deal deeply with the questions of technology and culture. Robert Duncan is an award-winning multimedia journalist from the Rome Bureau of Catholic News Service. He was born and raised in North Carolina, he studied film, television, journalism and philosophy at New York University. He now resides in the countryside near Rome with his family. ------ Live: www.redeemerradio.com Follow Redeemer Radio on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram: @RedeemerRadio Follow McGrath Institute for Church Life on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram: @McGrathND Subscribe to the Podcast: iTunes | Google Play | SoundCloud

This Academy Discourse by Professor Michele Nicoletti, Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Trento, Italy and Former President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.is part of a discourse series sponsored by Mason Hayes & Curran. Friday, March 29, 2019 - 18:00, Academy House. About the speaker Michele Nicoletti is Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Trento. He has authored books on Kierkegaard's philosophy of subjectivity (1983), Carl Schmitt's political theology (1990), Politics and the Evil (2000) and edited critical editions and translations of XIX and XX century philosophers like Rosmini, Stein, Guardini, Boeckenfoerde. His research interests focus on the intertwining between ethics, anthropology and political theory. Visiting fellow at several international universities (i.a. Freiburg i.B.. KU Leuven, Notre Dame, IN, USA), he has been the scientific coordinator of national and international research projects and is the chief editor of the scientific journal Politica e Religione. Annuario di Teologia politica. 2013-2018 he has been a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies and of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, where he has led the Socialist, Democratic and Green Group. From January to June 2018 he has served as President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. During his mandate, he has launched the Council of Europe Academic Network initiative, which he is now developing: a project for the coordination of major universities and academic institutions in the field of human rights, democracy and the rule of law. About the discourse In his presentation, Professor Nicoletti will discuss how fear, intolerance, resentment, hatred, mistrust in the ruling classes are seriously affecting European countries. Representative democracies are showing an increasing weakness and lack of efficacy in governing the great contemporary challenges, such as climate changes, migrations or the protection of social rights. The overlapping of different democracy levels (local, national, international) does not help. These difficulties are not new, but it is clear that the meaning and practices of democracy in Europe require a new theoretical and practical effort to regain the trust of citizens. This effort should start with an in-depth analysis of the present situation. In this context, the fear of self-dispossession can be identified as a feature common to contemporary societies. This fear can either draw regressive responses, such as instable self-identification with charismatic leaders or populist movements, or can foster emancipation. The latter is possible through a vigorous re-proposal of the principle of ‘self-belonging', understood as, on the one hand, the aspiration that one's dignity is respected, and, on the other, that the irreducibility and inviolability of the Self be recognized. This principle can serve as the foundation for not only an existential perspective of the liberty and relationality of the individual, but also a vision of society based upon respect for basic universal rights and discursive and participatory procedures which extend from the local to the global level. This vision entails an idea of democracy which aims to be truth-sensitive, non-paternalistic, transparent and responsive, and can serve as a new conceptual basis for rethinking Europe as a community of peoples and States based on the recognition of diversity and mutual respect.
Hoy el Señor nos ofrece un tesoro hecho Palabra. Nos revela GRATIS la solución a la pregunta por el hombre. La cuestión fundamental del mundo. ¿Qué hacemos aquí? ¿A qué hemos venido?

This is the second episode in the series on Heidegger and Theology, and a symposium on the same topic at CTR (December, 2015), with George Pattison, Professor of Divinity, University of Glasgow, gave a talk on the topic "Why Heidegger Didn’t Like Catholic Theology" This presentation can found in a revised version, in the anthology Heidegger's Black Notebooks and the Future of Theology, edited by dr. Mårten Björk and prof. Jayne Svenungsson. Full abstract for the presentation: "Much of the content of the Black Books relates to Heidegger's irritation with what he saw as a range of misinterpretations and misappropriations of his work. These include those who see Being and Time as derivative of Kierkegaard and Nietzsche as well as those who try to apply Heidegger's thought to contemporary philosophical issues. He is particularly hostile to Catholic theology, naming Romano Guardini as exemplifying what is wrong in such applications. The paper will explore Heidegger's antipathy in relation to Guardini's own theological-philosophical project with the aim of specifying just what Heidegger saw as the essential point at issue." Religion and Theology is produced by Joel Kuhlin for the Center for Theology and Religious Studies.
