[MEI Salon Series] Tradition within Modernism: Mosque Architecture under Singapore's Mosque Building Fund

mei-nus

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 4, 2024 72:05

Between 1977 and 1983, the first phase of Singapore's Mosque Building Fund (MBF) played a pivotal role in shaping the architectural and social evolution of local mosques. The MBF exemplifies the state's pragmatic governance and approach to secularism, balancing religious autonomy with social cohesion and urban development. Mosque construction during this period emerged from a collaborative process involving the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS), the Housing Development Board (HDB), and the Mosque Building Committee (JPM), ensuring mosque designs balanced religious needs with urban planning goals. Local mosque architecture reflects regional styles and cultural influences, with distinct Southeast Asian elements. Despite these design differences, the spiritual essence remains unified within the global umma (Muslim community). Traditional elements — such as domes, minarets, and arches — were reinterpreted through modernist ideas. These shifts align religious spaces with Singapore's urban development goals, while preserving Islamic identity within a multicultural context. The MBF mosques — such as Masjid Muhajirin (1977), Masjid Assyakirin (1978), and Masjid An-Nur (1980) — illustrate how these buildings evolved into multi-functional spaces. They serve not only as places of worship, but also as community hubs that accommodate education and social activities. This evolution reflects Singapore's unique approach to balancing religious expression with secular governance to foster social cohesion.

Greg Lopez, candidate for Colorado governor 2022 (Lopez2022.com) and past Director of the Small Business Administration Region VIII, is in studio with Kim.  America's Veterans Stories can be heard Sundays at 3pm and 10pm on KLZ 560 AM and KLZ 100.7 FM.  This week's Marine Veteran Manert Kennedy shares his story of the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir.  Greg believes the governor of the great state of Colorado must lead, and this includes speaking out against bills that the state legislature is passing that harms its residents.  The state legislature is circumventing TABOR (Colorado's Taxpayer Bill of Rights) with high taxes veiled as fees.  Policy is hurting our standard of living and our pocketbooks.  The Federal Government is printing money that leads to a lower standard of living and the burden of debt to future generations. Lorne Levy, mortgage specialist with Polygon Financial Group, speaks to the rise of inflation.  Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen, referenced that the Biden infrastructure plan may cause inflation, which sparked a negative reaction from the stock market.  Yellen then backtracks on her comments to counter the reaction.  However, inflation is clearly visible.  Mortgages can still be obtained in the 2% range.  Give Lorne a call at 303-880-8881 to discuss and get your loan prequalified.  Kim's Salon Series is back with a webinar Candid COVID Conversation.  Lakewood City Councilwoman Ramey Johnson and Kim will moderate panelists Dr. Jill Vecchio, Matt Durkin, Priscilla Rahn and Sue Kenfield on May 20th at 6pm.   Tickets will be available starting tomorrow. Kim and Greg discuss SB21-256 Local Regulation Of Firearms.  This state bill is a direct attack on the U.S.  Constitution and proves that state legislators do not understand our founding document.  The legislators also ignore the obvious.  The problem is not the gun but the person who is holding the gun; responsibility starts with the individual. Jason McBride, Senior Vice President with Presidential Wealth Management, refers to the U.S. Constitution as a document that does not need any additions.  Let it stand on its own.  With inflation creeping up and the cyberattack on Colonial Oil, it is important to evaluate your risk tolerance.  Give Jason a call at 303-694-1600 to review your financial portfolio and your comfort level to analyze if changes need to be made. Kim and Greg resume their discussion on SB21-256, a bill that goes after law abiding people who carry concealed firearms.  Greg stresses the importance of contacting state legislators regarding proposed bills and show up to testify in committee hearings.  America's government is supposed to be of the people, by the people and for the people.  Vote!  Insist on election integrity with your county clerk.  Greg explains how some counties process ballots and how vote tabulations are reported.  Without a doubt, we now know that every system can be hacked, with the Colonial Oil cyber attack as exhibit A.  Greg and Kim switch gears to talk about the Wuhan-China virus disruption and the experimental drug referred to as a vaccination.  Greg concludes the conversation stating that we must stand up and represent ourselves.  Do not lose heart or hope, and instead be bold and courageous for our American values.

Kim and Producer Steve begin with a discussion on reassessment notices on home values hitting mail boxes and the hidden tax increase in the notices.  The Salon Series is back with a webinar on May 20th at 6pm for a Candid COVID Conversation.  Dr. Jill Vecchio, Matt Durkin, Priscilla Rahn and Sue Kenfield will be panelists as Kim and Lakewood Councilwoman Ramey Johnson serve as moderators.  HB21-1162 Management Of Plastic Products calls for the ban on plastic bags and styro-foam containers.  North Carolina looks to implement their own Taxpayer's Bill of Rights (TABOR).  It is met with dishonest claims regarding Colorado's TABOR history. Jason McBride, Senior Vice President with Presidential Wealth Management, talks about the advantages to perform an annuity analysis for your financial portfolio.  Many people believe that annuities are complex and leave them out of financial strategies.  Jason highly recommends a no-cost meeting with him to schedule an annuity review of your annuity.  Give Jason a call at 303-694-1600. Guest Roger Hays, CEO/Founder of Premier Employer Services (premieremployerservices.com/), a consulting, compliance, payroll service and other HR functions for businesses, dissects what he considers the three worst state bills for employers.  First on his list is HB21-1232 Standardized Health Benefit Plan Colorado Option.  Costs will go up for healthcare.  The Insurance Commissioner, an appointment by the governor, will be able to “dictate” policy with immense power and control.   Second on the list is SB21-176 Protecting Opportunities and Workers' Rights Act.  This bill includes many different ways to define harassment which does not have to be pervasive but only a one off.  Costs to an employer can easily start between $40,000-$50,000 for defense.  Legislators are attacking small businesses that have been crippled the most due to COVID-19.  Roger finishes with SB21-197 Workers' Compensation Physician, a bill that will allow an injured worker to select their own doctor and can change at any time.  Colorado has a great worker compensation system and this will allow employees to “shop” for a doctor.  Unfortunately, many state legislators believe business owners are rich, greedy and evil instead of job creators, service and merchandise providers and individuals who care about their employees and their customers.

Candid COVID Conversation will feature Lakewood City Councilwoman Ramey Johnson and Kim as hosts. Panelists include Dr. Jill Vecchio explaining the virus, symptoms, treatments & the vaccine, Matt Durkin addressing COVID crime, Priscilla Rahn regarding the education of our kids and Sue Kenfield, expert on resiliency and mental well-being. HB21-1294 K-12 Education Accountability Systems Performance Audit is accurately assessed by Representative Larson who states that this is a “diversion of resources and … time.” We need to teach students the basics instead of using a clipboard to check off boxes, and get to the root of why scores are stagnant. The Democrat state legislators controlling the government are poised to never allow TABOR (Taxpayer's Bill of Rights) refunds as they work on financial “gymnastics.” Representative DeGette (CD-1) comes to the aid of the Homeless Industrial Complex as she works to pork barrel federal funds to her district to buy a hotel for the homeless. These federal funds do not really exist. Money is being printed and we are pledging the future of our kids and grandkids for the pork barrel spending. Jason McBride, Senior Vice President with Presidential Wealth Management, states that to defend against inflation is one of the toughest actions one can take. In the past gold was a hard asset to acquire but there is no longer a gold standard. Some are looking at cryptocurrency and Jason warns about its volatility and vulnerability. Give Jason a call at 303-694-1600 to review your financial portfolio and discuss strategy for future success. Helen and Kim discuss the Five Pillars of Prosperity presented by Dr. Art Laffer. Dr. Laffer is known as the “father of supply-side economics.” Laffer is an economist and past advisor to President Reagan. In 2016 he was an advisor along with Stephen Moore to President Trump. The Five Pillars are: (1) The Lower the Taxes the Better; (2) Stop Excess Spending; (3) Good Monetary Policy; (4) Less Federal Regulation and; (5) Free Trade. Some of the key points include taxation punishes people, Washington is out of control, freedom of choice brings responsibility to spending, excessive regulation limits freedom and prevents competition, and free and fair trade is essential for human flourishing and prosperity.

In 2011, almost 42 years of dictatorial rule came crashing down on Libya's Muammar el Qaddafi, as revolution swept across the country. Alsatoor (The Cleaver), a Libyan satirist in exile in the UK, had been criticising the regime for decades through his cartoons. Once Qaddafi fell, his work didn't stop there. Libya tumbled into chaos and civil war, while Alsatoor pushed on for political and social change until he passed away in 2016. Coinciding with the Libyan revolution's 10th anniversary, this event is a reflection of the life and works of Hasan ‘Alsatoor' Dhaimish (1955–2016), and an exploration of contemporary Libyan culture and history. Through satire and art spanning from the 1980s to 2016, attendees will experience Libya's transition from autocracy to liberation and civil war through Alastoor's work. Hosted by the artist's son, Mr Sherif Dhaimish, the talk will be aired from London and will be apart of the forthcoming exhibition, “Resistance, Rebellion & Revolution — A Libyan Artist in Exile”, Hoxton 253, and will feature some of the show's video installations and artworks. Mr Dhaimish will delve into his father's life in exile and his eclectic body of work — from depictions of pre-Qaddafi Libya, to satirical cartoons, and paintings inspired by blues and jazz — while offering an insight to Libya's modern history. To conclude, Mr Dhaimish will discuss the artist's legacy, and introduce a new wave of Libyan art that celebrates and preserves culture.

30 Oct 2020, 3.30pm to 5pm (SGT) Speaker: Charlene Winfred, Photographer, Singapore What comes to mind when you think of Iraq? Deserts? Bombs? Soldiers? Destruction? Over the last 50 years, Iraq has seen multiple wars ― the Iran–Iraq war, the first Gulf war, the US invasion, the war with the Islamic State ― and the devastation that comes with prolonged conflict. Millions of lives were lost, and millions were displaced. What does ordinary life look like when you're a refugee? Ms Winfred spent a year in Kurdistan, the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq, working for a small NGO helping refugees to rebuild their lives in the long shadow of war, and listening to the stories of many refugees. She was struck not only by how unimaginable these stories were to someone like her ― from safe, stable Singapore ― but unexpectedly, also by how much they resonated. These are stories most of us can identify with, no matter who we are, and where or how we live. What do people who have lived in conflict long for, just like those who live in peace?

Four seasons ago, Baltimore's Everyman Theater launched an initiative called the “Salon Series: Women's Voices,---- a program that explores the work of women playwrights in informal staged readings, directed by the women members of the Everyman Resident Acting Company. On Monday night, March 18, the new Salon Series season begins with ----What's Next?---- -- readings of the work of Washington-DC based playwright Caleen Sinnette Jennings, who is also a professor of theater at American University. Jennings is the author, recently, of two semi-autobiographical plays, Queens Girl in the World and Queens Girl in Africa, which will close out the Everyman season later this spring. The one-woman performances will be directed by Paige Hernandez, and feature first Dawn Ursula and then Erika Rose, in the play's solo role. The Everyman has commissioned a third play to round out the trilogy, called Queens Girl to the Green Mountains. That play will be performed at Everyman next season, but it’s one of the works-in-progress that will be part of the staged reading at Everyman on Monday night, with director Hernandez, and actors Ursula and Rose joining playwright Jennings in the Everyman Rehearsal Hall. Today, Caleen Sinnette Jennings joins Tom on the line from Washington to discuss the genesis of the Queens Girl plays, and the plawrighting craft she'll be spotlighting at Monday's Salon event.

The Indian born, New York City based artist Rina Banerjee has a love of materials, heritage textiles, fashion, colonial objects and furnishings, and historical architecture, due to their ability to disguise, animate, and locate their inherent meanings in her art work. She has said that her work explores "specific colonial moments that reinvent place and identity as complex diasporic experiences." Her preoccupation with the role of culture, mythology, fairy tales, anthropology, and ethnography fold into trajectories of race, exotic capital, and the forces of our migration-mobility, tourism, and global commerce. The tensions and desires created out of our individual, increased travel, and our access to information technologies, have perforated traditional boundaries, creating a malleability that reflects a globalized sense of space and a diminished experience of dominant culture paradigm. www.TheSanDiegoMuseumofArt.org Video produced by The Balboa Park Online Collaborative

Nationally recognized performer Andrew Dinwiddie re-enacts a sermon from Preacher Jimmy Swaggart. The performance, based on a now out-of-print-vinyl recording of Swaggart's 1971 speech in Arkansas, ironically attacks popular culture, especially show business, even though Swaggart is an iconic performer himself and is the cousin of rocker Jerry Lee Lewis. While Dinwiddie breathes new life into Swaggart's words, they inevitably mean something different to us then they would have originally 40 years ago. www.TheSanDiegoMuseumofArt.org Video produced by The Balboa Park Online Collaborative
