The Satanic Panic - a phenomenon of the 1980s and '90s - was a terrifying rollercoaster for all involved. Accusations of child sacrifice ruined lives as the public sought answers for why everyone suddenly seemed to have been victims of Satanists and Satanic rituals. Amplified by the Catholic Church, law enforcement and daytime TV, rumours of these cults made their way through fearful communities, creating a witch hunt for anyone believed to be part of alleged Satanic worship groups.At the centre of this conspiracy was a book called "Michelle Remembers," a memoir published in 1980 by Canadian psychiatrist Larry Pazder and his patient Michelle Smith in which Smith's recounted false memories where she was abducted and tortured by a satanic cult in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.The new documentary, "Satan Wants You," describes the experiences of the satanic panic, how the memoir (,Michelle Remembers,) sparked it, and exposes how a lie from a Canadian patient and doctor became an enduring myth. Few cultural phenomena of the 1980s were as as destructive or widespread as the Satanic Panic. The Satanic Panic led to arrests, ruined reputations, and more than 12,000 unsubstantiated reports of Satanic ritual abuse that were reportedly “recovered” via the now discredited practice of “recovery memory therapy.” While the Satanic Panic is now largely discussed with derision, there was a period in time when fear of devil worshippers was earnestly reported about on the nightly news – and Patient Zero for the Satanic Panic was a Vancouver Island woman named Michelle Smith. Michelle and her psychiatrist Dr. Lawrence Pazder collaborated together on a bestseller titled Michelle Remembers, which documented their unorthodox sessions in which Dr. Pazder used recovery-memory therapy to bring forth memories of Satanic ritual abuse. The wild story behind the book is detailed in Satan Wants You, the eye-opening documentary feature from Vancouver directors Steve J. Adams and Sean Horlor. A few weeks back we talked about 65. While we agreed it was an interesting idea, we were split about its prospects. As it turns out, it did not do so well at the box office. It's DIY aesthetics and punk attitude set the tone immediately. There are obvious influences to past cinema classics, but it is very much its own thing. This movie frustrated and angered us. So why did we spend so much time talking about how great it is?The Satanic Panic was a big part of our childhoods, so a documentary about it would only draw our attention more if it was banned in a country. Satan Wants You does not just focus on one story, it focuses on what started it all. It had all the makings of one of the most interesting things we watched this year.
