EA - Rethink Priorities' Digital Consciousness Project Announcement by Bob Fischer

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Rethink Priorities' Digital Consciousness Project Announcement, published by Bob Fischer on July 5, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. One of the core questions regarding the moral status of AI concerns their consciousness. Is there anything it's like to be them? Contemporary AI systems are widely regarded as clearly not conscious, but there seems to be growing concern among experts that we may see conscious AI systems in the not-too-distant future. Understanding our duties to the AI systems we create will involve assessing the nature of their minds, and thus their moral status. There are many important questions about AI minds that bear on their moral status, but whether they are consciousness has a clear and widely recognized role. In addition, it may be important in securing or denying AIs the public's moral consideration. Existing consciousness research revolves first and foremost around human beings. The physical bases (or neural correlates) of consciousness in humans remain uncertain. Leading proposals are both vague and highly controversial. Extending theories of consciousness to AIs will require careful thought about how to generalize beyond the human case. Alternatively, we might look to identify behavioral indicators of consciousness. Behavior has a much more salient role in swaying our attitudes than abstract considerations of architecture. But modern AIs are carefully trained to behave like us, and so it is not easy to tell whether their behaviors indicate anything beyond mimicry. Therefore, we see a variety of kinds of uncertainty at play: there is methodological uncertainty, uncertainty regarding the underpinnings of human consciousness, uncertainty regarding the significance of behavioral evidence, uncertainty about how AIs work, etc. Coming up with any concrete estimate of the probability of consciousness in AI systems will require mapping, measuring, and aggregating these uncertainties. Rethink Priorities has overcome similar challenges before. Our Moral Weight Project wrangled patchy evidence about behavioral traits and cognitive capacities across the animal kingdom through a Monte Carlo framework that output probabilistic estimates of welfare ranges for different species. We learned a lot from this work and we are eager to apply those lessons to a new challenge. We are now turning to the question of how best to assess the probability of AI consciousness. Over the coming months, we plan to carry out a project encompassing the following tasks: 1. Evaluating different modeling approaches to AI consciousness estimation. What different paradigms are worth exploring? What are the pros and cons of each? 2. Identifying some plausible proxies for consciousness to feed into these models. What are the challenges in pinning down values for these proxies? Where might future technical work be most fruitful? 3. Producing a prototype model that translates uncertainty about different sources of evidence into probability ranges for contemporary and hypothetical future AI models. Given our uncertainties, what should we conclude about the overall probability of consciousness? Having such a model is valuable in a few different ways. First, we can produce an overall estimate of the probability that a given system is conscious - an estimate that's informed by, rather than undermined by, our uncertainty about the correct theory of consciousness. Second, because the inputs to the process can be updated with new information as, say, new capabilities come online, we can readily update our overall estimate of the probability of consciousness. Third, because we can repeat this process based on the capabilities that were present at earlier dates, we can also model the historical rate of change in the probability of digital consciousness. In principle, we can use that to make...

Today, in Episode #221, 'Navigating the Digital Current: From Calculation to Digital Consciousness,' we dive deeper into the waters of the digital era. We've observed how the development of the Polaroid, with its magical blend of chemistry and light, served as a poignant allegory for human advancement. Now, we shift our gaze to the realm of calculation, where numbers, algorithms, and data not only shape our understanding of the world but begin to define the very essence of our reality. As we stand on the shores of this digital expanse, we'll explore how the transition from physical development to digital calculation has transformed every facet of our lives—from the way we communicate and create, to how we perceive identity and consciousness itself. What does it mean to live in a world where our experiences, memories, and even our emotions can be digitized, analyzed, and reimagined? How has the shift to digital calculation altered our relationship with the natural world, our societies, and with ourselves?Detlef Schlich is a podcaster, visual artist, filmmaker, ritual designer, and media archaeologist based in West Cork. Introduction: David Hundley is a Machine Learning Engineer who has been deeply involved with experimenting with Large Language Models (LLMs). Follow along on his twitter Key Insights & Discussions: Discoveries with LLMs: David recently explored a unique function of LLMs that acted as a 'dummy agent'. This function would prompt the LLM to search the internet for a current movie, bypassing its training limitations. David attempted to utilize this function to generate trivia questions, envisaging a trivia game powered by the LLM. However, he faced challenges in getting the agent to converge on the desired output. Parsing the LLM's responses into a structured output proved especially difficult. Autonomous Agents & AGI: David believes that AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) essentially comprises autonomous agents. The prospect of these agents executing commands directly on one's computer can be unnerving. However, when LLMs run code, they operate within a contained environment, ensuring safety. Perceptions of AI: There's a constant cycle of learning and revisiting motivations and goals in the realm of AI. David warns against anthropomorphizing LLMs, as they don't possess human motivations. He stresses that the math underpinning AI doesn't align with human emotions or motivations. Emergent Behavior & Consciousness: David postulates that everything in the universe sums up to a collective result. There's debate over whether living organisms possess true consciousness, and what it means for AGI. The concept of AGI emulating human intelligence is complex. The human psyche is shaped by countless historical experiences and stimuli. So, if AGI were to truly replicate human thought, it would require vast amounts of multimodal input. A challenging question raised is how one tests for consciousness in AGI. David believes that as we continue to push technological boundaries, our definition of consciousness will keep shifting. Rights & Ethics of AI: With advancing AI capabilities, the debate around the rights of AI entities intensifies. David also touches upon the topic of transhumanism, discussing the trajectory of the universe and the evolution of humans. He contemplates the potential paths of evolution, like physically merging with technology or digitizing our consciousness. AI's Impact on Coding & Jobs: David reflects on the early days of AI in coding. He acknowledges the transformative potential of AI in the field but remains unworried about AI taking over his job. Instead, he focuses on how AI can aid in problem-solving. He describes LLMs as "naive geniuses" - incredibly capable, yet still requiring guidance. Open Source & OpenAI: David discusses the concept of open source, emphasizing the transparency it offers in understanding the data and architecture behind AI models. He acknowledges OpenAI's significant role in the AI landscape and predicts that plugins like ChatGPT will bridge the gap to further automation. Math's Role in AI: The conversation delves into the importance of math in AI, with David detailing concepts like gradient descent and its role in building neural networks. David also touches on the evolution of AI models, comparing the capabilities of models with 70 billion parameters to those with 7 billion. He predicts that models with even more parameters, perhaps in the trillions, will emerge, further emulating human intelligence. Future Prospects & Speculations: David muses on the future trajectory of LLMs, drawing parallels with the evolution of AlphaGo to AlphaZero. The episode concludes with philosophical musings on the nature of consciousness and its implications on world religions.

Social media is all around us, and it's all-consuming. Whether you have one platform, multiple platforms, a Finsta, or you're managing it for brands, it is everywhere. Have you ever felt so inclined to take a step back or feel like you're in need of a little bit of detox? Taking time away from social media usage has become increasingly popular over the last few years, and much of this is actually stemming from younger generations. Gen Z and Millennials are really starting to lead the charge on responsible usage of social media platforms, from how many hours a day you're spending on platforms to even taking multiple days off, stepping away from the technology that we hold near and dear to us. One organization that is helping to lead the charge in growing awareness and social consciousness of how people are using these platforms is a group called the Log Off Movement, headed by our guest today, Emma Lembke.Emma is a 20-year-old youth digital advocate seeking to spread digital consciousness and integrate youth voices in conversations regarding tech. In addition to her advocacy efforts, Lembke is a third-year rising political science major at Washington University in St. Louis. She is the founder of Log Off, a youth movement founded in 2020 to uplift and empower youth to tackle the complexities of social media and its impact on younger generations. As a youth-led movement, Log Off provides an often overlooked and critical perspective on social media by leveraging and empowering the underrepresented experts in the field: Generation Z.Today, Emma and I talk all about the implications of social media usage, how going completely cold turkey online is not only unreasonable for a lot of people but unrealistic, and tools and tips that anyone and everyone can use to help build a safer, smarter, and more intentional relationship with social and digital media.Check out the Log Off Movement here.To connect with Hillary, click here. Read more about Digital HQ here. For more episodes, go to SOCIALCOMPLEXPOD.COMProduced by You Lucky Dog Productions.

Greetings, esteemed colleagues and scholars,I am pleased to announce the latest instalment of the Arteetude Podcast 191, wherein we embark on an interdisciplinary exploration of digital consciousness from the vantage point of visual artistry. This episode delves into the theoretical implications of uploading one's artistic consciousness into a digital realm, examining the nexus between art, technology, and philosophy. As a visual artist and researcher, I've endeavoured to approach this topic with both creative and scholarly rigour. The discourse raises pertinent questions about the evolution of art in the digital age, the preservation of artistic identity, and the potential avenues for future research in this domain.I invite you to lend your ears and insights to this academic exploration. The link to the podcast episode can be found in the comments below. Schlich, a multi-disciplinary artist, operates his podcast with a cross-sectoral approach, believing that a visual artist should think beyond being just an antagonist and instead strive to be a protagonist. Through this podcast, he dives into the unknown depths of the creative mind to uncover new perspectives and ideas.Detlef Schlich is a podcaster, visual artist, filmmaker, ritual designer, and media archaeologist based in West Cork. He is recognized for his seminal work, including a scholarly examination of the intersections between shamanism, art, and digital culture, as well as his acclaimed video installation, Transodin's Tragedy. He primarily works in performance, photography, painting, sound, installations, and film. In his work, he reflects on the human condition and uses the digital shaman's methodology as an alter ego to create artwork. His media archaeology is a conceptual and practical exercise in uncovering the unique aesthetic, cultural and political aspects of media in culture.WEBSITE LINKS Detlef SchlichInstagramDetlef Schlich ArTEEtude I love West Cork Artists FacebookDetlef Schlich I love West Cork Artists Group ArTEEtudeYouTube Channelsvisual PodcastArTEEtudeCute Alien TV official WebsiteArTEEtude Detlef Schlich Det Design Tribal Loop Download here for free Detlef Schlich´s Essay about the Cause and Effect of Shamanism, Art and Digital Culturehttps://www.researchgate.net/publication/303749640_Shamanism_Art_and_Digital_Culture_Cause_and_EffectSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/arteetude-a-podcast-with-artists-by-detlef-schlich/donations

EA - Implementational Considerations for Digital Consciousness by Derek Shiller

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Implementational Considerations for Digital Consciousness, published by Derek Shiller on August 2, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This post is a summary of my conclusions after a philosophical project investigating some aspects of computing architecture that might be relevant to assessing digital consciousness. I tried to approach the issues in a way that is useful to people with mainstream views and intuitions. Overall, I think that present-day implementational considerations should significantly reduce the probability most people assign to the possibility of conscious digital systems using current architectural and programming paradigms. The project was funded by the Long Term Future Fund. Key claims and synopses of the rationale for each: 1. Details of the implementation of computer systems may be important to how confident we are about their capacity for consciousness. Experts are unlikely to come to agree that a specific theory of consciousness is correct and epistemic humility demands that we keep an open mind. Some plausible theories will make consciousness dependent on aspects of implementation. The plausible implementational challenges to digital consciousness should influence our overall assessment of the likelihood of digital consciousness. 2. If computer systems are capable of consciousness, it is most likely that some theory of the nature of consciousness in the ballpark of functionalism is true. Brains and computers are composed of fundamentally different materials and operate at low levels in fundamentally different ways. Brains and computers share abstract functional organizations, but not their material composition. If we don't think that functional organizations play a critical role in assessing consciousness, we have little reason to think computers could be conscious. 3. A complete functionalist theory of consciousness needs two distinct components: 1) a theory of what organizations are required for consciousness and 2) a theory of what it takes to implement an organization. An organization is an abstract pattern - it can be treated as a set of relational claims between the states of a system's various parts. Whether a system implements an organization depends on what parts it has, what properties belong to those parts, and how those properties depend on each other over time. There are multiple ways of interpreting the parts and states of any given physical system. Even if we know what relational claims define an organization, we need to know how it is permissible to carve up a system to assess whether the system implements that organization. 4. There are hypothetical systems that can be interpreted as implementing the organization of a human brain that are intuitively very unlikely to be conscious. See examples in section 4. 5. To be plausible, functionalism should be supplemented with additional constraints related to the integrity of the entities that can populate functional organizations. Philosophers have discussed the need for such constraints and some possible candidates, but there has been little exploration of the details of those constraints or what they mean for hypothetical artificial systems. There are many different possible constraints that would help invalidate the application of functional organizations to problematic systems in different ways. The thread tying together different proposals is that functional implementation is constrained by the cohesiveness or integrity of a system's component parts that play the roles in the implementations of functional organizations. Integrity constraints are independently plausible. 6.) Several plausible constraints would prevent digital systems from being conscious even if they implemented the same functional organization as a human brain, supposing that they did so with current techni...

Elvidge's research has continued well beyond the simulation hypothesis to a true scientific foundation for digital consciousness theory. He lives in Santa Monica, CA. Book Digital Consciousness A transformative vision Jim Elvige joined me to talk about his book Digital Consciousness and the reality that are we are living in a matrix or simulated reality and these are the topics that i covered as far as proving that we are or are not in a matrix type existence - god gene programmed to worship something - spiritual experiences, shamans - dmt/psychedelic experiences do they show that we are in a matrix construct alot of people report seeing the machine elves - i heard Jim say we could get to the point where wer create other simulations that are indistinguishable from our current reality - could extraterrestrials and ufo's be a construct of a simulation and are they the actual real creatures that is maybe why we see them experimenting on humans, doing medical exams? - when Jim talked with Art Bell he brought up a good point that everything is in the perfect place for reality to happen like the sun is in the right place, everything we need on the earth is right where we need it to be, and why is it that we officially havent found another planet like ours we hear rumors but nothing official - artificial intelligence - mandella effect - time slips - dreams another reality - laws of physics occasionally we get glitches in the matrix - paranormal and parapsychology - law of attraction and our thoughts creating our reality - what did the ancients say our world was - tom campbell calls consciousness organized data which makes me think if reality is digital could everything already be predetermined and you can just figure it out or remote view things Jims Website is: Theuniversesolved.com For more of my interviews go to youtube.com/c/typicalskeptic and anchor.fm/typical-skeptic Also on spotify, apple, i tunes, stitcher, soundcloud, tune in, amazon music, and i heart radio To donate to my show: go to paypal and send donations to typicalskeptic1@gmail.com #Simulation #theory #consciousness #spirituality #podcast #MandelaEffect #TimeSlips #TimeTravel #DigitalConsciousness --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/typical-skeptic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/typical-skeptic/support

Author Jim Elvidge holds a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University. He has applied his training in the high-tech world as a leader in technology and enterprise management, including many years in executive roles for various companies, entrepreneurial ventures, and leadership consulting. Beyond the high-tech realm, however, Elvidge has years of experience as a science researcher, keeping pace with the latest in the varied fields of quantum physics, cosmology, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and metaphysical anomalies. This unique knowledge base provided the foundation for his critically acclaimed 2008 book, “The Universe-Solved!,” which, for the first time, presented the astounding evidence that our reality may be under programmed control. Now, nine years later, scientists, technologists, and futurists all over the world are jumping on the simulation bandwagon, speculating that our reality is a digital simulation. Elvidge's research and theory, however, has continued well beyond the simulation hypothesis and incorporated powerful ideas around consciousness, cultural synchronicities, quantum anomalies, and a true scientific foundation for digital consciousness theory. This true theory of everything is presented in his second book “Digital Consciousness.” www.theuniversesolved.com Our radio shows archives and programming include: A Different Perspective with Kevin Randle; Alien Cosmic Expo Lecture Series; Alien Worlds Radio Show; Connecting with Coincidence with Dr. Bernard Beitman, MD; Dick Tracy; Dimension X; Exploring Tomorrow Radio Show; Flash Gordon; Jet Jungle Radio Show; Journey Into Space; Know the Name with Sharon Lynn Wyeth; Lux Radio Theatre - Classic Old Time Radio; Mission Evolution with Gwilda Wiyaka; Paranormal StakeOut with Larry Lawson; Ray Bradbury - Tales Of The Bizarre; Sci Fi Radio Show; Seek Reality with Roberta Grimes; Space Patrol; Stairway to Heaven with Gwilda Wiyaka; The 'X' Zone Radio Show with Rob McConnell; and many other! Tenille Bentley is an internationally award winning conscious business woman, board director, a sound scientist and global change agent. She is a transformative speaker, educator as well as an author of two thought provoking books “Digital Consciousness and Emotional literacy for kids” and the Managing Director & Founder of The Emotional Literacy & Mindfulness Academy for Kids. She has been described as a contemporary thought leader, building a multi million dollar social media company in under 2 years, she has been recognised by the Australian Prime Minister with ‘The Australian Leadership Award’ which is only presented to 20 people in Australia, she was awarded the ‘Australian Financial Review Top 100 Australia’s Women of Influence’, State Finalist in the ‘Telstra Business Woman of the Year’, inducted into the Western Australian Women’s Hall of Fame by The Governor and awarded the Top 3 Australian Institute of Management Excellence Awards. She founded The Emotional Literacy & Mindfulness Academy for Kids a global program that is teaching kids advanced skills in emotional intelligence from the ages of 5 – 9 years old. She began from a position of looking at the world, the damage we, as a human family are causing, the chaos, the violence, the fast paced dopamine overdosed world of digital and how we are seeing our kids (our future caretakers of this planet) being handed all of this. When you take a look at the world it can be overwhelming to try and figure out where does one start with undoing this mess we created? Her answer was with children, aligning this with her love of neuroscience and the proven outcomes of early intervention. This formed the basis of The Emotional Literacy and Mindfulness Academy for Kids. Specifically focusing on ages 5 – 9 as the key developmental phase where we can make the biggest impact and imprint them with essential life skills and behaviours that assist them later in life, which in turn, will assist our home that is crying out for our help….our planet earth. She has had the pleasure of meeting and spending time with the great minds of Oprah, Richard Branson, Deepak Chopra, Dr John Demartini, Don Miguel Ruiz, Dr Bruce Lipton and many more. Tenille consistently challenges her level of conscious and subconscious awareness, delving deep into philosophy, mythology, human behaviour, quantum physics, neuroplasticity and neuroscience in her spare time.
