In this episode of The Anti-Macro Podcast, I delve into the complex world of Multi-Level Marketing (MLMs) with my guest Jill, a dedicated researcher and podcaster whose show, "Opportunity Cost," uncovers the inner workings of MLMs through interviews and in-depth research. We start by defining MLMs and exploring why they are often considered schemes, providing background information for those of you who may be unfamiliar with the topic. We discuss the allure of MLMs as a side hustle and how to identify when someone is being recruited by one, including alternative terms used by MLMs and bait-and-switch tactics. Furthermore, we address the importance of understanding MLMs and why consumers should care about their predatory nature. From capitalizing on clients' weaknesses to the lack of product standards, MLMs present significant concerns for consumers. In the health and fitness space, MLMs are prevalent, and we highlight some examples and the products or services they offer. We specifically focus on health MLMs and question the trustworthiness and efficacy of their supplements, discussing issues such as proprietary blends and legal cases. Moreover, we touch on the qualifications of MLM distributors, emphasizing the risks of receiving health advice from unqualified sources. We also shed light on the questionable tactics used by MLMs and their distributors, including bogus claims and the manipulation of transformation photos. SHOW NOTES: In this show, get expert advice on creating a simple landscaping plan to transform your outdoor space, maximizing your deck's potential by installing an under-deck drainage system, and cleaning delicate window shades without risking damage. Plus, stay tuned for answers to more home improvement questions to create your best home ever! Window Shades: Get tips on how to clean delicate window shades without damaging them. Underdeck Drainage: Add dry, usable outdoor space with an underdeck drainage system. Landscaping: Design a stunningly simple landscaping plan for your home, lifestyle, and budget. Q & A: Driveway Repair: Water is pooling in sunken areas of the driveway. Joe can use a blacktop patching product and then reseal the whole surface. Moisture: To reduce moisture building up on interior walls, Laura should run the A/C consistently, direct bathroom and kitchen vents outside, improve exterior drainage, and install a whole-house dehumidifier. Creaky Floor: Kevin's floor is creaking under the tiles. He gets info on how to find the movement from the basement and use shims to tap into the floor gaps from underneath. Noisy Pipes: There's a loud banging in the basement whenever the water is used. Nicole learns it may be water hammer or the well pump going on and off. Electrical Wiring: Jay's electrician said he could just split the circuits and use an arc fault breaker instead of replacing all the old wiring. We confirm that's excellent advice. Roofing: Should Tina remove the old roof shingles before installing a metal roof? We agree it's a bad idea to leave the shingles because of the heat factor. Concrete Stains: Is there a way for Garland to remove battery acid stains on his garage floor? We recommend covering the garage floor with epoxy paint. Wall Paint: Diane wants advice on applying a Venetian plaster effect to her walls. It's a unique look that may take practice and we suggest using it on a focal wall. Sump Pump: Bob has questions about a sump pump that runs through the carport. He should install a check valve so water can't back up and a curtain drain to direct the water. Social media impostors of sports reporters are a real challenge for the sports media ecosystem. The trend has been egged on by changes made to X, formerly known as Twitter, under Elon Musk. Front Office Sports senior reporter AJ Perez investigates the phenomenon, which has become a thorn in the sides of reporters like Adam Schefter and Adrian Wojnarowski. Plus, amateurism in college sports may effectively be over, a Nevada group looking to block the funding the state is providing to the Oakland A's plots their next legal move, and we explore the world of professional women's ultimate frisbee.
This week is all about the challenges of low-impact building in the sphere of self build with Tara Fraser, a chartered civil and structural engineer, and a director of Build Collective in Bristol. On the recommendation of former guest (and Tara's colleague) Beth Williams, we recently had a chat with her about a self-build project she worked on that should find itself into the pages of Passive House Plus magazine, and we thought it'd be interesting to explore it, and a few broader themes, for the podcast too. This is because in green building it's the self-builders who have been the pioneers, which intrigued us to wonder what lessons might be taken from the self-build experience that can be used by other builders. It's pretty nerdy this one, but don't worry if you get lost on some of the detail, that's fine, it'll pass, and we return to the common ZAP themes pretty quickly.Notes from the showTara on LinkedInThe Build Collective websiteTara's colleague, Beth Williams, on the podcast last year**SOME SELF-PROMOTING CALLS TO ACTION**We don't actually earn anything from this, and it's quite a lot of work, so we have to promote the day jobs.Follow us on the Zero Ambitions LinkedIn pageJeff, Alex, and Dan about websites, branding, and communications - zap@eiux.agency; Everything is User ExperienceSubscribe and advertise with Passive House Plus (UK edition here too)Check Lloyd's Substack: Carbon UpfrontJoin ACANJoin the AECB Join the IGBCCheck out Her Own Space, the renovation and retrofit platform for women (but not in a patronizing way)**END OF SELF-PROMOTING CALLS TO ACTION**
Part two of our series on shading, this time with a return appearance from Tom Dollard of Pollard Thomas Edwards who joined us in January 2023 to talk about lazy thinking. Ostensibly, this time we met to talk about the Good Homes Alliance design guide for shading, as a follow-up to December's episode with Zoe De Grussa. On reflection we realised that the guide does a good enough job without us disecting it, so we spent more time discussing why such a guide is necessary, how the industry needs to change, and why it's struggling to do so (culture, economics, and politics…the usual).Content warning: it is a very rambling episode but in spite of its very loose sense of direction the conversation does cover a lot. The warning is just because we only really talk about shading 20 minutes in, so heads-up if you read this before you start listening. Also, it's a very UK-heavy discussion because those were the conditions in which the research was created, but they're pretty-much analogous for a great deal of Ireland, North America, and probably great swathes of Europe too. Please check the link below, download the PDF, read it, and share it - it's a brilliant piece of work.Notes from the showTom on LinkedInThe Pollard Thomas Edwards websiteShading for housing: Design guide for a changing climate, published by the Good Homes Alliance in collaboration with the BBSA**SOME SELF-PROMOTING CALLS TO ACTION**We don't actually earn anything from this, and it's quite a lot of work, so we have to promote the day jobs.Follow us on the Zero Ambitions LinkedIn pageJeff, Alex, and Dan about websites, branding, and communications - zap@eiux.agency; Everything is User ExperienceSubscribe and advertise with Passive House Plus (UK edition here too)Check Lloyd's Substack: Carbon UpfrontJoin ACANJoin the AECB Join the IGBCCheck out Her Own Space, the renovation and retrofit platform for women (but not in a patronizing way)**END OF SELF-PROMOTING CALLS TO ACTION**
It's all about shading, overheating, and solar gain with Zoe De Grussa this week. She's the author of that infamous Camden overheating case study that Jeff always references and, at the time of writing, is technical and sustainability consultant at the British Blind and Shutter Association (BBSA).We cover Camden, but perhaps more interesting is the conversation around the difficulties in modeling shading, and the consequent difficulty in communicating its value to a project. Despite shading measures being 3-4 times cheaper to install at the point of a building's origination, rather than retrofitting it when there's a problem, it's all too often one of the first things value-engineered out of the specification.Notes from the showZoe on LinkedInThe BBSA websiteThe Home Energy Modeling ConsultationZoe's infamous academic paper: Overheating Camden Case Study. In the world of business, decisions can range from risky to downright shady. The line between the two blurs, especially in industries like oil, gas, petrochemicals, and plastic production. Land acquisition and permits for pollution resulting from the gruesome history of racial segregation and government-sponsored redlining often raise ethical questions. In this episode of 'All Eyes On The Gulf,' the first episode of season four of The People over Plastic podcast, we dive deep into these murky waters. Our environmental reporter Alexis Young, connects with courageous environmental activists across the Gulf region, from Texas to Louisiana, unveiling the shady dealings in the oil and gas industry. Prepare to hear the unfiltered truths from those on the frontlines. We're honored to feature voices like 2023 Goldman Prize Winner, Diane Wilson, who's taken on multi-billion dollar Formosa Plastic. Joining Alexis are also resilient community members, like Dr. Joy Banner, Co-Founder of the Descendants Project, Josette Cruz from Brownsville, Texas, and Shamyra Lavigne of Rise St. James, daughter of the 2022 Goldman Prize Winner, Sharon Lavigne. Tune in for a powerful conversation between co-hosts Alexis Young and Shilpi Chhotray, shedding light on the shady decisions that impact our communities. SHOW NOTES: Pet-Friendly Backyard: Enjoy the outdoors with your furry friends by creating a pet-friendly backyard. UV Sun Damage: Find out how to defend your floors and furnishings against damaging sunlight. Staining a Fence: Learn the best way to spruce up your fence for maximum curb appeal. Plus, answers to your home improvement questions. Installing a Ceiling Fan: James wants to add ceiling fans in rooms with no overhead lighting. It's not hard, but it's an easier job for an electrician to do. Kitchen Flooring: Patrilla would like new kitchen flooring to install over sheet linoleum. Engineered vinyl plank or laminate are beautiful and durable options. Insulation: An attic with minimal fiberglass insulation needs more. Albert finds out spray foam insulation is an excellent choice that expands, seals, and has a much better R-value. Old Plumbing: When one shower is used, another one goes cold. Tammy needs a plumber to check the old steel pipes and the water pressure from the street. Wood Floor Care: Old pine and oak wood floors are hard to clean and protect. We advise Margaret to use a natural cleaner that won't damage the wood. Matching Paint Colors: Dante hasn't been able to match the color of a repainted area in a small room. It's easier to prime and repaint the whole wall. Leaking HVAC System: Leah's split ductless HVAC system is leaking freon. She needs to find the source of the leak instead of adding more refrigerant. Water in Garage: Water running downhill is coming into Butch's garage. He should build a curtain drain and pitch it away from the garage to divert the water. Leaking Roof: A roof leak is probably coming through a pipe from Judy's bathroom. Replacing the flashing around the pipe should be an easy fix. Do you have a home improvement or decor question? We get into online business and there's tons of celebrity entrepreneurs and influencers who have convinced us that it's super easy. "Just follow me, and you're going to be making your money back right away." And also, they say you should be investing every dime you make right back into your business, otherwise, you're asking way too much of your business. We've just accepted this is standard business practice in the online world, and these are some lies that we've bought into that need to stop. You are a business person putting value and usefulness out into the world. There's a lot of not cool business practices in the online world that we would never accept in the old, traditional brick and mortar world. Online business started off with some shady shit. And now we have a lot of solidly good people who have replicated a lot of that shady shit. There is a lot of upfront work for long-term payoff, and that payoff might take a while. I have a great episode for you all today! My guest, Andrea Ellis, is going to tell her story of building a very profitable integrative health coaching business and deciding to shut it all down after "seeing behind the curtain". She explains how her chronic health condition led her to feel unserved by conventional medicine which led her to seek alternative health solutions and sparked her to become a health coach herself. She describes the training that she went through to be "qualified" to start running labs and the experiences that led her to realize that much of the functional medicine space was built on misinformation and hypocrisy. This is going to be an eye opening episode for so many people! If you want to follow Andrea, you can find her instagram here.
