Anyone with money faces a dilemma right now. Where do you invest it? Historically it's been quite simple. If you are prepared to take risks, buy shares. If you want to play it safe, buy government bonds because, although the returns can be quite slim, you know major economies, like the US, will always repay their debt. But now bonds aren't such a safe choice. Last week Donald Trump did a u-turn on his highest tariff levels because US government bonds were being sold off, pushing up the interest the government has to pay to attract buyers. In short, the cost of servicing debt was sky-rocketing for the US government. It was a pivotal moment. Simon French, Chief Economist and Head of Research at Panmure Liberu, describes how there's less confidence in US net now and investors are looking to Europe as a safer place to see a return on their investments. Donald Trump wants big tariffs on US imports, and the countries affected are threatening retaliation - it's the beginning of a trade war, with China, Canada, Mexico, the EU and others weighing in. So how does Britain ride this out? Can Keir Starmer's government find ways not to get caught in the crossfire, and maybe even benefit from not being high on Donald Trump's target list? Or do we need to get onside with the non-US nations in this fight for the future of global commerce? Simon French, chief economist and head of research at Panmure Liberum, takes Phil and Roger through the UK's options Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Hard times and hard choices, but the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, seems determined to inflict pain on consumers, taxpayers and businesses in the short term, to plug what she says is a £40bn hole in the nation's finances. But does she need to? And is she going to hit the right targets, given that she has boxed herself in by committing not to raise income tax, VAT or National Insurance on employees? And is recalculating national debt by taking into account assets a sensible way of allowing her to borrow more - without spooking lenders? Jeremy Hunt delivered his Autumn statement this week, with 110 policy measures. The most significant of those was a 2% cut in National Insurance contributions. Roger and Phil ask Simon French, Chief Economist and Head of Research at UK investment bank, Panmure Gordon, whether the main aim of the cuts was to bolster the chances of a win for the Conservatives at the next election? On this week's podcast Simon says that, political cynicism aside, there is a need to boost growth in the economy, and administering cuts in tax through National Insurance ensures that it is the working population that benefits. But will it make that much difference, when those same people face higher tax contributions through the freezing of the income tax thresholds? A wide-ranging discussion that includes the need for more comprehensive tax reform, plus a snapshot on the economic wellbeing of Phil's barber. Hosted on Acast. Why is the UK trailing the rest of the developed economies when it comes to growth and the post-Covid recovery? Why is our inflation higher, our investment lower, and our prospects gloomier? Is it poor leadership, or just the nature of an economy too slow to adapt to the modern world? Or is it just Brexit? Simon French, managing editor, chief economist and head of research at Panmure Gordon, tells Phil and Roger where it has gone wrong for UK PLC, and what needs to happen to reverse that.Brought to you by Wigmore Associates Wealth Management Hosted on Acast. Whilst it has been difficult to decipher amidst the noisy pessimism, the UK economy has in fact been on a steady upgrade cycle throughout 2023. Having bottomed out in November 2022 in seeing a prolonged recession throughout 2023, June saw economist consensus move to forecasting a UK output expansion of +0.1% for 2023. We believe there are still modest upgrades to come over the near-term to close in our growth forecast of +0.4% for the year. However, UK-focused investors can be forgiven for growing concerns that this good news is in the rear-view mirror and recent upward shifts to interest rate expectations are more relevant to the growth outlook. These higher interest rates will sharply increase the nominal hurdle rate to undertake property transactions, capital investment, and the costs of refinancing existing activities. In this note we appraise the domestic economic outlook and update our output growth forecasts - downgrading our outlook for 2024 and 2025. The risk of policy mistake from an overtightening of UK monetary policy has grown in likelihood over the last three months and, whilst it is not all the Bank of England's fault, outcome matters more than attribution.
After the Bank of England raised interest rates to 5%, Ian King analyses the impact on mortgage customers with Simon French from Panmure Gordon and Polly Gilbert, managing director of mortgage broker Tembo. There's a focus on female owned business with Winnie Chiu, president of Dorsett Hospitality International, and on women in engineering with Dr Hayaatun Sillem, Chief Executive of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering & Royal Academy of Engineering.Ian's also in conversation with former Apprentice star Susie Ma, about why she took full control of her Tropic Skincare business – after buying out Lord Sugar's 50% stake. Ian's also joined by Neil Wright, managing director of TensCare, to talk about expanding its services from providing pain relief for women in childcare.
So what's the big battleground likely to be at the next election, above stopping the boats and even the NHS? It's the economy stupid, in the immortal words of Bill Clinton. Sky-high inflation rates mean our money's not going as far as it used to as wage increases are outstripped by rising prices and we're all having to cut back, with many families in the North now really struggling. But is there an end in sight now for the UK's economic pain - and will people living in the North see the same kind of recovery as those in London and the South East? As a wider point, are the efforts by the Government to level up and tackle regional inequalities having any impact on the economic prospects of towns, cities and villages in our region? We've got a great expert guest to answer those questions and more in the shape of Simon French, the chief economist of Panmure Gordon, an investment bank with a big office in Leeds. And Rob Parsons speaks to Charlotte Nichols, Labour MP for Warrington South, about her tumultuous time in Parliament so far, battling post-traumatic stress disorder and why being a politician at Westminster is like no other job. *** Don't forget you can now watch the best interviews from The Northern Agenda podcast on YouTube - check out our playlist at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzE0rXt9oGq2nfc3VHw-Pzx1tttiLpP6z *** The Northern Agenda is a Laudable production for Reach. What can we expect from the MPC this Thursday? What do we think of windfall tax, is the UK on course for Recession, and how are the Sunak & Truss bandwagons getting on? David & Michael are joined by Simon French from Panmure Gordon.
The Tory party leadership challenge is down to two players – Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss. Sunak wants to keep taxes where they are, preaching fiscal conservatism, and fearing releasing more money into people's pockets will only add to inflation, which is already at 9.4 percent. Truss wants to help people navigate the cost-of-living crisis, by reversing the recent hikes in national insurance. So which approach is right in the current economic climate? It's a question Phil and Roger put to Simon French, Chief Economist at Panmure Gordon & Co. He's no stranger to the workings of government, after a dozen years at the Department of Work and Pensions and The Cabinet Office. Is he prepared to tell us who he'd like to see inside Number 10? While six years have elapsed since the Brexit vote, the point at which all things changed was 31 January 2020, right in the middle of Covid, so it is difficult to gauge the full effect. IGTV's Jeremy Naylor caught up with Simon French, managing director and chief economist at Panmure Gordon. Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) chief inspector Simon French joins NCE senior reporter Catherine Kennedy to discuss the final report into the fatal Carmont derailment in August 2020. The accident occurred after a passenger train collided with debris washed from a drain onto the track following very heavy rainfall. Tragically three people died and the remaining six people on the train were injured. French reflects on the key learnings from the report, which found that a drainage system and associated earthworks constructed by Carillion had not been built in accordance with the original design and so were not able to safely accommodate the water flows on the morning of the derailment. He considers the importance of change management and the challenges posed by extreme weather, before reflecting back on how the rail industry has changed and improved since the RAIB was first set up. He also reflects on what the industry still needs to address in terms of improving safety and fully embracing a safety culture going forward. The Engineers Collective is powered by Bentley Systems.
