To celebrate 2024, we're taking a look backwards, and diving into the standout thinkers who have taken to the Intelligence Squared stage in the past 12 months. You might still be on the hunt for that perfect gift for the avid reader in your life, or perhaps you're after some food for thought over the festive period. Either way, this 12 episode mini series will highlight the books that shaped 2024. We hope you'll join us in 2025 for more events that intrigue, fascinate and entertain. In recent years the benefits of eating a diet rich in plants have increasingly been at the forefront of our conversations about food. You may have heard scientists like Tim Spector, the founder of ZOE, argue that a healthy diet should consist of 30 plants a week. This recommendation comes from a study led by Spector for the British and American Gut Project in 2019. It showed that people who ate more than 30 plants a week had the healthiest microbiomes and the best health outcomes, while those who didn't had worse health outcomes. That science has informed the cooking of chef and founder of River Cottage Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall ever since it was published. And in May 2024 he came to the Intelligence Squared stage where he was in conversation with ZOE's Dr Federica Amati to argue that getting 30 different plants on our plate every week is easier than you might think. Together they addressed some of the big questions around plant-based eating: to what extent can eating plants really help us avoid disease? How realistic is it for the average person to get 30 different plants every week? And is there a risk of overstating what plants can do for our health? To skaidro Māris Zunde.
In the 1930s the style known as "jazz manouche" took over France and soon spread around the world, led by musicians like the legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt and the violinist Stephane Grappelli. That hot swinging style, a combination of American jazz elements and more traditional Romani music, has endured for almost a century. Over the past four decades that has been in part because of Dorado Schmitt, the French musician who plays both the violin and the guitar. In what is now a family affair, Schmitt leads the band on violin, joined by his sons Amati and Samson Schmitt on guitar, cousins on upright bass, and rhythm guitar, and Ludovic Beier on accordion, all of whom trade fiery solos, in-studio. Set list: 1. Miro Django 2. Piazza Italia 3. El Dorado 4. The Light of God

As adults, food shopping can be a minefield. But when it comes to feeding your kids, the stakes are even higher. Our food environment is rife with misinformation. Brightly coloured labels on packaged, often ultra-processed foods promise high protein, high fibre and low calories. The additives, emulsifiers and mountains of added sugar are hidden in the small print. So how can parents navigate this confusing landscape? Today, we hear from two of the UK's most-trusted nutritionists (and both parents of small children) on how to keep your kids eating well. Rhiannon Lambert has authored four books, including recent Sunday Times bestseller The Science of Plant-Based Nutrition. Half a million people follow her for nutrition advice on Instagram. ZOE's Head Nutritionist, Imperial College London lecturer and bestselling author of Every Body Should Know This, Dr. Federica Amati, joins Rhiannon for today's conversation.
Dr. Federica Amati is a nutrition scientist and public health expert, with a passion for helping individuals understand the impact of their food choices. In this episode, she chats with Jake and Damian about her new book Everybody Should Know This, which dives deep into the fundamentals of food and its role in maintaining good health. Throughout their conversation, Dr. Federica reveals the inspiration behind her book and the powerful message it conveys. She explores the concept of metabolic flexibility and how it can be achieved through simple dietary changes. She also emphasises the importance of whole grains and fruits, discussing how these foods can boost longevity and overall health, while also offering tips to enhance metabolic well-being. Dr Federica addresses how the food industry often prioritises profit over health, highlighting the importance of being mindful about what we consume. She expands on the critical "first thousand days" of life, explaining how early nutrition shapes long-term health, and warns against the dangers of ultra-processed foods, especially for younger people. This episode is packed with actionable insights, covering topics from boosting metabolic flexibility to enhancing sleep quality through nutrition.

Tim is scientific co-founder of ZOE and professor of epidemiology at King's College London. This is the second instalment of a two-part conversation. Hugh also shared his people-pleasing plant-based recipes, as well as some plant pairings with meat or fish, from his new book How To Eat 30 Plants a Week. We are sponsored by Indeed.
