At a very young age, Mary learned that the food on her plate was actually the body of a dead animal. She refused to eat it and declared herself a vegetarian. She grew up never knowing another vegetarian and thinking that she was weird. When she grew older and learned that animals were hurt to produce dairy products and eggs, she went Vegan.Yoga showed up many years later. As her practice developed she felt the call to teach but even louder was the call to teach veganism. During her 500-hour teacher training, she was given the task of presenting to the class an aspect of yoga that was “in her pocket." She knew that she had to do a talk on Veganism but in the past any time she started to talk about the animals she’d get a huge lump in her throat and shut down. She had just started working with a teacher named Ramana who helped her find her voice. For her talk, she used Sharon Gannon’s book ”Yoga and Vegetarianism” as the blueprint. She started teaching for a studio, Breathe Yoga as well as being hired by Dr. Ted Barnett to teach at Rochester Lifestyle Medicine, where she learned the health benefits of a vegan diet from some of the best doctors in the world. She also had the opportunity to teach for Dr. Thomas Campbell in his lifestyle medicine practice.Mary was elected Vice President of a local animal rights nonprofit for three years, co-founded Rochester’s wildly popular VegFest, and founded our local chapter of Anonymous for the Voiceless, a nonprofit that brings the terrible truth of animal suffering to people on the street. One fateful day, Mary came across a news story about a cow who had escaped a slaughterhouse who was now living at a sanctuary in New Jersey. A few months later she traveled to NJ to meet that cow, Freddie and Mike Stura, the man who rescued him. Freddie inspired her to design a T-shirt with his image. When she opened the Rochester Vegan Community Center his handsome face was their logo. A couple of years ago Mike asked her to move to Skylands. She did and now helps take care of Freddie and the other kids that live at the sanctuary. Jamie Surya (she/her/hers) began her journey of Yoga as a teenager looking for a way to ease the pain that inevitably comes with life. Initially drawn to meditation and yogic philosophy, her asana and pranayama practice soon followed. In 2012 at the age of 20 she opened up the Jamie Surya Yoga Studio in Sparkill, NY to share the teachings that had so strongly influenced her.She soon realized the importance of gentle and adaptive yoga but was surprised how infrequently it was offered and discussed. This led Jamie to further her studies in anatomy, physiology, injuries, and alignment with the support of Andres Alves, PT, DPT, RYT. Jamie and Andres were the first to bring the LoveYourBrain Yoga Program to New York State, where they facilitate group discussions and adapt asana, pranayama, and meditation for individuals who have experienced traumatic brain injuries and their caregivers. In working with licensed mental health counselor Hayley O’Brien, M.A, LPC, RYT, Jamie deepened her studies further and learned how to adapt elements of the practice and studio space to be trauma sensitive and suitable for individuals who are experiencing depression, anxiety, substance abuse, eating disorders, PTSD, and other sources of trauma. As a lululemon Athletica alumni ambassador, Jamie creates and facilitates community events raising awareness and support for multiple organizations both locally and globally. In 2015, she was nominated and selected from ambassadors around the world to attend the Annual Ambassador Summit in Whistler, BC.As an animal lover and justice seeker her whole life, human and non-human animal rights are at the forefront of Jamie’s community work. After learning of the animal abuse, environmental damage, and health impacts that result from using animals as food, clothing, and products, she set her lifelong habits and traditions aside and became vegan. Her inner yoga practice bloomed as a result of finally aligning her actions with her values and she continues to use her voice and her heart when advocating for all animals and humans alike.Jamie co-created the community organization Together Vegan Change, a support system for local vegans and a resource for those interested in veganism. TVC organizes various community events, workshops, and forms of activism in the New York/New Jersey area. A proud supporter of her community’s local non-profits The Rockland County Pride Center and Center for Safety and Change, Jamie believes in the freedom and equality of all races, orientations, genders, and species, and will forever fight for the end of oppression for all.Topics discussed in this episode:Catering the Jaime Surya Yoga Studio to meet the needs of the community. A weekend filled of Pax! An event more for the people Pax West is here with more than we expected. The big studios and the big titels can be found on the floor to try out but when it comes to news, the smaller studios take a step forward. Borderlands 3 was the biggest title at Pax West and delivered news about the end game content for the game. Its nice to se an event where a lot of indie games are shown even if you don't like every title. A few titles we found interesting where Airborn kingdom, Prehistoric kingdom, Astroneer, Black Skylands and Stela.
Mike Stura is a Mechanic, Welder and Harley Davidson guy. He's not your typical vegan but Mike owns and runs Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue in New Jersey. Mike started Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue with one tiny piece of land and a few small animals. That tiny piece of land grew to become an entire farm full of rescued souls. These animals are rescued from slaughterhouses, live markets, farms, extreme neglect, abuse, religious ceremonies, abandonment, and are even found wandering streets… No matter where they are from or from what dire circumstances they escape, they are provided with proper veterinary care, the best foods, water, a safe place to live, eat and sleep as well as lots of love around the clock. Every animal requires room to run and live unencumbered by the threat of harm and each one gets exactly what they need at the Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue. To help the animals and Mike at Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue donate by going to skylandssanctuary.org/donate-2!

The Silver Tail, the ancient foe of the Skylands, Earth and the Waterworld, has broken free from the Gates of Condemnation. Though liberated he is without his power. To regain his supremacy, he must retrieve the one who sealed him away in Hell, the ivory Calf. Still too weak to search for the being, Normacco, his loyal minion goes in his stead. While on the hunt for the ivory beast, he encounters those that wish to stop him: a dead man, a Fire Sol and an old Queen Meviathum called Red. The Second of the Seven Desolations of the Tatum Scrolls has come to pass. The weight of the Call of prophecy upon Red proves to be more than she can handle. Already she has lost her clan to the hand of Normacco, the servant of the Silver Tail. Now her power is threatened to be stolen by him as well. How can she battle the Silver Tail when she cannot defeat his servant? Is she truly the one Jehovah has chosen to face the Silver Tail as the Nazarite proclaimed her to be? Toys For Games 'Cast - Collecting, playing with, and discussing toys-to-life
For Episode 106, we couldn’t even think about recording until the big meeting in Activision HQ took place, as the fate of the Skylanders franchise hung in the balance. Once the dust settled, however, we jumped right in, bringing not only the Skylanders update, but every other bit of news from the toys-to-life genre, to the show for you, the listening audience. Skylands may be in trouble, but Toys For Games is not! We kick off the show discussing Jason’s globetrotting plans (what’s new), and his birthday, which just so happens to be celebrated by the holiday of love as well. When we get to the news, we start off with a recap of the Disney Infinity community game nights, before discussing the release of LEGO Dimensions Wave 7.5. Then we chat about some amiibo, and invite a couple of special guests on - in the middle of the show, without any warning! From there, we gush about the handcrafted Space Eagle from Beasts of Balance. Finally, we break down the big Skylanders news from Activision’s investor’s meeting today, and what it possibly means for the fate of the franchise. In the back half of the episode, we read through all the tweets for the #CommunityQuestion, and pick a winner for the #ResponseOfTheWeek giveaway. Finally, we wrap up with several great emails from the great folks in the community, doing our best to answer all questions thrown our way! If you marry the worlds of the X-Men School for the Gifted, and Harry Potter with a Futurama sense of humor, you'd have Skylanders Academy. I was treated to a special screening of the first two episodes of this show recently at The London in West Hollywood and had a wonderful interview with cast members Ashley Tisdale (Stealth Elf), Harland Williams (Hugo) and showrunner Eric Rogers (Futurama). Skylanders Academy is an animated action-comedy series that follows the heroic adventures of the Skylanders team, a ragtag group of heroes with unique elemental skills who travel the vast Skylands universe, protecting it from evil-doers. They achieve victory by setting aside their egos, learning to trust one another and fighting as one to maintain harmony and balance in the land. Led by showrunner Eric Rogers (Futurama), the series features the voices of Justin Long (Ask Me Anything) as Spyro, Ashley Tisdale (High School Musical, Phineas and Ferb) as Stealth Elf, Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) as Eruptor and Norm MacDonald (Saturday Night Live) as Glumshanks, and Harland Williams (Superstar, Dumb and Dumber) as Hugo. Additional voice talent includes Susan Sarandon, Daniel Wu, Parker Posey, James Hetfield, Catherine O’Hara, and Chris Diamantopoulos. How's that for a line up? My first impression of this show is that the story is not like anything I've ever seen before in kids animation. Eric created the world based on the very popular Activision Blizzard video game and it's AB's first foray into creating an animated series based on their games. Skylanders requires toy action figures to play the game and has made $3 billion dollars in revenue proving the franchise's popularity. Now Activision Blizzard Studios and Netflix are hoping that popularity translates into an animated series. So much so, it's already been given the green light for a second season. And I can tell you I don't think they'll have any troubling finding an audience for this show. With the rise in popularity of superhero movies and of course the hugely successful world of Harry Potter, I think kids and parents will find this show to be a great addition to their Saturday morning cartoon line-up. Eric tells me he hopes the humor will appeal to both parents and kids and based off of what I saw, he nailed it. I loved having the chance to get to know Ashley Tisdale better and talk to her about her role on this show. She plays a very strong female character called Stealth Elf and I have a feeling we'll see a lot of kids dressed up like her at the next Comic Con or next Halloween. Ashley also tells me she gets asked all the time when she's going to have kids but says she's in no rush. She says she's focusing on producing and other projects right now and doesn't feel any pressure to start a family just yet. My hope is that she'll come back on my show when she does! She also gives some hints about her plans to release more music so make sure you listen to the interview. Heather with Harland Williams (Hugo) and showrunner Eric Rogers (Futurama) Harland Williams plays Hugo and he was cracking me up during our interview. He's also no stranger to the voice over world having been just voiced a character for the raunchy film Sausage Party among other shows. He also shares some info about his new show with Disney called Puppy Dog Pals which is due out next year. And he has a very funny podcast called The Harland Highway which is available on iTunes. Skylanders Academy is a wonderful family show that will expand your child's imagination and teach them about teamwork and friendship. Take a look at this preview and see for yourself. Skylanders Academy will be available on Netflix on October 28th. If you'd like to hear my interviews with Ashley, Harland and Eric you can listen at the player on the top of this article, or on iTunes. And don't forget to subscribe to Motherhood in Hollywood and leave a review!

If there is a podcast that is better at going off the rails quicker and more often than the Toys For Games ‘Cast, we’d love to know, because Episode 89 is one for the record books! With the first official day of Fall, ‘tis the season for new releases, including Season 2 of LEGO Dimensions right around the corner. Despite trying to steer the show right into the side of the mountain before we even got going - because, you know, mascots - we had a bunch of news to cover this week. First, we talked about the Monster Hunter amiibo and the mysterious Bayonetta amiibo tease. Then we broke down the upcoming Season 2 of LEGO Dimensions, including the newly announced Wave 7.5. Over in Skylands, we ran through tons of random news, leaks, and tidbits about Imaginators. Finally, we praised the continued efforts of Lightseekers to officially join the toys-to-life genre. We then broke down the #CommunityQuestion and awarded a listener a cool prize for having the Response of the Week. Then we tried to stump the expert with a trivia question submitted by the community for the Inquire This! segment. Finally, we wrapped up the show with some fantastic emails, including a first-hand report from EGX! All this, and more, only in Episode 89! Executive Producers: Jorge Torres! Despite a slow news week, Josh and Jason do their best to put on yet another great and entertaining episode of the World’s #1 Toys-To-Life podcast. Once they get down to the nitty gritty, they chat about Australia possibly being the gateway to Skylands, the missed opportunities with the Light FX Star Wars figures, childhood memories of Pokemon, and the lessons to be learned in LegoLand. The #CommunityQuestion is cleverly ties in to Back To The Future day, and a new trivia-based segment is introduced, called “Stump The Expert”, where fans and listeners can win some cool prizes while challenging Jason’s knowledge of the toys-to-life franchises. Be sure to listen in and find out how YOU can participate! Also, some more great emails from the community, as always. Thank you all for the love and support! Happy hunting, collectors!
