Just before midnight on the 6th of December 1994, Elisabeth Membrey arrived home from her shift at the Manhattan Hotel in Melbourne. Police estimated that by 3AM, she was dead, concluding she'd been murdered in her hallway. 16 years later, in 2010, after a tireless investigation, former Detective Tim Peck was able to finally make an arrest. But, as the case went to court - it soon turned from a successful investigation to Tim tragically spiralling into a dark and near fatal place. Tim sat down with host Brent Sanders to talk about this case, and the dark consequences of policing. For more of Tim's story, his book The Invisible Obvious is out now. Many factors influence the transition to parenthood, and most of those things are unexpected and unpredictable. No one “signs up for” a perinatal mental health condition, but it can seem to come out of nowhere and leave you blindsided–in addition to the normal adjustments that come with the addition of a new baby to the family. These PNMH conditions can impact every area of life significantly, including the return to work. Join me for a closer look at navigating this tricky transition. Show Highlights: New parents experience varied emotions about returning to work (“It's okay to want to return to work, and it's okay not to want to return to work!) The truth: If you return to work when you're not mentally well, the added stress of work will not help you get better. Your healthcare provider can do assessments of your perinatal mental health symptoms–just ASK! Planning ahead for the return to work can help you navigate the transition. My best tips for returning to work: Try to navigate your return slowly, and don't take on big, new projects right away. Pace yourself and give yourself space to figure out your changing needs. Understand that your priorities might have shifted by having a new baby. (Things might not feel “normal” for a while.) Be intentional and think about how you'll balance work and home. Set boundaries and protect your energy. Prioritize your sleep! Resources: Please find resources in English and Spanish at Postpartum Support International, or by phone/text at 1-800-944-4773. There are many free resources, like online support groups, peer mentors, a specialist provider directory, and perinatal mental health training for therapists, physicians, nurses, doulas, and anyone who wants to better support people for whom they provide services. My guest for this episode is Jane Springer, who's been on the podcast several times before. Jane is a life coach specializing in health and wellness for women ages 50+. We talk about what a chronic physical or mental health condition is, how to manage your condition during the stress of a job search, and how to make sure you find a job that can accommodate your specific health needs. I often get questions about when and how to divulge information about a physical or mental condition during the job search. According to the Society for Human Resource Management's website: “The Americans with Disabilities Act defines disability as a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity. Disabilities outlined by the ADA include (but are in no way limited to) deafness, blindness, non-functioning or missing limbs, cancer, diabetes, asthma, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, arthritis, obsessive-compulsive disorder, HIV and depression. “Under the ADA, employers generally can't ask disability-related questions, such as whether the applicant has a disability or what the nature or severity of the disability is, or require applicants to undergo medical examinations until after the applicant has received a conditional job offer.“Once a conditional job offer has been made, the employer may ask disability-related questions or require a medical examination so long as all individuals who receive offers for the same job are treated similarly. That means they must be asked the same questions or required to undergo the same medical examination, she said. (Once an individual is employed, disability-related questions and examinations again are prohibited except in limited circumstances.)“Employers may, however, ask applicants whether they can perform the essential duties of a position with or without accommodation.“Federal law also permits employers to ask applicants about reasonable accommodations before a conditional offer is made if the employer reasonably believes that the applicant may need an accommodation due to an obvious or voluntarily disclosed disability, or when an applicant has disclosed a need for an accommodation.” A best practice is for employers to thoroughly describe the steps the candidate will go through, so the candidate can intelligently respond as to whether they will need accommodations. If you don't need accommodations to perform the job, you are under no obligation to voluntarily disclose a disability or condition. You may choose to disclose anyway – but you don't have to. You can find Jane Springer at jane@janespringer.com or visit her website at janespringer.com.
Ep. 78 Join Coach Kelly Marie as she confronts her anxiety around the thought of taking her bike out for a ride for the first time in over a year. This powerful episode holds nothing back as she deals with the emotional and physical stress associated with her anxiety. Learn how to implement the tools and ask for the help you need. My doctor cleared me to ride my bike after back surgery, but my anxiety has kept me from going on a ride around the block! I'm physically healthy enough to take a bike ride, but mentally I'm paralyzed. It's time to implement the tools. Step one is acknowledging the symptoms. Anxiety, the body's response to stress, is how your body alerts you to threats and helps you get ready to deal with them. The autonomic nervous system produces your fight-or-flight response, which is designed to help you defend yourself or run away from danger. When you are under stress or anxious, this system kicks into action, and physical symptoms can appear — headaches, nausea, shortness of breath, shakiness, or stomach pain. Few things can derail your life, like sexual trauma. It can trigger an onslaught of physical and emotional symptoms, making functioning at work and in relationships difficult. Tragically, it's all too prevalent in the military. Studies show that 33% of female veterans and nearly 2% of male veterans screened positive for military sexual trauma (MST). This means that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 50 men respond “yes” to experiencing MST when screened by their VA provider. Yet the military's power structure often discourages people from reporting MST and getting the help they need. They worry that their superiors may not believe them or that there will be retribution. There is hope and help for survivors of MST. While the military still has a long way to go, they are working to make it easier for survivors to report sexual trauma. And regardless of whether the survivors reported the trauma directly after the event, the military is opening up more ways for survivors to qualify for the help they need. If you are a survivor of military sexual trauma, it's time to stop suffering in silence. Out of fairness to yourself and those around you, it's time to claim the VA benefits you are legally entitled to for what you suffered and put yourself on the path to recovery. Let's dive in! Ep. 77 Advocating for yourself is an important step in taking control of your well-being. It's one of the tools in the self-care toolbox you can use. In this episode, Kelly Marie gives you her top 10 self-advocacy steps and discusses the ways she used many of them to help her manage her mobility issues, spinal surgery and recovery. Remember, advocating for your health is an ongoing process. Stay proactive, stay informed, and stay engaged in your own journey. Educate Yourself: Learn about your medical condition or concern. Understand the symptoms, treatments, and potential alternatives. Research reputable sources, consult medical professionals, and join support groups or online communities to gather information and insights. Clearly Communicate: When discussing your health with healthcare providers, be clear and concise about your symptoms, concerns, and questions. Describe your symptoms in detail, provide a comprehensive medical history, and express any worries or doubts you may have. Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask questions about your health condition, treatment options, potential side effects, and recovery process. Seek clarification if something is unclear. Asking questions helps you gain a better understanding of your situation and empowers you to make informed decisions. *Pro tip: Use your phone's notetaking feature to jot down questions. You'll always have them with you when you see your health professional. Build a Supportive Healthcare Team: Choose healthcare providers who listen to your concerns and respect your input. A supportive team includes doctors, nurses, specialists, and other professionals who collaborate with you to make decisions about your health. If you feel unheard or dismissed, consider seeking a second opinion. Keep Records: Maintain organized records of your medical history, including test results, diagnoses, treatments, and medications. This documentation will help you track your progress, communicate effectively with healthcare providers, and have a comprehensive overview of your health. *Pro tip: see #3 Be Proactive: Take an active role in your healthcare. Stay informed about new research, treatments, or alternative therapies related to your condition. Advocate for preventative measures and screenings. Seek Second Opinions: If you receive a significant diagnosis or face a complex medical decision, don't hesitate to seek a second opinion. Another perspective can provide valuable insights and confirm the best course of action. Engage in Shared Decision-Making: Collaborate with your healthcare team in making decisions about your health. Share your preferences, values, and concerns, and work together to develop a treatment plan that aligns with your goals and lifestyle. Understand Your Rights: Familiarize yourself with your rights as a patient. Research laws and regulations related to healthcare, privacy, and informed consent. Knowing your rights will help you advocate for yourself effectively. Adult acne is no different from the acne that we usually associate with our teen years. It can also occur in adulthood, and it's extremely common. Typically, when we think of a pimple, people think of a raised, pink and inflamed bump, but that's just one type. “Acne” is a broad term that includes pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, pustules and more severe acne, like nodulocystic acne.If you're like a lot of women, you thought all you had to do was get through puberty and you'd be rewarded with smooth, clear skin. So it's a real blow when you're way past braces and school dances but still find yourself battling your skin. If this sounds like you, you're not alone — acne isn't strictly a teenaged plague. Adults can get it too, and women tend to have adult acne more than men.About Our Guest:Yug Varma, PhD, is the Cofounder & CEO of Phyla, the world's mostadvanced probiotic acne system. He has 10+ years of microbiome research experience including an extensive background in bio-organic chemistry, microbiology, and synthetic biology. It is essential in overcoming our mental illness that we have hope. Hope may be the only thing you have to hold onto. Hope will push you to try harder and do better. It is essential to develop healthy relationships with individuals who have a mutual respect for one another and the best interest of one another. In some case ulterior motives present themselves and true agendas come to the surface. It is usually during challenging times you come to really know the value another has for your friendship. It's easy to be a friend when all is seemingly well and life feels right. However, it is another story when the storms of life come and you need your friend to stand by you; or validate your feelings; reciprocate the support you have given to them or make a sacrifice for you. If you know a friend would not, do for you what you would graciously do for them, stop extending yourself. You will be devastated in the end and possibly suffer a long term depressive episode. Depressed individuals must take extra care and concern because their emotions are delicate and fragile. You must surround yourself with friends who are trying to understand your depression and are still willing to cope with your tough times, support and love you; but also encourage and lift you up. You need friends who will roll with the hard times and embrace you just the same."Giving Up Is NEVER an Option.'Support the showhttps://www.winoverdepression.orghttps://www.patreon.com/tameratrotterhttps://www.stitcher.com/podcast/tameras-podcast
Ep. 71 See DBT: Dialectical Behavior Therapy in action! DBT is a therapy used to treat people with Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, and Generalized Anxiety. DBT helps to reprogram your brain by focusing on today and making better decisions based on the information at hand. It also helps with emotional regulation, which is something I have been working on. DBT can be used at any point to help me practice mindfulness, manage my emotions and respond to a situation. It is not just one thing. It's a method of processing information and developing tools that work best for me. To help with this, I have been using a workbook that helps me unpack events that provoke a strong emotional response. The worksheets help me identify the why's of my feelings without judgement allowing me a safe place to develop healthier reactions. In this episode, you will learn the following: The importance of having a guide to assist with understanding emotional regulation. What "tools" look like and how to implement DBT techniques. Ep. 70 Discover the power of emotional regulation to build better relationships with yourself and others with DBT: Dialectical Behavior Therapy. DBT is a therapy used to treat people with Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, and Generalized Anxiety. DBT helps to reprogram your brain by focusing on today and making better decisions based on the information at hand. It also helps with emotional regulation, which is something I have been working on. "Giving yourself that time to pause, to do that mental work, may take time to get to that place. Many folks are quick to respond, quick to have that instantaneous reaction in that 5 seconds to pause. Pausing saves lives and relationships, and we're all about building better relationships." To help with this, I have been using a workbook that helps to break down emotions into different buckets, and to identify the emotions associated with traumatic events or with life in general. It helps me to pause and think before reacting, and it gives me a way to process the emotions I'm feeling. In this episode, you will learn the following: What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy and how can it help with mental health conditions? How can understanding emotions help reprogram the brain and build better relationships with yourself? What is the process of emotional regulation and how can it help with trauma recovery? Ep. 69 What's the difference between a mental health condition and a mental illness? A mental health illness has to be diagnosed by a licensed mental health professional or other medical professional. A person cannot diagnose themselves with a mental illness. However, a mental health condition is really any moment in time that someone is dealing with the effects of lower mental health status. One in five Americans will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime. This includes things like grief, bouts of sadness. Examples of mental health illnesses that I personally have been diagnosed with include major depression and bipolar disorder. The great thing is that healing is possible and anyone can begin their recovery journey when they're ready. The violence started after a family feud over the ownership of the home left behind by the late father of the suspect. Elvis Presslin spoke to SABC News reporter, Rudzani Tshivhase.

In this honest and eye opening discussion we talk about when Jackie first started to realise she had a mental health condition, how she came to understand it, being hospitalised (sometimes involuntarily), the incredible support she received from her husband and the role that ECT played in her recovery. Jackie continues to live and thrive with a mental health condition and I can most definately say that we have never told a story quite like Jackie's before.

Mental Health Condition of your Employees When one of your direct reports has the courage to talk with you about their mental health condition, how you respond is critical. You want the person to know you appreciate them sharing while also reassuring them that their job and your perception of them are not at risk. At the same time, you need to figure out what impact, if any, this will have on your team and their workload. What do you say right away? What questions do you ask? How do you decide what accommodations, if any, to make? Therefore, how you handle these interactions is critical. The good news is that these can be productive conversations, as long as you follow a few pieces of advice. · Thank them for telling you. Start off by acknowledging the effort it took for the employee to tell you. If nothing else happens in the first conversation, be sure to thank the person for sharing, But don't make it a big deal. Your goal should be to normalize the topic as much as possible. · Listen. Give the person space to say what they want to say and tell you what they need in terms of flexibility or accommodations. Listen actively with an open mind and without judgment. Pay attention to your nonverbal cues. · Tell them you want to support them — but don't overpromise. It can be tempting to tell the person (especially if they're a high performer) that you'll do whatever it takes to support them, but you want to tread carefully. It may be that they're just telling you as an FYI, and they don't need you to make any adjustments to their workload or schedule. Don't make assumptions. · Don't make it about you. It's possible that you or someone you're close with has been through something similar, but don't focus the conversation on you. Keep in mind that “everyone is different in terms of how their condition shows up. My anxiety is different from another person's anxiety,” · Maintain confidentiality. Reassure the employee that you will make every effort to honor confidentiality but that you may need to speak with HR. In some cases, the employee may give you permission or even ask you to let others know. · Consider what changes you can make. There is a variety of things that your employee may want or need so that they can take care of their mental health. These might include keeping different hours, working alone or in a group, taking time off to see a doctor, or having occasional “mental health” days. · Ask for help from others. This person came to you because you're their manager. “It's not your role to be their therapist, doctor, or lawyer,” says Greenwood. Don't offer health or legal advice. And don't try to figure this out on your own. · Refer them to other resources, if available. There may be other resources inside your company that you can refer them to. You can also direct them to any mental health benefits that your company offers, such as therapy or meditation apps. · Make yourself “tell-able”. Ideally, we'd all work for a manager whom we felt comfortable talking to when we needed help balancing work with our mental health. Unfortunately, that's not always the case. But you can make it more likely that people will come to you by being a role model. What is your recipe for listening more? Do you ever catch yourself not being present? Gallo, A. (2021, February). When Your Employee Discloses a Mental Health Condition. Harvard Business Review.
