We loved this novel set in 1920s NYC because it reminds us that we are human beings first and foremost. We talked about how women in the financial world, especially, were seen as the weaker, less intelligent sex, even though they had the right to vote. A woman stockbroker? Shocking! We talked about the family dynamics at play in this story - a mother who thought her son could do no wrong, a father and brother who encouraged our protagonist, Bea, at a time when nobody else did. We talked about anti Semitism and prejudice in all its forms. We also talked about risk and how Bea always went back to her core values when assessing it. The roaring 20s were a time of Ponzi Schemes, change, opportunity ... and profound loss when the stock market crashed in 1929. Silverio Tucci is an Italian punk rock musician and Socialist. I discovered his band, Lumpen, via Attila the Stockbroker and became an instant fan. I learned that his family members were partisans. For anyone not in the know, that means they were the people who literally fought the nazis in their communities in Italy during WWII. They're not mentioned much in history, but they were there, and when it was a fair fight, they usually won. I consider their story proof that at the end of the day love, community, and compassion triumphs over hate, fear, and bigotry. A reminder I think we could all use right about now. There are some barriers in this episode which is why it's a bit shorter. I'm limited in my Italian and Silverio is limited in his English, and we also had some connectivity issues. But we both navigate the waters and find common ground between our mutual love for music, family, art and solidarity. Also, this episode ends with a reflection on the current state of affairs.

When it comes to our finances, it's natural for many to follow the traditional approach to investing by using a stock broker. Over the past couple of decades, however, there has been a growing trend to go against the grain and not use a stockbroker. You may have seen the commercials online by companies urging you to bypass stock brokers by investing in their online platforms; they show curves of net worth over the course of decades, suggesting that when one takes compound interest into account, all the fees one pays to a stock broker can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in the long run? So what does the math show? Is using a stock broker actually detrimental to one's overall earnings in the stock market? Or despite the higher fees, does the stock broker bring an added intangible value? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

What are the three different types of financial advisors? Why do I believe a fee-only financial advisor is the best? If you're considering hiring a financial advisor for the first time—or questioning if your current advisor has your best interests at heart—don't miss this one. It's part 2 of my series in which I'm covering some of the topics in my upcoming book, “Fiduciary: How to Find, Hire, and Establish a Trusted Partnership with a Fee-Only Advisor.” The goal is to help my listeners find a financial advisor that they can trust. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... [2:09] Type #1: A stockbroker or insurance broker [4:43] Type #2: Registered investment advisor [7:32] Type #3: A fee-only investment advisor  [9:11] The three types of fee-only financial advisors  [11:43] The three ways fee-only financial advisors are compensated [15:58] What's being covered in episode #3 in this series Type #1: A Stockbroker or Insurance Broker The first type of advisor is a broker (stockbroker or insurance broker). They're compensated via commissions (the old-school way of doing business) and paid per transaction. The more transactions they make, the more turnover, and the more commissions they make.  Brokers are incentivized to change client's portfolios—even if it's not in their client's best interest. They're also obligated to do what's best for their brokerage firm (to make them more money).  That's why most financial advisors have moved away from the broker model. If you need to buy insurance, a stock, or a bond and you know this person isn't a financial advisor, it's fine to work with them—just don't expect objective advice.  Type #2: Registered Investment Advisor and Broker A Registered Investment Advisor is someone who's registered with the state they do business in or the SEC as an investment adviser representative of a firm. They work with clients on a fee basis. However, these financial advisors are also licensed as a stockbroker/insurance broker. Because brokers don't have to disclose these conflicts of interest (currently), you don't know if they're acting as a broker or fee-only financial advisor.  Type #3: A Fee-Only Investment Advisor  A fee-only investment advisor is only compensated by the fees their clients pay them. They do not have a broker or insurance license. This is the best option for working with a financial advisor.  You know when you ask them a question, there will be no conflicts and they will be acting in your best interest. How do I know? Because a registered investment advisor has a legal obligation to put a client's interest ahead of their own and must disclose any conflicts of interest.  There are typically three types of fee-only financial advisors: Fee-only financial advisors that only do financial planning (retirement planning, business planning, estate planning, etc.). You take their advice and implement their recommendations on your own. They don't manage any client portfolios.  Fee-only financial advisors that only do investment management. They provide investment advice and manage your portfolio. They do not do financial planning.  Fee-only financial advisors that offer both financial planning and investment management (known as a wealth advisor). Myself and my firm fall into this category. How are fee-only financial advisors compensated?  Hourly: Typically those who aren't managing portfolios Flat Fee: This could be for ongoing investment management or project-based Assets Under Management (AUM) model: You'll be charged a percentage of your overall assets (the standard is 1%) for annual ongoing wealth management that includes financial planning. When you make more money, your financial advisor makes more money because their fee is tied to the value of your portfolio.  How do you know which option is the best for you? It came up some in Episode 27 with Attila the Stockbroker. Well, I decided why not talk to someone who wrote a book on the topic. Chris Lee, among other things, is other of The Defiant: A History of Football Against Fascism. He dives into that history not just in Italy but other countries as well. This episode is almost more like a history lesson than an interview, and I mean that in a good way.

"The Adventure of the Stockbroker's Clerk" by Arthur Conan Doyle, narrated by Jack Carmichael. “Human nature is a strange mixture, Watson. You see that even a villain and murderer can inspire such affection that his brother turns to suicide when he learns that his neck is forfeited." Content warning (and SPOILER ALERT!): This story contains a fairy graphic depiction of a suicide attempt by hanging. It occurs about halfway through the story. This episode is narrated by Jack Carmichael. Jack is a Kent-based Voice Over Artist/Actor and a graduate of East 15 Acting School. His personal career highlights so far include performing at Edinburgh Fringe with the comedy/puppet show "Ronnie and the Other World", puppeteering for the BBC Radio 4 Podcast "The Infinite Monkey Cage" and starring as DAX in the award-winning, sci-fi/comedy podcast "We Fix Space Junk". Jack also plays acoustic guitar, sings bass and is an amateur beat-boxer. Throughout this interview, he recalls being heckled by nazis in the early 80s, seeing Black Flag's first London show, his role in organizing his local progressive football club...If you like punk rock, left-wing politics, you're not gonna want to miss a minute of this. When I was in Edinburgh in 2023, sadly Attila and I had shows at the exact same time, but he had one deviation in his schedule so I was able to catch his show.
