UnYielded is all about thriving through the toughest possible situations life can possibly throw at us. And my guest today is someone who chose to thrive through an unimaginable tragedy. Scarlett Lewis, an advocate for social and emotional learning (SEL) and character development, and the founder of the nonprofit Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement, joins us today to talk about her story of losing his 6-years-old son in one of the worst mass shootings in U.S history and how she chose to become part of the solution to prevent tragic events like that bu nurturing our children to have essential life skills that help them thoughtfully react to difficult situations.Scarlett's Story – On 14th December 2012, Scarlett lost her son, Jesse, to one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. Jesse was six years old at the time, and it was later revealed that Jesse's actions in the last few minutes of his life saved the lives of several classmates. Scarlett opens up about what it feels like to experience something like this and how the pain and shock of this tragic loss led her to be part of the solution to the underlying problem that causes these types of tragedies.Social and Emotional Learning – When Scarlett started her research of finding ways to stop extremely aggressive behaviors such as mass shootings, she stumbled upon social and emotional learning, which helps kids build essential life skills. We talk about what scientific research tells us about the effectiveness of social and emotional learning and how Scarlett's program helps children develop these essential life skills.Nurturing, Healing, and Love – Scarlett walks us through the formula she uses in her programs the lead us to thoughtfully responding with love in any situation, circumstance, or interaction we will ever face. We also talk about her book, “Nurturing Healing Love: A Mother's Journey of Hope and Forgiveness,” in which she talks about her learnings from the first six months of her journey.Forgiveness – When thinking about a terrible crime like a mass shooting at an elementary school, forgiveness is usually not a very popular concept. But according to Scarlett, forgiveness is what helped her cut that attached her to pain. We talk about how we can choose to forgive in order to take our personal power back.Brave Breath and Brave Pose – Scarlett shares with us two technics we can practice in our lives that help us thoughtfully respond to tough situations and the scientific background behind the techniques. Your career, your body of scholarly work, is independent of any ‘container’ through which you do that work, like a university or institution. Have you ever thought about this idea? It’s important! We often look at our career paths in terms of a certain ‘container’. We make choices based on things like which grad school has a reputation that will position us well in our fields, which institutions provide pre-tenure opportunities, etc. Much of the conversation about career paths gets steered toward what the ‘container’ wants: how do I get tenure here? Or full? If you pause to reflect, you might realize you are contorting yourself and your work to fit the needs of your current container. I want to flip the script and encourage you to look at your career differently. I’m going to give you some examples to help you see that you are not the container. You do not have to accept the container you’re in, and doing so is not the only way in which to advance your work. There are several ways to make change for yourself and your work: Work to effect change for yourself inside the container you’re in Change containers Create your own container Sarah Dobson’s Story On the podcast this past summer we ran a series of interviews highlighting the unique paths that womxn take to and through academia. One guest, Sarah Dobson, is a perfect example of how the work can be done through all kinds of different containers. (If you haven’t heard her episode, I encourage you to go back and take a listen, it’s fantastic!) Sarah has continued to put her work into the world through a variety of containers: academic institutions, public health nonprofits, and now her own business, doing grant consulting to help others in the field get funding. She continues to influence and add to the body of work in her field of public health through all these different kinds of containers. An Amplify Client’s Story A client in our Amplify pre-tenure program is another great example. She was running an entire graduate program by herself: doing all the admitting, advising and managing for all the students in the program. Her university made no allowances in pay or time to balance this, and she was nearing burn out. After coaching and support inside the group, she decided to go on the market. She got a better job, with higher pay and fewer responsibilities. She felt more appreciated and avoided total burnout. She stayed in academia, but changed her container to one that fit better. “You don’t have to settle.” My Stories Early in my career, I discovered that part of the job I had been hired to do was not working out at all like I had intended. (High level integration of technology into the educational English learning setting ended up being more like low level IT support.) This was not ok with me, and I couldn’t imagine living out my career this way. I negotiated with my department, and was able to change that part of my job. I always looked for ways to mold my job to the ways I wanted to experience it, by finding research and grant releases for example. “Can I change this? Can I make this better?” Later in my career, big changes in my institution itself turned it into a place that was not fun to work at anymore. I did some self reflection, working through a process we now use in our Elevate program, to find my zone of genius. I asked myself what I really loved in my work, and how I wanted to put my work into the world. The final result was this business I am running now to coach other academic womxn. I created my own container, and continue to joyfully put my work into the world! For more examples of how academic womxn use different containers to do their work, check out the interviews from the summer session of the podcast, episodes 34 through 43. Elevate Applications are open now! Our 6-month intensive program for post tenure women who are ready to up-level their careers on their own terms is only running one time in 2021: February-July. Imagine going to work today, a normal day, and then suddenly you are in the hospital for 7 months and your life is never the same again. That is what happened to Erin in his twenties when he was working on remodeling a Victorian home that caught on fire, while he was inside. He went from being a capable twenty something twenties to having 80% of his body burned and being completely dependent on others for a long time. BUT. There is always a “but” to great stories. Erin didn't let that define the rest of his life. On this week's podcast episode, Erin shares his story and how his business was actually birthed from that experience. Separated from her brother at childhood, Libby shares her journey of supporting her brother to create a great life. Enjoy this conversation with Libby Ellis, sibling, and founder of In Charge, a consulting organization in western Australia that is assisting people with disabilities to be the authors and champions of their own lives. About Libby Ellis: Libby works for a vivid vision of inclusion. She has walked many steps with her brother, Matthew, and for 20 years she has assisted others in taking front stage in their own lives. She supports people through the experiences, lessons, successes, and failures in self-direction over an extended period. Libby’s vision is to bring a personalized, heart understanding of what it takes to be in charge. Libby lives in Sydney, Australia with her husband, Sebastian. Libby’s Story: On the podcast, Libby shares her family experience. This blog captures a summary of her story; I recommend that you listen to the podcast to get the full version! Libby lives in Sydney, Australia and has two brothers. A younger brother James and older brother Mathew (who has a disability). She is married to Sebastian (who is Canadian). Matthew moved out of the family home when he was just nine years old. He moved into a medium-sized institution, where about 15 other people lived. Later on, the institution got broken up into smaller group homes. When her parents asked for help, that was the solution. For many families, this is still the proposed solution. Libby started to realize these injustices that Mathew was faced with when she was in her mid to late teens. Matthew’s experience was a trigger for her rights based / social justice thinking. Libby was transformed through love and witnessing Matthews experiences in a disabled world. She saw his pain, vulnerability, powerlessness, and lack of control. Libby’s family helped Matthew move out of the group home when he was 26. Her childhood experience was one of separation from her brother and trying to understand why it had to be that way. How did the separation from your brother impact you? Libby: “I started to ask why? It has led me on my path, and in my career to date. It has taken me to a lot of lessons and experiences that I have experienced over the last 25 years of my career.” Can you share Matthew’s experience of separation? Paraphrasing from the podcast, Libby shares: “Matthew doesn’t speak and hasn’t yet been able to share his experience. He can understand, but he is missing expressive language to share his thoughts and his feelings. From my perspective, he experienced some not very nice things. He has some behaviors that developed as coping mechanisms. When I look at pictures of him from that time vs. images of him now, there is such a difference, and it isn’t a difference of age. I can see the impact of the disabling environment that he was in.” How did you make the move out of the group home? Paraphrasing from the podcast, Libby shares: “Because he couldn’t articulate his experience himself, we had to come up with a decision-making process and take a leap of faith to help him move out of the group home. Meeting with other peers and people that have gone before you, then you can see the thing that you want because someone else has created it and is living it. You can then see the pathway forward – this is so important. You can see the evidence, or indicators, to a good life, that is there in other people’s lives, but they aren’t there in your family; this can help to take that leap of faith.” How did you breaking through communication and behavioral barriers? Paraphrasing from the podcast, Libby shares: This is an ongoing challenge. We had the questions: Who is going to want to live with Matthew? Who is going to want to care for him? It is what I call the “what ifs..” It is helpful to list out the ‘What If’s…” What if… Someone does something to him..What if… He loses the key…What if… xyz… This then becomes the basis for the safeguarding system we built. We need to step into the unknown, but before that, there is a lot of planning and preparing. By trusting and having a sound safeguarding system in place, we have found people, and people are out there. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right person.” Eric shares, “ It is a myth that people that have a disability have to live with other people that have disabilities.” Libby shares, “It is hard work. The social model of disability teaches us that it is going to be hard work. But, it was also hard work when Matthew was in institutional settings. In institutional settings, it was hard work to make a change because of the powerlessness [against the organization]. Now it [the social model] is hard work, just a different kind of hard work. For example, finding someone to live with Matthew. But now we have control and power.” What are some of the other key lessons you learned? Paraphrasing from the podcast, Libby shares: “We are not automatically an advocate. Families are blocked by low expectations, not having a sense of what is possible, past negative experiences. We are often making choices within very narrow perspectives. Also, there is a difference in advocating for ourselves and others. Families need to be careful about what we ask for and what we create. The history of what has been created by families includes many of the services that have been started, and there is a pattern of segregation as a result.” Eric: As families, it is our responsibility to educate ourselves. Take workshops, connect with thought leaders, listen to podcasts, and connect with families leading the inclusion movement. One step you can take is to take the FREE Empowering Ability Mini-Course. When I was watching the documentary about Mr. Rogers, Won’t You Be My Neighbour, I waited for the part where the movie turned and we find out he got off on little kids. By the end, I was in tears. Turns out, Mr. Rogers was just a really good dude, and someone that really cared about kids. He felt it was important to be honest with them, understand feelings like hate and anger, and deal with difficult cultural experiences directly. The documentary is an exploration of the life, lessons, and legacy of iconic children's television host, Fred Rogers. Copy & Content with Jon Cook: For Thought Leaders Who Give an 'Ish' About Their Audience
Seth Silvers started his first nonprofit at age 16 and was immediately hooked on the power of storytelling. His work with Story On empowers rising thought leaders to grow their marketing through the science and craft of great storytelling. Seth joins Copy & Content host Jon Cook on this week’s episode to talk about the nuances of telling a consistent brand story. Do you like what you heard on Copy & Content? Subscribe, share, and review the Copy & Content Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever you found this episode. Takeaways: It’s more important for us as rising thought leaders to show up with new content on a consistent basis than to try to create more content at an unpredictable rate. Consistency in your brand story means focusing on the core stories or memories in your business that you believe are most interesting to your audience. When it comes to the Hero’s Journey for your audience, you are not the hero; your audience is the hero, and you are the guide on your audience. "I challenge every single one of you, no matter what field you guys are in - no matter what career you guys have, every single person can use where they are as a platform to affect the people around you. Be it mental health, be it the outdoors, you know, promoting the outdoors, be it cancer. There are so many ways you can help others and I think that every single person has the opportunity to do that." - Cody Wiktorski According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. In 2017, 47,173 Americans died by suicide. There were an estimated 1,300,000 suicide attempts. How do we change this? By telling every single person's story. Every individual has a story that needs to be told. Cody Wiktorski's Story: On this episode, we have the one and only Cody Wiktorski. Cody comes from a large family with 5 brothers and a sister and has embraced the meaning of family. A year and a half ago, Cody lost his younger brother, Casey, to suicide. Looking for a place to get away and think clearly, Cody went to the mountains. He found the Adirondacks a place where he could reconnect with the values and direction with which he was intending to lead his life. In the process, he learned of the power that mountains have to be a gateway into positive mental and physical health. He also discovered them as an avenue for mental health awareness. After the passing of Cody's younger brother, Casey, he and his brother Colby started an organization called Wik Brothers that is all about mental health awareness and suicide prevention. This episode is all about the connection between mountains and mental health and the immense power they have to connect us with what truly matters. Cody and I talk about: How mountain experiences and culture encourage community, mental clarity, and a place to open up and truly connect with others. The passing of Cody's younger brother, Casey, and the start of and mission behind Wik Brothers . On this weeks show, Accelerating precision medicine for cancer patients, Avivagen partners with NRC to tackle antibiotic resistance in humans, and Knight buys in on an Israeli biotech, We have all this and more on this week’s Biotechnology Focus Radio Show Podcast. Welcome to another episode of Biotechnology Focus Podcast. I’m your host Shawn Lawrence, here to give you a rundown of this week’s top stories on the Canadian biotech scene, Story Montreal’s Knight Therapeutics-a specialty pharma company reports it is taking a small stake in an Israeli-based company, Protalix BioTherapeutics, through the acquisition of 6,200,000 common shares of the company at an average price of US$0.57 per share. With the purchase, Knight now owns approximately five per cent of the outstanding common shares of Protalix. The shares were purchased by Abir Therapeutics Ltd., Knight’s wholly-owned Israeli headquartered subsidiary, which owns 28.3 per cent of Medison Pharma (Medison), Israel’s third largest pharmaceutical company ranked by revenues. It is anticipated that Medison will provide selected services to Abir in order to launch innovative pharmaceuticals in Israel. Protalix, a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company is focused on the development and commercialization of recombinant therapeutic proteins expressed through its proprietary plant cell-based expression system, ProCellEx®. Protalix’s first product manufactured by ProCellEx, taliglucerase alfa, was approved for marketing by the U.S. FDA. Story In VICTORIA, BC, Aurinia Pharmaceuticals Inc. reports it has selected Worldwide Clinical Trials as its Clinical Research Organization (CRO) for the company’s AURORA Phase 3 study of volcosporin for the treatment of active lupus nephritis (LN). Voclosporin, an investigational drug, is calcineurin inhibitor and immunosuppressant. According to the company, by inhibiting calcineurin, voclosporin blocks IL-2 expression and T-cell mediated immune responses. It is made by a modification of a single amino acid of the cyclosporine molecule which has shown a more predictable pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic relationship, an increase in potency, an altered metabolic profile, and potential for flat dosing. Lupus Nephritis (LN) in an inflammation of the kidney caused by Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and represents a serious progression of SLE. SLE is a chronic, complex and often disabling disorder and affects more than 500,000 people in the United States (mostly women). With the selection of Worldwide, Aurinia will now proceed with conducting a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind global 52-week trial in approximately 320 patients. The primary endpoint as in the Phase 2b AURA trial is renal response (complete remission), at 24 weeks. In addition to the assessment of renal response, a key marker of clinical benefit in this population is the duration of proteinuria improvement. Therefore, secondary endpoints will include the duration of renal response at 52 weeks (48 weeks in AURA), an efficacy measure which delineates durability of renal response (remission), an important parameter in evaluating long-term outcomes for the treatment of LN. Story On the business front, Mississauga’s Aralez Pharmaceuticals announced last week that it is opening new offices in Dublin, Ireland. The company, which focuses on cardiovascular, pain and other specialty areas, says it plans to add more highly skilled jobs in Dublin by the end of 2017, and use these offices as a launching pad for expansion into the broader European Union market. The Dublin offices are Aralez's first permanent business premises outside of North America. Story New findings published in Nature are highlighting the potential of a new messenger RNA vaccine to protect against Zika virus. Acuitas Therapeutics Inc., a private biotechnology company based in Vancouver published the data demonstrating that single low dose immunization with a messenger RNA delivered in an Acuitas LNP carrier has the potential to protect against infection by Zika virus. The company is developing a lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery technology for the messenger RNA (mRNA). In the Nature paper, Acuitas Therapeutics scientists and academic researchers including Dr. Drew Weissman, a professor of Infectious Diseases in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania showed that single low-dose immunization with mRNA-LNP encoding the pre-membrane and envelope (prM-E) glycoproteins of a Zika virus strain responsible for the 2013 outbreak elicited potent, durable and protective neutralizing antibody responses in animals. The company in collaboration with Dr. Weissman say they hope to further advance this exciting new therapeutic modality. Story In Ottawa, ON, Avivagen Inc., a life sciences company commercializing products intended to replace the antibiotics added to livestock feeds, with the help of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) has launched a new project to establish proof-of-concept for a first human health application of its OxC-beta™ Technology. The technology is derived from Avivagen discoveries about carotenoids, compounds that give certain fruits and vegetables their bright colors and is a non-antibiotic means of maintaining optimal health and growth. OxC-beta™ Livestock is a proprietary product shown to be effective and economic in replacing the antibiotics commonly added to livestock feeds. Specifically, the project will evaluate the efficacy of OxC-beta™ Technology (“OxC-beta”) in an established research model of an infectious disease of humans. Work will be conducted by NRC experts at its facilities based upon a jointly developed protocol and is expected to be completed in 2017. Dr. James (Jamie) Nickerson, Avivagen’s director of product validation, commented on the project and its objectives, saying the company is pleased to be working with NRC. He adds that OxC-beta has demonstrated safety and effectiveness across more than a dozen livestock trials and those results suggest it could also prove to be important to human health and well-being. Neither the NRC or Avivagen have disclosed the specific disease target at this time, in the hopes of ensuring the patentability of this potential new application for OxC-beta™ technology. What is known is that the disease target is one of the top 18 urgent, serious or concerning drug-resistance threats listed by the United States Centers for Disease Control (the “CDC”). Story Vancouver’s Aequus Pharmaceuticals has landed $100,000 in funding from the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program to support the ongoing Proof of Concept clinical study of its lead product candidate, AQS1301, a once-weekly transdermal aripiprazole patch. Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic and the active ingredient in Abilify®, a leading medication in the US used for the treatment of a number of psychiatric disorders including bipolar I disorder, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and irritability associated with autistic disorder. Aripiprazole is currently available in once-daily oral tablets and a once-monthly injectable form, however, medication adherence continues to be a significant challenge for patients. In terms of the clinical study, Aequus anticipates results of this repeat dose, 28-day study in the first quarter of 2017. The results will be used to inform the final design of the patch to be advanced into the regulatory phase of its clinical trials. Aequus expects to confirm its regulatory development plan in a pre-Investigational New Drug (pre-IND) meeting with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the second half of 2017. Story In Toronto, Trillium Therapeutics Inc, a clinical-stage immuno-oncology company developing innovative therapies for the treatment of cancer, has initiated dosing in its second Phase 1 clinical trial with TTI-621 in patients with relapsed or refractory percutaneously-accessible solid tumors and mycosis fungoides. Trillium is developing TTI-621 as a novel checkpoint inhibitor of the innate immune system, and the drug is currently being evaluated in an ongoing 10-cohort Phase 1b study in patients with relapsed or refractory hematologic malignancies. The two-part clinical trial is designed as a multi-center, open-label Phase 1a/1b trial, with TTI-621 being evaluated as a single-agent in patients. The escalation phase will include single or multiple doses of TTI-621 delivered by intratumoral injections, which will be followed by an expansion phase during which one or more selected dose levels of TTI-621 will be tested. Story Wrapping things up this week, in a national first,t he Terry Fox Research Institute and two leading cancer centres in Canada -- the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto and the BC Cancer Agency in Vancouver – are partnering on an innovative pilot project to accelerate precision medicine for their cancer patients. The initiative comes at a time when other developed countries are investing heavily in strategies to improve survival from cancer through precision medicine and increased collaboration. The pilot will provide much-needed evidence on how best to roll out a broader vision for data sharing and collaborative translational and clinical research to enable precision medicine for cancer patients. The pilot is the first phase for developing and implementing a national program that will link high-performing comprehensive cancer research centres, hospitals and universities and their clinical and laboratory programs across Canada through the Terry Fox Designated Canadian Comprehensive Cancer Centres Network. Through the pilot project, each organization will provide complementary analyses of specimens (e.g. tumour biopsies and blood samples), identify and determine ways to harmonize their research processes, set up an IT infrastructure for data sharing, and develop resources required to conduct multi-centre precision medicine clinical trials. The initial focus will be on colorectal, ovarian, and prostate cancers, with the goal of improving the health outcomes of patients through treatment by precision medicine. Each organization is contributing $4 million over the next two years for a $12-million total investment that will see multidisciplinary teams focus on four specific research thrusts that are institutional priorities: genomics, immunotherapy, molecular imaging and data sharing.
