Just over a million new vehicles were sold in Africa last year, a relatively small number given the continent's enormous population, estimated at 1.5 billion. Chinese auto brands are looking at that discrepancy and think it provides a unique opportunity for rapid expansion, particularly in the budding electric vehicle market. BAIC Motors, BYD, Xpeng, and Neta are among a growing number of Chinese auto majors that have scaled up sales and manufacturing in Africa. But selling EVs in Africa is not going to be easy. In many countries, access to reliable electricity is a problem. Then there's the issue of charging stations and the high import taxes many governments impose on foreign-made cars. Even amid those challenges, Alex Mwanzo, general manager of Equator Mobile — a unit of the investment holding company Maris Africa — is optimistic about the prospects for Chinese EVs. Alex joins Eric & Njenga from Nairobi to explain why Chinese auto brands are well-positioned in the African market. This audio is brought to you by Endress and Hauser, a leading supplier of products, solutions and services for industrial process measurement and automation. Naamsa | The Automotive Business Council has welcomed the announcementby Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana in his Budget Speech on Wednesday that government will offer financial support for the local automotive industry to expand from the production of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to a manufacturing line-up that includes electric vehicles (EVs). However, while "that number is a good start, it will not be enough", cautions Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa. "A notable component of the Minister's announcement is the introduction of an investment allowance for new EV investments, set to commence in March 2026," he explains. "This allowance enables businesses and investors involved in EV production to claim 150% of their qualifying investment spending in the first year. "This financial incentive is a crucial step in attracting investments, fostering innovation, and driving the growth of the EV sector within South Africa." The investment allowance for EVs is a complementary initiative to government's existing Automotive Production Development Programme (APDP.) Mabasa notes, however, that the allocated R964-million for this new initiative should be viewed in the context of the average annual investment by all seven of the country's original equipment manufacturers (OEMs, or vehicle manufacturers), which currently totals about R5-billion. "It is also important to note that the investment support is coming only in 2026. In 2026 you won't have seven OEMs in South Africa as you do now. You'll have nine - BAIC and Stellantis will also be here. We don't think government is taking this into account. "It is a good start, make no mistake, but we'll continue to engage government to get an additional allocation," says Mabasa. Yesterday's Budget announcement also made no mention of incentives for consumers to buy the more pricey EVs - another matter high on the local automotive industry's wish list. "Government has indicated that this will form part of Phase 2, with Phase 1 the incentivisation of EV production," Mabasa tells Engineering News Online. "By Phase 2 the economy has hopefully turned, enabling us to stimulate demand for EVs." Local Content Focus Naamsa notes that the composition of the APDP post the EV investment-phase remains critical in ensuring the transitioning from traditional ICE vehicles to a dual platform that includes EVs by 2035. The current APDP rewards the use of locally made parts, among other factors. Of specific concern is EV battery production, which is largely situated in Japan, South Korea and China. The battery is the most expensive part of an EV. "The industry will continue to engage with government to carefully manage some of the challenges associated with the implementation of the APDP, especially concerning vehicles with limited local content," says Mabasa. "We hope to compare notes around the adoption of an APDP rate specifically designed to cover instances of low local content." Massive Losses Owing to Loadshedding Mabasa adds that Naamsa recognises the Budget's attention to challenges in the electricity sector, with a specific focus on reducing loadshedding and improving energy security. "The impractical levels of loadshedding experienced in 2023 had significant repercussions for the automotive industry, resulting in substantial financial losses and deferred investment funding," he warns. "With losses reaching R200-million per OEM for the last six months of 2023, the industry is eager to see improvements which will enhance operational stability and drive future investments."

By popular request, the podcast turns to the topic of electric vehicles and trying to look at this from a market perspective instead of a policy perspective, and really examine how the market works and how it breaks down in terms of EV characteristics and market shares. Today we are speakng to two EV experts: Tu Le of Sino Auto Insights, a mobility consultancy, and of China Evs and More podcast; and James Gao (Gao Tianjian) of Mercedes and the Beijing Energy Network. In this podcast we discuss: Why EV sales in China are surging What types of vehicles are seeing the most growth, and how similar Chinese vehicles are to EVs abroad How the market breaks down in terms of foreign vs domestic How China is able to scale up manufacturing of potentially globally competitive products, and which EVs have the most export potential The situation with battery swap, which is now expanding from NIO and BAIC to new players The charging situation for China's apartment dwellers We end the podcast with a game of buy-sell-or-hold, where we challenge our guests to identify the probability of different future EV scenarios, such as whether a Chinese EV will be a top seller worldwide (outside of China) in 2025. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   PORSCHE MACAN EV TEASED "The development of the all-electric Porsche Macan is finally moving from the drawing boards and computers to the real world. The Stuttgart-based automaker has just teased the EV SUV, prototypes of which are now heading outside Porsche’s proving grounds for the first time. " says Motor1: "The available photos show heavily camouflaged test cars that are heading towards Germany's public road network for real-world tests.  With the new teaser images, Porsche also reaffirmed the Macan EV will be launched on the market in 2023 and will become the brand’s first model to be underpinned by the PPE electric vehicle architecture."   https://www.motor1.com/news/506375/porsche-macan-ev-teased/   CHINA APPROVES NATIONAL EV BATTERY SWAP STANDARD "the country has just approved the first official swappable EV battery standard and safety guidelines, which are set to go into effect on Nov. 1, CNEVPost reported Monday. according to a statement made by Xin Guobin, vice minister of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, there are a few reasons, but the biggest are reduced cost to vehicle buyers, cheaper charging by charging during off-peak hours and customers being able to choose the size of battery they need on a given day." writes CNET.com: "Companies like NIO and BAIC have advanced the new battery swap standard, but it's Geely that seems to be sprinting ahead, based on a recent YouTube video showing off its 1-minute automated battery swapping station."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/china-ev-swappable-battery-standards-approved/   HARLEY-DAVIDSON IS TURNING LIVEWIRE INTO ITS OWN BRAND "A couple years ago, Harley-Davidson built its first electric motorcycle, the LiveWire, to largely positive reviews. Since we now live in a world created by constant brand consultant input, however, the company has announced they are branching out LiveWire into an entire separate electric motorcycle sub-brand" says Gear Patrol: "Harley-Davidson says LiveWire will "draw on its DNA as an agile disruptor from the lineage of Harley-Davidson," whatever that means. Per Harley, the new LiveWire entity will have a virtual headquarters paired with "initial hubs" in Silicon Valley and Harley-Davidson's home, Milwaukee. Livewire will launch its first new branded electric motorcycle on July 8th. LiveWire will target new buyers in a younger urban market. That's a substantially different buyer from the people who purchase Harley-Davidson's bread-and-butter touring bikes."   https://www.gearpatrol.com/cars/motorcycles/a36395359/harley-davidson-livewire-brand/   SUBARU’S FIRST ELECTRIC VEHICLE IS CALLED THE SOLTERRA "For Subaru diehards holding out for an electric vehicle, the wait is almost over. The Japanese automaker just announced new details about its first-ever EV, which is set to hit the streets in 2022. Subaru will call its first EV the Solterra, a fitting name for a brand synonymous with outdoor adventures and you know, the sun and the Earth. Also fittingly, Subaru’s first full-fledged EV will be an SUV that ships with the manufacturer’s well-regarded all-wheel-drive capabilities." writes Techcrunch: "The Solterra is built on a new platform the company is developing in partnership with Toyota, which the latter company will use for its impossibly named bZ4X crossover. Subaru has only released two teaser images so far, but given that the new SUV will share DNA with the Toyota bZ4X, Subaru’s offering will likely look like a toned-down, less aggressively styled version of Toyota’s forthcoming futuristic electric crossover."   https://techcrunch.com/2021/05/11/subaru-solterra-ev-2022/   ELECTRIC SEVEN DUE IN 2023 AS FIRST CATERHAM EV "Caterham is working to safeguard the future of the Seven in the face of looming homologation and legislative hurdles – and is set to launch its landmark first EV in the coming years. the priority is to ensure that any electric version of the diminutive two-seater “rides and handles like a Caterham”." syas Autocar: "the ‘EV Seven’ will be developed with a focus on keeping weight down in an effort to preserve the model’s trademark agility and pace. The suspension geometry and other aspects of the chassis will be recalibrated to mitigate the extra heft of the battery and electric motors, for example, and it will go without the weighty associated systems that are common on mainstream EVs, such as regenerative braking. a racing version would need to be equipped with rapid charging or an “interchangeable battery” but the road car – which, like the current Seven, will be geared towards occasional use – is less likely to receive these technologies."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/electric-seven-due-2023-first-caterham-ev   STAR-STUDDED LINE-UP TO CONTEST FIA RX2E DEMO A legendary line-up of rallycross talent will go head-to-head during a one-off FIA RX2e Championship demonstration competition at the upcoming RallyX Nordic meeting at Höljes. The event will provide an opportunity to see the cutting-edge electric vehicles – which are set to face off in the first-ever FIA electric rallycross championship this season – race wheel-to-wheel. Multiple World Rally Champion Marcus Grönholm will join the likes of World Rallycross title-winners Johan Kristoffersson and Timmy Hansen in the inaugural Superteam Challenge while RX2e test driver Oliver Eriksson, who is a double RX2 champion and 2020 RallyX Nordic Supercar title-winner, is also in the mix. RX Lites title-winners Kevin Hansen and Kevin Eriksson are also in the talent pool while World RX race winners Andreas Bakkerud and Sebastian Eriksson complete the line-up of participating drivers. The electric vehicles, which generate 250kW (335bhp) of power and up to 510Nm torque, will be showcased in four heats and two finals as the world’s best off-road racers do battle at Höljes.   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   A recent survey – which I highly questioned and disagreed with – claimed 1 in 5 EV owners went back to piston power.  I have never heard anything like a 20% rate of EV drivers being unhappy with electric. So how do you get your pictures to turn out how you want them? That’s exactly what you’ll learn in this episode. When it comes to editing, you can’t rely on it to fix your photos. It’s so much more important to get them right in camera. I teach all about this in Brand Builder’s Bootcamp, but for now, just know that it’s best to get a nice clean shot and then work from there. When editing a photo on your phone use an editing app. The native apps are actually quite good, so if you are comfortable with that, everything that I’m going to tell you is available there. But if you want a little more versatility, try out one of these apps.LightroomThis app is focused more to the amateur photographers who love taking a bunch of photos and want to edit them on-the-go. I love this app because you can use RAW images (more on that later) and the slider system is so simple.VSCOVSCO has a great selection of presets, it gives you great control of changing the look and feel of any image. However, only the basic features of this app are completely free, you have to make purchases within the app to do more complicated editing.SnapseedGoogle’s Snapseed is one of the best ways to make edits to your photos and is available for both Android and iOS. It uses an intuitive technology where you do most editing by hand if that suits your needs better. There are a million other editors out there, so play around until you find out what you like best. Here are the 5 steps to my editing workflow...Crop and AlignAdjust the exposure and contrast.Fix color balance, Temperature and TintAdjust Shadows, HighlightsSaturation / VibrancyCheck out the podcast for all the details on how these work.So what if I’ve just scared you off from editing your photos and you are saying, “But Brittany...what If I just want to use a filter?” Well here’s the quick and dirty...Filters can be awesome, but they’re easy to get wrong. When people use them, they tend to be the first and only stop in most people’s process. Which doesn’t really work. The problem is they aren’t smart, so they can’t read if your exposure is off, what the subject is, or what you want to accomplish. For example, Instagram’s Juno filter will increase the contrast and vividness in your photo whether or not it needs it. If your photo already started out with high contrast, it’s going to look really bad. If you want to make a filter like that work for you, you need to hand edit the photo first and then apply the filter, compensating for the effects the filter is going to put on. And that all sounds like a lot of extra work to me. Speaking of all of this work...why even edit your photos in the first place? Well because it can really do wonders for the image that you took. Editing is like putting the icing on the cake. It’s that final piece that pulls everything together, enhances the emotion, and creates a finished product. But here’s the thing. Don’t over do it! While today’s phones are super powerful and truly amazing, the sensors are still a lot smaller than a full sized digital camera. It can only capture so much light and information when taking photos. The more you alter a smartphone image, the more the quality disintegrates. Remember my very first tip. Try to get it right in camera. You can’t save a bad photo with editing. Don’t forget to join us for the Content Marketing Plan Challenge. Going on Right now! Register today at www.britbennion.com/plan

Show #755   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 21st April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   PORSCHE TAYCAN 4S BLOWS AWAY EPA RANGE BY 40 PERCENT IN THIS TEST "Even though most of the attention has been drawn by the most powerful Porsche Taycan, the Turbo S, that’s clearly not the model most people are going to buy. The majority of buyers will probably go for the less powerful (and way cheaper) Taycan 4S model which, like the Turbo and Turbo S, has no problem going further on a charge than the EPA advertises." says InsideEVs: "Furthermore, the 4S with the 93.4 kWh battery pack has the longest quoted range of any Taycan, 203 miles (327 km), compared to the Turbo S that only manages a claimed 192 miles (308 km). he Smoking Tire, he drives a Taycan 4S on an 234-mile round trip from Los Angeles to Palm springs and back. He notes that with a full charge his 4S tester could have reached a theoretical 294 miles, considerably more than what the EPA quotes it."   https://insideevs.com/reviews/410798/porsche-taycan-4s-range-test/   TESLA MODEL Y ‘FUTURE PROOF’ AUTOPILOT-INFOTAINMENT LINK HITS TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE "The Tesla Model Y is proving to be a vehicle that’s loaded to the brim with optimizations. From its wiring to its casting, the Model Y seems to be designed to be as future proof as possible. And if a recent set of tweets from a noted Tesla hacker are any indication, this future proofing may even extend all the way into the ethernet links used in the vehicle’s Autopilot computer and infotainment system." says Teslarati: " @greentheonly recently posted images of computer components used in the Model Y that were evidently different from the ones used in the Model 3. Among these, the most notable change lay in Tesla’s use of upgraded ethernet links for the Autopilot computer and the infotainment system. While the Model 3 is equipped with 100 mbps links, the Model Y was equipped with links that are capable of 1 gigabit speeds."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-autopilot-infotainment-link-explained/   WATCH LUCID AIR PLAY ON SNOW AND ICE AS PART OF ITS DEVELOPMENT "testing of the Lucid Air electric luxury sedan continues ahead of its launch expected later this year. Earlier this month, the EV startup showed us how a Lucid Air prototype traveled for 400 miles (644 km) from San Francisco to Los Angeles without recharging the batteries. Now, the company shows the Lucid Air in an area with a less pleasant climate than California." according to CarSScoops: "Lucid Motors took two Lucid Air prototypes (Beta 4 and Beta 5) to the frozen northern reaches of Minnesota for testing in temperatures that dropped as low as -27 F/-33 C. According to the startup, “testing on low-friction surfaces is an important exercise that helps us refine the Lucid Air for stable performance in winter’s worst road conditions.” During the tests, engineers validated vehicle dynamics and assessed features like antilock braking, traction control, and stability control."   https://www.carscoops.com/2020/04/watch-lucid-air-play-on-snow-and-ice-as-part-of-its-development/   BUY A TESLA-POWERED ELECTRIC DEFENDER, BUT NOT FROM LAND ROVER "East Coast Defenders, now known as E.C.D. Automotive Design, may have changed its name, though its focus on building top-quality Land Rover Defender SUVs has not. The company is still building cool Defenders, and its latest build combines the rugged utility of Land Rover, the iconic styling of the Defender, and the all-electric powertrain of a Tesla. The Electric Defender is a blend of old-school design and new-school technologies, creating a unique SUV experience." according to Motor1: "the drivetrain from a Tesla that gives the SUV an estimated range of 220 miles on a single charge thanks to its 100-kilowatt-hour capacity. E.C.D. Automotive Design says the electric-powered Defender can hit 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) in an impressive 5.5 seconds."   https://www.motor1.com/news/410926/tesla-powered-land-rover-defender/   SK INNOVATION WILL SUPPLY NCM 811 BATTERY CELLS TO BAIC "After beating its Chinese competitors’ offers, the Korean battery cell maker SK Innovation won the supply contract with the Chinese automaker giant BAIC." writes PushEVs: "The NCM 811 batteries to be used by Arcfox, a premium BEV brand of BAIC BJEV will be produced at SK Innovation’s battery cell plant in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, China.  SK Innovation has been promising its NCM 811 battery cells since 2017 and postponed them a couple of times, but now it will finally be able to deliver what was expected a long time ago.  The Kia e-Niro and Kia e-Soul that currently use NCM 622 battery cells from SK Innovation could get a battery upgrade to NCM 811 cells. As for the Hyundai Kona Electric, it currently uses the same LGY E63B battery cells (NCM 622) that we find in the ZE 40 battery of the old generation Renault ZOE. With an upgrade to the NCM 712 battery cells from LG Chem – that are already in the new generation Renault ZOE -, the Kona Electric would get a 84 kWh (80 kWh usable) battery."   https://pushevs.com/2020/04/21/sk-innovation-will-supply-ncm-811-battery-cells-to-baic/   ZERO-EMISSION DRY CARGO SHIP ENABLED BY HYBRID, ELECTRIC SOLUTIONS "ABB has built a significant presence in the dry cargo vessel market, with an increasing number of vessels specified with electric or hybrid propulsion solutions" says Electric Vehicles Research: "Germany's largest bulk carrier company Oldendorff Carriers ordered two first ever self-unloading bulk carriers to feature ABB's Azipod electric propulsion. Each of these ships will include a pair of 1.9MW electric propulsion units plus diesel-electric power plant and power management from ABB."   KAWASAKI'S FIRST ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE WILL GET A FOUR-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION "Kawasaki confirmed its upcoming entry into the blossoming electric motorcycle segment will offer a manual transmission. Called Endeavor, the model is being developed with track use in mind, so engagement is key." according to Autoblog: "The Japanese company is in the process of teasing the battery-powered model on its official YouTube channel. The latest installment in the 10-episode series shows a prototype bike whirring away on a race track as the rider uses the foot-operated lever to go through the gears. "The manual transmission not only allows a greater speed range, it also allows the rider to have greater input when operating the bike," the company said."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/04/21/kawasaki-electric-motorcycle-manual-transmission/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Do you prefer to buy new or used EV? Show #673   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 22nd January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new PATREON PRODUCER JOHN WILSON   TOTAL TO INSTALL UP TO 20,000 CHARGING POINTS IN THE NETHERLANDS "Total has been awarded by the Metropolitan Region Amsterdam Electric (MRA-Electric) Europe’s largest concession contract for electric vehicles charging. Up to 20,000 new charging points will be installed and operated by the company in three provinces of North-Holland, Flevoland and Utrecht in the Netherlands. That's on top of already over 4,500 installed and under Total management." reports InsideEVs today: "As the press release does not describe the type of charging points, we assume it will be at least mostly AC (probably three-phase 11 or 22 kW). The thing that we know is a commitment to deliver 100% renewable electricity and the implementation of smart charging features"   https://insideevs.com/news/394188/total-20000-charging-points-netherlands/   RESERVATION BOOKS OPEN FOR LUCID AIR IN EUROPE "The US-American startup Lucid Motors has now opened European reservation books for the first model Lucid Air. According to the company, the debut model will be officially unveiled in New York in April. Deliveries in Europe are scheduled to begin at the end of 2021." says Carrie at electrive: "For a refundable deposit of 1,000 dollars (900 euros or 970 Swiss francs), Lucid Air can now be pre-ordered specifically in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Spain, France, Belgium, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Iceland and Monaco. Expansion into other countries is planned, according to the California-based company. For the production of the all-electric luxury sedan, Lucid Motors recently started building an electric car plant in Casa Grande in the US state of Arizona."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/22/reservation-books-open-for-lucid-air-in-europe/   NEW SMART EQ RANGE PRICED FROM £16,850 IN THE UK The new smart EQ range is now on sale, with prices starting from £16,850 for the smart fortwo coupé (including PICG grant of £3,500; total price £20,350 excluding grant). The forfour is priced from £17,285 (£20,785 excluding grant), and the unique fortwo cabriolet starts at £20,420 (£23,920 excluding grant).   The smart electric drive features an 82 hp electric motor powering the rear wheels via a single-speed gearbox. All smart EQ models have a range of around 70 miles, while  maximum speed is electronically limited to 81 mph. The 96-cell lithium-ion battery is coupled with a – now standard – 22 kW on-board charger, meaning that charging can take less than 40 minutes (from 10 to 80% charge) using a rapid charger, and can be charged in less than six hours using a home wall box.   TESLA MODEL Y PROTOTYPES SPOTTED COLD-WEATHER TESTING IN MINNESOTA SNOW "Two Tesla Model Y prototypes have been spotted in the snow in Minnesota, presumably doing some cold-weather testing ahead of the start of production." acccording to Fred at electrek: "Tesla has been ramping up its tests on public roads, and several more Model Y prototypes have been spotted in testing, including one in the snow in the mountains in California. But that’s nice weather compared to Minnesota, where Tesla now appears to be testing the Model Y for cold weather. Electrek reader James L. spotted two Model Y prototypes in the Twin Cities over the weekend"   https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/22/tesla-model-y-prototypes-spotted-cold-weather-testing-minnesota-snow/#   CLOSE TO 1.18 MILLION PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CARS WERE SOLD IN CHINA IN 2019 "Plug-in electric car sales in China shrunk for the past six consecutive months, but the rate of decline at least has not increased.   The EV Sales Blog reports almost 150,000 sales for the month of December, which is 22% less than a year ago (the overall automotive market was down by just 1%). The market share amounted to 6.8%. Both types of plug-ins BEVs and PHEVs are in the red (BEVs are down 17%, but hold 86% of the segment, while PHEVs went down 45%)." reports InsideEVs today: "The top-selling plug-in models in China are all-electric cars (only five plug-in hybrids were classified in the top 20).   The best selling model is the BAIC EU-Series (111,047), which in December set also a new monthly record for the Chinese market (21,963).   The second-best this year was BYD Yuan (67,839), followed by the tiny SAIC Baojun E-Series (60,050).   Among the brands, the top three in China were:   BYD: 19% share, 6th consecutive #1 BAIC: 14% share SAIC: 12% share"   https://insideevs.com/news/394229/plugin-electric-car-sales-china-2019/   TESLATHEATER.COM (BETA) IS LIVE "A Tesla owner (TeslaModel11 on Reddit) created and developed TeslaTheater, which is a free service for fellow Tesla owners that will allow them to access different streaming media apps in full screen instead of just in a small browser window. The creator has verified its functionality on the Model 3, Model S, and Model X. He feels it is ready for wider beta testing and feedback" acccording to CleanTechnica: "On the bottom of the site, you can see “Enable Fullscreen.” Click the link to enable a workaround that launches fullscreen. This loads a YouTube screen that loops you back into the interface when you click on “Go To Site.” Once you click that, you will be in the TeslaTheater interface in fullscreen mode and all of the apps and sites you load will remain in full screen."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/21/teslatheater-com-beta-is-live/   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   With increasing attacks on EVs and vandalism caught on camera, why do some people have a problem with EVs?     I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 230 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #586   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 20th September 2019. LG CHEM MASS PRODUCING NCM CYCLICAL BATTERIES FOR TESLA "LG Chem has begun to mass produce batteries for Tesla’s Model 3 electric vehicles from its Nanjing plant in China, according to industry sources Sept. 18. The US-based EV maker will be using LG Chem’ 21700 type batteries using NCM811 that boast a nickel proportion of 80% or more. The LG company previously supplied the NCM811 to electric buses. This is the first time to supply an automobile, the sources said." reports TheElec.kr: "Until now, Tesla has been supplied by Japan’s Panasonic, which uses NCA, which is another type of high nickel cathode material. LG Chem convinced Tesla to switch to NCM811 batteries based on the longer driving distances per charge. It also hinted that it may be able to begin mass producing NCMA batteries, which is even higher in nickel, beginning in 2022 to apply to EVs."   http://en.thelec.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=512   DAIMLER ENDS GAS ENGINE DEVELOPMENT: FULL FOCUS ON ELECTRIC CARS "Daimler has just announced that it is halting all future development of gasoline engines. The automaker will solely focus on electric cars from here on out. This implies that Mercedes-Benz is taking the same approach." says InsideEVs. Translated for Auto Motor Und Sport: "Daimler is currently bringing the latest generation of internal combustion engines to market in various models, such as the new inline six-cylinder engine for the E- and S-Class as well as the SUVs - this generation could also be the last." Auto Motor und Sport says that this bit of news comes from Daimler development chief Markus Schaefer, who suggests that Daimler's roadmap currently has no plan, for future gasoline engine development, though he notes that the outlook could change. However, the focus now is on electric-drive, with gas and diesel engines on the backburner."   https://insideevs.com/news/371793/daimler-no-gas-engine-electric-only/   CHINA IS WINNING THE RACE TO DOMINATE ELECTRIC CARS "China’s gasoline demand, after almost doubling between 2010 and July 2019, is now essentially flat. China diesel demand, meanwhile, peaked several years ago." reports Bloomberg: "China’s sales of “alternative energy vehicles” — mostly electric, with some hybrids and a small number of natural gas combustion engines — are nearly 1.5 million. Meanwhile, sales of all passenger vehicles peaked at close to 25 million in the middle of 2018, and are now below 22 million." And the story of China is one dominated by domestic makers: "There is only one company in the top 10 by percent of electric passenger vehicle revenue that isn’t Chinese: Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp. Two Chinese automakers get more than 40% of revenue from electric vehicle sales; a third gets nearly a quarter of its revenue from EVs." It's really a two horse race between Chery and BYD. Along with JAC, BAIC, Jiangling, Geely and WM Motor amongst many others.   https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2019-09-20/electric-vehicle-market-so-far-belongs-to-china"   VOLKSWAGEN WANTS ITS ELECTRIC CARS TO MIRROR TRADITIONAL PRICING MODEL "Electric cars likely have years before they reach cost parity with vehicles donning an internal-combustion engine, but Volkswagen wants to scrap the waiting game. Instead, it's looking at an "apples to apples" kind of approach for its electric vehicles. That's the word from Volkswagen America CEO Scott Keogh." says Roadshow by CNET: "The CEO told Green Car Reports in an interview published Tuesday that the automaker's goal is to price its electric cars comparable to a similar fossil fuel-powered model in its lineup. In this case, he spoke of the forthcoming ID 4 -- an electric SUV that will mark VW's electric car assault on the US. The ID 4 should be sized similarly to the Tiguan crossover SUV, and with a price point to match the traditional car, it VW "is positioning it for the masses." As a reminder, the Tiguan starts at $25,290 after a destination charge."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/volkswagen-electric-car-pricing-msrp-id3-id4/   TATA MOTORS TO ROLL OUT ELECTRIC CARS, SUVS ON NEW ZIPTRON PLATFORM "Tata Motors is working on a range of electric passenger vehicles including SUVs based on its new e-vehicle technology Ziptron. The company, which is already producing electric versions of its Tigor hatchback car, plans to launch the first e-vehicle on Ziptron electric powertrain technology in Q4 of FY20 and will follow this up with at least 3-4 more products." according to India Times: "nd even though the government’s e-mobility focus is for public transport, the Ziptron range “will primarily focus on personal buyers – we are not targeting volumes but more a progressive move towards e-mobility. In terms of electric commercial mobility, Tata Motors will not only get into all-electric buses but also focus on last-mile cargo options."   https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/tata-motors-to-roll-out-electric-cars-suvs-on-new-ziptron-powertrain-platform/articleshow/71218877.cms   NEW CARSHARE SERVICE WITH 2,000 ELECTRIC VEHICLES LAUNCHING IN METRO VANCOUVER "There will soon be a new carshare player in Metro Vancouver, and its name is SUMO — short for Shared Use Mobility Company." according to Daily Hive: "A smartphone app for the service will be ready by the summer of 2020. SUMO’s initial fleet of vehicles will use 100 Hyundai electric IONIQ cars and 50 Hyundai KONA cars, plus a range of other vehicles such as Volkswagen ID, Audi E-tron, Tesla, and the Ford F-150 electric truck. As the all-electric vehicle fleet and the number of hubs grow, the business model will shift to intra-hub pick-up and return. When the fleet size reaches a critical mass stage, SUMO will become a regional free-float service, with an aim to have 2,000 vehicles by the end of 2022."   https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/sumo-carshare-electric-vancouver-surrey   THIS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS TEACHES KIDS TO EV-SWAP CLASSIC VWS "Auto shop classes have been dwindling in the United States as the high-budget course is simply too expensive for most schools to run. In the case of Memorial High School in West New York, New Jersey, shop teacher Ron Grosinger witnessed the elective course go from six teachers down to two. But Grosinger recognized shop class is still an important hands-on learning experience for students, so he found a way to keep it relevant for years to come." writes CarBuzz: "So in 2008, he approached the school with a new idea: teaching his students to convert a gasoline car into an electric car. Since beginning the program in 2008, it has expanded to four teachers and the school added an after-school automotive program. There are also more female students than when the program began."   https://carbuzz.com/news/this-high-school-class-teaches-kids-to-ev-swap-classic-vws     QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   What is your dream EV roadtrip?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 253 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #464   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 6th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   MERCEDES-BENZ EQC SALES RELEASE & START OF PRODUCTION The first EQC will roll off the production line at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen. "Mercedes-Benz EQC just entered production in Bremen, Germany where it is assembled along with the conventional C-Class Saloon and Estate, as well as the GLC and GLC Coupé. Later this year, production will be launched in China too in partnership with BAIC, by joint venture Beijing Benz Automotive Co. Ltd. (BBAC)." reports InsideEvs: "Merdeces-Benz joins the Tesla Model X, Audi e-tron and Jaguar I-PACE on the high-end part of the market. Prices in Germany (incl. 19% VAT) starts from €71,281, while the launch edition EQC Edition 1886 starts from €84,930.30. 80 kWh battery packs are assembled by Deutsche Accumotive at its site in Kamenz (near Dresden), Germany using LG Chem batterycells."   https://insideevs.com/news/348128/daimler-starts-production-mercedes-benz-eqc/   AUDI CONSIDERING 'VEGAN PACKAGE' FOR E-TRON ELECTRIC SUV "The first-ever all-electric SUV from Audi is subtle and silent both in how it sounds, and the statement it makes. For the e-tron, Audi didn’t go for the quirky compliance car theme that we can find in everything from the BMW i3 to the Honda Clarity. Instead, it’s looking to tastefully blend into the crowd." says Manoli for Motor1.com today: "There’s no denying that buyers for premium electric SUVs might also be similar to the crowd that cares about their environmental impact in more ways than just driving. That can include the use of sustainable, recycled, or upcycled materials for vehicle interiors that would fit with folks who enjoy a vegan lifestyle, and it seems that Audi is listening."   https://www.motor1.com/news/348135/audi-considering-vegan-package-electric-suv/   TESLA NAVIGATE ON AUTOPILOT: LANE CHANGE, ROAD DEBRIS, NO CONFIRMATION “Now that Tesla's Navigate on Autopilot feature has undergone another substantial update, it's high time to see exactly how it reacts. Thankfully, Tesla owner and YouTuber Scott Kubo does a solid job of showing off the feature while providing a nice narrative. The best part is, he doesn't ramble on and on, which keeps the video short and concise" report Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "Kubo shows his Tesla Model 3 changing lanes on its own, without any driver confirmation. Moreover, there's some debris on the road that appears as though it's left over from a previous accident."   https://insideevs.com/news/348088/video-tesla-navigate-autopilot-challenges     Matthias Schmidt @auto_schmidt "Pure electric new car registrations in W.Europe have now surpassed >100,000 units after just 4-Months this year. Consequentially more new pure electric BEV passengers cars took to the streets during the first third of 2019 than during the whole of 2016."   https://twitter.com/auto_schmidt/status/1125471147284254721   ELECTRIFY AMERICA HOSTS "CHARGE FORWARD" TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP "It's been exactly a year since Electrify America turned on the power at their first DC Fast charger site on May 2nd, 2018. Since then, the EV charging network born out of the Volkswagen diesel scandal has been quite busy. In addition to the rollout of their network of high-speed DC fast charge stations, Electrify America had some more news to announce, so they invited select media outlets to their headquarters in Reston, VA for a technology workshop." says Tom Molughney for InsideEVs.com: "Electrify America president & CEO Giovanni Palazzo spoke first and proudly announced that they have just commissioned their 161st site. Palazzo also said they are targeting to have 484 sites open by the end of 2019. Those sites will include 2,000+ high-speed DC fast charge stations, and 2,800 level 2 chargers. The sites are an average of 70 miles apart, and have a maximum distance between sites of 120 miles."   "The CEO also reaffirmed that Electrify America will indeed begin to employ Plug&Charge technology before the end of this year. Plug&Charge uses the global standard ISO 15118 which identifies the vehicle when it's plugged in, eliminating the need to use an RFID card or credit card to activate a charging session. Palazzo said that a multitude of auto manufacturers were already working on getting their EVs ready to utilize Plug&Charge technology."   "In addition to the new lower per-minute rate and the membership plans, Electrify America will be charging based on the car's maximum charge rate. There are three different levels that will determine what the customer pays by the minute: 0-75 kW; 76-125 kW & 126-350 kW. The exact pricing for these three levels hasn't been formally announced yet, but this does seem to be a reasonable way to establish the pricing structure."   https://insideevs.com/news/347986/electrify-america-charge-forward-workshop/   VOLKSWAGEN GROUP IS TRAINING ITS EMPLOYEES IN E-MOBILITY Zwickau will begin producing the compact ID.* this fall already – which is why the plant in Saxony is one of the first sites to provide comprehensive e-mobility training for its employees. Three thousand production workers alone will complete the training center’s e-mobility program, which is preparing them for the new production requirements. More than 300 apprentices have gone through the high-voltage training thus far – and there is a big demand for them at the company.   CHINA'S LITHIUM SUPPLY LETS IT FAR OUTSTRIP U.S. IN CELL PRODUCTION "As the U.S. president pushes for more things to be built in his country instead of China, the push to build electric vehicles there comes as the rush for batteries persists. And China holds the lead in lithium supply over the U.S." writes Zac for InsideEvs.com today: "According to Bloomberg, both countries are investing heavily in other countries that are rich in lithium mining – Argentina, Australia and Chile, specifically. But China arguably has an edge because it is also doing mineral collection in its home country, whereas analysts say it's been decades since such facilities have been built in the U.S. Where the U.S. produces a little more than 10 percent of lithium-ion cells in the world, China controls roughly two-thirds of the market, the publication reported. China was by far the leading market for EVs in 2018 and the gap among the U.S. is only set to grow in the next few years, according to Bloomberg's analysts."   UKRI STUDYING DEMOCRATIZED PEER-TO-PEER MICROGRIDS "UK Research and Innovation has begun a study to determine how people with small rooftop solar systems — called micro-generators — could create a peer-to-peer energy market. The research is funded by UKRI’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council." according to CleanTechnica: "Entitled the Household-Supplier Energy Market Project, the focus is on creating a democratized peer-to-peer (P2P) energy market. Currently, a homeowner with a rooftop solar system can use the electricity created within the home or sell it to the grid. In a peer-to-peer energy market, any two individuals or households could directly buy from and sell to each other, without involving utilities or other third parties."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/05/06/ukri-studying-democratized-peer-to-peer-microgrids/     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. It’s Thursday 7th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to.   The background to the shareholder meeting was a $785million loss in the first quarter of this year alone. Model 3 production is good, and behind expectations.   Mission: "To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.   Thank you to everyone who I follow who attended and posted pictures, from a few thousand miles away I felt very close. Thank you Dennis Pascual who had great pics of the white Roadster on show, albeit without an interior so not a working model. A reminder to those with a spare $250,000 kicking around, you can put you deposit down now. The deposit being the full amount!   1.ELON GETS EMOTIONAL Elon started off emotional, almost walking on stage with tears in his eyes and steadying his voice. It was quite personal anything with some shareholders wanting him removed as Chairman, which was never a realistic proposal. Shareholders gave Elon and the board a full vote of confidence. It was visceral how much he cares, and how deeply invested he is on a personal level. Invested in the financial success, the quality of cars and above all, the safety of his workforce. "At Tesla, we build our cars with love. At a lot of other companies, they're built by marketing or the finance department, and there's no soul. We're not perfect, but we pour our heart and soul into it and we really care."   WORKER INJURY RATE REDUCED Safer Employees was the title of this slide. Zach from Clean Technica says: "Tesla’s factory worker injury rate is now approximately 6% below the auto industry average and 50% what it was when GM and Toyota were last building cars in the NUMMI factory. Last year, Tesla’s factory worker injury rate was a bit above the auto industry average. Tesla’s long-term goal is to get it to 50% of the industry average, or 25% of what it was when GM and Toyota were running the factory."   TESLA ARE IMPROVING QUALITY Tesla Model 3 repairs reduced rapidly from Sep 17 to January 18, and have stabilised now at a much lower level.   BATTERY PACK AND CELL COST REDUCTIONS In the Q&A section, I thought some of the most interesting comments came when Elon and JB were chatting about battery cell prices. Below $100/kWh is the holy grail for cost parity with combustion engines and some analysts put that at 2020, others I’ve seen only last week said if couldn't be done before 2023. BNEF, hugely respected and knowing a lot more than I do, say 2025. Elon said...by the end of this year at cell level. That took my breath away to be honest. He said it depends on commodity prices, and it's cell level not pack level, but $100 by the end of the year? Even if you account for ElonTime and add 6 months (make it 12!) and it would be huge news. Pack level $100/kWh within two years, and even Elon joked that wasn't ElonTime, that was realistic time. He specifically talked about improvements to the chemistry, vertical integration at Giga, and production of anodes and cathodes. If i was an analyst today or at BNEF I’d be going back the calculator sharpish and revising my estimates so not to seem out of touch. As the battery pack is always the most expensive part of an EV, which reduces Tesla's costs and increases their margins.   MODEL 3 IS TOP SELLING PREMIUM SEDAN It's hard with Tesla to focus on the stories that matter, such can be the chaos of media attention around them. Partly brought on by their own success, the half a million Model 3 reservations, and the bold claims they make about their ability to produce them. But they ARE making a lot of cars, and rates are improving. So much so that Model 3 is now the best-selling mid-sized premium sedan in the U.S. on a monthly basis, now outselling Daimler's popular Mercedes-Benz C-Class, according to Tesla. More than the Audi A4, more than the BMW 3Series, more than the Lexus IS.   GIGAFACTORY OVERDRIVE Tesla expects to produce more than half of the world’s EV batteries in Q3 2018, including Chinese production. Without any sort of fact check, that was the stat which struck me as intriguing. There are a LOT of Chinese cars, trucks and buses being produced with rates on the rise, from the likes of BYD, BAIC etc. Oh and don't try to take a quick trip around the Gigafactory, Elon says it takes 2 hours if you don't stop, to see it all. And he & JB said it was only one third built. When finished it will easily be the biggest building on planet earth. That won't be complete for another 4 or 5 years.   1GWh OF ENERGY STORAGE As I talked about on yesterday’s podcast, if you missed it you might want to download that one we discussed more in detail the JB Straubel quotes, but Tesla didn't miss the chance to reiterate the news Tesla’s energy storage production has now reached 1 GWh worldwide. And they want to deploy the next 1GWh within a year, more of that phrase 'exponential growth' from EM. And talking energy, Elon dropped in how he happened to have bought a house opposite where he lives - not sure whether that's to live in or whether that's what you do as a billionaire - but that he had the Solar Roof put on it, and he's so happy with how it looks and works. It doesn't get the headlines but you could see how much Elon wants the Solar Roof to be the default choice of roof covering in the future, and he talked about it wanting to last 50 years.   MODEL Y This was never meant to be the forum for major announcements about any of those things but inevitably we heard snippets of info. There was a new silhouette image of the Model Y, just the front, but the fanboys and fangirls loved it. He reiterated Twitter claims of a model Y reveal date of March 2019, with production commencing in H1 2020.   ROADSTER The surprise of the Roadster unveil at the Semi event took the air out of the room at the time, but it gets better. There was laughter when Elon called the car he revealed last year the "base Roadster" and said “it’s gonna have a SpaceX options package.” So that's an improvement on 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds, Top Speed of 250mph and 620 mile range. I also thought it was interesting, and this doesn't get reported because Elon often says a 'thing' which gets all the headlines, but the sentence he says next can be more powerful. He said combustion technology has a halo effect on all ICE cars because it still owns the records, but he wants the Roadster to be the best, full stop. The fastest accelerating, the quickest, the best on the track, and the longest range between adding fuel. He said once an electric car bests combustion for everything then it's game on. Or rather, game over for gas.   SEMI RE-DESIGN Elon did say the semi would get a redesign, where in Europe we have to use the cab-over-engine design to meet regulations on total length of truck. He also said the range would be beyond what anyone thinks is possible. He confirmed the finalised, single design would work in North America, Europe, China, and the rest of the world.   MODEL 3 TEST DRIVES If you're lucking enough to live in an area with a Model 3 on display, you're already doing better than most, and certainly better than here in Europe. But Elon announced he wanted a Model 3 at every Tesla store, and next some cars for test drives. That's in the next two months. What model do you think they would put out for test drives? A basic 35k model, a fully spec'd model, a dual motor (let's call it the 3D) or the full beans performance P3D model? Either way I don't think just anyone will get a test drive, either existing S and X owners, or even just Model 3 reservation holders, to dissuade them from cancelling.   COMPACT TESLA I love how an innocent question can be huge news. Will there be a compact-sized Tesla? One to take on the VW ID range, the Golf buying market? Oh yes says Elon, within 5 years. So watch out Golf, or Ford Focus, or Vauxhall Astra, or Audi A3.   ELON WANTS TO GET BETTER AT 'TIME' “I do think I have an issue with time. This is something I’m trying to get better at. I’m a naturally optimistic person. I’m trying to recalibrate these estimates as much as possible.”   AUTOPILOT He said he has been up until 1am last night testing Autopilot. Isn't that a fascinating insight? Autopilot features were said to “exponentially” improve over the next six-twelve months. He even confirmed that Tesla plans to bring back free Autopilot trials.   TESLA BODYSHOP Domenick at InsideEV's described it best when he pointed out: "Tesla service centres will double over the next year, Musk mentioned that they will be adding Tesla body shop repair locations. These would be attached, mostly, to existing service centres, with the top 10 metro areas in the US getting one by the end of the month. Saying that this would create a huge improvement in both time and cost of body repair claiming, incredibly, that they would be able to achieve same-day repair in a lot of cases."   35K MODEL 3 DELIVERED FIRST QUARTER OF 2019 We will honor that obligation” to deliver at that price, he said, “and we would do so now if it was physically possible.”   MODEL 3 AND THIRD ASSEMBLEY LINE He said the third general assembly line in its Fremont, California, plant will come online soon, ensuring production will hit 5,000 cars per week by the end of June. "All Model 3 production lines have demonstrated capability of producing 500 cars per day". If you remember 5,000/week was the target for end of 2017 but it's now looking like it might actually happen by the end of Q2, the end of June is 23 days time. Line 3 was confirmed to be more efficient than Lines 1 and 2.   SUPERCHARGER EXPANSION 9,969 Superchargers Globally Today, a whisker away from 10,000. The Supercharger V3 will be ready by the end of the year, and when ready, the expansion rate will be increased to get more of the V3's out there. Elon said the plan is to put them at all the right places so you can drive around the world only on Superchargers. Long term they're working on charging ratios, which was a new term to me, with a charging time ratio on long trips of 6:1, later 8 or 10:1 (currently around 4.5:1). On the earnings call, but not in my notes from yesterday, was the charge rate of 200-250kW.   CASH FLOW POSITIVE I was watching the live stream, which was super late here, on Ben Sullins YouTube channel, he was live streaming it but also had himself picture-in-picture in the corner of the screen offering some commentary. And when this came up, i think he punched the air. Or at least clapped. Cash. Flow. Positive. Something Tesla has claimed in the past would happen but never did, however Elon carefully chose his words to say they'd be cash flow positive and GAAP net income positive in Q3 & Q4 of 2018. He was careful to say "expecting" which backed off the word "definitely" he's used previously. Elon also said he doesn't expect to raise any capital during the year through debt or equity.   CHINESE PRESENCE I got the feeling they weren't meant to talk about China, but it happened! They confirmed Shanghai as the rumours suggested for Giga there, and all operations under one roof. From raw materials in, to complete cars out. It follows the very recent news that China is now allowing EV makers to build facilities there without needed a joint venture with a domestic company. Tesla's revenue in China has risen from $319 million annually in 2016 to over $2 billion in 2017, with a presence there they will soon avoid import tariffs. Oh and not to forget Europe, they're deciding the location. And in total, they see a need for 12 worldwide Gigafactgories.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Tuesday 15th May 2018. MERCEDES' EQ WILL DEFINE AN ELECTRIC ECOSYSTEM As you may have seen on the recent Fully Charged show, the Mercedes EQ C is in the final stages of testing, in fact the body is so complete it's driving around in camouflage panels. So they're behind Jaguar but ahead of sister company Audi with the e-tron Quattro and BMW with the iX3. And it seems the EQ brand is central to their plans for electric cars. I did notice, as a keen F1 fan as well as Formula E, sometime ago now Mercedes added "EQ Power" to the side of their cars. "Putting the Mercedes line-up of full- electric vehicles under the EQ umbrella is meant to shine a light on the automaker's technical competence, says Britta Seeger, Mercedes-Benz global sales and marketing boss" according to Automotive News. But perhaps more importantly than clear branding they also REALLY want you to test drive one. And that means having one. Which sounds obvious but when you turn up a dealership, for any maker, and ask to test drive an electric car...you get mixed results. "Mercedes is working with dealers globally to set up test-drive events. So far, the events are with plug-in hybrid models and sibling brand Smart's electric vehicle. Dealers in Europe have been asked to keep one or two hybrid models on hand for test-drive experiences, Seeger said." I can imagine sections of the showroom different colours or styles for the EQ cars. However that might not be the best option. I wonder sometimes if they're making life harder by putting their cars in silos, especially those which are based on platforms which will also see combustion variants like the BMW and Mercedes. So rather than going into a showroom and there being a special area, EVs will almost need to be less special. Here are all our models, oh and these are electric. Comparing apples with apples if you like. On the flip side, you could argue that Tesla has done such a good job at stealing those big spenders, you could argue you should have electric specialists surrounded by only EVs. Automotive News continue: “Tesla sold an estimated 28,800 top-of-the-line Model S sedans in 2017, more than triple the number of BMW 7-series sedans sold and nearly double the sales of the Mercedes-Benz S class. Both the Mercedes and BMW large cars are down significantly from their U.S. highs.”   BAIC GROUP SELECTS MAGNA TO DEVELOP ELECTRIC VEHICLE ARCHITECTURE And whilst US and European EVs makers are just getting started, their production numbers are dwarfed by some Chinese companies. One of those being BAIC. As they say, they're not mucking around! Many of those companies have long held ambitions to conquer the domestic market, learn their lessons, and then sell their cars to USA and the rest of the world. Whilst that idea was seen as far-fetched by some recent research has show that, in terms of electric cars, 'Made In China' is not a problem. And so the news came through yesterday that one of those big Chinese manufacturers, BAIC, is moving into Europe. BAIC's EC series was the World's #1 selling EV car in 2017 - and only available in China. The Austrian Magna, those who make fully built cars for companies who need extra capacity for instance, have signed a deal with BAIC. And yes, Magna are the ones making the Jaguar I-PACE. The luxury I-PACE. “BAIC Group (Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co., Ltd.) and Magna today announced that they will jointly develop a next-generation smart electric vehicle architecture for the Chinese market. China is currently the leading market for electric mobility in the world, with around 700,000 electrified cars sold in 2017. By 2020, the number of all-electric cars on China’s roads is forecast to reach around five million, due in part to subsidies and quotas by the Chinese government. Magna was selected to be BAIC’s partner due to its innovative and cost-effective solutions throughout its complete vehicle manufacturing and engineering services as well as its full-scale electronic/electrical architecture and lightweight technologies"   ELECTRIC VEHICLES MAKE DRIVERS CALMER, HAPPIER AND MORE FOCUSED A new study undertaken by LEVC (London EV Company) has shown that the quieter driving environment of an electrically-driven vehicle can have significant mental health benefits. The work, in conjunction with academics from the University of York, has been released during Mental Health Awareness Week (14-20 May) which is focused on stress and stress reduction, and shows that moving from driving diesel to electric vehicles improves mental well-being for commercial vehicle drivers. In a world first, LEVC (London EV Company) commissioned an experiment to monitor mental activity - among a host of other physical factors - of drivers in both the new electrically-driven taxi and previous diesel model to find out if the quiet cabin of the state-of-the-art electric vehicle had an effect on the wellbeing of hard-working taxi drivers. The test was designed and executed by acoustics expert Dr Duncan Williams of the University of York and took place in central London with four professional cabbies taking to the wheel of both vehicles and undertaking a series of trial drives. An electroencephalogram, often referred to as a 'brain cap', was placed on the head of each driver. Electrodes within the cap monitored brain activity over a set route through the capital, giving previously unseen insight into the differing mental states between drivers of electric and diesel vehicles. Heart rate and audio readings were also taken too. Chris Gubbey, CEO of LEVC said: "Our aim with the TX was to make the world's most advanced taxi, a vehicle that would not only help reduce urban air pollution but improve comfort and convenience for passengers and drivers across the globe. We are delighted to find we have made a vehicle that is now proven to also make cabbies' working lives better. "Given that cabbies spend up to 12hrs a day driving, the vehicle is their office. We owe them a duty of care to provide the best working environment - and this study shows that driving our electric cab has a clear benefit for mental wellbeing. Next year we will be introducing a new electric light commercial vehicle, which means that the positive health implications of going electric will be extended to professional van drivers too." Unlike the previous taxi, the electric taxi’s multi-filter system works to remove gases and particles from the incoming air. In addition, an in-built air quality sensor also automatically closes the external air intake if it detects increased levels of pollution in the outside air - protecting passengers, and the driver, from the capital's often poor-quality air.   TESLA REGISTERS SHANGHAI ELECTRIC CAR FIRM AHEAD There's a new name in Electric Cars. It's, ahem, Tesla! Tesla has registered a new electric car firm in Shanghai, as China prepares to scrap rules on capping foreign ownership of new-energy vehicle (NEV) ventures" report Reuters. "The new company will focus on electric cars, spare parts and batteries, according to the filing. The new company, Tesla (Shanghai) Co Ltd, was registered on May 10, according to a filing with the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System seen by Reuters. Tesla Motors HK Limited as the sole shareholder in the firm." Elon Musk recently said he'll be naming the chosen location for the first Chinese factory which means they won't have to face import duty on cars made in the US and sold in China, plus that the Chinese Gigafactory will have all functions under one roof.   TESLA UNVEILS NEW LARGE POWERPACK PROJECT FOR GRID BALANCING IN EUROPE Tesla are on a roll recently releasing new videos, yesterday we say the official Tesla twitter account release details of another installation of Powerpacks, this time in Belgium and designed to balance the grid. In case anyone has forgotten the Gigafactory isn't just flat out making battery packs for all three Tesla models, but also the expanding part of the Tesla Energy business. 140 Powerpacks in total have been shipped across the Atlantic to make a total of 18.2MW of power output. There will be one coming to the UK soon as well, and they replace gas generators which has previously been used to keep the grid balanced.   HERE'S THE MEMO ELON MUSK JUST SENT ANNOUNCING A MAJOR SHAKE-UP AT TESLA "Tesla CEO Elon Musk told employees Monday that the company plans to "flatten" its structure as it works to improve communication and trim activities "that are not vital" to its success" says CNBC. "To ensure that Tesla is well prepared for the future, we have been undertaking a thorough reorganization of our company. As part of the reorg, we are flattening the management structure to improve communication, combining functions where sensible and trimming activities that are not vital to the success of our mission. To be clear, we will continue to hire rapidly in critical hourly and salaried positions to support the Model 3 production ramp and future product development."   MAYOR SETS 2020 TIMETABLE FOR LONDON ‘ZERO EMISSION ZONES’ The Mayor of London has brought forward his aim to establish a series of ‘Zero Emission Zones’ in parts of the capital by five years, in the final draft of the London Environment Strategy published last week" says Air Quality News. "City Hall will seek to implement zero emission zones in town centres from 2020 and aim to deliver a zero emission zone in central London from 2025."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Tuesday 10th April 2018. AUDI E-TRON VISION GT When is a concept, not a concept? When is vapourware, not vapourware? The Audi e-tron Vision Gran Turismo was developed for virtual races on PS4, but now Audi is making the car a reality in conjunction with Formula E. You’ll first see it with the race in Rome this Saturday, April 14, deployed as a race taxi. Electric Vehicle News reports: “The customers and guests of the brand with the four rings will be able to experience Formula E’s city circuits as passengers in the Audi e-tron Vision Gran Turismo starting at the race in Rome (April 14). Employees at Audi’s pre-production center developed and produced this one-of-a-kind car within the space of just eleven months based on the example of the Audi e-tron Vision Gran Turismo from the “Gran Turismo” PlayStation game. The Audi e-tron Vision Gran Turismo has permanent all-wheel drive as well, the fully electric e-tron quattro all-wheel drive with variable power distribution. Three electric motors, each with output of 200 kW, propel the concept car. Two electric motors drive the rear axle and the third one the front axle, using individual components from the future Audi e-tron. System output is 600 kW (815 hp). With a curb weight of 1,450 kilograms the electric race car has a power to weight ratio of 1.78 kilograms per horsepower with ideal 50:50 percent weight distribution between the front and the rear axle. The Audi e-tron Vision Gran Turismo accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 2.5 seconds.” “This car incorporates numerous elements of our new design language such as the inverted single frame in the vehicle’s color that will be typical for our new e-tron models,” Marc Lichte, chief designer at Audi, says. “Although the design of a virtual vehicle allows much greater freedom and the creation of concepts which are only hard to implement in reality, we did not want to put a purely fictitious concept on wheels. Our aim was a fully functional car.” Just one final thought for the ex-race driver tasked with piloting this at speed – do not crash it.   MORE DYSON Of all the future car projects, the Dyson company led by James Dyson, and best known for vacuum cleaners, seems to have grabbed a lot of attention. And from a practical point of you, once you get past lazy headlines about their cars “not sucking”, they’re very experienced in making consumer products. And battery products too, because they don’t sell those vacuum cleaners with cords any more – they’re all batteries. In an interview with Wired: Wired: Your development of solid-state batteries is key to your electric car plans, isn't it? JD:Diesel-gate and the pollution in cities was the big changer, to the point where we should be banning diesels immediately from cities. France and Britain have decided to ban internal combustion engines from 2040, so it is happening. The public want electric cars, I think, despite worries about range. And the fact that they are quiet - and by the way we ought to make tyres quieter - there are so many things that we can improve it will make the public really want electric cars. Wired: You now have some heavy hitters in automotive at Dyson, such as Ian Robertson, former BMW board member... JD:He just left BMW, but has been on our board for number of years. He had to leave our board when we announced we were doing a car, but I hope he will now come back on the board. We have a very good relationship with BMW. Crucially, we have taken on people from the car industry and mixed them with our people, who are naïve in this area, but inventive - which i think is a really good mix, actually. Wired: Finally, you say you that your cars are going to be "radically different". Can you tell us anything at all about they will be so different? JD:No! When we started this four years ago, Tesla was still very small, diesel-gate hadn't happened and no one was really considering electric cars. So we are not Johnny-come-latelies on this. We had seen it coming, invested in batteries and started our project.   JAGUAR I-PACE MAKER WORKS WITH CHINESE You know that gorgeous Jaguar I-PACE, well it’s actually being outsourced for the production to a company called Magna. And now Automotivenews reports: “BAIC Group (Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co., Ltd.) and Magna today announced that they will jointly develop a next-generation smart electric vehicle architecture for the Chinese market. China is currently the leading market for electric mobility in the world, with around 700,000 electrified cars sold in 2017. By 2020, the number of all-electric cars on China’s roads is forecast to reach around five million, due in part to subsidies and quotas by the Chinese government. Magna Steyr was selected to be BAIC’s partner due to its innovative and cost-effective solutions throughout its complete vehicle manufacturing and engineering services as well as its full-scale electronic/electrical architecture and lightweight technologies. The agreement was signed on April 8, 2018”.   CONGRATULATIONS ZOE Gilles Normand, SVP, Electric Vehicle Business Unit at Renault celebrated the 100,000th full electric Zoe: “Today is a special day. I had the pleasure of participating in the celebration of the 100,000th Renault ZOE that was manufactured in Flins (France). Already 100,000 customers have fallen in love with ZOE! Launched in 2012, ZOE was fitted with a bigger, 41 kWh battery in 2016, allowing it to go even further. And for enhanced driving pleasure we equipped ZOE this month with a more powerful engine, the R110 (80 kW).In addition of being the leading electric vehicle in Europe for the third consecutive year in 2017, ZOE has been voted Best Electric Car by different juries composed of automotive journalists an impressive number of times throughout Europe. But today, I especially want to thank the thousands of Renault employees and the entire dealer network that have worked hard for making this happen”.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Tuesday 27th February 2018. Coming up today we’ll talk about Tesla being on the rise and Mercedes-Benz heading to China…   JAGUAR I-PACE LIVESTREAM DATE CONFIRMED   …but first, we’re not far away from the official launch of the first real, serious competitor to the Tesla Model X – The Jaguar I-PACE.   We’ve seen videos of them testing in California and also extreme Winter testing, which is a nod to the work Jaguar have done to minimise the issue of cold weather reducing range. This is due to an advanced battery thermal management system taking care of that 90kWh battery. It’s 4 wheel drive, motors front and rear of equal size (unlike Teslas) generating 395hp.   The headline charge time is 0-80% in 40 mins using a 100kW charger…if you can find one of them!   The live stream of the event will be 1pm Eastern, 6pm UK time, 7pm Central European Time. 5 days later it makes its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show.   According to Jaguar: “Since revealing the I-Pace Concept in 2016, we have been counting down to this moment. The all-electric I-Pace is not only a pioneer within our business, it promises to revolutionize the industry. Never before have I been so excited for a launch –the world is watching with great anticipation and I cannot wait for the world to see everything we have achieved with this car.”   If you’d like to read more about the I-PACE between now and launch, I’d recommend the most recent issue of Autovolt magazine.   https://carbuzz.com/news/look-out-tesla-jaguar-i-pace-production-ev-to-premiere-this-week   VOLVO CALL TIME ON NEW ENGINE DEVELOPMENT   Lead time and life cycles of cars and their parts is one clue to where companies think they’ll be at points of time in the future. From your mobile phone which probably get an annual refresh to a 4-cylinder petrol engine that might have a 6-7 product cycle. Now Volvo has said that the current crop of petrol engines will be the last it develops, which indicates where Volvo thinks the money will be in 7 years and what time of cars they’ll be selling.   Volvo were the first major manufacturer to commit to every model being electrified by 2019. However we expect to see them making the most of their investment in engines, and add soft hybrid or full hybrid power to those. Volvo are expected to add up to 3 all electric models in the next three years, not including their spin-off Polestar.   http://www.thedrive.com/news/18788/volvo-is-done-developing-gasoline-engines-report-says       TESLA ON THE RISE AGAIN   Tesla’s market capitalisation topped $60bn yesterday, as shares on Monday 26th Feb over $357.
