This week's episode is something I wanted to share from a podcast that I listen to that is centered around the Summer Olympics. And on that episode Summer Sanders, Olympic Gold Medalist, talks about 3 key questions that helped her perform at her best. Why are you competing? Who are you doing it for? Who loves you? I am sharing this because those 3 simple questions are gold.
It's moments before the biggest competition of your life… you're rattled by something your coach just said… you have one minute alone to yourself before go time. You look in the mirror… What do you say to yourself to get in the zone – to ground yourself – before the race begins? On Day 13 of The Game Inside The Games, Nastia Liukin and Dr. Michael Gervais sit down with Summer Sanders, a two-time gold medalist and renowned television commentator. They delve into the evolution of the Olympic experience from Summer's 1992 games to the present, exploring the impact of social media, technology, and mental health awareness on athletes today. Summer reflects on the pivotal moments that defined her career, including the three powerful questions she asked herself in the mirror before her gold medal race. They also dig into what makes a great coach, the crucial role of parenting in shaping an athlete's journey, and what Summer believes is the real “game inside The Games” for Olympians today. Having been to 13 Olympic games, Summer has a unique inside perspective on the state of The Games today, and what it takes for an athlete to excel. In this episode of The Skeptical Shaman podcast, host Rachel White (of TOTEM Readings) chats with Summer Sanders (of Sabai Studio). Summer shares her experience of owning and managing a brick and mortar healing center in Chicago's West Loop: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Things have changed for small business owners since the onset of Covid, and this is doubly (if not triply) true for those that deal in the Business of Woo. Summer details how this shift has forced her to shift as well, ultimately deciding to change her business model and move to Florida later this summer. In this episode, Rachel and Summer pull back the proverbial kimono on what the last 4-5 years have been like for your friendly neighborhood healer, and how we can all best support the sincere, knowledgable practitioners to keep on keeping on. They also dive into how best to work with a healer, maximizing your ROI while simultaneously making your practitioner's day a little bit more manageable. The bottom line? Things have changed. A lot. And with that change, healers across modalities (from Feng Shui to Reiki to Tarot and more) are experiencing exponential change fatigue. So, be kind, rewind, and support your local practitioner if you want to continue to benefit from their offerings!LINKS:Rachel's Website: https://www.totemreadings.comTOTEM Readings Substack: https://totemrach.substack.comRachel's Other Links: https://linktr.ee/totemrachPlease support the Sponsors of The Skeptical Shaman Podcast:The TOTEM Flower Essence Deck: https://a.co/d/gw16LsGThe TOTEM Tarot Deck: https://www.amazon.com/TOTEM-Tarot-Deck-Rachel-White/dp/0578980126The TOTEM Flower Essences: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TotemReadingsATXSummer Sanders Links: Website: https://sabaistudio.orgIG: https://www.instagram.com/summersanders_official/Please note: The views and opinions expressed on The Skeptical Shaman do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Summer is a physical therapist, reiki practitioner, Feng Shui consultant and much, much more.In this episode, we explore the dynamic and magical world of Feng Shui: the system of laws that govern spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of energy (qi). While Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice-- much like acupuncture and Chinese medicine-- it's inherently useful for the unique challenges of our modern world, offering energetic relief from frustration, stagnation and even basic b*tch burnout. We dig into the bagua map that governs the quadrants of our homes, offices, and yes-- even energy bodies, as well as what every listener can do "on day one" to shift their own energies in the direction of their dreams. With Feng Shui, little adjustments can generate big changes-- and even wholesale transformations-- so proceed intentionally! And, of course, we pull a card from our TOTEM Tarot Deck, revealing the unique presence of Feng Shui in the realm of tarot.TOTEM Readings website (Rachel's practice): https://www.totemreadings.comTOTEM Tarot Deck (card used in episode): https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578980126?ref=myi_title_dpSummer's website: https://sabaistudio.orgPlease note: The views and opinions expressed on The Skeptical Shaman do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Series - 8We are setting the “Gold Standard” for skin health and advocating for sun safety in this must-listen episode. Get advice from 4-time melanoma survivor and Olympic Gold medalist Summer Sanders.Growing up in California, learning to swim from an early age and eventually training for competition and the Olympics, gave Summer plenty of opportunities to be outside in the sun. Over time, this led to her hearing the words “you have malignant melanoma”. From that moment, Summer realized the deficit that exists when it comes to education and promoting sun protection and skin cancer awareness. She decided it was time to use her experience to bring the spotlight to sun safety and save lives.Today, she shares her experience of her first diagnosis in 2014 to the present day and why she feels so strongly about sun protection and being an advocate.Summer has accomplished so many amazing things in her life, winning not only two gold medals in the 1992 Olympics for swimming, but also being a TV and sports personality, a mom to 2 incredible children and also the wife of an Olympic skier. I wanted to include her in this series because she has also faced melanoma four times and continues to thrive in her life. She shows her determination and resilience in this fight against a frightening diagnosis.Together, let's educate ourselves and others on skin cancer and take action to advocate for our health. This week, Aleen is joined by Nickelodeon legend and author of his new book Happy People Are Annoying, Josh Peck! The episode kicks off with Aleen and Josh reminiscing on their childhoods and that time a few years ago when they were both on an influencer trip in Mexico together (!?). Josh then tells us about his book, which includes lessons that he learned from being the “chubby funny kid” (aka Josh Nichols on Drake & Josh) and how losing 100+ pounds is something that no one can seem to get over. Then, we chat about life lessons that Josh hopes to teach his son and how standing in his own way caused him to miss out on some career opportunities (like a part in one of the most iconic movies of all time). Finally, Josh and Aleen confess their favorite shows growing up. Everyone remembers Summer Sanders right?

When panelists are attempting to fill in the blanks on a giant purple piece of wood named Billy The Answer Head, it's hard not to get romantic about game shows. Olympic gold medalist Summer Sanders and a slew of children with increasingly confusing talents try to stump a panel of Nickelodeon “celebrities” in this classic 90s contest. And yes, there's a lot of slime.
SUMMER SANDERS' star burns bright. She's been intimate with the Olympic experience since she earned her four Olympic medals back in 1992. Summer has been to nearly every Olympic Games, summer and winter, since her '92 star-turn as a network commentator and/or ambassador. We sat down with Summer to get her perspective on the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, and she had a lot of wisdom to share. Summer even put her Swim Nerd cap on regarding the 4×100 mixed medley relay–about which a lot of Team USA Olympic Alumni have had much to say. 2020 has certainly been filled with rough waters. In order to successfully navigate ourselves through the swells, we need to pop our heads out of the water and pivot our trajectory. As a two-time Olympic gold medalist in swimming, Summer Sanders knows a thing or two about streamlining through waves to find success. Join Summer and Sue Yannaccone, Executive Vice President of Coldwell Banker Realty, as they discuss the power behind the pivot. Summer will share her experience with overcoming obstacles in training for the Olympics, finding her footing in the world of broadcast and how she has applied those lessons to life on dry land. Be prepared to be inspired and to take notes on tactics to implement into your business approach as you adjust strategy in this unpredictable climate. This live session will field questions from the audience and provide opportunities for interaction.
In Part 2, Summer Sanders talks about her other childhood dream, a career in television. Summer shares a couple of stories about meeting her non-swimming childhood idol (Michael Jordan), and a bold encounter with another TV personality (Ahmad Rashad) that would lead to her initial role on "Inside Stuff". Summer then travels back in time to dissect her Gold Medal winning wall-touch in the 200m butterfly in Barcelona. Summer also reflects on when she was fired by Donald Trump. Finally, Summer reveals two profoundly personal stories about running the 2013 Boston Marathon, crossing the finish line just minutes before the two bombs detonated, and her ultimately completing her degree from Stanford University 24 years after leaving Palo Alto.
She put the "Summer" in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. Swimming superstar Summer Sanders claimed four medals as a 19-year-old, including two gold medals. Sanders was part of Team USA's gold-medal 4x100 medley relay team, while also claiming an individual gold medal in the 200 butterfly in a riveting finish. In the first of a two-part podcast, Summer talks about COVID-19's impact on the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the Sanders' family's year living abroad, her first trip back to Barcelona after the 1992 Games, the unique names of Summer and her son Spider & more!
"I really need athletes and coaches and executives within national governing bodies to understand... there is no gray area." - Summer Sanders. We agree. There is no gray area when it comes to clean sport. There is also no gray area when it comes to how much we loved this conversation with Summer Sanders. She is exactly the person you hope she would be - real, funny, relatable, and an absolute inspiration in sport and in life. She also happens to be a 4-time Olympic medalist (including 2 golds) and has an equally impressive career in sports commentating. Kara and Shanna lead this conversation and cover many aspect's of Summer's story from her childhood growing up in California, splitting time between divorced parents who both shaped her as a person, to her meteoric rise to multiple Olympic gold medals by the age of 19 and to her extensive resume in sports broadcasting. Summer shares so many great stories in this episode. She talks about how barely missing an Olympic team at the age of 15 was exactly the failure she needed at the time. She describes every detail of her final gold-medal winning race in Barcelona and what it was like standing on the podium while the Star Spangled Banner played. She discusses her life-long dream of being on TV and how that led to her career in broadcasting after the 1992 Olympics. Summer gets emotional talking about her experiences as a runner including her first marathon in NYC and running Boston in 2013, where she left the finish line just 15 minutes before the first bomb went off on Boylston. Of course, we also ask her about the clean sport culture in swimming, when she became aware of doping herself, and how she dealt with it during her career. Then, we close with her hopes for the future of sport which are as black and white as they can be when it comes to this very important topic. Summer is a hero to many in the pool and in front of the camera. We were absolutely honored to have her join us.
In this Gold Medal Minute takeover of the SwimSwam Podcast we have Olympic swimming icon and television star Summer Sanders. Summer was the most decorated swimmer of the 1992 Olympic Games, earning four medals, two gold, one sliver, and a bronze. At that time she was the first female to make the U.S. Olympic Team in four individual events since Shirley Babashoff did it back in 1976. At Stanford University Summer won nine NCAA Titles and helped the Cardinal to an NCAA Team Title in only two years. She gave up her eligibility after her sophomore year. (We didn't say turning pro back then.) Summer's career burned white-hot. She accomplished a great deal in a very small window, one quad, 1988-92. The big moment, the ah hah moment, came at the tender age of 15 when she got 3rd at the 1988 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 400 IM. From that one point forward Summer medaled at all international events representing Team USA. While Summer gained fame at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, her star really rose throughout her 25-year TV career. Her credits are too long to list, but she's worked with nearly everyone, CBS, ESPN, NBC, MSNBC, FOX SPORTS, MTV, etc.. However, I think her biggest fans grew out of her Nickelodeon show FIGURE IT OUT. “Everyone is a runner. Some just chose not to run or don't know how to start.” - Coach JohnWelcome to Episode 11 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring running coach, consultant, and unofficial celebrity marathon pacer, John Honerkamp. We're in the thick of Fall race season, so I thought it would be the perfect time to interview Coach John. If you're a runner in NYC, you've most likely heard his name somewhere, as he has coached runners of all ages and abilities in the area for more than 20 years. John worked for the New York Road Runners (NYRR) for six years, and created a number of programs including the NYRR virtual trainer, NYRR group training, NYRR pace team and NYRR race predictor. He co-founded the November Project in NYC, and also is known for training and pacing celebrities in the NYC marathon, including Karlie Kloss, Caroline Wozniaki, Apolo Ohno, and Summer Sanders. In 2015, John started his own coaching and running-related consulting firm, J. R. Honerkamp, LLC.John was kind enough to come over to my apartment, and we recorded at my rickety kitchen table (which, in hindsight, was not the best location for acoustics…so my apologies for the sound issues). I loved hearing about his upbringing in a large family and being introduced to the NYC running scene at such a young age, and how his enthusiasm for running and later on, coaching, has continued for years to come. Even though he often paces celebrities, he clearly loves sharing his knowledge of and passion for the sport with absolutely everyone. Our discussion skewed a bit more towards running/coaching than nutrition, but I think you'll enjoy John's entertaining stories and words of running wisdom, especially my listeners who are currently in marathon training mode. A great listen as you get ready for NYC or any other race this season!Follow and learn more about John:John's Website: https://runkamp.comFollow John on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter John featured recently in Runner's World and The Wall Street Journal Other Announcements:Please help keep this podcast ad-free by visiting my Patreon PagePlease show your support by leaving a rating and/or review on iTunes Music credit: Joseph McDadePhoto credit: Ben GrossHave nutrition questions, a guest or topic request, or any other feedback? Ironically The Waldo Moment serves a stepping stone between episodes, much like the supporting character to her political opponents. Waldo is a great lesson on giving television characters too much power, and how our gullibility frequently gets us into trouble politically. Nick and Trent travel back in time to the greatest decade of life as we know it: THE 1990s! An era when MJ was the king, the floor was lava, and the girls had cooties. We were able to cover quite a lot about the 90s during the episode. There are a few things we left out simply because that decade was too packed full of totally tubular vibes and there wasn't enough time. Join us on the journey back to a simpler time when the colors were vibrant, the president was a player and Summer Sanders was steaming up the TV screen. The dream of the 90s is alive in Another S****y Podcast.

Erik Schlopy, 3x Olympic Skier and former World Cup ski racer joins The Brink of Midnight Podcast. Erik Schlopy is a walking miracle and may even be part super hero. "Schlopes" is a three-time Olympic alpine skier for Team USA, World Champion, 7-time National Champion, and last year, was inducted into the USA Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. Considered an innovator for Team USA skiing, he helped establish Team USA's European training base in Austria with teammate Bode Miller and has been credited for advancing the "double stack" structure for ski bindings that allows ski racers to travel at greater speeds. He's also married to one of our previous podcast guests, Olympic swimmer, Summer Sanders. Erik is indestructible. He has not one, but several remarkable comeback stories. He made his second Olympic team cobbling together race wins and points after being ranked dead last in the world. He's experienced crashes that will send chills down your spine, and has come back strong from an unthinkable list of injuries. He's even survived a deadly avalanche in the famed Alaskan Chugach mountains...and that's only a few stories among many. Erik's collection of accomplishments and comebacks will blow you away, but what is perhaps most striking are his abilities to never give up and to let instinct take over when it's needed most. In this conversation, we go on an unreal adventure exploring Erik's journey and hone in on what it takes to both survive and perform when the deck is stacked against you. Sit back, listen, and enjoy the wild ride of Erik's life and hard-earned lessons. You just might leave this conversation feeling a little more like a super hero! Champion swimmer and 1992 Olympic gold medalist, Summer Sanders shares her journey on how she learned to reap the rewards of failure and become a champion. As early as 15 years old, Summer experienced pivotal moments of failure, including losing a race in 1988 that would have taken her to the Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. This loss inspired Summer to a new level in her training, fueling the fire to take herself seriously, value working hard, and understand the need to "practice being great" and no longer fear that greatness within her. Her story is inspiring and her message is clear - fail early and young and see the process of failing not as something to fear, but as a true opportunity to learn and grow. www.summersanders.net www.theotherfwordpodcast.com
Olympic gold medalist swimmer, TV Personality, and philanthropist, Summer Sanders, shares her journey in and out of the pool on THE BRINK OF MIDNIGHT PODCAST. From the time of ditching her floaties to keep up with her older brother, Summer developed a true love of water that took her on an incredible NCAA and Olympic swimming journey and taught her lessons she still draws upon today. Summer's first major turning point was when she, at age 15, "understood her power" and learned how to take life's opportunities into her own hands. After a year of finishing last in many races, she made it to the Olympic Trials and narrowly missed a spot on the team. She doubled down on her vision, earned a full ride scholarship to Stanford University and helped the Cardinals win NCAAs in 1992. Making the 1992 Olympic swimming team, she then gave up the rest of her scholarship eligibility to compete on the Olympic stage in Barcelona, from which she brought home four medals: a bronze (400 medley), a silver (200 medley), and two golds (200 Fly, 4x100 Medley). After hanging up her cap and goggles, Summer launched full-time into her TV career, appearing as a reporter and host for shows on MTV, Nickelodeon, Fox Sports, ABC, NBC, CBS Sports, HLN, MSN, Yahoo Sports and even competing on "Celebrity Apprentice" for charity. Summer's contagious energy and real talk are based on a "perfectly imperfect" life as a working mom, deep commitment to philanthropy, and pursuit of adventure. She reminds us to always lead with passion, but make room for growth along the way. For full show notes, visit: Contact: Connect: @brinkofmidnight (twitter, instagram, and Facebook)

Dimity and Sarah are joined by Summer Sanders, winner of four Olympic medals in swimming who has been a runner for two decades. A mom of two, Summer shares how she shifted from being a serious athlete to a social one (even though Dim and Sarah think her 3-hours-and-change marathons are plenty serious!). Joe Peta is the author of, "Trading Bases, A Story About Wall Street, Gambling, and Baseball. He was a fifteen-year all-star Wall Street veteran trader, but decided to give up that lifestyle. Instead, he chose to improve on Moneyball's famed sabermetrics to place bets that would beat Vegas odds on Major League Baseball games. He ended up making a 41% profit over the 2011 season. Peta shares his strategies with Jason. He believes there is a far greater chance of making money betting on baseball than on football or basketball. Peta also talks about the influences Bill James and Nate Silver had on him and his work. On the financial side, Peta explains Dick Fuld's rough charm as CEO of Lehman Brothers. As a former Lehman employee, he think the U.S. should have rescued Lehman. Now, it looks like Las Vegas should turn to Wall Street for ideas on ways to increase interest, traffic, and, ultimately, bets in their sports books. Raised in West Chester, PA by a first generation Italian-American father who adopted baseball as a symbol of his love of America, Joe Peta quickly learned the joy of following the sport --- and the pain of being a 1970s-era Phillies fan. By the time he was a teenager, Joe felt certain that his heroes Mike Schmidt, Larry Bowa, Steve Carlton, et al would one day be his co-workers. While his father instilled a love of baseball in him, sadly, Joe inherited his mother's throwing arm, so by the time he was in college he turned his career ambitions toward the glamorous and fast-paced life of a Certified Public Accountant. His new heroes were men like Bill James and Warren Buffett and Joe parlayed his love of numbers into an MBA from Stanford University. Even in business school, sports were never far from his mind. At Stanford, Joe penned columns in The Stanford Daily and The Reporter that earned him a following in spite of the constant references to Melrose Place, and his turning down the opportunity to interview campus golfer Tiger Woods to fruitlessly pursue an interview with Olympic Gold Medal winning swimmer Summer Sanders. In 2011, while recovering from a massive leg injury which curtailed his trading career on Wall Street, Joe began writing Trading Bases, A Story About Wall Street, Gambling, and Baseball. Joe lives in San Francisco with his wife and two daughters.
