It was fun to sit down with Peggy Fletcher Stack about her time at Sunstone and Mark Hofmann. Peggy Fletcher Stack is a senior religion reporter at the Salt Lake Tribune with over three decades of experience. Peggy, also a co-host of the Tribune's weekly "Mormon Land" podcast, discussed her extensive career, offering insights into her work, her background, and some of the pivotal moments she's covered. The conversation quickly delved into the origins of her career, her time at the Sunstone organization, and even her connection to a notorious historical event. https://youtu.be/jI3Y_aw9mek Don't miss our other conversations with Peggy: https://gospeltangents.com/people/peggy-fletcher-stack/ Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Peggy's long tenure in religion reporting at the Tribune spans 34 years. Before joining the paper, she was involved with Sunstone magazine and was the originator of the Sunstone Symposium. Recounting its beginnings, Peggy explained that as young people working on the magazine, they needed material to publish. She conceived the idea of holding a symposium where people could present, providing content for the magazin. Despite skepticism from some who felt they were "just kids," the first symposium in the late 1970s or early 1980s was successful, leading it to become an annual event that has continued for over 40 years. Peggy noted that Sunstone often struggled financially but ultimately persevered. Peggy's early career included a period spent freelancing in Kenya. In 1985-1986, shortly after getting married, she and her husband used their wedding money to move to Kenya to do freelance writing and photography. They chose Kenya because it was English-speaking and stable at the time. While they hoped to sell stories, Peggy admitted they didn't sell many. She described it as more of an adventure that provided a reason to travel and learn. She recently returned to Kenya for a conference with the International Association of Religion Journalists (IARJ), a group she helped found in 2012 and now serves as executive director. Sunstone and Mark Hofmann One of the most compelling parts of the early discussion was Peggy's connection to Sunstone and Mark Hofmann bombings. Hofmann, known for forging historical documents related to Mormonism, had his "findings" discussed extensively at Sunstone. Peggy knew Mark Hofmann personally and conducted the only print interview he ever gave. Looking back at that interview, she realized he was lying throughout, something she didn't recognize at the time. Peggy described Hofmann as socially awkward, noting he wouldn't look her in the eye during the interview, which she initially attributed to social skill issues but now sees as a sign he was fabricating information. Remarkably, the Hofmann bombings happened on the same weekend as Peggy's wedding, October 12, 1985. One of the victims, Steve Christensen, was a close friend, a major Sunstone donor, and a columnist. After the bombings, Peggy received calls from national media and initially suspected a business connection. However, when Mark Hofmann himself was injured in a bombing the next day, it became clear the events were tied to the documents. Peggy and her husband were warned they might be in danger, even checking their wedding presents for bombs and staying away from their apartment. This personal connection means Peggy always knows how long it's been since the bombings by her wedding anniversary. Reflecting on that time, she acknowledged her lack of training as a journalist then and the difficulty of knowing Hofmann was lying. Even LDS Church leaders were fooled. Path to Salt Lake Tribune Peggy's path to the Salt Lake Tribune was somewhat unexpected. After her time in Kenya, she and her husband moved to New York City, where she worked various jobs, including editing at a medical ethics think tank, working for the United Methodist Church communications department,

Part 1 of Episode 150! Yay!! And now for something completely different. This episode is a bit of a departure from our regular show. We invite Alex Criddle and Cody Noconi, researchers into the psychedelic origins of Mormonism, to respond to the recent debate on the Mormon Book Reviews channel between ourselves and Mormon apologist, Brian Hales. Brian attempts to provide the apologetic response to the theory that Joseph Smith utilized psychedelics (entheogens) in the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in order to facilitate visionary experiences for the early Saints. Disinformation requires much greater effort than simply stating information so we do our best to debunk his debunking (rebunk the theory?). This one is a long haul so we split it into 2 episodes to make it a little more digestible.   Show notes: Video version: https://youtu.be/3l0L1EHtQOo Support our research and outreach: https://www.patreon.com/SeerStonedProductions Original here: Psychedelics & Early Mormonism Theory Brian Hales Responds on Mormon Book Reviews https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uE7J0y_cPpg Further information: “The Higher Powers of Man” - Frederick M. Smith was a prophet of the RLDS Mormons and paternal grandson of the founder Joseph Smith. In 1918 Frederick published this Ph.D. dissertation breaking down altered states of consciousness from an early psychologist's perspective, specifically, religious states of ‘ecstacy' as he called it. A lengthy chapter devoted to peyote is particularly worth reading. “The Higher Powers: Fred M - Smith and the Peyote Ceremonies” - Shelby Barnes' 1995 paper highlighting the curious psychedelic interests of Frederick M. Smith. While Barnes does not make any direct connections to Joseph Smith and psychedelics, Barnes does note that Frederick's interests were an attempt to find the reliable keys to visionary revelation that his grandfather Joseph had demonstrated. “Restoration and the Sacred Mushroom”  - Dr. Robert Beckstead's seminal research paper presented at the August 2007 Sunstone Symposium. Beckstead's paper was the first to propose the possibility that Joseph Smith used psychedelics to facilitate visionary experiences. “A 1920's Harvard Psychedelic Circle with a Mormon Connection: Peyote Use amongst the Harvard Aesthetes” Alan Piper's 2016 paper highlighting Frederick M. As a believing Mormon engaged in academic apologetics, Hales details what he perceives to be holes in the proposed hypothesis. “The Psychedelic History of Mormonism, Magic, and Drugs” - Cody Noconi's book published in 2021. “Psychedelics as a Means of Revelation in Early and Contemporary Mormonism (Part 1)” Alex Criddle's 2023 paper that was originally presented at the Forms of Psychedelic Life conference at UC Berkeley (April 14-15, 2023). “Psychedelics as a Means of Revelation in Early and Contemporary Mormonism (Part 2)” A continuation of Alex Criddle's 2023 paper. “A Real Spiritual High: In Defense of Psychedelic Mysticism” An enlightening philosophical essay from Alex Criddle. Welcome to an all new Latter Day Struggles Mini Series!  In this series Val and Nathan will be covering in-depth one of Val's recent Sunstone Symposium presentations exploring the psychology around human civilization's tendency to organize themselves into hierarchies. These hierarchies consist of an empowered group whose authority is dictated by selecting a different group over whom they dominate. These disempowered groups are sometimes called “out-groups” or “deviant others”.   In Episode 1 of this series Val and Nathan cover the following:   *** Why societies [countries, corporations, churches, middle schools...just to name a few] organize themselves into a dominating few who find identity and cohesion in their rule over designated disempowered out-groups.  *** How those in power use differences in others to dominate them. ***  How some disempowered ‘out groups' are common throughout time and place [gender, class, race] and also how unique out-groups are arbitrarily selected within micro-cultures.  ***How out-groups come to see themselves as subordinate, weaker, and essentially less-than after generations of oppression and messaging that they were created to be subservient to the dominant. This Friday's Episode 2 [accessed via subscription, link below to subscribe] Val and Nathan will discuss how this concept applies to hierarchal structures in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, both through macro-issues such as their historical and current struggles with institutional patriarchy, racism, and issues around disempowering gender and sexual minorities.   They also break down how within the LDS church there are a variety of more subtle hierarchies and disempowered out-groups that may seem invisible because they are so entrenched in the culture and theology.  These more subtle micro-cultural power dynamics hurt people by communicating that the worth of all souls is unequal in the sight of God. How can you describe to someone what going through a faith transition feels like? And how can you successfully navigate the pain and heartache of a mixed faith marriage? On this week's episode of Mormonish Podcast, coshost Rebecca and Landon sit down with the wonderful Anthony D.Miller to discuss his insights and wisdom on going through his own personal faith journey. Anthony is very well known for a 2022 TedX talk he gave describing a Mormon faith crisis journey. This presentation was monumental in helping others understand the overwhelming nature of going through this type of transition. Anthonly has spoken at Sunstone Symposium, Thrive and been on numerous podcasts to share his thoughts and experiences related to faith crisis, mixed faith marriage, community relationships, and life after deconstruction. Anthony recently launched his own successful podcast called, "Life After Deconstruction" and we encourage everyone to go and listen, you'll be so glad you did. We were thrilled to be able to spend some time talking to Anthony and we know everyone will benefit greatly from what he shares with us and our viewers and listeners.

This is part FIVE of a five part series analyzing Brian McLaren's book “Do I Stay Christian”. In each of these episodes, Val and Nathan go through McLaren's 10 compelling reasons to LEAVE institutionalized Christianity and 10 compelling reasons to STAY. In this episode the two reasons discussed to LEAVE are as follows: 9) Because of its tendency to constrict intellectualism [please jump over to episode 79 of this podcast for a deep dive into the damage done due to constrictive intellectualism and many cognitive biases common to underdeveloped Christian thinking] and 10) Because Christianity is “SHRINKLING” [shrinking+wrinkling]. The two final reasons discussed in this episode to stay Christian are, 9) To Free God from the dangerous image as the angry old white guy full of judgement and wrath, and 10) Because of Fermi's Paradox and the Great Filter [yep…you'll clearly need to tune in to have the first clue about what he means here!!] ***************Val and Nathan respect McLaren's straightforward, honest look at our Christian history and share in his trust that each of us is wise enough to look truth straight in the eye in order to forge our own path towards health and wholeness. Imagine attending an LDS meeting where people from the extremes of belief and practice come together and enjoy one another's company, share their stories, experiences, thoughts, opinions, and struggles, and are met with openness, curiosity, compassion, and non-judgment?  This was our experience at our very first Sunstone Symposium--an annual gathering we just attended with a little bit of anxiety and a lot of curiosity.  In this episode Nathan and Val share more about specific moments that they enjoyed, some very unique kinds of people they met, and why they will not only be back, but why this un-official "General Conference" gave them hope that we as a church are capable of true community.

A MODERN DILEMMA, Chapter 5 of Holy Priesthood Volume 3   Pages 69-77 http://ogdenkraut.com/?page_id=124 Women’s Rights Generally speaking, women have been treated unfairly throughout history. Many of their sacrifices and labors have been unnoticed, forgotten, or never recorded–not only anciently, but also in our own dispensation. So it is no wonder that most of them feel inferior to men and feel they are not entitled to hold the Priesthood. In her Sunstone Symposium paper, Andrea Moore Emmett wrote: Yes, Mormon women know of those nameless pioneer women who broke their china into pieces for the Nauvoo Temple, bore and buried babies on the plains, and sacrificed their hearts to become plural wives. Mormon women know something of Emma and Lucy Mack Smith. But that’s where it ends. Where are all those elusive faces and names of sisters and the individual, intimate stories of the lives they lived? They can be found in unreachable archives and the special collections at the B.Y.U. Library covered with the dust of unuse. The names and faces of women whose real life experiences parallel those of the men. Men whose bigger-than-life stories are told and retold as role models churchwide to our daughters as well as our sons. This week Mormonism and the world (basically) have been captivated by the new Netflix Documentary "Murder Among the Mormons" - which covers the Salt Lake City bombings of 1985, and is currently #2 in the USA on Netflix.  (SPOILER ALERT!!!!) While reactions to the documentary (produced & directed by friends Jared Hess and Tyler Measom) have been universally SUPER positive, many progressive and post-Mormons have expressed a wish that the documentary would have spent more time discussing the role of the Mormon church in: a) creating the environment that gave rise to the bombings, b) attempting to cover up/hide its problematic history, and c) obstruct or hinder the investigation of the bombings. I this epic, 2-part, 6 hour interview with Mormon/Ex-Mormon legend Sandra Tanner, we cover many of the questions/topics/issues that progressive and post-Mormons have been wanting to know about the Mormon church, Mark Hofmann, the bombings, and the investigations, such as: What do we know about Mark Hofmann's childhood and adolescent years? When and how did Mark Hofmann lose his Mormon faith? What are some of the direct and undeniable similarities between Joseph Smith and Mark Hofmann? What can we ascertain about Mark Hofmann's possible motives for forgery? What issues regarding Mormon Church truth claims were being discussed publicly during Mark Hofmann's childhood and adolescence years, and what written materials may have influenced him? What behavior on the part of the Mormon church in the 1960s and 1970s may have served as motivating factors for Hofmann?  Particularly, to what extent did the LDS Church participate in overt deception of its members that could have influenced him to turn on the church? What are Sandra's memories of Hofmann and his close associates like Shannon Flynn, Brent Metcalfe, Curt Bench, Lyn Jacobs, Brent Ashworth, etc.?  Were any of them suspected as accomplices? What do we know about the main Mormon-related Hofmann forgeries, and why were each relevant from a Mormon.history perspective?  How did Hofmann's forgeries intersect with and challenge Mormon church truth claims?  How did they stand to harm the church? What role did the Mormon church play in hiding and/or covering up Hofmann's forgeries? Perhaps most importantly, Sandra recounts the inspiring story of her husband, Jerald Tanner, discovering that Hofmann's Salamander Letter was a forgery a FULL YEAR before the bombings, how she and Jerald fought about his discovery, what Hofmann's reaction was to Jerald's discovery, and how it was received in the larger Mormon studies and news community (spoiler alert: it was largely ignored). Sandra also movingly discusses how she and Jerald were largely ignored and marginalized by the broader Mormon history community, including being denied a display table at Sunstone, and how many Mormon history scholars would take advantage of the Tanner's research without giving them any credit or citations.  She cites as the main reason of this mistreatment her and Jerald's willingness to question Joseph Smith's sincerity - which remains a taboo in the Mormon studies community to this day. Sandra recounts her memories of the bombings and of the investigations. Perhaps most importantly, what responsibility does the Mormon church play in contributing to the environment and led to the bombings? All this, and so much more.  This is a 6 hour interview. Part 1 (4 hours) talks mostly about Sandra's memories during and after the bombings. Part 2 (2 hours) focuses more on Sandra's direct reactions to the documentary Murder Among the Mormons. For your convenience we have created YouTube time codes that will let you know which parts of the videos you can jump to (if you want to jump around or refer certain parts to friends). We hope you enjoy!!!!!!!  And a HUGE thanks to Sandra (and Jerald) Tanner for sharing with us her/their historic insight.  For me, this was a true honor.  MORE TO COME!!!! - John Dehlin (March 10, 2021) P.S.  If you value Sandra and her contributions to Mormon history, please support Sandra Tanner and Utah Lighthouse Ministry with your donations!!! ==================== Part 1 Timecodes: 00:07:13 - Summary of Sandra’s background 00:14:51 - Sandra’s understanding of Mark Hofmann’s early life & beliefs 00:19:39 - Hofmann’s exposure to treasure digging and LDS truth claims 00:32:02 - Parallels between Mark Hofmann and Joseph Smith 00:36:12 - Theories surrounding the Golden Plates & Book of Mormon 00:45:30 - Speculations on Mark Hofmann’s faith crisis 00:48:17 - Sandra discusses Shannon Flynn 00:55:53 - More on Hofmann’s mission, & his research into Mormon history 00:57:03 - Salamander Letter 00:58:50 – Sandra on intentional deception by LDS Church leaders 01:00:58 – Hofmann first comes to Utah Lighthouse Ministry in 1978 to share first known forgery – on the 2nd Anointing 01:06:19 – Mark’s handwriting – juvenile “chicken scratch” 01:07:10 – The beginning of a discussion of Mark Hofmann’s possible motives 01:09:07 – Mark Hofmann’s lack of empathy - callousness with the bombings. 01:12:44 – Mark Hofmann’s ego & his desire to pull off the “ultimate deception” 01:14:23 – Hofmann’s desire to embarrass the church & expose the faults their “power of discernment” 01:18:50 – More comparisons between Joseph Smith and Mark Hofmann – Around their “Ponzi schemes” unraveling into chaos and violence 01:20:56 – Discussion of Anthon transcript - Hofmann’s first major (known) Mormon forgery 01:28:34 – Jerald Tanner first uncovers forgery in 1960s – Oliver Cowdery pamphlet 01:31:21 – Jerald Tanner received pushback on forgery claims - Fawn Brodie and Juanita Brooks state they will continue to use the document 01:35:19 – Discussion of original Anthon transcript 01:39:08 – Hofmann’s Joseph Smith III Succession Forgery 01:45:58 - Hofmann trying to paint Brigham Young in a bad light. 01:52:11 – Brent Ashworth describing Hofmann “fishing” for documents that collectors might want 01:53:01 - Hofmann begins a bidding war over his Joseph Smith III Succession document 01:54:11 - LDS church “front buyers” 01:57:09 – Hofmann’s claim to have the McLellin collection 02:05:19 – Lyn Jacobs & Sandra’s thoughts on his omission from the “Murder Among the Mormons” documentary 02:08:18 – A discussion of frequent questions regarding Hofmann’s sexuality 02:14:09 - Hofmann’s 1825 Letter from Joseph Smith to Josiah Stowell 02:17:42 – What LDS Church leaders knew about Joseph Smith’s use of folk magic and treasure digging 02:21:15 – The Smith family merging of folk magic with Christianity - Hyrum Smith’s use of “magic documents” & Joseph Smith’s use of the “Jupiter Talisman” 02:28:52 – LDS General Authorities consciously sanitizing Mormon church history (Hinckley, Oaks, Turley) 02:31:40 – Church Patriarch Smith showing magical papers at LDS church firesides in the 20th century 02:32:50 – Wilford C. On these episodes with Mormon Stories, we hope to dig deep into Anthony's personal Mormon story including: *What he calls his "literal faith" in the truth claims of the Mormon Church, including using his patriarchal blessing as the literal guidebook for the choices and direction he pursed in life *How his faith began to unravel after he discovered the LDS-published Gospel Topic Essays *How he sought community and healing during his faith crisis, including the founding of a Mormon Spectrum group *How he deconstructed his past beliefs and is reconstructing a sense of spirituality after his faith crisis ....and so much more. We hope our listeners will draw from Anthony's rich experience in learning to navigate a mixed faith marriage, communicating across faith and belief, reconstructing a sense of spirituality after a faith crisis, and creating support communities for people inside and outside the edge of Mormonism.

FUNDAMENTALIST MORMON Part 2 on Fundamentally Mormon                                     presented at                             The Sunstone Symposium                                  August 1989 by Ogden Kraut   Page 8 According to Church history, the Lord didn’t seem to be too concerned about the laws of the land against plural marriage either. The first revelation concerning this principle was revealed to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery in 1829 while they were translating the Book of Mormon in a state that already had a law against plural wives. The next revelation on this principle came in 1831 in another state with a law against it. In fact, all five states in which the Prophet Joseph Smith lived had laws that severe opposed to that spiritual “law” that an angel with a drawn sword commanded him to live. In 1852, the revelation on plural marriage, recorded in 1843 and later appearing as Section 132 in the Doctrine and Covenants, was read and favorably voted upon by the Saints. Ten years later, the United States passed the Morrill law against it, but the Mormons continued to practice the law of God in preference to the law of man. Another revelation in 1880 continued to sustain that principle in spite of the law of Congress. Then in 1882, the Edmunds law was passed to further harass the Mormons. But three months later the Lord gave another revelation to counter it.

The Early History   The Prophet Joseph Smith was the first Fundamentalist Mormon in this dispensation, simply because he was the first to teach, advocate and practice the fundamental principles of the Gospel. However, those who advocate these original doctrines today are called Fundamentalists and are considered as outsiders from the main body of the LDS Church.

On this episode, we continue our conversation with Cody Noconi from the Psilly Rabbits podcast about the Smith-entheogen theory. We cover the second half of the paper to be presented at Sunstone Symposium which deconstructs entheogen use through Joseph Smith’s early years and into Mormonism. The amount Smith had practiced honing dose, set, and setting finally pays off during the Kirtland Temple dedication ceremony. Public entheogen use seems to drop off sharply after this ceremony, being forced underground for many understandable reasons. We conclude with discussing possible weak points in the theory, as well as limitations, and finish with our overarching conclusion for the entire paper. We hope to see some of you at Sunstone on Saturday 29 July 2017 for the presentation, or for the live My Book of Mormon show at Squatter’s pub that same evening! If you can’t make it to either of those, consider coming to church with Marie and I at the Joseph Smith Memorial building on Sunday to stand in solidarity supporting those hurt by the bigotry forwarded by the Mormon church. In today’s Internet world with ever-increasing numbers of Mormon-themed websites, blogs, and podcasts, it is sometimes easy to forget that many of the most frequent topics under discussion in today’s forums have been debated and discussed in uncorrelated publications and gatherings for more than four decades, and that we who enjoy (or crave) these conversations today have an amazing treasure trove of wonderfully written, meticulously researched, and pioneering articles and essays that are definitely worth discovering, as well as thousands of thoughtful, dynamic, and many times funny or quirky discussions available in audio for free (or close-to-free) downloading. Please join Mormon Matters host Dan Wotherspoon, along with Joanna Brooks, Dialogue editor Kristine Haglund, and Sunstone editor Stephen Carter, for a fun and informative tour of the history and contributions of these stalwart organizations and their offerings, along with some very thoughtful (not kidding here: listen!) comments about the ways the blogging/podcasting and print worlds each have important and separate functions and roles to play, but also how they can (and already do) benefit greatly from each other. In the first half hour, Joanna Brooks also pushes Kristine Haglund to share some of her own experiences growing up in a faithful but very "thinky" home in which Dialogue was always around and difficult questions in Mormonism were regularly discussed, with no topics off limits.
