Jane Kanizay is an adventurer, educator, activist, speaker, artist and mother of four who on 14 May 2022 successfully climbed Mt. Everest with her 19-year-old daughter. Jane enjoys sharing the highs and lows of her Everest experience and the journey of resilience required to take on such an immense challenge as a survivor. Jane climbed with the message of @teachusconsent to campaign for holistic consent education in school education curriculum and to advocate for the prevention of violence against women. To have a message to take to the summit provided additional strength on the days Jane had reached her physical or emotional limits. High altitude mountaineering is one of the deadliest sports in the world. Jane successfully summited mountains above 6000m plus an 8000m summit of Cho Oyu, Tibet, to prepare her for the extreme environment of Everest, considered to be in the ‘death zone' above 8000m where oxygen content is only 34% compared with sea level. Listening to Jane on the Tough Girl Podcast offers a rare insight into the mental and physical fortitude it takes to summit Everest, but also the deeper purpose behind her journey.  Through her incredible story, Jane not only inspires adventurers but also advocates for change, sharing how carrying a message of consent and empowerment gave her the strength to push through her limits.  Her story will resonate with anyone looking to overcome challenges, build resilience, and find purpose in their own lives.   Don't miss out on the latest episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast, released every Tuesday at 7am UK time! Jane Kanizay went from financial freedom to divorce to financial freedom again while achieving amazing physical feats along the way. Jane is an adventurer, educator, activist, speaker, artist, and mother of four who successfully climbed Mt. Everest with her 19-year-old daughter on May 14th, 2022. Jane climbs with the message of Teach Us Consent to campaign for holistic consent education in the school curriculum and to advocate for the prevention of violence against women. This mission helps push her to her physical and mental limits. High-altitude mountaineering is one of the deadliest sports in the world. It's also very expensive and hard to imagine being possible for most teachers. That's where Jane's background in real estate shines. She built a portfolio that is now funding her amazing adventures. She also gives us an in-depth breakdown of the financial abuse she tries to educate on and advocate against. Some signs of this abuse from a partner might include: Controls access to finances, won't let you access bank accounts or credit cards Expects you to pay for bills, groceries, and other basic necessities but gives you little or no money to cover those costs Forbids you from working or deliberately sabotages your ability to get or hold down a job Refuses to work or contribute to family expenses Takes out loans or accrues debt in your name Doesn't include you in significant investment or banking decisions Refuses to pay or evades child support Hides assets Incurs fines or infringements in your name then expects you to pay them Jane's story is so inspirational and we hope that she helps you get out of your comfort zone and achieve the seemingly impossible. This is not compulsory listening, but then again, it kind of is. We're back to have another imperfect conversation about men, violence and consent, because we're still imperfect and we believe reflecting on behaviour is key to changing it.  We don't have all the answers, but in collaboration with Teach Us Consent and future OAM Chanel Contos, we've come up with some new Vulnerabilitea House questions to help anyone get vulnerable and think deeply about these issues.  In all honesty, we're pretty nervous about answering them, but reflecting and getting vulnerable with ourselves and others is how we do better and become the people we want to be. You can find the questions on our instagram: https://bit.ly/4dnfjvO Vulnerability is the willingness to be seen as our authentic selves, even when we don't know how others will respond. To be vulnerable is to take an emotional risk and while it does promote connection, it can also cause distress and should never be forced. So take care of yourself and others while answering these questions. Always vulnerable responsibly.  To watch this full episode on YouTube, follow this link - https://bit.ly/4fx8lWP

She knew something needed to change.Over the last year she has advocated for schools to teach consent from a younger age, and make sure all students are better educated in this area. Just a day before launching this podcast the Australian Federal Government announced 8.51 Million dollars of funding to her project, Teach Us Consent. And now every school in Australia will be required to teach consent to students aged 11-16 thanks to Chanel's advocacy and tireless work! The impact Chanel has had and will continue to have is nothing short of amazing, she inspires me so much and I learnt a lot in this chat. I couldn't think of a better human to have on for IWD.Share this episode around as the messages inside need to be heard by all! Trigger warning: Consent and sexual abuse  EPISODE 6  This week I got deep talking with my two friends Ella and Belle. With the help of Flex Mami's REFLEX card games, we discussed some important topics in our lives and BOY did we have a good chat. However, this week's ep comes with a trigger warning as we delved into a discussion about consent and touched on sexual abuse and non-consensual relationships. We spoke about the poor sex education programs in our Victorian schools as well as touched on how to recognise positive and negative friendships, especially during a pandemic.  Please note, the answers to these questions are all uniquely our own thoughts and opinions and are not intended to disrespect anyone in any way. This is a really important conversation to us all and we hope we have answered these questions with sensitivity and respect.  If you want to send in your comments or feedback or even let us know your answers to the questions asked, We would love to hear from you! Chanel is taking social media by storm with her recent “teach us consent petition” that is advocating for holistic sexuality education earlier in the school curriculum. Rape prevention campaigners have slammed the Morrison government's “confusing” new consent education campaign for schools featuring bizarre videos of a woman smearing a man's face with a milkshake.Warning the videos fail to meet the National Standards for the prevention of sexual assault through education, advocates say expert revision of all of the current content is needed to ensure it actually works, and isn't harmful. The consent videos include “examples” of a woman being concerned about swimming in a beach because of sharks and a man with a spear gun trying to convince her to get in the water, and in another using an example of a man eating a tacos to explain sexual assault.Fair Agenda and End Rape on Campus Australia's Karen Willis told news.com.au the government's newly released school resources are concerning and confusing.“Young people are more sophisticated than this content gives them credit for. And sex and consent is far more complicated than videos about milkshakes and sharks at the beach,” Ms Willis, a prevention educator with 30 years experience, said.“These resources fall well short of the national standards, and what experts know is needed to actually change behaviours and prevent abuse.”End Rape on Campus founder, Sharna Bremner, said another major concern was the videos might re-traumatise rape survivors in the classroom.“We know that in classrooms of senior students, there will be many who have already experienced rape,” she said.“This resource fails to properly consider there may be a survivor in the classroom, and even includes inaccurate and inadequate information on avenues for support and reporting.” .The resources were launched by Education Minister Alan Tudge last month and followed Brittany Higgins's allegation of a rape at Parliament House and the national outcry that followed.Former Sydney school student Chanel Contos, 22, has also launched a petition called Teach Us Consent, calling for earlier and improved sex education.Fair Agenda and End Rape on Campus Australia are calling for the government to engage violence prevention experts to replace the site's modules on consent and to review all content to ensure it meets the National Standards — including challenging the gender stereotypes that help enable gender-based violence.Ms Bremner said: “Young people want and deserve training that practically and explicitly helps them understand how to ethically navigate relationships, and to recognise — and feel armed to challenge — unacceptable or coercive behaviour. As well as how to navigate non-verbal cues. It's clear these resources weren't written by people with expertise in violence prevention.”Advocates say there are multiple issues with the Good Society site's content, including:A bizarre ‘Yes No I Don't Know' video about going into water with sharksOften, instead of directly addressing the kind of behaviours a student is actually likely to be trying to navigate, the site provides confusing videos, including about milkshakes and tacos.Includes concerning messages like ‘sexual desire can really distort our thinking'Provides incorrect and inadequate information about abuse.“We need to actively challenge the notion that sex is about men pursuing women and persisting until they relent. We need to set an expectation that everyone should be seeking affirmative, enthusiastic and informed consent, and arming young people to understand consent is not just a once-off yes/no conversation. It needs to be present the whole time,” Ms Bremner said.Renee Carr, executive director of Fair Agenda, said despite the Morrison Government's claim the program has been developed in conjunction with Our Watch and the Foundation for Young Australians, this was not the case.Ms Carr said Our Watch did not help develop these resources.Along with other organisations Our Watch was engaged to consult on a confidential basis and she said was unable to share the advice they provided to the department on...
