On this episode of Metro Talks, we feature Dr. Igor Elman, DO, of MDVIP, and Tara Murphy OTR/L, CAPS, of Metro Physical & Aquatic Therapy. Dr. Igor Elman grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and completed his undergraduate studies at Brandeis University with a Bachelor of Sciences in 2007. He then worked in the pharmaceutical consulting industry as a research associate until 2008. Dr. Elman graduated from the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine with a D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy) degree in 2012. He went on to complete his Internal Medicine residency at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in 2015 with dual board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine. He practiced as a hospitalist (internist in the hospital) at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York from 2015 until 2019 where he remains affiliated and currently still works per diem. In November 2019, he took over a personalized medicine (concierge medicine) practice in Pomona, Rockland County, New York.https://www.mdvip.com/doctors/IgorElmanDO https://www.facebook.com/igorelmando/  Metro has recently expanded our homecare team of physical, occupational, and speech therapists throughout Rockland and Westchester county.  We primarily specialize in geriatric care, and many of our therapists hold certifications in advanced training like the LSVT BIG certification for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological conditions. Also, we’re actively building our team to include therapists that specialize in working with the pediatric population. At Metro, we are on a mission to break up the perception of home care to be only for individuals who are home-bound.  Much like personalized care, home care is about as personalized as you can get - seeing someone directly in their own home environment and being able to see what they do from day to day. If we can collaborate with clinicians to identify when an individual is just starting to show any signs of decline such as increased weakness, worsening balance, etc., then we can work within a preventative care model to maintain well-being and active participation in daily activities. In this episode, we feature one of our very own Occupational Therapists, Tara Murphy, OTR/L, CAPS. Tara attended Scranton University in Pennsylvania for her B.S and M.S in Occupational Therapy. She has eight years of experience in a variety of settings including subacute care, outpatient, and home care. She specializes in geriatric care and completed advanced training including Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS), and LSVT BIG certification (specialized program for individuals with neurological conditions). Show Citations: https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/11/this-is-the-real-reason-most-americans-file-for-bankruptcy.html https://www.mdvip.com/physicians/primary-care-model-outcomes

Andrew Tisser DO is a board-certified emergency physician and a physician career strategist. He is the Medical Director of Rochester Regional Health Urgent Care-Batavia and also works at the United Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Tisser earned his osteopathic medicine degree from the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. He then completed a residency in Emergency Medicine from Upstate Medical University. Dr. Tisser hosts his own podcast show called Talk2MeDoc - which focuses on issues relating to the early career physician. While medical training is a very linear path, building a medical career can be more challenging. How can residents find their right career path? Today, Dr. Andrew Tisser shares his three-step process. First, figure out who you are and what your values are. Think back to who you were before medical school. The things you liked don't go away when you bury them in medical training. Next, figure out what you'd like to be doing for eight to 12 hours a day. Sometimes it's easier to start with what you don't like doing. Then, third is the strategy: career experiments, talk to people in the industry, see what's out there, what is possible, and work towards those goals.  Pearls of Wisdom: 1. Learning which path to choose is a three-step process: First, who are you as a person (before medical school)? Second, what do you love doing? Third, strategize and plan a path based on who you are and what you love. 2. Talk to people like a person. Acknowledge people, say hello, sit with patients, make an effort to learn people's names. 3. Great mentors don't sugarcoat things. They help you see what you can't and help you figure out solutions. Find someone you trust enough to be vulnerable with. 4. At any point in your career, you have options. It's never too late to go after what you love doing.

Why should medical school students invest their time in basic science research? That’s our theme for this episode of Behind the Bench from AJP-Heart and Circ. Hosts Lisandra de Castro Brás (East Carolina University) and Jonathan Kirk (Loyola University Chicago) interview Dhandevi Persand and Nicole Maddie, both students at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dhandevi and Nicole won the FASEB Dream Award to attend the APS Professional Skills Training Course on Writing and Reviewing for Scientific Journals, and they have co-authored a New Investigator Editorial detailing their experiences. More importantly, Dhandevi and Nicole are using their platform as Women in Stem to promote the importance of research for clinical trainees. As students in the NYIT Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) program, Nicole and Dhandevi focus on how structure affects function. The translational research projects they have both worked on have cemented their feelings that research is critically important for medical students and clinicians. Did you know that D.O. students must complete 200 additional hours of coursework, compared to M.D. students, in order to learn osteopathic manipulative medicine? Listen for a refreshingly open conversation about time management and reaching for “stretch goals” which turn out to be surprisingly attainable.   Dhandevi Persand and Nicole Maddie New investigator editorial: the osteopathic medical student perspective on research Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol, published December 2, 2020. Her awards include the Psi Sigma Alpha from the National Osteopathic Scholastic Honor Society and Sigma Sigma Phi from the National Osteopathic Service Fraternity, in addition to awards for recognition of her skills as an educator. If there is one thing we should take away from this conversation with Dr. Alysia Kwiatkowski, it is that we have a voice, and we need to use it. Today, we realize how we as learners are the ultimate stakeholders in medical education therefore our voice is just as important if not more. Dr. Kwiatkowski's mission in medicine is to improve education and leadership for her students and generations to come. And today, we'll learn from her story that the most powerful thing we can do is to get the best training we can, give back to our community, and make a positive impact. Pearls of Wisdom: 1. Get the best training you can, and give back to your community. There is value in thinking beyond ourselves. 2. Have a voice, and use it (even when we feel intimidated). We as the learners are a valued member of decision-making as the ultimate stakeholders in medical education. 3. The mentor's role is to help us set and achieve goals. As mentees, our role is to be open and honest with them. 4. There is no failure, just feedback.

Born in Germany to Jamaican born and British raised parents, Natalie ‘The Floacist’ Stewart is a natural. The trained actress and slam champion poet, she made her stage debut at age three.  As a graduate of Richard Branson’s BRIT Performing Arts and Technology College where she earned the title of ‘Student of The Year.'  The Floacist later went on to invite her long time friend Marsha Ambrosius to perform at a poetry event that Natalie was headlining along side her renowned performance poetry group ‘3 Plus 1.'  That night, Floetry was born.  As the creative mastermind of Floetry, The Floacist acted as manager and PR agent.  She then managed to take her blossoming artistic venture from South London to Philadelphia and ultimately, to the World.  So, ??after five years of non-stop, sold out, touring and selling well over 1 million copies of three released albums and a live album DVD, Floetry moved on to solo ventures. ? The Floacist's third album 'RISE of the Phoenix Mermaid was released on March 18th 2014. RISE of the Phoenix Mermaid has been inspired, as always, by my personal walk and journey through the pages of the day to day parable that is my life! RISE is a compilation of a few songs that I wrote in 2006/7, at the point of the end of Floetry, that I didn't have the opportunity to share but have now reworked and finally am delighted to present to my audience, as well as a few completely new songs that I manifested in 2013, and I have also converted some of my favorite spoken word pieces into the Floetic ethos of song structure.
