***Want one piece of business strategy delivered daily to your inbox?*** Subscribe here: https://www.geraldinecarter.com/subscribe-main-list Long time listeners to this podcast know I am on the hunt for a better business model for CPAs, than the traditional time-for-money-for-reports model. In many cases, that model doesn't work well for the client, and for CPAs who are working long hours, that model doesn't work great for them either.  CPAs may want to do things differently, but lack role models and examples they can point to to convince them they have other available options.  Here today to talk with me about his journey switching from the traditional model to a more limited size practice in medicine is Dr. Lewis Weiner.  Dr. Weiner is an internal medicine physician in his own private practice in Providence, RI. He offers the MDVIP program - a different approach to primary care with a focus on prevention and a better healthcare experience. Highlights: — “The breaking point comes when you feel like you're forsaking the patients you're caring for.” — “The fear of the status quo, the risk and the knowns of doing nothing were scarier than the potential for change.” — “What was scary about transitioning away was that people may not, or will not understand this thing. Why is this physician that we all know and has been a part of this community for so long, breaking away from the mainstream?” — “What helped to get past the angst was that there was so much belief in this being a valid, appropriate and positive option that's being offered to people.” Connect with Dr. Weiner: MDVIP Website: https://www.mdvip.com/

It's Acadiana: Out to Lunch

There's nothing new under the sun, the saying goes. And that's absolutely true in business. Revolutionary ideas are often old concepts made new again. It's why the 1990s are making a comeback.  A smart entrepreneur might look back in time and realize that we fixed something that wasn't broken. How about the family doctor. Time was, you had a personal relationship with your local physician: they knew more about you than the prescriptions on your chart.  Today, a trip to the doctor's office can make you feel like meat on a conveyor belt.  But a new approach is catching on. And, yes, it's an old idea. Dr. Dee Dee Luke is a physician affiliated with MDVIP - a membership based medical service that gives doctors space to treat the whole patient.  Dr. Luke's patients work on wellness plans that set out goals that emphasize good health. Dee Dee has practiced family medicine in Lafayette for over twenty years, but switched the MDVIP model in 2016. It slimmed down her patient list from 3,000 to 600. And from Dr. Luke's perspective it has given her the chance to practice medicine the way it should.  Wellness for people is one thing. How about wellness for the planet? Recycling is another way to make something new of something old. Taylor Lyons Vaughn has a novel way of doing that: worms.  Taylor's vermicompost facility, The Worm Lady Recycles puts hundreds of thousands of worms to work turning your old banana peels, coffee grinds, toilet paper rolls and other compostables into fertilizer.  In the worm business they call that castings.  European Red Wrigglers make really good soil and — apparently — a very good cup of tea! Taylor's worms recycle anywhere from 200 to 300 pounds of waste each week. Taylor collects all that refuse from five drop off locations around Lafayette and from some partner businesses: Spa Mizan, PJ's Coffee in Broussard and Hub City Diner.  Taylor is passionate about vermiculture and opens the facility to tours for kids. She'll even sell you your own starter kit of European Red Wrigglers. Out to Lunch Acadiana is recorded live over lunch at Tula Tacos and Amigos in downtown Lafayette. You can find photos from this show by Astor Morgan at itsacadiana.com and while you're there you can check also out other pioneering healthcare options in Acadiana.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, host Mark Gomez, MD, and his guests, Louis Malinow, MD, and Bonnie Kastin, RDN, LDN, break down common diets and offer practical tips on how to establish sustainable, healthy eating habits. In Greek, the word “diet” means “way of life.” For so many people, day-to-day life revolves around food. With all the choices available and a fast food restaurant on every corner, it's more important than ever to focus on healthier eating. Almost all diseases can be prevented or delayed with better nutrition. Eating a standard American diet (ahem, processed food, a.k.a. anything in a box or a bag) can seriously affect your health! Since almost everyone relies on processed food on a regular basis, this could be troubling. Feeling overwhelmed? Don't worry. Small changes in your diet can make a big difference in your health. There are three things we can control: what we eat, how much we eat and when we eat. As diet culture evolves, various diets rise and fall in popularity. Fasting, keto, counting macros – which dietary trends are the healthiest to follow? And is it possible to change your eating habits if others in your household don't? Guests Louis Malinow, MD - ASH certified hypertension specialist; Diplomate, American Board of Clinical Lipidology; Director of Education and Clinical Excellence at MDVIP. Bonnie Kastin, RDN, LDN - Registered dietitian nutritionist and licensed dietitian nutritionist, Suburban Gastroenterology, LTD.

He then worked in the pharmaceutical consulting industry as a research associate until 2008. Dr. Elman graduated from the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine with a D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy) degree in 2012. He went on to complete his Internal Medicine residency at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in 2015 with dual board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine. He practiced as a hospitalist (internist in the hospital) at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York from 2015 until 2019 where he remains affiliated and currently still works per diem. In November 2019, he took over a personalized medicine (concierge medicine) practice in Pomona, Rockland County, New York.https://www.mdvip.com/doctors/IgorElmanDO https://www.facebook.com/igorelmando/  Metro has recently expanded our homecare team of physical, occupational, and speech therapists throughout Rockland and Westchester county.  We primarily specialize in geriatric care, and many of our therapists hold certifications in advanced training like the LSVT BIG certification for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological conditions. Also, we’re actively building our team to include therapists that specialize in working with the pediatric population. At Metro, we are on a mission to break up the perception of home care to be only for individuals who are home-bound.  Much like personalized care, home care is about as personalized as you can get - seeing someone directly in their own home environment and being able to see what they do from day to day. If we can collaborate with clinicians to identify when an individual is just starting to show any signs of decline such as increased weakness, worsening balance, etc., then we can work within a preventative care model to maintain well-being and active participation in daily activities. In this episode, we feature one of our very own Occupational Therapists, Tara Murphy, OTR/L, CAPS. Tara attended Scranton University in Pennsylvania for her B.S and M.S in Occupational Therapy. She has eight years of experience in a variety of settings including subacute care, outpatient, and home care. She specializes in geriatric care and completed advanced training including Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS), and LSVT BIG certification (specialized program for individuals with neurological conditions). Show Citations: https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/11/this-is-the-real-reason-most-americans-file-for-bankruptcy.html https://www.mdvip.com/physicians/primary-care-model-outcomes

PGX for Pharmacists host Ken Sternfeld, RPh., talks with one of the original physicians he began working with on Pharmacogenomics testing for patient's better health.  About Dr. Michael Goodman Dr. Goodman notes: "As a board-certified internist and your personal physician, helping you achieve your optimal health is my priority.   I will establish a close partnership with you and help guide you toward the most innovative steps in modern healthcare. Beyond the personalized wellness program and customized action plan offered in my MDVIP-affiliated primary care practice, my patients enjoy many conveniences not found in most medical offices today. I am available 24/7 on my cell phone, you will be seen promptly for all visits, as your time is valuable, and I will help coordinate your care with specialists.   As a private internal medicine doctor, I am knowledgeable in all aspects of adult medicine – cardiology, endocrinology, pulmonary medicine - to name a few. And I've been recognized a “Top Doctor” by Castle Connolly.   I have been board certified in internal medicine since 1980 and have practiced in the Merrick and Bellmore areas of New York for 30 years. My office is in Bellemore, south of Southern State Parkway, Sunrise Highway, Merrick Road and near major highways. I have established relationships with many specialists in the community and at the leading hospitals in Nassau County, Suffolk County and New York City and am affiliated with South Nassau Communities Hospital.   Being healthy is a choice.
