Send us a Text Message.Thomas Midgley Jr. (May 18, 1889 – November 2, 1944) was an American mechanical and chemical engineer. He played a major role in developing leaded gasoline (tetraethyl lead) and some of the first chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), better known in the United States by the brand name Freon; both products were later banned from common use due to their harmful impact on human health and the environment. He was granted more than 100 patents over the course of his career.Midgley contracted polio in 1940 and was left disabled; in 1944, he was found strangled to death by a device he devised to allow him to get out of bed unassisted. It was reported to the public that he had been accidentally killed by his own invention, but his death was declared by the coroner to be a suicide.Read More about Thomas Midgley Jr.Interesting Video: The Man Who Accidentally Killed The Most People In HistorySPONSOR THIS PODCAST Podcasting takes time and money. Wielu z Was zapewne wspomniałoby o straszliwych dyktatorach XX wieku – Hitlerze, Stalinie i Mao. – to ktoś, o kim niewielu z Was kiedykolwiek słyszało. To mężczyzna z USA. Inżynier i wynalazca. Osoba, która pomogła przekształcić amerykański i światowy przemysł samochodowy. Osoba, której praca pozwoliła nam utrzymać chłód w naszych domach latem i mieć lodówki do przechowywania żywności. Thomas Midgley Jr. invented two things that were used all over the world. Firstly, he invented leaded gasoline. This helped car engines operate more efficiently, but at the cost of spewing poisonous gas everywhere. The second invention is Chlorofluorocarbons or "CFCs." These substances, which were sold under the brand name Freon, had widespread applications in refrigerators and aerosols. But it eventually discovered that these CFCs were eating away at the ozone layer in Earth's atmosphere. Ozone depletion allows more UV radiation to reach the Earth's surface, which can lead to skin cancer, cataracts, and weakened immune systems. The fact that a single individual invented both of these things which were slowly killing humanity before they were phased out, led Environmental historian J. R. McNeill to say that Midgley "had more adverse impact on the atmosphere than any other single organism in Earth's history." Before Thomas Midgley died in 1944, he didn't see himself as destructive. Because the scientific community showered him with praise and prizes and accolades during his lifetime. And he didn't even have a reason to think he was doing anything bad because the government regulators who were tasked with protecting the American public gave his inventions a pass. This story represents a complete failure of tech entrepreneurs to consider the adverse impacts that their inventions might have, a failure of the scientific community to check one of their own, and a failure of supposed protectors of the public interest to do their jobs. And all of these failures basically meant that the generation after Midgley was forced to clean up his mess. Thomas Midgley Jr., a brilliant scientist working for Dayton, Ohio research companies in the 1920, invented two world-changing products. He discovered a lead additive could stop the destructing knocking noise prevalent in early auto engines. And he discovered a supergas that allowed average homes to safely have refrigerators and air conditioners. It wasn't until decades after Midgley's death that his revolutionary creations were destroying the planet, and the life upon it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Thomas Midgley Jr came close to destroying the world with his invention of CFCs, but we managed to survive. This time he's back to finish the job. Because why have one planet-ending invention when you can have two? Here's the story about how the same guy also invented leaded gasoline and somehow managed to be even deadlier the second time around.
In which we finally learn why 'fridge' has a 'D' in it but 'refrigerator' doesn't. Oh, and quite a bit about the end of the world too, with history's biggest killer - Thomas Midgley Jr.

Thomas Midgley Jr, invented great things, innovations that almost destroyed the planet. He didn't mean to, but promise brings peril..

This week we're looking at inventions gone horribly wrong. Olivia tells the story of the “one-man climate disaster,” aka the wildly successful 20th-century inventor Thomas Midgley Jr., whose creations caused widespread lead-induced madness and the near destruction of the ozone layer. Thanks to a bit of showmanship and barely any regulations, his inventions ended up in everyday vehicles and homes for decades after his untimely death. Then, Elise digs into “forever chemicals” in period underwear, the little-known class-action lawsuit against Thinx underwear, and how to advocate for safer products. Other topics include ethical inventing, the lead-crime hypothesis, and what we're listening to. Donate to abortion funds! Z njo so zaslužili približno 300 tisoč dolarjev letno. In this episode, host Gabe Filippelli explains the science of lead's health effects and tells us the story of Thomas Midgley Jr. and Clair Patterson, who respectively put lead into and got lead out of gasoline.
Leaded gasoline seemed like a great idea at the time, but it turns out that aerosolizing a neurotoxin is bad for human health and society as a whole. After a brief project car update we tell the story of tetraethyllead (at 27 min), get Zach's ideas for running a car company (at 1 hour), and hear Bryant's field report from the recent 24 Hours of Lemons race in Colorado (at 1:21).Sources:https://www.thedrive.com/news/42203/leaded-gasoline-finally-banned-worldwide-after-last-country-uses-up-its-supply https://www.brookings.edu/blog/up-front/2017/06/01/new-evidence-that-lead-exposure-increases-crime/ https://www.motherjones.com/environment/2016/02/lead-exposure-gasoline-crime-increase-children-health/ The Dollop podcast about Thomas Midgley Jr. https://allthingscomedy.com/podcasts/393---thomas-midgley Email us with tips, stories, and unhinged rants:carsandcomrades@gmail.com RSS feed: https://media.rss.com/carsandcomrades/feed.xmlFollow us on social media:https://www.instagram.com/cars_and_comrades_podcast/https://twitter.com/CarsAndComradeshttps://www.facebook.com/Cars-Comrades-Podcast-101908671824034https://www.reddit.com/user/CarsAndComradeshttps://www.hexbear.net/u/CarsAndComradesAll music from the free album Polygondwanaland by King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard:https://kinggizzardandthelizardwizard.com/polygondwanaland

When you think of the world's most dangerous person, who do you think of? Genghis Khan? Stalin? Hitler?! Try a gas-huffing, pseudo-chemist that gave an entire generation lead poisoning and singlehandedly melted a hole in the atmosphere. Midgley created a ecological Frankenstein's monster, but did his smooth-brained science cause his undoing?
We're back in the same room for better or worse. Listen to us catch up, apologize, and then give a brief overview of the world's most dangerous (debatably) General Motors employee.

Where did lead come from and how did it become widespread in our cities? A deeper look into the history of industrial contamination. I discuss General Motors, Thomas Midgley Jr, and the politics of corporate backed science.
Thomas Midgley Jr. was undoubtedly a great inventor, yet he was far from a great man. Midgley was recognised by J. R. McNeill, a pioneer of the study of environmental history, as having “had more impact on the atmosphere than any other single organism in Earth's history“. Midgley's inventions have contributed significantly to the 400,000 deaths from lead in the USA each year - with more around the world. On top of this his invention of Chlorofluorocarbons have wrecked our atmosphere In this I examine: Midgley's background, how he came to invent leaded gasoline, how the scientific and regulatory community reacted, and what Midgley did next.
