CURRENT SERMON SERIES: "TIMSHOL" One of the most important words in the world is the Hebrew word “Timshol.” Steinbeck wrote about it in East of Eden. Mumford and Sons sang about it in “Timshel.” In the Bible, it appears in the story of Cain and Abel when, just before Cain murders his brother out of jealous anger, God tells him that while sin is lurking at the door, “You may master it.” Timshol means something like “You may master,” and it reminds us that we have the freedom to choose to fight through—and prevail over—our worst human impulses like anger, hatred, greed, and the need to be in control. Timshol reminds us that, by God's strength, we have the power to choose to be better humans by acting with more compassion, grace, mercy, and self-restraint. In this season of Lent, we'll explore what it means to master the impulses that make us less human by surrendering to the grace of God that, over time, perfects us in divine love.

Today, I'm joined by Gami. Gami is a crypto creator and the founder of GnarsDAO, the skateboarding-centric nounish community. Gami is one of a small number of practitioners in an emerging discipline that I call "crypto production." Gami led the creation of several onchain happenings, including GnarsDAO, a DAO dedicated to onboarding skaters to Web3, Forgeries, a nounish open edition and onchain Noun raffle, as well as an arts patronage dao, an onchain tontine, and much more. In this episode, Gami and I discuss his creative practice, and how he manages to be so prolific. We discuss his positive sum philosophy, his belief that crypto is a counter cultural movement, and his collaborative working relationships with Iain Nash, Volkey, and 0xlght. It was great getting a chance to chat with Gami, who is doing fascinating work summoning onchain happenings with social media and the blockchain. Welcome to BookShook! This podcast is all about the second half of April's book, East of Eden by John Steinbeck (from chapter 25 if you're reading alongside) .  The idea of the podcast  is that we’ll read the first half of a book together and then I'll share my thoughts (and yours hopefully! - email bookshook@yahoo.com) in part 1 of the podcast published on the second Friday of the month (April 9th). And then in part 2 (published on the last Friday of the month - 30th April), I'll discuss the second half of the book (in this case from ch.25 to the end). We’ll see together how the novel concludes and decide whether it’s a book we’d recommend to a friend - or not. Of course, you don’t have to read the book, you can listen to it, or just follow along without doing either since I’ll be summarising what happens (but be aware! - there will be spoilers). You can leave a comment or start a conversation at the BookShook YouTube channel or send an email to bookshook @yahoo.com. The book we’ll be reading for May 2021  is Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami (so get that ready if you’re going to read alongside me). The first podcast will be on 14th May. Thanks for listening to BookShook! RogerContent Warning: There are adult themes throughout the novel (arson, sexual and physical violence, animal cruelty). I have removed any swear words from dialogue. Please check the content of the novel before listening to the podcast. This episode will be available for three months. One of the few women to translate the Bible, Bonnie Lewis discusses her journey that led to this wonderful masterpiece. The journey was wrought with outside criticism revolving around a female's audaciousness to do such a thing as translate the Bible.  Bonnie's  “inner Fundamentalist" wasn't so quick to let her off the hook in pursuing this endeavor;  but over time, her Maker made paths straight and vision cleared to proceed.  Part of Pastor With No Answers extended family, Bonnie, shares her journey that led to her writing the enlightening idiomatic translation of the Bible.  It's called Timshel, a collection of the most commonly heard stories in the Old and New Testament.  So, what do we make out of the chauvinistic nature of the Bible?  When everyone is getting a different meaning out of the Bible, how do we know what to trust?  And what finite being gets to be an authority of  God's work?  We discuss this and more.We also discuss a survival story from the big Texas snow that occurred this past winter.   Joey comes  clean with how Bonnie (and her husband, Cy) were recipients of some “anxiety texts” of his, around the time he was in crisis with his mental health.  Bonnie Lewis and Timshel:https://www.instagram.com/bonniegaillewis/https://www.timsheltranslation.com/Special Music Feature from “Terraform: The People” by Propaganda & DJ Mal Ski"We All In” (beginning of episode)"We Are All We Got” (end of episode) *download new album wherever you listen to musicJoey/PWNA Instagram:  www.instagram.com/joeysvendsenCurrent DonorSee: https://donorsee.com/pwnahelpsGet notifications each time we start raising money to get more information on our current opportunity to “save the day” for team humanity. The Tower of Babel has always felt like a distant story about a vengeful God. Jeremy and I dive into this story and reveal what knowledge we gained in translating it. The Tower of Babel is a story about empire and the quest for power, about poor theology and the dangerous cycle of confirmation bias. But, most importantly, it's about the absolute necessity for diversity. Diversity in representation, voice, relationships, and power. We discuss her recent work, called "Timshel," the first-ever idiomatic Bible translation. Timshel, translated from the Hebrew word meaning “we have a choice,” brings out the inner journey of the characters in twenty well-known Biblical stories through rigorous exegetical work, word studies, and historical and cultural research. With the use of modern psychology, and the emphasis on the context in which the text was written, these stories come alive in a whole new way. One of the most divisive questions in the modern church is whether or not biological sex plays a role in who should be allowed to preach (and there are other issues wrapped up in this one, like whether women should be primary bread-winners, etc). Egalitarians say, “No, let the women preach!” Complementarians say, “Yes, men only; that is how God set things up.” In this episode, we hear from Dan’s Godmother Barb Clark, who is an elder in an Egalitarian church, but has some nagging concerns about the whole thing. Then the bulk of the episode is spent with Rev. Born José Miguel Sánchez Gómez, YOSS assumed his pen name in 1988, when he won the Premio David in the science fiction category for Timshel. Together with his peculiar pseudonym, the author’s aesthetic of an impenitent rocker has allowed him to stand out amongst his fellow Cuban writers. Earning a degree in Biology in 1991, he went on to graduate from the first ever course on Narrative Techniques at the Onelio Jorge Cardoso Center of Literary Training, in the year 1999. Today, Yoss writes both realistic and science fiction works. Alongside these novels, the author produces essays, reviews, and compilations, and actively promotes the Cuban science fiction literary workshops, Espiral and Espacio Abierto. In this episode, Jon interviews YOSS about his newest book, Super Extra Grande. The post Cuban science fiction – Ep 6 with YOSS appeared first on Read Learn Live Podcast.

“Mr. Steinbeck has written the precise equivalent of those nineteenth century melodramas in which the villains could always be recognized because they waxed their mustaches …” —Anthony West in a _New Yorker _review of East of Eden entitled “California Moonshine.”From it's publication in 1952, John Steinbeck's _East of Eden _has always been more of a popular than a critical favorite. As another great twentieth century author (Raymond Chandler) wrote, “The average critic never recognizes an achievement when it happens. He explains it after it has become respectable.”There are parts of _East of Eden _(the characters of Lee and Cathy, some of Steinbeck's prose styling) that may never be respectable. It's one of those books that's too much of a potboiler for certain members of the (ahem) Critical Intelligentsia, and too much like Literature for certain blockheads who only read potboilers. Not that any of this matters to the heroes of The Bookening. They love it all_ _unabashedly. Read it and you will too.In the final part of their series on John Steinbeck's _East of Eden, _our heroes wax elegant on Adam Trask and his sons, crush on Abra, love on Lee, and try to understand the mystery that is Cathy. Do they succeed in saying everything they have to say about this awesome book? They mayest.Timshel, Bro.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
