On this week's episode, Melissa transports us to the South of France for a conversation with international hotelier Paddy McKillen about art, wine, architecture, and his passion project in Provence, Château La Coste. Villa La Coste, a 28 suite boutique hotel, sits on the grounds of the extraordinary 600-acre estate, Château La Coste, where you will also find an open-air contemporary art museum and winery.  In this episode, you'll learn how Paddy went from working at his parent's motor repair company in West Belfast to transforming a 300-year-old winery in the South of France into a wine estate and contemporary art park with a boutique 5-star hotel and incredible restaurants on site, including one from the Argentine celebrity chef and king of outdoor cooking, Francis Mallmann.  Between the outdoor art complex and culinary offerings, plus the state-of-the-art spa, immaculate pool area, and ultra-chic accommodations, there is good reason Melissa is excited to highlight the hotel and the massive art park at Chateau La Coste. It features works by some of the most notable names in contemporary art and architecture, with sculptures and buildings from Frank Gehry, Tadao Andao, Louise Bourgeois, Andy Goldsworthy, Tracy Emin, Sean Scully, and Ai Wei Wei, to name a few. The South of France is home to an expansive world of art. When a collage of digital images was sold in New York earlier this year for £50 million, the art world was convulsed. The reason? The picture couldn't be hung on a wall and was only visible online. What had been bought and sold was the non-fungible token - or NFT - relating to the collage. David Aaronovitch and his guests discover how NFTs work for those who sell and those who buy them and also consider if NFTs are a passing fad or an aspect of our culture that is becoming increasingly common and might lead to the emergence of a future John Constable or Tracy Emin, eventually spreading to and influencing other art forms.Enter the Briefing Room and find out why collectors are investing in NFTs; how easy it is to spot a fake and what you can do about it; and whether non-fungibles will be an enduring part of the artistic - and investment - worlds in the years ahead. Those taking part include: Georgina Adam of The Art Newspaper; investor in NFTs and co-founder and chief executive of the Arts and culture portal Vastari, Bernardine Bröcker Wieder; and the art historian, former art dealer and presenter of the BBC FOUR series, Britain's Lost Masterpieces, Bendor Grosvenor.Producers Simon Coates and Bob Howard Editor Jasper CorbettImage: Visitors to "Machine Hallucinations - Space: Metaverse" by Refik Anadol, which will be auctioned online as an NFT at Sothebys, at the Digital Art Fair, Hong Kong Credit: REUTERS/Tyrone Siu

Before we discuss bad music (only in my opinion) I would like to give a mention to a performance from the past by Yoko Ono which I was unfortunately subjected to on a recent TV programme....it was a stadium concert with Yoko approaching the Mike backed by Eric Clapton on guitar...Keith Richards on Bass....and of course John Lennon on guitar.....plus a big band behind them....next to the mike was some bloke scraping away on a fiddle...then Yoko begins....she didn't actually sing she just squawked in various octaves .... no words...no tune....it sounded like either a seagull or a tom cat with its testicles trapped in the door.....added to which was the fiddle playing at high speed into the same mike....it was unbearable and if I had have been Clapton I would have walked off....what was going on?!!....to call it atrocious would be a compliment.......but I suppose it gives certain folk the opportunity to "understand" the message....the same folk who see so much art excellence in Tracy Emin's unmade bed.....it's hard to believe what some people can get away with.....IT IS RUBBISH!! As for my worst song feature this week I would like to put forward The Smiths.....no song in particular just anything by The Smiths.....Morrisey has to be the worst singer and "composer" ever...with the exception of Yoko of course......the band are good it's just Morrisey....it's as if the band go in the studio and rattle out a decent backing track....then along comes Morrisey and sings the first thing that comes into his head over it......so Vince the choice this week is yours....anything by The Smiths will be fine with me because it is all diabolical.

I did something rather wonderful this morning. It involved Grand Masters and there was not a golf ball in sight. Golf is a whole other story: I once went for a golf lesson. I have no idea how blind people make a go of this inscrutable game. I found it impossible to line the iron up with the ball and spent a frustrating hour beating the hell out of thin air and terrifying my coach. After the lesson ended and he mopped his brow, he told me not to come back. These Grand Masters would not have been seen dead, let alone alive, in the coveted Masters Green Jacket. It's a truism of just about all paintings in Charles 1 collection that green doesn't make much of an appearance. It was an unstable color. You couldn't just drop a blob of blue into a blob of yellow and hope for the best. Reds predominate. I gave up going to art galleries a long time ago. It's not that it's impossible to appreciate the beauty and sentiment of great art. Good magnification can make it worthwhile, but it's the crowds that do it. If you are trying to check out the art work with a pair of binoculars clamped to you face it makes it tricky to move to the best vantage point when the dear old public stand bang smack between you and the picture. Every time you move you have to refocus the binoculars and then bang, someone loses their patience because you are in their way. A neatly positioned nudge to the elbow delivers a nifty blow to the eye socket and game over. I've had more injuries in art galleries than on golf courses. What a treat it was then, to have “Charles 1 King and Collector”, at the Royal Academy, to myself, with only the hardiest of art lovers for company, at eight o'clock in the morning. There were no crowds, just a group of very polite people quietly waiting their turn. No risk of a black eye. My host for this uplifting start to the day, had invited me to a private view that I had never seen, and as we wandered from room to room, she shared her extensive knowledge of King Charles 1 and his appetite for buying up the the art of less fortunate royal bankrupts when they were forced to sell up. She read the catalogue notes out loud and gave me a wonderful description of the brush work of Van Dyck and Titian. It beats the last time I had the joy of such an enthusiastic guide: I went to the Tracy Emin at the Hayward. The notes were not accounts of the representation of noble ambition, but of earthier pursuits like sex and drugs and alcohol, all read out loud. I can get this at home. I can even manage to avoid making my bed, or possibly getting out of it, without too much trouble at home. Charles 1 collection, on the other hand, was well worth getting out of bed for. What would have capped it all off, was to be allowed to touch the few sculptures that were there. I did this at a Jacob Epstein exhibition years ago and it was wonderful. What the dark dense material of a sculpture couldn't convey to my eye, fingers did. I might not have seen what the casual, or not so casual, viewer saw, but the picture in my head was fulsome and the effort worth it. We all filter our understanding of what we see through the lens of experience and where we're standing at the time. Just because I happen to have a less visual experience of such delights does not mean it's not worth it. It is.

As the UK lockdown continues, we discuss the unfolding situation and the continual emotional shifts we are all experiencing. Here in Britain we are seeing some of our most well-known artists responding in different ways. Tracy Emin wrote an online diary; David Hockney is making new paintings; and Grayson Perry is filming a new TV show designed to encourage people to make art. We ask whether these are helpful reactions. In troubled times, what is the point of it all? Is art relevant? And is this an opportunity for us to switch from a focus on producing work for shows to a new emphasis on creativity and exploration? We also discuss the importance of mental health for our physical well-being, debate potential societal changes, and ask whether we are currently in the midst of a global existential crisis. Interviews by Brainard Carey

Dan Hill, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized expert on the role of emotions in politics, business, sports and culture. He pioneered the use of facial coding in business to capture emotional dynamics and has done work for over 50% of the world’s top 100 B2C companies. He’s also been a political pundit for CNN, The New York Times, Reuters, Fox, and MSNBC, among other media outlets, since the 2004 presidential race. His eight books include Emotionomics, chosen by Advertising Age as a top 10 must-read book of 2009 and featuring a foreword by Sam Simon, co-creator of The Simpsons; and among his three most recent books, First Blush: People’s Intuitive Reactions to Famous Art. Dan holds a Ph.D. in English from Rutgers University, following a M.A. in Creative Writing from Brown University and has thrice been noted with commendation in The Best American Essays series. The conservative scientific estimation is that 95% of people’s mental activity isn’t fully conscious. First Blush is by far the largest study ever done involving eye tracking and art – plus facial coding, to capture how participants felt about what they were precisely seeing (and experiencing). This handout picture received from Christies auction house on May 27, 2014 shows an artwork entitled "My Bed" by British artist Tracey Emin. Tracey Emin's unmade bed artfully littered with condoms, cigarette packs and underwear is expected to fetch around £1 million (1.2 million euros, $1.7 million) at auction. The work, called simply "My Bed", cemented Emin's notoriety when it was shortlisted for the 1999 Turner Prize, although the British artist eventually lost out to future Oscar winner Steve McQueen, who directed "12 Years a Slave".  AFP PHOTO / CHRISTIES Caption for Tracy Emin eye-tracking results for My Bed – Tracy Emin’s installation piece, My Bed, was the top-performing art work in First Blush. That result is based on both driving a high volume of fixations (where the eye stays with a detail long enough for it to mentally register) and a high volume of emotional engagement (when facial muscle activity reflects interest).

Sad to hear about the passing of Aretha Franklin....she was world class and such a massive talent...her range and phrasing were as good as it gets....but she will live on through the music she has given us all....I have always admired anyone who can get up on stage and entertain unrehearsed...which she can do and back herself on the piano...brilliant....there are some amazing female voices who I admire....Dionne Warwick singing Heartbreaker is a masterpiece and couldn't be sung any better....also Celine Dion's voice is so pure it makes me quite emotional......also we have some great home grown female voices such as Leona Lewis....all she needs is the right song.....not forgetting other great singers e.g. Gladys Knight and Tina Turner. 2.Talking of masterpieces (or not) the Tate Gallery in Liverpool has had a makeover.....now when I look at some of the modern art on display I'm afraid I just don't get it....for example a black square on a green background entitled "black on green" is NOT art and anyone over the age of 2 could produce this.....but no doubt some "experts" will see so much in this nonsense.....we have discussed this before but I think Tracy Emin deserves a mention with her "unmade bed"....she should have got in it and stayed there.....what do these people think when they look at a Constable....or a DaVinci?....they probably think they are in the same league. 3.Because it has become impossible to find anything on television I have found a series on Netflix called "Designated Survivor" starring and produced by Kiefer Sutherland who should have been a ventriloquist.....I had to instantly reach for the subtitle button.....you can't understand a word he says....not to mention his acting which is pretty bad....and why do modern films all have to be in the dark with everyone mumbling?....the problem is there are so many films to choose from and finding a decent one is a lottery...and usually it's not until you get halfway through that you realise it's rubbish but you have gone so far you may as well see it out and waste another couple of hours out of your life. 4.The hot weather here has created some interesting new fashions....especially in the shorts area....what I fail to see is the point of blokes wearing big baggy shorts which leave about 12 inches of bandy leg vanishing into huge trainers....this coupled with the shaved head with sunglasses perched on the top....the earring...and of course tattoos.....this is all very well if you are 18 ... but when you are 60+ it just doesn't work.....to me it looks hideous....and not forgetting the walk... letting onlookers know that they are still as fit and hard as they ever were....which sadly they are not.....only my opinion that's all. 5.The song this week has a story behind it....when I first met you when you were working for Radio Merseyside I had written a song about the area which you played on your programme....I eventually released the song on vinyl with a girl singer performing it...I placed them in the tourist shops in Liverpool and it was picked up by a chap called Ron Jones who was the boss of Merseyside Council Tourism....he got in touch and asked me if I would write a song about Liverpool and The Beatles....I didn't want to capitalise on the fab four as everyone else was doing so....so I composed "Beatle City" utilising the titles of their songs....I supplied the council with a large amount and they sold the lot...and here it is....my tribute to Scouseland.
