Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer discuss the high-stakes negotiations Canada faces as the deadline for potential 50 percent tariffs from the U.S looms. They examine whether the sides remain far apart or if public positioning is strategic theatre, and the political calculations facing both Prime Minister Carney and President Trump. They also explore worst-case scenarios, including Canadian retaliatory tariffs and whether Canada should make major concessions or leverage Trump's political vulnerabilities heading into midterm elections amid broader geopolitical pressures. The Hub is Canada's fastest growing independent digital news outlet.Subscribe to The Hub's podcast feed to get our best content when you are on the go:https://tinyurl.com/3a7zpd7e (Apple) https://tinyurl.com/y8akmfn7 (Spotify)Follow The Hub on X: https://x.com/thehubcanada?lang=enCREDITS:Alisha Rao - Producer and Editor Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer - HostsChristopher Katsarov/The Canadian Press - Photo Credit Hosted on Acast. Follow along as Kevin Clancy (aka KFC Barstool) and Clem (aka The Clem Report) battle through another season with The New York Mets. We can't think that way. Uncle Stevie is the bright light in the middle of the dark. We're going to be an amazing (or at the very least respectable) team this team. We Gotta Believe. August 19 is fast approaching, and despite efforts to reach a deal, there is a real possibility that negotiations could collapse altogether. Do Canadian concessions actually reduce threats from Trump, or simply invite more demands? And if Trump agrees to a deal, will he renege later and demand more? Andrew argues that “ragging the puck”—stretching negotiations out as long as possible—may be Canada's best strategy. The discussion also turns to Canada's dairy subsidy and protection system: does protecting domestic dairy producers actually serve Canadian farmers, when it leaves Canadian consumers paying up to twice as much for dairy products? In the second half of the show, Rudyard and Andrew turn to the continuing standoff over the Strait of Hormuz. How long can the crisis last? The United States appears trapped in a conflict it cannot easily walk away from. Iran is now the side issuing demands, while making a mockery of Trump's threats and exposing the limits of American power. The damage isn't just military—it has undermined the credibility of U.S. threats and security guarantees to its allies, which may prove even more consequential.Become a Munk Donor ($50 annually) to get 72-hour advanced access to the full length editions of Friday Focus and Munk Dialogues. SEASON 5 EPISODE 1: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: Hey look, we're back. A special edition to test new equipment (both internal and mechanical), and to talk about the amazing reality that Trump has lost his war in Iran, and the only result he got has just been made permanent as Iran made a deal not with him, but with Oman, to institutionalize the Strait of Hormuz tolls. He is literally the first U.S. President to lose a war. So much winning! Plus the latest media fails (New York Times platforms that idiot David Ellison, who has been silenced by the liberal media that is owned by conservatives; more Maggie Haberman), new Michigan senatorial candidate Abdul El-Sayed comes out throwing figurative punches at MAGA, and the bigger picture on the through lines back of Trump's Iran Forever War: burying Epstein, monetizing war for the Trump Mafia, and trying to make you afraid that gas will cost an extra buck rather than afraid your descendants will be smothered by gas's destruction of the atmosphere. B-Block (50:00) SPORTSBALLCENTER TONIGHT: Did you notice baseball's celebration of its "Trade Deadline" this week? This is a relatively new phenomenon. Through most of its history baseball has tried to legislate AGAINST powerful well-heeled teams from monopolizing all the talent. In fact there was once a rule against making a trade with a defending champion! And, maybe you heard I'm selling one of my rare Honus Wagner baseball cards. The idea that the card was damaged (the background to the player's portrait was cut away, probably in 1909) and I had it restored by a master conservator, has kind of gotten warped in the hype about the auction. The point is: restoration - illicit, secret, designed to mislead and deceive - has been around for three decades and I had this already-altered card re-altered was and is an attempt to make restoration above board. C-Block (1:23:14) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Well my old pal Laura Ingraham was back in the news and I'm afraid Dr. Fauci was subjected to a real-time version of one of my recurring nightmares: I'm somewhere public, trying to deal with a crisis, and I can tell somebody is sitting behind me gesticulating and contorting their visage - and it's LAURA. Or you can title this "The many faces of Laura Ingraham."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Brian Cashman's failure to add a reliever at the trade deadline leaves the Yankees taking a dangerous gamble with a bullpen full of uncertainty. Evan Roberts calls the decision unacceptable for a championship contender, while Tiki Barber argues that Cashman had to trust his process rather than overpay or make a reckless gut call. The concerns only grow after Clarke Schmidt experiences forearm cramping during a short rehab outing, potentially disrupting the Yankees' plan to move surplus starters into relief roles. Evan, Tiki and Shaun Morash debate whether Cashman protected too many prospects, how much faith the team can place in its current arms and whether holding onto Ben Rice and Cam Schlittler proves patience was the right approach.
