The recent UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) raised the stakes for global climate action, recognising the urgency of acting today to decarbonise global energy systems. Even so, there have been competing claims about its success, and thousands of youth activists, who gathered in the streets of Glasgow, criticised world leaders and businesses for still failing to recognise the urgency of the climate crisis – the most critical matter of our time. In the fight against climate change, everyone has a part to play. How is NATO, as a security organisation, contributing to international climate efforts and what more can the Alliance do?

The 26th annual UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) fell short of our expectations and left ESG-focused investors with more considerations than ever before. It also did little to add clarity to the path ahead. With COP26 behind us, host Michael Collins, CFA is joined by PGIM Fixed Income's ESG specialists, Armelle de Vienne and John Ploeg, CFA for an insightful discussion of the summit, how it came to be, its purpose, and its major takeaways. Our ESG specialists also provide their take on how the asset management industry and ESG-focused client expectations will evolve in response to the pervasive demand for ESG-considerations to be incorporated in investment decisions. The discussion details how climate and social governance considerations are factored into PGIM Fixed Income's proprietary impact ratings, what we're doing to help ESG-focused clients meet their investment goals, including in the CLO-space, and how our active investment approach helps PGIM Fixed Income maintain a competitive advantage in the ESG-space.   Looking for more content from PGIM Fixed Income's ESG specialists? Ross Simson, Global Chief Data Officer at CDP, shares how he's advancing the non-profit's data strategy and tackling the unique challenges facing charity sector data leaders With climate change in the spotlight following the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), Ross Simson, Global Chief Data Officer at environment-focused non-profit CDP, joins us this week on the Business of Data podcast. In this episode, he talks about developing a successful data strategy at CDP, building a data team with the right skills and the need for a global standard for data management accreditation. Futureproofing CDP's Data Strategy CDP helps organizations and governments measure and disclose their environmental impact. To develop CDP's data strategy, Simson had to take a holistic approach that considered a range of factors, including people, resource allocation and the business environment. “Being a charity, and as we get more organizations disclosing to us, we can't just add more staff,” Simson explains. “We have to invest in technology where we can automate certain tasks and still use data science and machine learning.” One of the methods Simson uses when planning CDP's data strategy is McKinsey's Three Horizons Model. The model aims to help businesses manage innovation and growth goals by grouping initiatives according to when they will come to maturity. He says: “We're facing this dilemma where you've got horizon thinking, but everybody wants everything done now. For example, ‘data-driven' seems to be the newest buzzword. But to be a truly data-driven organization, you need to understand the value of data. We have all these tools and technologies, but we aren't well organized where data's concerned.” “One of our challenges now [at CDP] is that we're updating our data model,” he continues. “But there are 15 global standards that we can adhere to and each of those can have up to 25 data points. So the question becomes, how do you create a model which underpins not only what you need now, but for the future?” “You want to develop a data strategy that's as futureproof as possible,” he adds. “The past year has shown us that you can't ever be truly futureproof. We must become more nimble [and] change the way we think because, when it comes to technology, one size doesn't fit all.” Investing in Data Team Talent Simson would like to see a common global standard for accreditation in the various data fields, as well as a focus on nurturing young talent. While there are many organizations working on creating global data standards, he says the industry needs to focus more on accreditation. He chairs the Customer Data Council in the UK, an advisory arm of the Data and Marketing Association. The association provides recognized accreditation and training in areas such as data management. The challenge going forward, he says, is in setting a global accreditation standard for the va

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), which is the United Nations specialized agency charged with promoting sustainable tourism, today unveiled the “Glasgow Declaration for Climate Action in Tourism” at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) here. The Declaration commits companies to cutting their emissions in half by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, with all residual emissions being absorbed through ecological restoration by 2050 at the latest. More than 300 stakeholders have signed the declaration, including the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), which represents more than  300 companies responsible for more than 70 percent of global tourism. “The commitment is to not only reduce the footprint by changing business as usual operations, but also offsetting…through blue carbon, for example,” said UNWTO Executive Director Zoritsa Urosevic in an interview with Ecosystem Marketplace. “This is going to become, maybe, the new tourism attraction, because it's going to have a value that is more than just the beach.” She said that the UNWTO is in the process of launching a net- zero tourism fund, with contributions from tourists being matched by tour operators. UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili conceded the gains that individual companies have made but stressed the need for a sector-wide effort involving government and international organizations as well.  “The Glasgow Declaration is a tool to help bridge the gap between good intentions and meaningful climate action,” he said. Urosevic described an ambitious strategy for using tourism to promote regeneration, especially of coral reefs, but stressed the need to hold the sector accountable. That's the ambition, but we're not there yet and we need your help,” she said. “We need everyone's help,” she added.

Communities enduring conflict are on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Paradoxically, they are also among the most neglected by climate action. It is increasingly urgent to act. The climate crisis is deeply unsettling, as it forces people to reinvent their ways of life. This reality needs to drive the conversation and lead to more and faster action. In this post – ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) and part of our special series on climate change, conflict and humanitarian action – ICRC Policy Advisor Catherine-Lune Grayson calls on us all to step up our collective efforts to support conflict-affected populations in adapting to growing climate risks.

Pandemic Unmasked is a short series of podcasts by the British Embassy The Hague reflecting on the Covid-19 pandemic that started almost a year ago. This episode host Andy Clark speaks with Rachel Kyte CMG, Dean of The Fletcher School at Tufts University in Massachusetts. She is also an advisor to the UK government in its preparations of the climate talks in 2021 as a Friend of the UN Climate Change Conference COP26. Our Dutch guest is Sander de Bruyn, Environmental Economics Coordinator at CE Delft, an independent research and consultancy organisation specialised in developing innovative solutions to environmental problems. They discuss the need for a green recovery of the economic crisis caused by the pandemic. What needs to be done to make the recovery from this pandemic as sustainable, efficient and inclusive as possible? A great example of a green business model comes from the Dutch company Packaly, a delivery company specialised in CO2 neutral shipping. Their CEO Axel Dekker explains their vision. It is an example of adaptation during the lockdown that can prove beneficial for the post-pandemic world.  Rachel Kyte CMG  served as special representative of the UN Secretary-General and CEO of Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), prior to joining The Fletcher School at Tufts University.  She previously was the World Bank Group Vice President and Special Envoy for climate change in the run-up to The Paris Agreement. She was also Vice President at the International Finance Corporation and served as co-chair of UN Energy. Kyte is a member of the UN Secretary-General’s high level advisory group on climate action and an advisor to the UK government in its preparations of the climate talks in 2021 as a Friend of COP26. Sander de Bruyn is Environmental Economics Coordinator at CE Delft, specialising in resource and materials policy, cost-effectiveness computation and economic growth and scenario analysis. He graduated as an economist with a major in welfare theory, and gained a PhD in applied environmental economics. By making proper calculations of the costs and expenditures associated with environmental policy, for government as well as industry, means can be sought to reduce those costs and increase the environmental pay-off. In his work De Bruyn often found that by adopting a slightly different policy perspective major savings can be achieved, to the benefit of both government and industry. Axel Dekker is CEO of Packaly, a Dutch delivery company specialised in CO2 neutral shipping. They ship parcels from stores directly to customer by bike couriers.
