In this episode of Safety Shorts, host Emily Hargrove, NSSGA's Director of Occupational Safety and Health, welcomes Shea Davis, Regional Operations Manager for CDE USA, to discuss the evolution of safety training in the aggregates industry, particularly over NSSGA's 25-year history. Together, they explore the shift from passive, compliance-focused methods to today's interactive, real-world learning essential for engaging younger generations like Millennials and Gen Z. Shea also shares a personal injury story highlighting the critical need for proactive hazard identification and risk assessment tools like "Take 5" or "SLAM." In essence, today's episode emphasizes that modern, effective training goes beyond mere compliance to foster a strong safety culture, prevent accidents, and ensure vital safety knowledge is retained and applied in the field. Main Themes: Evolution of Training Generational Learning Styles The Impact of Inadequate Training Proactive Safety Checks Beyond Compliance Engagement and Retention Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) Future-Proofing the Industry Toolbox Talk Discussion Questions:   Shea talks about the differences between his first training experience in the industry and the training new employees receive today. How have you noticed these trainings change? Shea had a lost time incident that could have been avoided if he had known to stop and assess the situation better. Why do you think it's important to take the time to work safely? Does anyone have a story they would like to share about training they wish they had received earlier in their career? Key Takeaways: "When I was preparing the guard I was told that we had to rush to get the plant up and running... Time was against me." "The grinder ended up catching a side piece of angle iron... which would not have been an issue if I had not repositioned the guard." "This resulted in a trip to the emergency room. I received several stitches, also a few days work. So now I had a lost time accident." "If I had known or been trained to do these small little exercises, this may not have happened at all." "But I don't know what I don't know if I'm not trained on it. So that's how I've seen training evolve over the years." "We, as safety professionals, we have a major responsibility to deliver quality safety content in ways that inexperienced people can retain that information." "Being able to provide the content is important to the younger generation of workers... because they're the ones that are going to drive our industry in the future." "Safety training matters beyond compliance. It's about saving lives and building better workplaces." Links: National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association website Shea Davis

It's claimed the closure of a North Clare post office would sound the death knell for the community. An Post has advertised a vacancy in the Lisdoonvarna Post Office on two occasions to no avail and is currently advertising it for the third time. February 28th is the closing date for applications and information can be found on the An Post website. Local woman Marie Lynch says given the challenges faced by residents to keep the town up and running in recent years, closing the post office is unthinkable. Fine Gael Councillor Joe Garrihy has invited An Post's Regional Operations Manager to meet with the Lisdoonvarna Town Team next week in order to share more information about the vacant position. Councillor Garrihy says all the investment going into North Clare will be for nothing if its vital services are allowed to fall by the wayside.

Strategic Staff Planning in an Uncertain Economy with Cris Chilelli

As we begin wrapping up the year, it's time for strategic staff planning. The people who love numbers are probably very excited, but in an uncertain economy, this year's planning could look a lot different. Cris Chilelli joins the conversation today to help us wrap our heads around the challenges we're facing. Cris is the Regional Operations Manager for VCA in Arizona and with 25 years of experience in the field, she knows a thing or two about strategic planning. In this episode, Cris dives into overstaffing, turnover rate, office culture, and the “doom and gloom” of an economic recession. Regardless of the current numbers and metrics, it's important to know where you stand right now and be able to make a plan for what's coming. It does sound daunting, but this conversation with Cris ends on a high note with her words of wisdom and motivation.   Show Notes: [2:50] - Strategic planning is not a “cookie cutter” process. [4:06] - Retention is a challenge right now as well, with a shortage of professionals. [5:05] - The metrics used a year ago will not work this year. [6:30] - Overstaffing is a good idea when possible during uncertain times. [8:23] - Another concern is when current employees are unhappy or not pulling their weight. [9:35] - The team is looking to management to hold everyone accountable and treat everyone fairly. [11:29] - The turnover rate in this industry is twice that in other industries. [13:05] - Culture is crucial and it takes some time to build that. [14:16] - The younger generation of employees are usually very clear on the things they want and they have great ideas. [15:48] - It is important to monitor staff turnover. [17:47] - How can we train employees to give them the opportunity to grow and the desire to stay? [19:10] - Cris shares her thoughts about overtime. [20:18] - Managers need to be okay with monitoring and stepping in to have conversations with someone who isn't pulling their weight. [22:06] - Some managers may feel very beaten down right now. [23:09] - A recession is looming and we need to be as prepared as possible. [25:10] - Someone has to do the hard things. It's important to find staff who are willing to do these tasks and to train them appropriately. [26:33] - Start where you are now. Know and be clear on what things are like right this moment and then make a plan. [27:57] - It's easy to get sucked into the “doom and gloom” of the economic recession. [29:07] - The numbers we have used for years may not work moving forward, but 2023 doesn't need to be scary.   Thank you for listening. Remember you are not in this alone. Andrea Spiegel is an operations and management consultant based in Vancouver, BC, with 15 years of experience in leadership management spanning multiple industries, including entertainment, wellness, service, trades, and manufacturing. She enjoys working with visionary founders, helping them define long-term goals, identify gaps in current systems, and map out tangible strategies for sustainable growth. One of Andrea's greatest passions is bringing order to chaos and witnessing the freedom her clients feel as their business becomes aligned with their vision. When she is not strategizing with clients, you might find Andrea engaging with her community in one of her favorite not-for-profit organizations or skiing Whistler with her family. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn:Some of the favorite job titles Andrea Spiegel has been calledWhat Andrea learned from the LA film industryWhy she left entertainment to work in yogaAndrea's thoughts on maternity leave and women's careersThe beauty and challenge of working in a smaller companyWhy she was drawn to yoga after LAWhat she means by doing “good” business versus “nice” businessWhere leaders need to place their prioritiesWhat specific thing she learned from Kevin Lang that Andrea valuesThe value of process when coupled with innovative thinking and what people need to be successfulIn this episode…Andrea Spiegel took what she calls a “not straight pathway” to her current career at URGEO. Born in Calgary, AB, she first moved to LA to work at a literary agency in the film industry. From there she moved up to Vancouver, BC, to work in yoga. She started teaching at YYoga and went on to become the Regional Operations Manager. After her maternity leave, she went to the lighting design company McCormick Studio which is where she was introduced to Martin as a mentor. And that led her to URGEO.The through line in all Andrea's career moves is a love of creative industries and her ability to create very elegant systems that allow people to be creative. She also realized that many things that appear definitive are actually negotiable, that companies are composed of people whose decisions can be questioned by the curious and confident. What Andrea also saw was the inversion of performance management: instead of caring about the performance of the people being managed, the care was about the performance of a manager. She took these things to heart. In this episode of What CEOs Talk About, host Martin Hunter and guest Andrea Spiegel discuss leadership and managing people, the value of redirection over criticism, and how the best process is developed with the people using it in mind. Andrea is clear that the value of elegant systems is not simply efficiency and revenue, but that people can work in them. She wants CEOs and entrepreneurs to be able to get back to doing the thing they started the business to do, instead of spending all their time doing the business.Resources mentioned in this episode:URGEOContact email: info@urgeo.comMartin Hunter on LinkedInAndrea Spiegel on LinkedInYYogaMatthew McCormick‘Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know' by Adam Grant‘The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable' by Patrick Lencioni‘Getting Naked: A Business Fable' by Patrick LencioniResources recommended for CEOs and leaders:Monday.comBambooHRSponsor for this podcast...This podcast is brought to you by URGEO, Operational excellence in action through the Are you Ready Program! Are you READY to free up your time?Optimize your Organization?Grow revenue and reduce costs?Build your leadership team?Partnering with organizations like yours, we work with you to implement our proven methodology designed to transform your operations, while providing accurate advice and support for real success.Translating strategy into frontline operations, URGEO helps leaders and the people within their organization excel at safe, on-time, on-budget and on-spec delivery. Coming out of the pandemic, many hospitality industry leaders are looking for ways to cut costs in order to bounce back from a tumultuous couple of years. It may be tempting to pull back on staffing and training but Yancy believes these areas are exactly where organizations need to invest the most. To Yancy, a good team is like a long-term investment. It may seem expensive in the short term to have a selective hiring program and extensive training for new team members, but the returns on that investment years down the road can transform a business. An organization with a thorough onboarding program and a willingness to invest in its team can build a culture of hard work and dedication to the company that pays off in outstanding ways. From the head chef to the dishwasher, every employee has a key role to play; companies that teach their staff the value of their position create a culture of pride that translates into a fantastic guest experience. Today's guest is coming to us all the way from Japan-- Marcie West, the Regional Operations Manager of the USO Pacific.  NB: due to the distance and connectivity, there are some gaps/zoom noises you will hear...apologies! For those who don't know, The USO is the United Services Organization, a nonprofit whose mission is to strengthen “America's military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation.” How did we cross paths?  I've been blessed to be a part of the entertainment division of the USO since 2018, and since we couldn't do in-person events, the USO quickly adapted to virtual programming worldwide. As my other half of life is that of a fitness professional, I have had the opportunity to teach multiple classes over recent months to Japan, Guam, and more. Marcie's passion for the USO was apparent from our first Zoom meeting! The USO Pacific covers 52% of the world's surface area and supports the troops and their families within all those miles. Referring to what she wanted to be when she grew up, Marcie said “it all comes down to wanting to make a difference. I just wanted to make a difference.”  As a military spouse herself, she knows first-hand the challenge to find community as well as a job with all the relocations and ever-changing towns, countries, and cultures. The USO does such a variety of programming-- check it out here: uso.org If you are interested in volunteering, they are in the process of creating a virtual volunteers program.  So no matter where you are located, you can be a part of supporting the troops!  Find more here: volunteers.uso.org If you would like to reach out to Marcie, she can be contacted at mawest@uso.org We need all the good news we can get. This brings me to Some (More) Good News, featuring mini interviews with people following their passions, even if that means leaving behind a potentially more comfortable career path, and making people feel better along the way.   (Shout-out to #JohnKrasinski for inspiring this whole thing in the first place!) Desmond Young manages Riverside Recovery Resources' community involvement and business development, as well as overseeing all programs. He attended the University of Texas at Austin for Biology and Psychology. Desmond began his business career in the Entertainment Industry, serving as the Human Resources Director and Regional Operations Manager for AMC Theatres, Inc. Since 2005, Desmond has been personally active and successful in the recovery community. He has worked with RRR since 2015 and enjoys being of service to the staff and the surrounding communities. When he is not working, Desmond enjoys his family, food, mentoring young men, hiking, tennis, and spiritual exploration. Anne Unmacht considers Riverside County her home. She has lived in the area over 35 years, raising her children in Southwest Riverside County, over those decades she has had a front row seat to the economic booms and down turns that the County has faced.   Anne has a servant's heart and a strong desire to help those in need.  Several years ago, Anne gave up her career as a successful real estate agent when she discovered there was limited to no resources in Southwest Riverside County for the homeless.  With a vision, Anne founded God's Fan Club (Unity in Christ to help the homeless and hurting), DBA Project T.O.U.C.H., a non-profit organization uniting the faith-based community in partnership with business and civic organizations to conquer homelessness.  She realized the issue of homelessness was too broad to be tackled by any one entity. Anne's focus and commitment are securing housing, services, and resources to meet the needs of the ever-growing homeless population in Southwest Riverside County through Project T.O.U.C.H (Together Our Unity Conquers Homelessness) PT.  Anne has a passion and a goal to see services available to the homeless population where they are located instead of having them transported out of the area. Today she oversees P.T. which has grown to currently provide 215 year-round transitional beds with emergency beds included in that number, as well as 40-50 beds in the annual Winter Shelter.  Anne has worked with innumerable agencies county-wide which deal directly or indirectly with homeless issues.  She has also served law enforcement in Southwest Riverside County (Temecula & Murrieta PD) for well over a decade, answering calls around the clock to take in emergency clients referred by the police.  She also currently serves as an active member of the County APS Care Team dealing with homelessness and has been nominated “Citizen of the Year 2012” through the Temecula Chamber of Commerce.  PT has also been twice nominated as Charitable Organization of the Year as well as awarded most innovated charity in the county in 2012.  Her goal and purpose are to serve those in need and to prayerfully help to contribute to overcome this enormous homeless crisis facing Riverside County.
