Reisen bildet, sagt man. * Eva Schmassmann, Präsidentin von fairunterwegs.org * Farrah Mettler, Head of Marketing Tourasia

A billion people - that's 15% of the world's population - live with some sort of disability, so ensuring equal access to travel is not just simply the right thing to do not just from an ethical standpoint but it's also just good business. From temporary and permanent disabilities to impairments to speech, vision, hearing, communication, sensory processing, and physical limitations such as people who require walking aids and wheelchair users, there is a significant and growing need for accessible travel. In this episode we speak to two fascinating guests, Jenny Mclaughlin, a Project Manager at Heathrow Airport working on the Airside / Landside Delivery team currently working on the Kilo Apron Development (KAD) project, and also Martin Heng, Internationally recognised accessibility travel expert who previously worked at Lonely Planet for 20 years, first as an Editorial Manager and then became as their first Accessible Travel Manager. We break down what accessible travel can look like for different people, Jenny discusses projects she's worked on including the Inclusive Design Overlay project and the Umbrella Project, as well as discussing Heathrow's ‘Open to All' 2019 paper - the biggest report into passengers and why they hadn't travelled.Martin shares how his travel experiences changed after an accident in 2010 making him a wheelchair user, how he created and maintains the world's largest collection of Accessible Travel Online Resources, featured in the UNWTO's Good Practices in the Accessible Tourism Supply Chain, and also discusses the business-case for making travel accessible for all, with examples of those who have done this already. We finally discuss the future of travel and what they envisage it to look like for everyone. Find out how instead of expecting people to adapt to the world, we can make efforts to adapt the world to the people who live in it.

So, we are on the final stretch for 2023 - with 10 months down, 2 to go. While this historically marks a busy part of the calendar for travel in South East Asia, it's also a time when jitters start setting in for the new year ahead. So where are we at? This week, Gary and Hannah discuss October's Top 8 travel talking points, which take us from Thailand to Indonesia, Malaysia to Vietnam and Cambodia to the Philippines. En route, we discuss the latest arrivals figures and an interesting UNWTO tourism measurement pilot programme in the Philippines. Two regional airlines collapsed in October and another is preparing to list on the Nasdaq. Meanwhile, are slumping currencies starting to impact tourism activity? Plus, Indonesia launched WHOOSH, South East Asia's first high-speed railway, and Cambodia inaugurated a new international airport. Finally, what do the “Two Countries, One Destination” and “Three Countries, One Destination” taglines refer to - and to whom do they matter more, politicians or travellers?     .

2023 will be known as the year that the tourism industry in Europe and the Middle East finally returned to pre-pandemic levels. That's the projection the UN World Tourism Organisation made last week, as global tourism operators eye the return of more travelers. But many parts of the world remain cautious due to the conflict in Ukraine, and also rising inflation, which might keep some people from travelling. But if 2022 was the year that travellers began venturing out with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, this year is set to be marked by the return of mass tour groups, and their demand for luxury items and vacations. After enforcing an almost three-year zero-Covid policy that locked in the world's largest source of tourists, China is now re-opening its doors to the outside world. The UNWTO also expects demand from US travelers for overseas trips to remain high. In 2022, a strong US dollar and a weaker Euro saw an influx of American holidaymakers to Europe. But it might still be a few years before global tourism revenues go past the 1.7 trillion dollar mark of 2019. ESG is a term we are hearing more and more in the investing world.  Environmental, Social, Governance refers to companies or investment strategies that make a positive impact on society and nature. It can have broad interpretations with many companies claiming ESG standards that are more a ruse than action. Christian de Boer is the epitome of ACTION.  His luxury 36 suite hotel is located on the doorsteps of UNESCO World Heritage Site Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Christian has instituted a PLASTIC FREE policy.  And he has taken this paradigm to the global community as an advisor to the United Nations and UNWTO.  Christian de Boer, Managing Director of Jaya House Hotels, Jaya Organics, and Co-Founder of RefillNotLandFill, and Special Advisor to the United Nations.  While working with Virgin Founder Richard Branson, Christian learned to think outside the box and how to approach business from a new perspective.  Christian has done so by creating one of the first ultra-luxury resort experiences committed to PLASTIC FREE.  His previous hotels have been ranked top ten in the world and his leadership on the environmental awareness front is unmatched.  Peacefully located alongside the Siem Reap River, surrounded by fully grown trees, is a hidden gem. A small, upmarket hotel with only 36 rooms, two swimming pools, a Spa and an all-day-dining restaurant. The hotel is located about a 6-minute tuk-tuk journey from town in the direction of the magnificent temples of Angkor Wat.  Each of its 36 rooms has either balcony or direct garden & pool access. In today's episode, the United Nations Secretary General's Envoy on Youth Jayathma Wickramanayake is my Guest. At the recently held Global Youth Tourism Summit in Sorrento, Jayathma implored the youth not to wait to be invited to the table but take the initiatives they feel strongly about it since it's the surest way to effect change. She applauded the UNWTO for organizing the landmark youth summit. Ms. Jayathma Wickramanayake was appointed as the UN Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth in June 2017 at the age of 26. She is the youngest senior official in the UN and the first woman to hold this position. In this role, Jayathma works to expand the UN's youth engagement and advocacy efforts across all four pillars of the organization's work — sustainable development, human rights, peace and security, and humanitarian action — and serves as a representative of and advisor to the Secretary-General. In 2019 Jayathma was recognized by Time Magazine as one of the “Time 100 Next: Rising stars shaping the future” and in 2020 she was recognized by Forbes magazine as part of its “30 under 30” list.   Originally from Sri Lanka, Ms. Wickramanayake has worked extensively on youth development and participation, including playing a key role in transforming the youth development sector in her home country. Prior to taking up her post, Ms. Wickramanayake was instrumental in creating the movement for civic and political engagement of young people, especially young women, in Sri Lanka through the “Hashtag Generation” movement. Previously, she advocated for global youth development on an international level including as the first ever Sri Lankan Youth Delegate to the United Nations and as the youth lead negotiator and member of the International Youth Task Force of the World Conference on Youth 2014 where she played a critical role in mainstreaming youth in the Post-2015 Process and in the establishment of World Youth Skills Day.
