Are you looking for a way to improve yourself and achieve your goals? Pursuing strength and conditioning is not just about building muscle and improving physical fitness; it can also be a powerful tool for self-growth and personal development. When you commit to a strength training program, you're working on your physical strength and building mental toughness and resilience. You'll learn to push through discomfort and overcome obstacles, which will help you to tackle challenges in all areas of your life. Zach Even-Esh is the founder of The Underground Strength Gym, a training facility in New Jersey that focuses on strength training for athletes and individuals looking to improve their fitness. Zach faced challenges such as being bullied and struggling with self-confidence. He found solace in physical fitness and began strength training at a young age, which helped him to build confidence and overcome his insecurities. Zach offers a unique perspective on strength training and its benefits. He emphasizes the importance of hard work, discipline, and perseverance in achieving fitness goals and encourages individuals to push themselves beyond their limits. Tune in as young leaders ask questions about life, personal growth, entrepreneurship, and more! Quotes: "A life spent looking for shortcuts is a long road to nowhere." – Zach Even-Esh "When you get to that level where you're doing work that matters, You're no longer going to be interested in going out to find the job; they're just going to come to you." – Matt Brad "Because if I didn't look strong and put on muscle, I become a target. And I noticed it; the bigger kids did not get picked on." – Zach Even-Esh "If they didn't have to struggle for anything, without struggle, there's no strength to be built to get you through the tough times. You have to invest." – Zach Even-Esh Takeaways: Shortcuts may seem like an easy way to succeed in life, but they can lead to long-term consequences. Success requires hard work, perseverance, and dedication. It is essential to understand that there are no shortcuts to success. One must put in the effort and time required to achieve their goals. Successful people often leave clues behind that others can follow and learn from. By studying successful people's habits, attitudes, and behaviors, we can gain insights into what it takes to succeed. When you start doing work that truly matters, you will no longer have to search for job opportunities as they will come to you. This means that success and recognition will follow when you pursue something you are passionate about and believe in. Building physical strength can be a means of protection against bullies and attackers. Taking care of your body and building physical strength can increase your confidence and self-esteem, making you less of a target for bullying and harassment. Strength training can also help you develop discipline, mental toughness, and perseverance, valuable skills that can be applied to other areas of life. Struggle and hard work are essential in developing strength and resilience to face difficult situations in life. Without effort, there is no growth. Through adversity and challenges, we learn and develop the skills necessary to overcome obstacles and achieve our goals. Conclusion: Strength transformation and conditioning can be good for self-growth and learning that you are capable of achieving any success you want. By setting and achieving fitness goals, individuals can develop discipline, focus, and perseverance, which are essential skills for success in all areas of life. Strength training can also improve confidence and self-esteem, making individuals feel more capable and empowered. By investing time and effort in strength training, individuals can learn that they are capable of achieving any success they want and apply these lessons to other areas of their lives.

As the world moves forward, the world of training has become an interesting place, accelerated by the changing club sport scene, technological advances, social media, and more.  At the same time, the actual human being performing the training hasn't changed, and human beings have far more nuances to them than simply being based on the same concepts that a machine, such as a car, does.  In many ways, human beings are being trained less and less like actual humans, and more as machines.  Cones and ladders have replaced playing basketball or soccer.  “Speed Training” has replaced running track, playing other sports, or racing friends on the playground.  This isn't to say that our collective intelligence hasn't created a substantial leap forward in understanding training frameworks, but at the same time, increased intelligence doesn't automatically equal understanding how to create the richest possible environment for an athlete. On the show today, Zach speaks on the importance of imperfect, and chaotic elements in training.  We talk about how these elements are not just important with respect to the chaos of sport, but also in the level of how we are meant to adapt to training in general as human beings.  He talks on the power of a nature-based training system, his menu-based training days, as well as what we can learn from training that “breaks the rules” or would be thought to create “sub-optimal” adaptations.  Finally, Zach hits on the important elements of community in the world of sport, and the modern plague of business that has enveloped the schedules of kids, as well as society in general. Timestamps and Main Points: 3:23 – The branding of “underground strength” versus “speed” when it comes to marketing, and what sports parents are familiar with in performance 8:07 – What a ideal world of play and movement would (and does) look like for a uyoung athlete 15:48 – The nature of preparation based on nature and chaos, versus things needing to be neat 28:19 – How kids are doing more now days, with more coaches, yet accomplish less 38:13 – Keeping training as “rich” and dense as possible, so athletes can spend less total time in training, yet hone human qualities to a maximal level 42:13 – Zach's menu-based workout system for his athletes 48:01 – The power of nature based, variable training to improve an athlete's power outputs and general adaptation 1:10:23 – The value of community in one's training environment as well as the value of training equipment with a history behind it, and the inspiration of using that “He's playing soccer… that is speed and agility” “Sport has no absolutes, so when they are training, I want their body to feel comfortable in awkward positions” “That's something software hasn't brought to the table, kids learning how to compete” “My gym is located across the street from the park, so we'll warm up with a game of ultimate football, and how do you get to the park? We partner up and you carry kettlebells or a heavy medicine ball; then we'll segue into jumping and hand walking and crawling then we do a 5-point game, and then carry everything back” “We carried to the park, played,

Meaning they stopped being fit, they stopped trying to be strong. They stopped trying to develop themselves, not just physically, but mentally…They just let it go,” says Zach Even Esh, founder of The Underground Strength Gym.   In this episode, the third and final part of our New Year Motivation series, we're taking advice on how to find success without giving up on your vision. In this episode you'll learn about… - Confirmation bias: knowing when your leaning the wrong direction on something and identify when your latching onto info that is holding you back - You have to have a vision, a vision strong enough to succeed while knowing there's no safety net. This week we catch up with Zach Even-Esh, a physical powerhouse of a human being. Zach has an amazing reputation in the world of fitness, strength, and conditioning. While Zach himself has been training non-stop since 1989, he has also trained thousands of athletes - from the youth level to the college level; from military personnel to the Olympic level, and has inspired countless athletes around the world to achieve greater success in both sports and life. In this episode you will hear: I get to help kids change their lives. You want to have the horsepower of a Ferrari, with the grinding strength of a tow truck. Strength and condition is just a vehicle for changing lives – especially of our youth. Kids sometimes need time to turn the corner. Not every kid has the attitude that can he run through a brick wall. You never know when a kid’s gonna change. He could be a train wreck for two or three years, then he turns it around and he’s your star. You never know – that’s why you can never give up on a kid. If there’s a never a challenge – or you wait too long to challenge a kid, then it’s completely foreign territory for them. The work is the gift. You should be chasing that work – not avoiding it. If you think you’re having a bad take day, take the focus of off of you. Make the person next to you better. For people to have a breakthrough, they must have a breakdown. It has to be hard – not stupid – it has to be tough. Training has to be hard. The “we”, not the “me” mentally is the game-changer. You need great team mates. To start a basic fitness effort, start by walking – we can all do it. If you make one change, you’re at 100% past zero. Don’t beat yourself up. Just get better. Accountability to somebody else changes everything. Perfection never happens. There’s beauty in the imperfection. You gotta fall in love with the process, vs the end result. With fitness & health, there’s never really an arriving point. When you achieve something, go and work at the next thing. One of the best thing you can do for yourself, is be healthy and strong. One of the most important tricks is – don’t follow the fads or gimmicks. I was taught that to be normal was to be strong. You don’t have to like it. You just have to do it. The biggest thing is to see the emotional/Internal change people experience through hard training.

First generation immigrant, the son of military parents, the grandson of holocaust escapees and a lifelong iron enthusiast, Zach Even Esh is one of the most passionate coaches I know.  I am always curious to know where undying obsession and relentless pursuit of a goal comes from.  No doubt, Zach was greatly influenced by his upbringing and lineage and it shows up in his coaching and mentality every day at Underground Strength Gym.   I'm so thankful that he was willing to share his story with me on the podcast as it is extremely unique and brings clarity to his coaching style.  Highlights:  What is the 'de-evolution of kids' that Zach has seen of youth in the last decade? Where did Zach take his first steps as a child?  Who is Andre and how did he play an important role in Zach's early training habits?  How did Zach's heritage and upbringing create his mentality? https://zacheven-esh.com/ https://undergroundstrengthclub.com/ https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/iron-roots/id1448496010?mt=2

Matt and Scott talk to powerlifter, wrestling coach, and author Zach Even-Esh about his strength and coaching journey and how he has looked back to the lifters of yore for inspiration. Zach is the founder of The Underground Strength Gym and the author of The Encyclopedia of Underground Strength and Conditioning published by Dragon Door. He also hosts the STRONG Life Podcast.   Zach is interested in a wide variety of training modalities, but draws particular inspiration from old school lifters and coaches such as Bill Starr. He discusses the importance of cultivating a focused, no-nonsense attitude in the gym, which he feels we have lost in our modern age of distractions. Lifters like Starr and the York Barbell Crew achieved as much (and even more, in some instances) as modern lifters with relatively spartan equipment and training environments. What mattered was their iron will and attitude, their consistency in showing up day after day, and their absolute focus on their goals. Zach feels that we have a lot to learn from the lifters of yesteryear, and we agree!   You can find Zach Even-Esh, his podcast, and his many excellent writings at his website: https://zacheven-esh.com   Be sure to check out his YouTube channel and Instagram @zevenesh as well to follow his lifting and coaching exploits!   Discounts Save 5% off any order at Dominion Belts with the discount code fahveoff.   Connect With Matt Matt on Instagram Starting Strength Online Coaching — Matt’s website Matt on Facebook Matt on Twitter Connect With Scott Scott on Instagram Silver Strength – Scott’s website Scott on Facebook Scott on Twitter Connect With the Show Barbell Logic on Twitter Barbell Logic on Instagram The Website Barbell Logic on Facebook barbelllogicpodcast@gmail.com

Today’s episode features strength coach, educator and entrepreneur, Zach Even Esh.  Zach is one of the most well respected figures in the strength and conditioning industry, and has impacted over 1,000 athletes in his career as a coach.  He has founded the Underground Strength Gym, as well as creating the Underground Strength Coach Certification. Zach appeared originally on episode 100 of the show alongside Jeremy Frisch and Jorge Carvajal speaking on the epidemic of early specialization, and even more problematic, the lack of play and physical proficiency amongst our youth today.  Zach is a guy who is truly in the trenches when it comes to the art of training young athletes. One of the things that has always stood out to me about Zach, and has also resonated with me in life always, is the power of using “what you have “in training.   On podcast episode #96, Dan John talked about training high achieving throwers with minimal facilities and even coaching a girl shot put with a rock.   Adarian Barr has coached me in the same manner with simple tools like a 25lb plate on a grass field. Zach has used odd and unconventional training means to achieve incredible results with his athletes and we’ll get into that on the podcast today.  We’ll also cover Zach’s mission as a coach and trends over the last two decades in terms of youth performance and decline in the physical readiness of these athletes. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Zach’s story and mission as a coach Using alternative means for training athletes The importance of partnerships and environment in enhancing creativity and work outputs Trends in youth performance in terms of kids physical readiness Quotes: “The injuries of the 1990’s were not what they are of the 2000’s” “One of the early influences to my early training setups were Rocky movies” “Odd objects got kids tough, and gave the kids a unique element where they felt special” “We just have different kids today compared to before” “I’ve seen so many athletes get injured, not from training, but from overuse of sport” “I respect how strong people got with basic equipment, limited knowledge and limited nutrition” “Spending time on smartphones will kill your creativity, you won’t be able to create because you are only consuming” “As a strength coach you have to find people who have an abundance mentality” “Today, we are talking overuse and a lack of physical readiness” About Zach Even Esh A leading figure in the strength & conditioning industry, Zach Even – Esh has trained over 1,000 athletes ranging from the youth level to the Olympic level. Zach founded The Underground Strength Gym and created The Underground Strength Coach Certification, both of which have inspired and educated coaches and athletes from around the world to achieve greater success in both sports and life. Since creating The Underground Strength Gym, Zach has consulted with Division 1 athletic teams, Olympic Level athletic clubs, Spartan Race, pro teams and independent coaches and athletes from around the world. The Underground Strength Gym began from Zach’s parents garage while he was a Health and Physical Education teacher in 2002. What started as a summer experiment training a few athletes grew into a full time obsession and now Zach and his Underground Strength methods have grown into a world wide movement, inspiring athletes and coaches all around the world in training and life. Zach’s Underground Strength Coach Certification has attendees traveling from all around the world and range from independent Strength Coaches, active Military personnel, athletic coaches, college coaches and former Navy SEALs. The film was based on the short story "The Hypnotist" by Tod Browning, who also directed the film. London After Midnight starred Lon Chaney, Marceline Day, Conrad Nagel, Henry B. Walthall, and Polly Moran. The movie is now lost and remains one of the most famous and eagerly sought after of all lost films. The last known copy was destroyed in the 1967 MGM Vault fire. His films are noted for their immaculate framing, black humor and often brutal subject matter.-- Visitor Q - The film's plot is often compared to Pier Paolo Pasolini's Teorema, in which a strange visitor to a wealthy family seduces the maid, the son, the mother, the daughter, and finally the father, before leaving a few days after, subsequently changing their lives.-- Audition - a 1999 Japanese horror film, based on the novel of the same name, directed by Takashi Miike. It is about a recent widower, Shigharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi), whose son suggests that he find a new wife. Aoyama agrees, and with a friend, stages a phoney audition to meet a potential new partner in life. After interviewing several women, Aoyama becomes interested in Asami (Eihi Shiina), who responds well to him, although as they begin to date, her dark past begins to affect their relationship.-- 13 Assassins - Cult director Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, Audition) delivers a bravado period action film set at the end of Japan's feudal era. 13 Assassins - a masterful exercise in cinematic butchery (New York Post) is centered around a group of elite samurai who are secretly enlisted to bring down a sadistic lord in order to prevent him from ascending to the throne and plunging the country into a war torn future.-- New York Asian Film Festival - In 2002, Subway Cinema launched its flagship event, the annual New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), which has been presented in collaboration with the Film Society of Lincoln Center since 2010. Born in Hong Kong in 1955, Lam initially went to an acting school. After finding he preferred making films to acting, he went to Canada to study film. In 1983, he returned and began filming comedy films. After the commercial success of his film Aces Go Places IV, he was allowed to develop his own film. Lam directed City on Fire in 1987, which led him to winning his first Hong Kong Film Award, and has been extensively referenced as the fundamental inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's first film, Reservoir Dogs.-- City on Fire - a 1987 Hong Kong crime film written, produced and directed by Ringo Lam, and starring Chow Yun-fat, Danny Lee and Sun Yueh. Following A Better Tomorrow (1986), it helped establish Chow's popularity as an action star in Asia, and to a lesser degree, North America.-- Reservoir Dogs - is a 1992 American crime thriller film that depicts the events before and after a botched diamond heist. The film was the feature-length debut of writer and director Quentin Tarantino, and stars Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi, Chris Penn, Lawrence Tierney, and Tim Roth. It incorporates many themes that have become Tarantino's hallmarks: violent crime, pop culture references, profanity, and nonlinear storytelling.-- Pulp Fiction - is a 1994 American black comedy neo-noir crime film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, from a story by Tarantino and Roger Avary. Directed in a highly stylized manner, Pulp Fiction connects the intersecting storylines of Los Angeles mobsters, fringe players, small-time criminals, and a mysterious briefcase. Zach Even - Esh has a passion for old school strength, which is the way people trained back in the 1960’s and prior. Zach’s training information began cultivating back in 1989 in his older brother’s room where a 90 lb. sand filled Joe Weider weight set and an adjustable Weider Bench were all Zach had. Through many years in hard core bodybuilding and wrestling, Zach learned the ins and outs of what worked and what didn’t work. The days of training in his brother’s room led to the outdoors at beat up, thugged out playgrounds, dingy basements, crappy garages and finally, Zach’s very own Underground Strength Gym, a hardcore athletic trianing facility located in Edison, NJ.
