America's Greatest Generation (born before 1945) witnessed incredible changes in technology and social progress. From simple improvements in entertainment to life-changing medical advances, technology changed the way they live, work, and identify. Sadly, with each passing year, fewer members of the Greatest Generation remain alive to share their wisdom as the last Americans to grow up before the digital revolution. In 2015, Millennial author and cultural anthropologist Veronica Kirin drove 12,000 miles across more than 40 states to interview the last living members of the Greatest Generation. Stories of Elders is the result of her years of work to capture and share their perspective for generations to come. Stories of Elders: What the Greatest Generation Knows about Technology that You Don't (2018) preserves the wisdom, thoughts, humor, knowledge, and advice of the people who make up one of America's finest generations, including the Silent Generation. Their stories include the devastation that came from major events in U.S. history like World War I, the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and World War II. The Greatest Generation (many of whom are now centenarians) saw the routine use of airplanes, cars, microwave ovens, telephones, radios, electricity, and the Internet come to fruition in their lifetimes. Their childhoods were simple, relying on outdoor games and imagination for fun. How they went to school, pursued their careers, and raised their kids was radically different than the way we live today. By chronicling more than 8,000 years of life lived during the most transitional time in American history, Stories of Elders offers old-fashioned wisdom and insight for America's future generations. That's five questions of coffee. No coffee today, I'm already caffeine out and the you don't want too much, or whatever I've already had for too much. So this is just a nice water with a piece of lime in it to keep me hydrated. But I'm here today with Veronica Kira, and I'm really looking forward to this conversation. Veronica helps real with real small, small business entrepreneurs to expand their empire. She talks about empire building, oh, it's gonna be a great conversation because I think empire building is a hugely interesting concept. So, Veronica, I'm really looking forward to this conversation. Welcome to It's not rocket science, five questions over coffee.Veronica Kirin  01:06Hi, Stuart. Thank you. And I actually, I'm drinking tea, not coffee as well. Well, over.Stuart Webb  01:13Yeah, years. So let's start with the first question. So can you describe those, those small business entrepreneurs who really want to build their empire? In a few sentences?Veronica Kirin  01:25Yeah, definitely. So I, you're going to be somebody who is ready to build your empire. If you've been in business for over two years, and you're starting to feel like you're hitting a ceiling. You don't know what that ceiling is. But for some reason, you can't seem to get to the next big leap, you have a bigger vision than what is happening right now. And it feels like you're constantly spinning your wheels. It's a hamster wheel that you're on, you can't get off of it. And it's actually really exhausting. And you're starting to wonder what the heck you were thinking in the first place?Stuart Webb  01:52Yeah, well, I think we've all had that feeling at one stage in our life. And we so So what sort of things do you think that most of those people have done to try and help themselves to overcome those sort of challenges before before they reach out for help?Veronica Kirin  02:07Yeah, so I have met a lot of entrepreneurs who dive into the books, take the courses, might even go on a retreat or two, they might hire a marketing director or a social media person to try to get the word out more because they think it just, it's about getting more customers and clients that if I can just get more clients and customers in, then everything will be okay, because it's actually a revenue problem. And in fact, it's not a revenue problem. The problem goes much deeper, which we'll talk about I think next.Stuart Webb  02:40Yeah, that's interesting. Because, because a lot of the time a lot of the a lot of problems. It isn't about the sort of the, the way in which you're presenting yourself, it's understanding your customer or something like that. It's getting into those sorts of things, isn't it?Veronica Kirin  02:54Yeah, well, it's about the scaling toolkit. So if you imagine that you have a toolbox of your business knowledge, you might be stellar at whatever it is that you do, like you're a photographer, you're an artist, you're really, really good at messaging and content development. That doesn't necessarily mean that you have a really big business toolbox. And to add to that, if you don't have scaling tools in your business toolbox, then that's where the hamster wheel starts to release. SoStuart Webb  03:23this is where we this is where we come to your valuable free action, I guess, which I'm going to display on a ticker beneath you now, which is, which is this is where we get interesting information from you the the the toolbox are a sight into that toolbox. Tell us about that. Yeah,Veronica Kirin  03:40yeah. So I am a skilling coach for small business owners, I steal the startup scaling tools and give them to small business owners because I was that small business owner, who was languishing in burnout, and had no idea that scaling was even allowed for small businesses, because they make it sound like it's only for Fortune 500 companies, which is just wild to me. And so I in the roadmap that you described that we see scrolling below, I've taken the three pillars of business scaling the three simple things that small business owners need to do in order to scale and can start implementing now. And I've put them into a guide that will identify where you are on the roadmap and what you need to do next in order to start to relieve that hamster wheel pain.Stuart Webb  04:31And, you know, you're talking about small business owners who don't have access to that. What are the sort of what are the sort of tools that you're talking about?Veronica Kirin  04:40Yeah, so I'm, I'm talking about things like creating systems for every actionable step within your company. So anything that's repeating in your company should be systemized and laid out a lot of entrepreneurs and small business owners that I meet are trying to hold everything in their heads. They haven't externalised their tasking, they haven't externally realise their systems or processes. And so when it comes time to take an action in the business, there's a lot of thinking that's going on and is exhausting them instead of leaving them in the creative space of the visionary CEO that they're trying to become. So one of the major tools I instal is to create systems, and then I help my clients. I've done a lot of the systems already, because I've had several businesses. So I'll show you the shortcuts into creating the system so that you can get into action and growth rather than into the just creating the things,Stuart Webb  05:32right, if you're talking my language, it's a lot of the stuff that I do, I sort of I spent a lot of my time scaling businesses, I took one business from 60 to 600 people. And the last thing you want to do is have absolutely no systems in place for 600 people because you would just never get anything done. You've got to have system to get to this.Veronica Kirin  05:51Even the hiring the hiring process. Like if you don't have a system and process for that you're hiring blind, and people don't realise that you need more than just a list of skills in order to hire someone.Stuart Webb  06:01Brilliant, brilliant. So what's the book or concept or talk that's really inspired you and that you think would be great value to the audience listening at the moment, and we haveVeronica Kirin  06:13what's up everybody? Of course, you though, because you do such a good job with the show. So actually, I give one book to every single client when we start working together. And it's called the success principles. by Jack Canfield. Yes, he's the guy who wrote Chicken Soup for the Soul that threw me for a loop when people were recommending it to me way back in the day. But it is, I kind of call it my my Bible, like, it's one of those books you can crack open, it's actually right here behind me. You can just pull it open, flip to a page and have incredible impact in your life that day. And even though I've read it, and I've read it several times, it's still something that I pull open regularly. It truly, truly, truly changed my life. It's a whole story. I don't think we have time for it. But I can I can fundamentally say my life would not be what it is today without that book.Stuart Webb  07:10Oh, brilliant. I love hearing about books that have done that to people. I know that that changed my life. And it's actually by the founder of McDonald's, which actually is another great book along exactly the same lines. It's a really good book.Veronica Kirin  07:21Is that the Golden Arches book that you can about? Yeah, I have that on my e reader. And I haven't read it yet. Okay,Stuart Webb  07:26you gotta read that one. That's another one. That's your fundamentally, it's really inspiring for small people that are thinking to themselves, can I make this business bigger? And the answer is yes, you can. But you've just got to learn to let go of things delegate, which is another one of the things that I think people need to learn more of delegation is a key skill that so many people just, you know, they think it's going to be easier to sort of keep doing it myself, because it's difficult to learn how to delegate and I teach people just, it's four steps to delegate something. And once you've got those four steps, you can actually expand your environment here, expand the universe, because you can do so you know, this is a task I need you to do. Well, I can go and do something which I'm, you're better at than me. I can go and do something that I'm good at. You could do what you're good at, let's do the things together.Veronica Kirin  08:08Yeah. And a lot of business owners, I noticed try to hire, like many me's, they keep trying to find someone who can do what I do, but just like do it within this other area. And that's not what you want to be doing. You want to be hiring specialties in fragment yourself. So this area of the business gets better and this area of the business gets better and it just expands and expands. Oh, yes.Stuart Webb  08:32Yes. key skill for me actually dropped down. We spoke about this for many hours, I suspect is hire those people that are actually better at it than you are. Because you're creative. The last thing you want is another creative person. You need somebody who's a great Completer finisher, you need somebody who's great at a camp. So you go hire a great person, a captain leave the camps alone, because they no longer you what you're good at. Right?Veronica Kirin  08:54You're the visionary in your industry. That's why you started the business, you had a vision for your industry for your specialty. And that's where you need to stay. That's the lane that you should be staying in as founder and CEO.Stuart Webb  09:07So we come to what is probably the most important question here, which is what is the one question that I should have asked you, which I haven't yet that you would like me to have asked? And what's the answer to the question?Veronica Kirin  09:21So I think you sort of asked me what an empire is. And the answer to that question is a business that has multiple income streams and widespread impact. Basically people who want to leave a legacy but not just not just by staying in one lane, they want to be able to have impact through multiple income streams and multiple offerings.Stuart Webb  09:43I love that. I love that definition of an empire. In a world of tech-lords and big business, we are seeing the rise of a new kind of “nation-state,” — billionaires. Our society has expectations for us. That is why so very often, we tend to put ourselves inside a box, hesitating to go beyond it and do what it is we really want to do. It is time to get outside of the box and challenge the status quo as Dr. Gary Sanchez sits down with anthropologist, author, and serial entrepreneur, Veronica Kirin, to tell us how. Facing the natural struggle of having an imposter syndrome whenever we try something new, Veronica offers her insights and advice on how we can manage it. She further breaks down some of the common reasons we find ourselves feeling in the wrong place and how to overcome it. Veronica also taps into defining our identity, the choices we have to shape it, and the roadmap it provides to our lives. What is more, she then takes us into her award-winning book, Stories of Elders, an anthropological study about the paradigm shift of the high-tech revolution. Her career started with two terms in the National Civilian Community Corps, with whom she deployed across the nation performing disaster relief and humanitarian aid. She has since founded nonprofits, startups, and small businesses. She is regularly engaged as a Coach to advise early- to mid-stage businesses to scale their reach. She not only specializes in building new businesses from the ground up but also restructuring internal business systems for growth-oriented operational efficiency. Veronica has commanded all facets of brand strategy, business operations, web management, B2C and B2B marketing, business scaling, and entrepreneurial financial literacy, to place her as one of the top, sought-after coaches for growth-stage businesses. She speaks at conferences and events worldwide to shift the mindset of business leaders and give them the tools they need to scale. Stories of Elders America's Greatest Generation has witnessed the onset of an incredible evolution of technology and social progress. From mere entertainment to life-changing advances, technology has changed the way we live, work, and identify. Sadly, with each passing year, fewer of members of the Greatest Generation are still alive to share their wisdom as the final generation to grow up before the digital revolution. Stories of Elders preserves the wisdom, thoughts, humor, knowledge, and advice of the people who make up one of America's finest generations, including the Silent Generation. These fascinating people not only experienced rapid social and technological advancements but also devastation in their daily world. Major historical events like World War I, the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and World War II shaped their youth and molded their lives. The Greatest Generation saw the routine use of airplanes, cars, microwave ovens, telephones, radios, and the internet come to fruition in their lifetimes. Many spent portions of their lives without electricity, using kerosene lamps for light. Their childhoods were simple, relying on outdoors games and imagination for their fun. How they went to school, pursued their careers, and raised their kids was radically different compared to today. New generations, more than ever, look to the exciting future for guidance instead of the stories of our last living elders. By chronicling more than 8,000 years of life lived during the most transitional time in American history, Stories of Elders offers old-fashioned insight no other book can. Got the chance to talk with Veronica Kirin recently, Founder of Audacious Entrepreneur Coaching. And although she helps entrepreneurs figure out how to wield their crazy new business that they're building, we actually talked about something totally different. Veronica's been traveling around (well, virtually now) documenting what it's like for people as we face the challenges that COVID-19 bring to us. She's done this previously by compiling books about The Greatest Generation and what life was like for them--a generation that quickly is fading out from age--so that valuable memories aren't lost to history. And now she's doing it for us, today. This is a deviation from the normal feel of the podcast but I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Entrepreneur, coach and author of “Stories of Elders”, Veronica Kirin shares her fascinating story of experiencing an anticipated tsunami while working as a humanitarian aid in a coastal Village in Samoa in 2009. Despite the fact that the tsunami never came, the anticipation and terror, confusion and chaos that she experienced side by side with the villagers that day led her to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Injury (formerly post traumatic stress disorder). Because the tsunami never actually came, her reactions to the trauma were minimized by those around her and she was expected to go on with life as usual. As a result she hid her suffering, for fear that her struggle would be seen as a failure to cope. Veronica's untreated trauma eventually caught up with her and in her darkest moments, she realized that she needed help. Her journey towards healing lead her on a quest for self care, which she now shares with others in her work as a coach. Her boyfriend had also broken up with her when she decided to apply to the peace corps. After talking to a friend, she decided to seek help to love herself more through two paths. One of them was reiki and the other was self-love. Her body completely healed after she learned to accept her own love and began making lifestyle changes like yoga and becoming vegetarian. She decided to help others as she helped herself, and Love Renegades was born. Lauren is an unconventional relationship coach who helps clients unapologetically be themselves through radical self-love and breaking the laws of love---which is a Love Renegades expression---for making choices according to their own principles and NOT according to what society or others think they should do.If you’d like to learn more about Lauren, go to her website and take her free quiz HERE.Listen to the full episode below.Follow Lauren on instagram and facebook.

Veronica Kirin is here today to talk about being intentional with your technology. Veronica is the author of Stories of Elders: What the Greatest Generation Knows about Technology that You Don't. This is a fascinating look into “The Greatest Generation” (born before 1945) and the last generation born before the digital revolution. Veronica is an anthropologist turned entrepreneur. She is a Forbes notable graduate of Grand Valley State University and a 40 Under 40 Business Leader. She is the founder of GreenCup Web Design and an entrepreneur coach to LGBTQ business owners. She is known for her Self Care Through Scaling™ program, and she is the founder of the Fempreneur Forum. It’s her passion to help entrepreneurs scale their businesses to reclaim freedom and time. Show Notes [03:11] Veronica is still an anthropologist. Anthropology is the study of people. She is a cultural anthropologist which studies current people. [04:15] Anthropology marries perfectly with entrepreneurship, because it teaches you to have insights into others especially those who aren't like you. [04:26] To understand your target client, you really need to predict their needs and wants. [05:56] Veronica's book is a bridge between anthropology and technology, as she noticed technology was starting to change her behaviors. She noticed she was sending texts instead of face to face interaction and also growing more depressed. [07:39] The elders in Veronica's book have lived approximately a lifetime without technology. She wanted the contrast between these people and younger people who only know technology. [08:19] People who grew up without tech have a completely different perspective on what is happening now. [08:51] She discovered that the elders had a deep sense of intentionality, and they wanted to choose whether they wanted this technology in their lives or not. [12:12] 25 is an important age because that is when the brain is fully developed. [13:31] One of her favorite stories in the book is Edwin Gould's story who engineered the first spy satellite for the country. The leaps we have no show the amazing shift. [16:16] Veronica did 100 interviews which amounted to about 8,000 years of stories for her book. She worked with an author coach which was really helpful. [18:07] She was also inspired by the author Racheal Rose Steil who wrote Running in Silence. They became friends and collaborate on different projects. [20:14] The book took three and a half years from inception to publishing. [24:00] To get these interviews, Veronica drove 12,000 miles through 40 States in 6 weeks. It was a very stressful experience, and she learned how important self-care really is. It took her six months before she could start processing these interviews. [25:51] She also learned to be more intentional about her technology use. She doesn't look at the phone first thing in the morning. She allows herself to walk away from the computer. Our bodies are designed to move and stop looking at screens. [27:27] She also has tech free monthly brunches. [30:51] Veronica used Kickstarter to fund her book and it became a staff pick. Technology has been critical in the production of her book. [34:28] Digital marketing has played a huge part in the promotion of her book. [35:42] Being an author is being an entrepreneur. If you don't have the marketing skills, hire someone who does. [36:59] Having a coach and mentor is so important. [37:37] To Veronica, success feels like moving forward and moving the needle. She also loves the energy derived from her client work. [39:05] If you want to do something, just start. You have what it takes to find what you need and make it happen. Veronica Kirin is an entrepreneur, social anthropologist, and the author of Stories of Elders: What the Greatest Generation Knows About Technology that You Don’t. The term “America’s Greatest Generation” was coined by Tom Brokaw in his 1998 Book The Greatest Generation. It refers to the generation that grew up in the Great Depression and came of age during the second world war. Stories of Elders is an in-depth, charming and highly relatable look at how the lives of our elders have been shaped by technology, and how they think it’s affecting our lives today. Despite her experience as a tech entrepreneur, Veronica turned to technology to raise the funds for her journey. However, Veronica didn’t rely on technology and sit at the computer or pick up the phone to gather her interviews. Powered by the success of her Kickstarter campaign, Veronica drove 11,487 miles across the United States to do the interviews live. In Stories of Elders, Veronica Kirin makes a compelling case for why we must use technology with intent. We must become aware of our vulnerabilities, set boundaries, and realize that technology is a tool and it’s up to us to take responsibility and determine its impact. Listen to this episode to hear Veronica Kirin share her perspective on: From inspired idea to fruition:  how Veronica turned her inspiration into an authoritative book and documentary using Kickstarter and all of her entrepreneurial skills. How Veronica's personal experience of trauma influenced how she interacted with 100 elders who have lived through war and the escalating changes of the past decades. Why it's essential for Millenials, Gen Y and Gen Xers to read Story of Elders. The impact of accelerated technology on communication and relationships. War and politics - how radio, television and the internet have influenced the way we vote. Technology and self care - how our elders are more intentional with their use and consumption of technology. How Veronica's experience and past roles are helping to create success for this book that she cares so deeply about! There comes a narrative turning point in the life of the person who makes their development their highest priority. When you find your internal motivation, your actions become immune to circumstance. But you can only reach this point through painful self-discovery. Veronica Kirin is an entrepreneurial success coach for women, an anthropologist, and the creator of an upcoming book featuring the life lessons of the “greatest generation” who grew up before our present technological abundance. Veronica and Gregory embark on a journey of understanding why we act the way we do, and how we use the tools of our world to get what we want. The new Wonder Woman movie tells the story of an idealistic hero whose motivations are faulty because she has no real world experience to test them against. By the end of the movie, after suffering great misery and having her motivations tested through trials, she realizes she now acts for a different reason. She isn’t acting to save other people for their sake or because they deserve it. She is acting because she has confidence in her beliefs that her standards for action are better, and she will uphold those standards no matter what changes around her. Nothing can destroy her now. She is internally invincible. She is a hero. Emergency situations test us because they suddenly remove the external conditions we have grown dependent on for maintaining the illusion of our comfortable motivations. When we are uncomfortable, only our internal conditions remain. Your internal motivation must be rock solid to operate under any possible circumstances. Self-doubt and humility keep you human. People have to know their weaknesses just as much as they know their strengths. Boredom is the opposite of fear and curiosity. It is the indifference to the stimuli in your environment. Fear is the rejection, and curiosity is the desire for more. Your weaknesses only matter if they stand in the way of your goals. They create struggle on the journey toward what you care about. Abilities only matter when you decide they do. When you are lacking a natural faculty, you can compensate with analysis and adaptation. We all rely on mental strategies and physical tools to accomplish what we want and make up for our weaknesses. You must adapt to the toolset that makes you category of actions comfortable. We are spoiled by our physical tools because we grow with it, so we take it for granted. Are you always using the best possible tool in any situation. People would rather never try something new than risk the discomfort of being bad at it for a time, and that shame is there greatest weakness of all. Shame can only exist when we compare ourselves to a standard someone else has given us. This is why children have so much less shame and so much more enthusiasm for trying new things. They have no other standards. Curiosity is gradually replaced by habit and routine as we age. You need passion to break out of the normality of your routines. Passion can look like many things besides curiosity and enthusiasm. Passion can be deeply negative, a righteous kind of anger. When conditions are comfortable, rely on your curiosity and enthusiasm to drive your actions. When conditions are uncomfortable, when things have started to go wrong, rely on anger and other negative emotions to drive you forward. The purpose of acting on a negative emotion is to reconcile the emotion as quickly as possible. You want to change the conditions which urgently created these bad feelings. The goal of positive emotions is to prolong them as long as possible by continually feeding them with new experiences. Every work of art, regardless of the medium, exists to foster a new emotion in the viewer. It is to make people think or feel differently than they did before. If you lack the emotional capacity to use your entire toolkit of emotions, you will also be unable to perceive of the world in a specific way when certain emotions are necessary to be accurate. Practice your ability to act in emergency settings to develop your emotions and hone your tools.   Things mentioned: Veronica Kirin: https://veronicakirin.com/ Untold Stories book by Veronica Kirin: http://untoldstories.life    @storiesofelders

Draw a line between work and life, advises entrepreneur Veronica Kirin. When you're starting a business you need to be intentional about planning down time, so you don't find yourself becoming a workaholic. Veronica Kirin is an anthropologist turned serial entrepreneur.  She loves working closely with clients to help them reach their goals.  Her first business, Green Cup Design, began as a freelance web design venture and has grown into digital maintenance for small businesses. Show notes at http://hellotechpros.com/veronica-kirin-unplugged/ Key Takeaways A college degree leads to opportunities, but many opportunities outside of that degree may open up as well. Entrepreneurs have a lot of pride in what they do and have a hard time letting go and letting others help. Are you a workaholic? Draw a line between your work and your life. Set a hard-stop time for yourself. Don't work during your days off. Set a slower pace in the morning during your days off. Try not to get into "checklist mode" during down times. Set personal goals for yourself, not just for your business. Focus on self-care. Create a process to transition into work-mode in the morning and back into unplugged mode in the evening. Make an effort to invest in personal relationships. Schedule recurring plans with friends. Make travel plans. Give yourself an "alternate schedule" with extra long weekends every now and then. When you are in the break-neck startup phase, set an intentional plan to step back and take time off so that you don't create a workaholic habit.
