Trinity College Dublin has announced the launch of the €1.3 million 'Twilight' project, aiming to revolutionise optical networks with cutting-edge digital twin technology, enabling rapid and disruption-free advancements. Minister for the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Patrick O'Donovan TD, has recently announced 28 funding awards valued at €34 million to support research across seven Higher Education Institutions. One of the awarded projects is Twilight: Twin Lightpaths, A Digital Twin Framework For Full Automation Of Disaggregated Optical Networks. Marco Ruffini, Professor at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), Principal Investigator in the CONNECT Centre, and lead author of the project proposal, emphasises the project's transformative potential: "Optical networks are the lifeblood of the internet. They must evolve to support the ever-increasing usage of the internet and digital innovations like Smart Cities and Virtual/Augmented Reality. Twilight's digital twin project will ensure safe, rapid advancements without network disruption. We are grateful to Minister O'Donovan for supporting this important initiative. I would also like to thank our colleagues from HEAnet and GÉANT who supported us and are going to be collaborating with us on this project." HEAnet, Ireland's National Education and Research Network, manages a national optical network of over 2,500 km, which is a central part of Ireland's national research infrastructure. HEAnet has collaborated with the SFI Connect Centre over many years, providing connectivity services and research demonstrations on the HEAnet production network. . In 2022, HEAnet connected directly to Prof. Ruffini's Open Ireland test network at Trinity College Dublin. This has provided Prof. Ruffini's group with access to the production HEAnet optical network while also enabling HEAnet to gain valuable insights into the characteristics of the HEAnet production network. HEAnet connects to the GÉANT pan-European research and education network in both Dublin and Cork. The Twilight project will provide optical connectivity from the Open Ireland test bed to the GÉANT optical network via the HEAnet network for the first time. Eoin Kenny, Innovation and R&D Manager at HEAnet, highlights the project's efficiency: "Planning network changes has always been challenging. Twilight's digital twin will streamline this process, save time and help HEAnet to optimise our network resources. We are very pleased with the work carried out on the OpenIreland research infrastructure and look forward to continuing this close collaboration." HEAnet is a member of GÉANT, the collaboration of European National Research and Education Networks (NRENs), who interconnects Europe's NRENs with the high bandwidth, high speed and highly resilient pan-European backbone, together connecting Europe's researchers, academics and students to each other, and linking them to over half the countries in the world. Guy Roberts, Senior Transport Network Architect at GÉANT also expressed enthusiasm for the Twilight project: "The future for anyone working with optical networks looks bright with all the new technologies on our side. We are continually dealing with the issues of dynamic provisioning of optical paths. Despite making extensive use of optical equipment vendors' planning tools, we have discovered anomalous situations that can lead to some level of service disruption. GÉANT will work with TCD and HEAnet to provide measurements to train the digital twin algorithms, help with any fine-tuning and carry out experiments on the use cases we have jointly defined." Today, we explore whether virtual and XR laboratories are an option to give students in developing countries pedagogical experiences necessary to develop practical skills. Hallie Applebaum (World Bank) speaks with Robert Dean (Associate Professor of Motion Arts Design and Virtual/Augmented Reality at Namseoul University in Korea), Jimmy Vainstein (Senior Program Manager leading the Word Bank's program on interactive media with a focus on developing XR solutions for development), Marjorie Chinen (Education Specialist and focal point for AR/VR on the World Bank EdTech team), and Diego Angel-Urdinola (Senior Economist and Global Lead for the World Bank's Skills Global Solutions Group and Manager of the Active Training Using Virtual Reality Program, ActiVaR). There is a strong need to provide students pedagogical experiences necessary to develop practical skills in education and workforce development programs, especially for training programs that require laboratories, such as auto-mechanics, nursing, and welding. Providing hands-on experiences and proper and up-to-date content allows students to learn technical skills, however this remains a critical challenge, mainly in developing countries. A potential solution to this is digitalization of laboratories. Employing non-immersive or immersive VR can enable learning experiences in a simulated or artificial environment so students can have personalized learning experiences. Our knowledge pack, a short comprehensive guide, on this topic is coming soon. We'll post the link here when it is available.

Virtual/Augmented Reality as the Ultimate Empathy Machine with Filmmaker Gabo Arora

Stories of Transformation

Gabo Arora is on the frontier of a new and exciting artistic medium - one you may not even know exists. He is among the visionaries leveraging virtual and augmented reality, and artificial intelligence, as tools in the art of filmmaking, the efficacy of storytelling, and the progress of positive social change. In this episode of Stories of Transformation, hear Gabo’s story of going from a boots-on-the-ground humanitarian, working in conflict zones around the world and documenting his experiences, to founding the creative arts studio LIGHTSHED, whose mission is to combine immersive reality with real-world change. In their own words, LIGHTSHED aims to “...shed light on the lives of everyday people struggling to overcome today’s structural inequalities. Because we believe that immersive storytelling leads to empathy - and empathy leads to action."As a young man, Gabo's passion for humanitarian work found him working on the ground in conflict zones around the world, documenting his experiences through film. When he found out he was going to become a father, Gabo decided it was time to put his more creative endeavors on the back burner in favor of a more stable, centralized career. He got a job at the United Nations, eventually becoming a senior advisor to the secretary general. While his work at the UN was still technically in the realm of humanitarianism, Gabo found himself growing tired of the bureaucratic methods through which the international organization operated.Over time, Gabo became disillusioned to the formulaic approach the UN took in their efforts, and he knew as well as anyone that their collective efforts were proving to be largely ineffective. Though the stability of the career was inviting, and even though he seemed to have “made it” in the traditional sense of the word, Gabo was unsatisfied with the work he was doing. Through a culmination of other factors, Gabo knew it was at that point or never that he redirect his efforts back to his creativity. His idea would come to manifest itself as the utilization of cutting-edge technologies to break new ground in the way we convey stories. With empathy as the emotion in mind, Gabo set out to offer people experiences unlike any other - an opportunity to see, hear, feel, and even communicate with parts of the world that are otherwise, to the average person, unreachable. To convey the day-to-day experience of those places that are in such dire need of understanding. Though his portfolio at LightShed is already vast, Gabo is just getting started with his work. As you’ll hear in this conversation, Gabo Arora and his team are more excited than ever about the potential of using technology as a means of eliciting empathy, and promoting meaningful action. For full show noteshttps://www.baktashahadi.com/podcastConnect with Gabo AroraWebsite: https://www.gaboarora.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/gaboarora?s=20LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gabo-arora-b7905011/ResourcesExperience Gabo Arora’s first VR film, Clouds Over Sidrahttps://www.with.in/watch/clouds-over-sidra/Learn more about LIGHTSHED - Gabo Arora’s creative technology studiohttps://lightshed.io/More information on the VR short film Flesh And Sand Flesh and SandFollow/Support Stories of Transformation and Baktash AhadiDonate to the production of this podcast https://www.baktashahadi.com/supportFollow us on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/stories_of_transformation/Follow us on Facebook Stories of TransformationCreditsHosted by: Baktash Ahadihttps://www.baktashahadi.comProduced by: Joseph Gangemihttps://www.linkedin.com/in/joseph-gangemi-audio/Digital Marketing & Media by: Katherine Anhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/katherine-a-91081b56/Theme music by: Qais Essarwww.therabab.comArtwork by: Masheed Ahadihttps://www.LinkedIn.com/in/masheedEpisode Music Credits"Reflections" by Swirling Ship"Mourning Our Loved Ones" by Sebastian Borromeo"New World" by Ian Post

As we look towards the future of innovation the question becomes what will the world look like powered by artificial intelligence integrated with augmented and virtual reality.  Before we can answer that question we must look at that underlying trends of today’s technology and why and how we are seeking these new experiences.  I believe we’ve spent the last 10 years using technology and digital media to distance ourselves from the human experience to the point where unplugging and meeting face to face has become the cool unique experience.  That trend has started to shift as we seek more humanized experiences enabled by technology and won’t settle for technology or digital media disrupting our lives.   I believe this trend means we’re moving from technology being an endpoint and online communication being about messages to technology being an amplification of experiences and online communication being about conversations. The future of innovation is collaboration and that collaboration will be powered and connected by conversations and trust.  This includes human to human, human to machine, machine to machine and beyond.  On this episode, I take a look at these trends and make predictions around sensory collaboration where the new innovations will include multiple levels of sensory activations. Few have contributed to this as much as Silicon Valley based startup accelerator Boost VC, which has been focusing on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency startups since 2013. Focusing exclusively on Bitcoin for an extended time, they’ve invested in companies such as Blockcypher, Coinprism, Coinjar, Mirror, Snapcard, Zapchain and many others.
