The highly anticipated U.S. Championship Cheese Contest is set to take place from March 4-6 in Green Bay. This prestigious event brings together cheese makers, judges, and industry professionals from across the country to celebrate excellence in cheese craftsmanship. Eric Vorpahl, Director of Procurement – Bulk Cheese & Risk Management for Masters Gallery Foods, plays a vital role in the competition’s organization. “This contest takes a village to pull off, and we have over 2,400 cheese samples to judge," says Vorpahl. The event, open to the public, offers a rare opportunity to witness expert judging firsthand. Attendees can observe the meticulous process of cheese evaluation, where judges assess each entry based on strict criteria. “Cheese is a perishable product, and handling it correctly is key,” Vorphal explained. “From refrigeration to proper labeling, every detail matters."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

1L strategy coach Angela Vorpahl returns to Thinking LSAT to discuss five common but misguided pieces of advice for incoming law students. She explains why these conventional 1L strategies fall short and suggests more effective alternatives. LSAT Demon LSAT Demon iOS App LSAT Demon Daily Watch Episode 454 Thinking LSAT YouTube LSAT Demon YouTube 3:08 - Class Prep vs. Exam Prep - Law professors insist that students should thoroughly read each assigned case. But reading every line of every case takes a huge amount of time. Angela advises students to invest their time in study methods that have a greater impact on their final grade. 20:15 - Note-Taking Strategies - Research suggests that students who take notes by hand might retain more information than students who type their notes. But for Angela's preferred method of note-taking, handwriting notes simply isn't fast enough. 33:05 - Study Supplements - Some law school traditionalists vilify study supplements like hornbooks, and they label students who use them as lazy. But these supplements aren't shortcuts; they're vital study tools—especially when professors routinely fail to teach the material in a straightforward way. 46:33 - Outlining Is Not Enough - A good outline may be necessary to succeed on law school exams, but it's not sufficient. Angela describes the extra study step that students should take after outlining. 56:21 - IRAC - “Issue, Rule, Application, and Conclusion” (IRAC) has long been the popular structure for legal analysis in law school. But Angela argues that IRAC misses the most important part of how students score points on final exams. 1:07:28 - Intermediate Conclusions - Don't worry too much about identifying intermediate conclusions. Focus on what the argument says. 1:16:26 - Academic Suspension - Nathan and Ben follow up on last week's story about an applicant who wants to remove an academic suspension from their transcript. 1:18:46 - Word of the Week - Halo Top is execrable.

Current applicants can rest assured that law schools will continue to value the LSAT and offer merit scholarships to attract high-scoring applicants. Angela joins Ben to discuss why students need actionable study plans. She also shares the top five mistakes that students make on final exams. 32:38 - Mistake #1: Not Creating a Study Plan - Angela explains why you shouldn't simply study for your first exam first. Instead, create a schedule that spaces out your study in the buildup to exam week. 41:30 - Mistake #2: Repeating the Facts of the Case - On law school exams, you don't get points for simply repeating the facts of the case. Instead, you should use the facts in the context of your arguments about the relevant issues. 45:21 - Mistake #3: Ignoring Format - Make an effort to format your arguments so the professor can more easily award you points for them. In some cases, this might mean numbering your arguments. 52:12 - Mistake #4: Not Talking to Your Professors - Angela recommends talking to your professors in person to ask about their formatting preferences for their final exams. Professors are also invaluable resources for finding jobs and securing letters of recommendation. 59:20 - Mistake #5: Trying to Get the Answers “Right” - On law school exams, you get points by making arguments and counterarguments for each issue you spot. You aren't expected to—and shouldn't try to—get the question “right.” Angela discusses why “thinking like a lawyer” helps avoid blind spots that might sabotage your exam. 1:05:41 - Final Advice - Angela advises you to think of law school as a step toward the life you want to build. After all, you attend law school to become a lawyer, not a law student.

In this week's episode, the ladies talk with Guest Angela Vorpahl about all things "Big Law." From what it means, how to get there in law school and what its like working there after graduation. To intro the episode the ladies talk about what it feels like to actually "take a break" and how it can be hard to turn your motor off! But what you've all been waiting for, an interview with a former "Big Law" associate turned law school coach. MAN, does she have great advice! She talks about her journey to law school and what it was like for her to go to law school at SMU. The ladies chat with her about all things from interviewing to pre-law jobs and scholarships, we even talk about the dreaded on-campus interviews (OCI). Angela also shares what she wishes she would have known before going to law school and sheds light on some of the differences between the work in law school vs. the real world. She shares her secrets to a good interview answer by explaining the "Broad-Narrow-Broad" approach to the question of "what kind of law do you want to practice?" Angela explains the transition from Big Law to another career in the law and quoted the book "Lean In" by saying "Your career is a jungle gym, not a ladder." SO TRUE. So take a listen and we hope you get as much out of this episode as we did! Dear Super Secret Valentine, I like you lots. I remember when I first noticed you when we almost died after being shrunk and swallowed by the ginger kid Arnold. Ms. Frizzle's class sure was scary. Anyway, because I was the only black kid in class you probably remember me for wearing the only orange space suit when we explored the solar system. Long story short, now I am on the internet radio and I made this Valentines show just for you. We do all you favorite things-- make fun of a fat person on an airplane, discover dino-love, try to understand why the Canadians are bad hosts of the Olympics, and wait in line for Wendy's Grand Slam. It will be all the fun of our normal trips without the normal dangers associated with atom compression or ripping apart the space time continuum. Hope you enjoy it. Love you always.
