Recounting the profound, yet tiny moments and details of everyday life in the backcountry, Justin joins us to discuss his time at Philmont Scout Ranch. As a participant and on staff, Justin spent a decade growing and giving in the High Country. Justin shares how he aspired to leadership positions in order to give back and share what he had learned in previous summers. On the tough days, Justin reminds us of the power of spending time with crews, and of the Ranch-wide aim of changing lives. Justin, who has published two photography books related to Philmont - Wild and Untamed and Last Summer at Camp - dives into the phases of the creative process. From the seemingly easy “cotton candy” images such as sunrise or sunset, to the quiet images that tell an unseen story, Justin brings us behind the scenes (the lens rather) of his photo narrative journeys. Leaving us with an encouraging note to “Go make the thing and inspire someone else to do the same,” listeners are reminded to resist silencing the creative abilities that lie within each of us. Thank you Justin for your words, images, and bursts of laughter. Happy trails! Notable mentions:In 2002, Bob Mosher was the Roving Prospector. Then in 2008, Ross Robinson held the position. TB and Clare are working on the second draft of their cowrite, and they survived a three-and-a-half-hour phone call going over the entire book. It was draining but time well spent. TB has slowly been getting caught up with emails and admin tasks. Clare has purchased a chair but isn’t sure about it yet. Maybe in two weeks she won’t be so frown-y about it. Also, Clare is in the beginning stages of getting new covers for her All I Want series. Clare has been watching videos about cutting hair, while TB took cat trimmers to the back of her head and learned it’s hard to keep it even. Now for the question of the week: What is resistance and how to overcome it? Resistance comes for you every single day and can manifest in many ways such as: cleaning, checking social media, online shopping, or trimming your toenails. What’s the basis of it? Fear, procrastination, arrogance, self-sabotage, and self-doubt. TB opens up about an epic battle with resistance two Januaries ago when she almost quit writing. It was a dark time for her. Clare shares about a recent episode of resistance and another time when she struggled (also during a January) and hired a life coach. The duo believes the way to beat resistance is to acknowledge it and to stick with habits, rituals, deadlines, and goals. Or as Clare says: learn to dance with it. How do you battle resistance? Head over to www.lesbianswhowrite.com, and leave a comment on the episode. Or you can email them at: lesbianswhowrite@gmail.com. Stop back next week for a chat about what entertainment the two turn to during times of strife. Happy listening! Shownotes: http://fizzleshow.com/338 Which strategies help us stay productive with the bulk of our time? What do we do when one of these strategies loses its effect? What is the right balance between being focused on productivity and actually being productive? In the online business world, there is more than enough literature and content offering you ways to be more productive! These ideas can often be really helpful, sometimes seem like noise and can distract you from what is important. We want to assess where the general productivity conversation is currently situated and help you to gauge where you are with it! In this episode, we break down the ever-evolving inner and outer world of productivity. A common experience for many people seems to be that tactics and systems can help a lot but that their effect can wear off over time. So one of the main issues here seems to be how to pivot at the right point to a new way of doing things. Today on the show we are joined by our old bestie Chase Reeves and past guest / great friend Mike Vardy. Mike is a productivity expert who runs Productivityist and has some great, sometimes strange, routines that we cannot wait to share with all of you! We also talk about maintaining focus, virtual assistants, the negative side of productivity and what theming your time can offer you. For all this and more, join us today for another great show! Today's episode is brought to you by Podia. Podia is a Swiss Army Knife for selling anything you need online. We as humans make things SO complicated and much harder than they need to be.The majority of people overlook simplicity and set themselves up for failure because of it, as if they’re looking for some bullshit secret ingredient. In this episode, I talk about why I think success is super simple (though not so easy), chasing discomfort, the hardest part of progress, and the simple formula I use to create my best progress (and what I’ll continue to use long term to create the incredible life I desire, day by day) This is one of my favourite episodes I’ve ever done. I love these practical episodes because I know if you follow what I talked about here, you’ll be able to move forward, get unstuck and create some kickass results for yourself. Even though it's simple, it's likely going to be tough. Most will either overlook the simplicity because they're looking for something more complex, or it'll get too hard and they'll retreat back to comfort, settling for mediocrity and not aiming for something greater. If you do choose to be make the smart decision of building skill in this area, your future self will thank you. If you this episode brought you some value, please do me a favour and share with a friend that you think could find benefit in this piece of content. Massive love and gratitude for watching and listening friends. YOU ARE A MADE-UP STORY Your life is make believe. I expect you to deny it and call me crazy. How can your very “real” life be make believe? How can your dreams, your hopes, your joy, and your pain be make believe? Bear with me. I’m not saying your life is fake. I’m saying that you and I and everyone else create our lives, our realities, through stories that begin in the imagination and are embellished by our minds. Is that good or bad? Willie Shakespeare said it best in Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 2, “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” And our boy, Willie, earned the right to say that. He was so damned good at storytelling! So, what the hell does any of this have to do with today’s podcast? Everything. Our guest is Dr. Adrian McIntyre, a storytelling master who helps people achieve high performance communication. Adrian understands that we are all hardwired to tell and love stories. He’s a guy with a heightened self-awareness. He will expand your mind in this podcast episode where you will learn: How story is natively human Why stories “wake you up” by releasing feel good chemicals in your brain The brilliant insight that “story is to humans as water is to fish” The simple story structure that will immediately make you a better storyteller The relationship between drama and your personal and business stories Why you should understand the Hero’s Journey How “story listening” gives you greater storytelling power Why your weaknesses hold the key to your strength and success The importance of discovering your “story-print” (not unlike your fingerprint) How story can help you grow by serving the world SO MUCH MORE… BOOKS IN THIS PODCAST The War of Art (https://www.amazon.com/War-Art-Steven-Pressfield-ebook/dp/B007A4SDCG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1536364349&sr=8-2&keywords=the+war+of+art) by Steven Pressfield (Adrian’s favorite book) The Myth of Sisyphus (https://www.amazon.com/Myth-Sisyphus-Essays-Vintage-International-ebook/dp/B009UAO2H8/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1536364477&sr=1-1&keywords=the+myth+of+sisyphus) by Albert Camus The Hero’s Journey: The Collected Works of Joseph Campbell (https://www.amazon.com/Heros-Journey-Collected-Joseph-Campbell/dp/B07FPQ3WJ1/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1536364585&sr=1-7&keywords=the+hero%27s+journey) by Joseph Campbell The Hero with a Thousand Faces (https://www.audible.ca/pd/The-Hero-with-a-Thousand-Faces-Audiobook/B071F6T4LV?qid=1536364823&sr=sr_1_1&ref=a_search_c3_lProduct_1_1&pf_rd_p=65c74350-6dfb-47fa-85fd-1459a4762abd&pf_rd_r=VRAQPEY214B6ETG9MKGN&) by Joseph Campbell (audio book) ADRIAN’S FAVORITE QUOTE “Wisdom begins in wonder.” – Socrates FREE AUDIOBOOK OF YOUR CHOICE Audible (https://www.audible.ca/?ref=Adbl_ip_rdr_from_US&source_code=CANGBHP09121700NN&ipRedirectFrom=US&ipRedirectOriginalURL=lp%2Ffreetrial%3Fsource_code%3DPDTGBPD060314004R) CONTACT ADRIAN www.StoryProfit.com (https://about.me/adrianmcintyre)
The War of Art - by Steven Pressfield 'Break through the blocks and win your inner creative battles' If you're looking to achieve anything, especially something creative, you almost definitely have the skills and abilities to be able to do it. For example, if you want to be a writer, based on the fact that you're reading this, you have the ability to read and write. But being able to write isn't the be-all-and-end-all of actually writing a book. "There's a secret that real writers know that wannabe writers don't... It's not the writing part that's hard. What's hard is sitting down to write." What keeps us from sitting down to write? The Resistance. This book is all about The Resistance, and is broken into three parts: Defining the Enemy, Combatting Resistance, The Higher Realm. For anyone who wants to pursue a creative endeavour but has never been able to actually sit down and do the work, this book serves as a great kick in the behind. Sally-Jo O'Brien helps people be braver in whatever they want to be braver in. For entrepreneurs, it’s about being braver in their approach and attitude about their business. She also helps with career transitions. Sally Jo's friends call her "The Queen of Re-Invention." She’s had three big career and life shifts herself including her husband passing away in 2005. In launching her coaching business Sally-Jo had to retrain herself and learn to coach. During the launch of Sally Jo’s coaching business, she was still doing some things in the food industry and those two things intersected. She started getting a lot of referrals for coaching and decided to go into that full-time. LEVERAGE Sally Jo leverages her time through group coaching. She also leverages her time through Zoom. She uses it for coaching and for masterminds. Recently she led training for someone else’s mastermind through Zoom. VALUES During a career or business transition you need to reassess your values and figure out what’s important to you. Ask what’s important to me now? What do I care about now? Depending on the phase of life that you are in, what's important to you is changing. Constantly re-evaluate and determine what’s important, so that you can make good decisions. There’s also a need to develop new rituals. Some of the rituals that you had when you worked for someone don’t always work when you are working from home, or for yourself. ROUTINES AND RITUALS Create routines and rituals that will support you getting work done. Sally Jo says it helps to be around people that help you to move momentum forward. One another way is to check in with someone each day. Sally Jo knows of someone who texts a supporting friend and tells them three things that they are going to get done each day. Sally Jo had a coach that helped her transition from what she was doing as she was navigating a personal loss and she found it to be hugely valuable. This experience is what ultimately led her to be a coach too. DISCOVER YOUR VALUES To help discover your values think about a teacher or a coach that you loved and think about what it was about them that you admired. What did you like about them or what didn’t you like about them? Or think of a character in a book who is a hero of yours. What are the characteristics of that character in the book? What will help you to start to mine for values that will shape your decisions and your business. TV SHOW VALUES Still, another question to ask to help you discover your values is to ask: if you were to star in your own award-winning television show what would be the name of the show be and why would people tune in to the show? What value would people get out of it? CLIENT STORY Sally Jo’s had a client that wanted to get out there and meet potential clients but realized that she was hiding. Sally Jo helped her discover what was going on and that led to a breakthrough. We discuss "The Daring Way developed by Dr. Brune Brown. How shame comes into play in business and holds us back. You might be holding onto something that you think is wrong with you (shame)versus something that you did wrong. It’s an important distinction. “I made a mistake” versus “I am a mistake” (shame). Taylor Pearson is the innovative mind behind ‘The End of Jobs', a new book that focuses on the rise of entrepreneurship and why it's a better career choice for today. Taylor doesn't consider his path from software developer to self-published author a complete transition. Instead, he's always thought of his career and life in terms of trajectory, always improving and accelerating to the next level. That's not to say that he wasn't a little bit nervous about putting pen to paper! But, he'd prepared himself and felt reasonably confident enough to go ahead and give it a try. Turns out, he's pretty great at it. Taking inspiration from the book, ‘The 12 Week Year', Taylor spent only 9 months on ‘The End of Jobs', and it has been incredibly successful, quickly rising to the top of Amazon's business category. Despite the book's title, it is not a blueprint on how to immediately quit your ‘day job' and start your own business. Instead, the premise of the book looks at the four distinct economic phases that the West has experienced and why entrepreneurship is such a great choice. It's more of a thought process rather than an ‘action list'. So many of us have been trained to follow certain professional scripts but entrepreneurship puts you in charge of writing your own script. That means everyone from the established business owner to the employee can embody the principles of entrepreneurship; it's about a creativity mindset, a new way of thinking about work and a new view way of viewing the world. Taylor and I sit down today to chat about lessons he learned during his book launch and how becoming an author has opened new doors for him and broadened his view on what is possible. Many of us have an internal force, a resistance, that holds us back from ourselves. Going to war with that resistance, driving ourselves forward every day, is BOLD! Sit down, take a listen and get inspired by this episode of the Bold Life Movement with Taylor Pearson! Some questions I ask: What does the mindset shift look like from employee to entrepreneur to self-published author? What are the 4 stages of the book launch process? Should first-time authors pursue self-publishing or seek a traditional publishing house? Which thought leaders have been integral for his success? What motivates Taylor to explore the implications and possibilities of entrepreneurship? In This Episode, You Will Learn: Strategies for gauging interest in your book during the first-draft stage Why Facebook groups are absolutely essential for building a community around your book How the ‘Thunderclap' stage of a book launch creates excitement and a sense of urgency The overall benefits of initially offering your book for free The value of joining Mastermind groups and tips on how to find and join them Plus much more… Continue Seeking Greatness: www.taylorpearson.me www.taylorpearson.me/jesusmarketing https://www.facebook.com/taylor.pearson.904?fref=ts Twitter: www.twitter.com/TaylorPearsonMe The End of Jobs: www.amazon.com/The-End-Jobs-9-5/dp/1619613352 The 12 Week Year: www.12weekyear.com/book-info The War of Art: www.amazon.com/The-War-Art-Steven-Pressfield-ebook/dp/B007A4SDCG Ray Dalio Principles: www.bwater.com/Uploads/FileManager/Principles/Bridgewater-Associates-Ray-Dalio-Principles.pdf Anti-Fragile: www.amazon.com/Antifragile-Things-That-Disorder-Incerto/dp/0812979680
