Stress is a reality for so many people these days, and yet, the path forward through it can seem so complex, and sometimes even debilitating. In this episode we talk about how we think stress is in our heads, but when we pay attention, we notice how it show up in the body. The impact of stress can be profound – and often also shows up in the body. Susan vulnerably discusses how stress for her was internal first, then led to back problems, hair loss, and other embodied signs that she couldn't ignore any more. For Susan the simple act of cutting her hair was a way to take her power back. Many of us struggle with the dangerous desire to be perfect believing it will create comfort. We are led to believe that perfectionism and doing it all “just right” will create more control. This conversation challenges that ideal with the power of surrender. Surrendering to your life can be hard when you have been driven by the need for perfection – especially if you've been messaged that it is the only way to feel safe. This episode invites you to lean into surrender as a way to manage anticipatory anxiety – as a step to moving toward surrender, with a reminder that the idea of doing it is actually harder than the action. Surrendering is about accepting where you are RIGHT NOW. You can be here and now and be okay. You do not have to force things. We also discuss: -Being defined by your trauma - Surrender and anxiety -Flow -What you resist persists -Process is an ongoing practice -Being intentional The healing path is never over. Showing up for yourself now is the first step, and as Susan reminds us, there is so much personal power that comes from “minding your own plate.” About the Guest: Susan is a Psychotherapist based in New York and the host of Dreams and Detours, the podcast. Her deep desire to shift from surviving to thriving led her on a long journey to heal old trauma while seeding herself for self-love and compassion. Susan's strength, courage, and curiosity led her to become a Certified Holistic Health & Wellness Counselor in 2006, earn a Bachelors of Social Work in 2017, and Master of Clinical Social Work in 2021. Always the cheerleader, Susan encourages others to be true to themselves, and to embrace their beauty and flaws. About the Host: Tanya is your no-bs friend, teacher, social worker, and life coach! Her life has been many wtf moment including becoming a widow, struggling with weight and body image issues, dating after loss, single parenting, remarriage, and blending families. She is joyfully married to her second soul mate, the parent of 4 incredible kids (one of whom is LGBTQ2S+), and the momma to a sheepadoodle named Walter. Join me for a fascinating conversation about the holistic and entertaining realm of hula hoop. A new fitness love of mine. Hula Hoops are no longer just for the kids. in fact, the contrary. There is a community of adults like myself who enjoy hoops anywhere be it indoors or outdoors. We don't mind showing our hip motions. It was a pleasure to meet and learn from Denise E. Williams, a Master Hooptress, Wellness Counselor, and Healing Touch Certified Practitioner who resides in Chicago Illinois, She invented an original movement class called "Holistic Hoop," and incorporates her professional dance experience, along with music and colorful costumes as she tap dances to music from the 1940's. Denise is the epitome of "50's the better half," and shows and tells the world how relevant we still are in this beautiful chapter of life during our discussion. This year has been a mental and emotional test of endurance like no other. Add to the pandemic the already existing stresses and pressures in the cafe as customer face professionals and you get a perfect storm of both feeling the need for mental health wile simultaneously feeling helpless to actualize it. Even though mental health has been top of mind, it can be hard to move it from a "Should" to "Must" and as we look forward to the new year at the close of this incredibly challenging one, resolving to prioritize our mental health will make a monumental difference both for us personally and the people we lead. To help guide us in this pursuit we are going to be talking with Dr. Lara Pence! Dr. Pence attended graduate school at Widener University where she obtained her Doctorate Degree in Psychology (PsyD) and her Masters in Business Administration (MBA). In 2010, she opened her own private practice, Chief Mind Works, in Dallas, TX. Early in her career she worked primarily with individuals suffering from eating disorders, anxiety, and depression both through individual work as well as intensive group workshops. She later branched out to work more specifically with entrepreneurs who were looking to elevate their leadership skills and execute more efficiently at work, and professional athletes who needed support in understanding the mind/body connection and its impact on performance. In 2018, Dr. Pence began consulting for Spartan Race, the largest endurance racing organization in the world to implement a curriculum that provides a mental pathway to change and transformation, and began hosting a weekly video series, Spartan MIND. Dr. Pence also works at the Unbeatable Mind Coaching Program alongside Mark Divine, and has recently launched her own product – LIGHFBOX – a tool used to strengthen mental health and wellness. She also began a new podcast, Curious Minds with Dr. L, where she and her guests use curiosity as the cure for stagnation. She has served on the Board of Directors for various non-profit organizations, and has been featured in various publications, media outlets, and podcasts, including Good Morning America, the BBC, Glamour, Vogue, WebMD, Psychology Today, and the Huffington Post. In today's conversation with Dr. Pence we are going to explore many absolutely critical topics that will set us up to prioritize our mental health in the new year. This is the perfect way to end the year and I hope you get a lot out of this episode! We will be covering: Why dont we prioritize our mental health Taking stock of our relationships Making mental health practices stick How knowing our values guides our success Self and situational awareness The masks we wear Matching values to circumstance What are common things that degrade our mental health Setting boundaries The value of hard conversations Negativity bias Checking in with ourselves and others Links: www.drlarapence.com Instagram Related Episodes: 201 : Igniting your Curiosity w/ Cody Gough 213 : Coping with Corona using Emotional Intelligence w/ Andrea Hoban of Oji Life Lab 176 : Harnessing Emotions at Work w/ Andrea Hoban of Oji Life Lab 095 : Dealing with Stress in the Cafe w/ Wellness Counselor, Joe Sanok 111 : Self Care 101: Taking care of yourself while taking care of others Need consulting? Oooh boy - This is a phrase frequently used often in coffee to determine whether or not an employee is exceptional or not. It is also a mentality that we use on ourselves to determine if what we are doing is worthy of praise or earning our keep. Going above and beyond may be a nice and generous thing to do, the problem though is when becomes a tool to unfairly judge employees and to unfairly judge ourselves. I and many others have suffered under unreasonable standards that have been both imposed by bosses and self-imposed out of insecurity. Today we will be discussing how this manifests and what to do to avoid "going above and beyond" to the detriment of yourself and others. Related Episodes: 200! : From Tragedy to Triumph! There is an abundance of stress to go around right now. I'd say it is likely the most tense and uncertain time I have seen in coffee in my 20 years of working in retail. Stress leads to more stress and as someone who is prone to stress/panic attacks etc I feel this reality all too well. The question is, since it does not seem to be letting up, what do we do with it? Today I wanted to briefly chat about not stressing about stress and turning the tables on it to use it to our advantage. I’ll bet you know at least 8 people; Friends, coworkers, students, family members. Did you know that, of those 8 people, at least one of them will struggle with infertility? Sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? Well, it is. 1 in 8 people struggle with infertility and you may never even know it. Why? Because our society often tells women that our bodies are taboo, that our disorders and struggles should remain on the down low and we should remain hush hush about them. Join me, Monica Wallace, Licensed Midwife and Womens Health Educator and Wellness Counselor, as we take a look at the infertility struggle for women today and why our struggles do NOT need to be hush hush any longer. We’re having real, authentic conversations, not only for women who are suffering, but also for women who know, care for, or love someone who is struggling as well. It’s time that we start holding space for, and supporting women in, telling their stories as the first step in creating awareness and helping others, and ourselves, to heal and feel empowered to do so. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/womenshealthmatters/message
Colette, a native of Ireland, immigrated to the US in her early 20's where she worked in corporate America for over a decade. Wanting to hop off the corporate hamster wheel, she pursued her passion for health and fitness and began a full-time career in this field. In 2008 she moved to Nice, France and opened a fitness and yoga studio. She was also an avid competitor, taking part in many sporting events, however, even with all her ‘healthy' efforts, her health was not in a good place. In 2014, Colette took some time out to cleanse and reset her body. She underwent a 21 day Ayurvedic cleanse program in Bali and this is what changed her life personally and professionally. After the cleanse, she stayed in Bali, working with the Ayurvedic Doctor for a year. Colette also completed her studies to become an Ayurveda Wellness Counselor and began her online business, Elements Healing and Wellbeing and her podcast Elements of Ayurveda. Elements Healing & Wellbeing takes a natural, holistic approach to healing, incorporating the body, mind, and soul. Using the ancient teachings of Ayurveda (the Wisdom of Life) to connect people to their ‘true nature' (unique mind/body type), to Mother Nature and to each other. “I believe that life is a journey of self-realization and this journey begins with a self-study and understanding our own ‘true nature' or unique mind/body type. We can then understand how to keep our body and mind in balance by eating the correct foods for our constitution and having some simple daily habits and living the right lifestyle for our ‘true nature'. When we are in balance, we are more conscious and able to access our intuition to lead us on our Soul's journey. The key to optimal health and contentment are in our own hands” Website Elements of Ayurveda Podcast
Norman Elizondo is the Family Wellness Counselor at Open Sky. Norman's journey into the wilderness field began when his dying mother encouraged him to leave his finance career and "do something that would really help people." Norman shares his extraordinary journey from being an immigrant from the Philippines to growing up in the Chicago area to working in finance to leaving that to be a field guide at Aspen Achievement Academy. He would leave Aspen and become part of the founding team of Open Sky in 2006. From the Open Sky Website: Norman earned his BS in Business Management from the University of Illinois at Chicago and began his professional career in investment analysis. Following the death of his mother, he considered her parting advice about doing work that really helps people and began his career in wilderness therapy as a field instructor at Aspen Achievement Academy. As an immigrant from the Philippines, becoming educated and assimilating into American society has driven Norman to work hard, adapt, and feel a tremendous sense of gratitude for being a U.S. citizen. As such he has enjoyed tremendous opportunity; one of the largest and most meaningful was to help found Open Sky. Norman served as the first field guide for Open Sky, receiving the first student in May of 2006. Demonstrating both a command of wilderness skills and an aptitude for therapeutic skills, he moved quickly to being a senior field instructor and then a trainer for field instructors. The focus on family systems and parallel process with parents has been an inspiration and driving force in Norman’s time with Open Sky. He helped create the programming for the Wellness Weekends and has facilitated these weekend intensives since the very first one in 2006. He takes a special pride and pleasure in helping parents understand their child’s work at Open Sky and developing the same basic skill sets of emotional regulation, assertive communication, and effective boundary holding that are so crucial in parenting. In addition to the Wellness Weekends, he facilitates the parent support calls, graduations, meditation instruction, and field guide training. Meditation has been a cornerstone of Norman’s life. His years of practice deeply influence his ability to work with people in crisis and to train others how to develop their confidence and emotional resilience to work with challenging populations. With prior study and practice in the Southeast Asian Theravada tradition beginning in 1995, Norman has been studying and training as meditation instructor in the Tibetan tradition since 2001. He is a certified meditation teacher with the Dharma Ocean Foundation. As part of his commitment and ongoing training in meditation, Norman spends 4-6 weeks each year in retreat along with his daily practice. With most of his vacation time spent in retreat, he finds it important to make time in his daily life for exercise, playing music—DJing, singing, and drumming—and getting into the outdoors just for fun.

Guest Noelle Agape TV host of The Infinite Wellness Show, health and wellness counselor, transformational coach, certified in Quantum Energy Medicine, certified in NLP, Neuro Linguistic Programming, knowledgeable about Quantum Physics and Deepak Chopra, certified Energy Healer and international speaker discusses with host Carol the tools of navigating our internal GPS. How many of you have used the word GPS spiritually? What does it mean to you? How can we navigate our GPS so that we will not get stuck with our internal obstacles? How can our internal GPS pave our road and get to our yellow brick road of our life's journey? Is our spiritual GPS our inner voice, our gut, the voice of our heart, or our soul? Do our angels speak to us or are the signs or synchronicity there for us to follow? Noelle believes that our GPS is our guiding tool to connect to our higher self. She believes that it is our highest power tool, the bond that we have with the Creator or the Divine. How does divine intervention play into this? Is it part of our GPS? What should we do when we are in the crossroads of life? Noelle tells Carol that the universe speaks to us every day. It is a matter of tapping into our intuition without any ego or negative thoughts or feelings. The key is to quiet the mind and heart to receive our highest direction for our lives. Do you believe that we are always co creating with the Creator. Is the bond a dance with the same rhythm and beat. What is the difference between a sacred contract and soul contract? Can we become aware to it? How does the soul direct us? Do you ever speak to your soul? Noelle Agape believes that we are here to expand. How does freedom or courage play into this? Noelle believes that the universe is abundant and that we are the highest vibration. Carol believes that our spiritual partner is the Creator and that the signs or our internal GPS leads us to our highest purpose and to the depth of our wisdom. Noelle Agape speaks with such passion on this topic and she conveys her messages to many retreats all over the world! It's The Matter of the Heart with guest Noelle Agape and host Carol Olivia.
Recognize your connection with lack and abundance, how those potentials play a factor in your life, and what it means to move toward abundance. Developing an abundance mindset while managing inevitable lack and suffering is a test of character, it's a test of your soul! It's our personal responsibility to move and orient ourselves to an ideal. There is a connection between your ideal and inner worth. Inner worth is a remembrance of what we already have. When it's searched for externally, it becomes an endless pursuit until we remember that worth is already present within ourselves. We are capable to lead a life of purpose driven by wholeness. Tune in to deep dialogues by Shannon Autumn, a Wellness Counselor based in Las Vegas, about soul development, healing, mental and emotional health, spirituality, movement, energy, personal responsibility, mindfulness, and self-care. Do we have many souls and if so how do they affect our presence. Noelle discusses with Carol how to embrace our soul's mission. They talk about joy and how important it is for your fulfillment? Is it possible for the soul to expand? Did you ever think that fear can be a blessing? Can it be a motivator? What is formulated by the age seven? What age are our beliefs connected with our consciousness? What are some of the methods that are used to connect to the soul? Can dreams be a tool for a deeper understanding of ourselves?
