"Il fuoco di Venezia" di Giovanni Montanaro e "Tanto domani muori" di Antiniska Pozzi "Il fuoco di Venezia" di Giovanni Montanaro (Feltrinelli) racconta oltre cinquant'anni d'amore fra una donna e un uomo, accomunati dalla stessa passione: fabbricare vetro. Siamo nella laguna veneziana, a Murano, patria del vetro soffiato, alla fine degli anni Sessanta. Elena gestisce la Fornace dell'Est ed è l'unica donna in questo ruolo, perché nella produzione del vetro per secoli alle donne era stata concessa solo la produzione di perle. Elena ha ereditato dal padre la fornace, ama profondamente il suo lavoro, è una donna tenace e nello stesso tempo creativa. Si presenta un giorno Tiziano, dieci anni più giovane di lei, che vuole diventare mastro vetraio. Fra mille difficoltà (Elena fra l'altro è sposata e all'epoca aveva un figlio) e in modo assolutamente altalenante, i due portano avanti questa relazione fatta di amore reciproco, ma soprattutto di passione professionale. Per entrambi la Fornace dell'Est è un luogo dell'anima ed un posto dove entrambi si sentono realizzati al cento per cento come persone e come professionisti. L'incontro fra queste due persone diverse per provenienza (lei è borghese e frequenta l'alta società veneziana, lui è del sestiere popolare di Castello, con il papà che si ammala di tumore per aver lavorato in fabbrica a Marghera) è decisivo per le loro vite. Tutto è raccontato da una voce narrante, la cui identità si scopre solo verso la fine del romanzo.Nella seconda parte parliamo di "Tanto domani muori" di Antiniska Pozzi (Harper Collins). La storia di una famiglia proletaria che parte a metà degli anni Ottanta a Milano, ma che spesso va indietro nel tempo per far luce sull'infanzia e sul contesto dal quale provengono i genitori, Adriana e Nino. Adriana non ha studiato, ma ha sempre aspirato a una vita borghese, non riesce a prendersi cura dei tre figli, ha diversi esaurimenti nervosi, è spesso violenta con i figli. Nino è un operaio, in nero, presso un garage che lui preferisce definire officina. Ma al centro di questa storia c'è soprattutto Anna, che nel 1985 ha sei anni. A scuola viene presa in giro, la maestra le ripete "Non sei abbastanza". Parla poco, perché sa che il lessico famigliare è una lingua "sporca", non corretta. Attraverso la vita di Anna, si racconta la storia di una famiglia, ma anche di un'epoca e di uno scontro di classe.

For this episode, I spoke to Wendy Salkin, a philosophy professor at Stanford University, about informal political representatives: people who speak or act on behalf of groups in the political sphere without being elected to do so. Familiar examples include Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Malala Yousafzai, and Greta Thunberg.Informal political representatives raise awareness of issues and bring about political change, often achieving things that people with more formal power cannot or do not. But their existence also raises some ethical questions. Do they need to be authorised? Can they be held accountable? Stress is a reality for so many people these days, and yet, the path forward through it can seem so complex, and sometimes even debilitating.  In this episode we talk about how we think stress is in our heads, but when we pay attention, we notice how it show up in the body.  The impact of stress can be profound – and often also shows up in the body. Susan vulnerably discusses how stress for her was internal first, then led to back problems, hair loss, and other embodied signs that she couldn't ignore any more.  For Susan the simple act of cutting her hair was a way to take her power back.   Many of us struggle with the dangerous desire to be perfect  believing it will create comfort.  We are led to believe that perfectionism and doing it all “just right” will create more control. This conversation  challenges that ideal with the power of surrender.     Surrendering to your life can be hard when you have been driven by the need for perfection – especially if you've been messaged that it is the only way to feel safe.  This episode invites you to lean into surrender as a way to manage  anticipatory anxiety – as a step to moving toward surrender, with a reminder that the idea of doing it is actually harder than the action. Surrendering is about accepting where you are RIGHT NOW. You can be here and now and be okay. You do not have to force things. As we enter Year 3 of the pandemic, we check back in with intensive care unit nurse Jessica Montanaro, whom we first met in 2021. Now sick with covid and facing a ticking clock on her return to work, she reflects on the past year and the present struggles of her profession. Read More:Last year we brought you the story of Jessica Montanaro, an intensive care unit nurse from New York City who found herself battling exhaustion and grief as New York became the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, and she cared for wave after wave of patients. Today, we're going back to Montanaro. Producer Bishop Sand reached out to her earlier this year to see how she was faring as we approached Year 3 of the pandemic. He discovered that Montanaro was sick with covid. Because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and New York state had shortened their recovery recommendations for health-care workers sick with the coronavirus, Montanaro was expected back at work after just five days — something she was not happy about. During her recovery, she talked to Sand daily. She shared stories of her struggles as a nurse over the past year and described her efforts to address the critical staffing shortages that have affected her team and profession as a whole.
