RU336: BLANCHE BARTON ON DANCING IN THE GRAVEYARD: DEATH IMAGERY IN SATANISM & CARL ABRAHAMSSON PRESENTS MEMENTO MORI FOREVER: https://renderingunconscious.substack.com/p/ru336-psychoanalysis-art-and-the Join Rendering Unconscious at Substack: https://renderingunconscious.substack.com Rendering Unconscious episode 336. For this episode, we have two lectures from the Psychoanalysis, Art and the Occult series of events at Morbid Anatomy Museum: Dancing in the Graveyard: Death Imagery in Satanism by Blanche Barton and Memento Mori Forever by Carl Abrahamsson. Dancing in the Graveyard: Death Imagery in Satanism by Blanche Barton “Life is the great indulgence—death, the great abstinence. Therefore, make the most of life—HERE AND NOW!” So reads a phrase from the opening chapter of The Satanic Bible. But if Satanism, true Satanism as defined by Anton LaVey in 1966, is a profoundly life-loving religion, why all the black candles, skulls, and funerary trappings? The use of a coffin in the ceremony known as “L'air Epais—the Ceremony of the Stifling Air”, for example, goes well beyond a simple memento mori to remind ourselves how fleeting is our time here on Earth. The coffin becomes, like the Hanged Man in the tarot, a symbol of both death and transformation. Memento Mori Forever by Carl Abrahamsson For the human individual, there is no greater arbiter than death itself. Anxiety and fear are the very shadow-side fundaments of human religiosity, and nowhere is magical thinking as present as in thoughts and emotions touching upon (the fear of) death. One reason why human neurosis reaches ever new heights in contemporary culture is our distancing from death itself, and our painting ourselves into a corner of abstracted and compensatory imagination. How to cope? How to improve this highly detrimental neurosis and its dangerous side effects, such as monotheism? Carl Abrahamsson is a Swedish author, photographer, and filmmaker. He is also the editor and publisher of the highly renowned anthologies in The Fenris Wolf series. https://amzn.to/4bFDWnP Follow him at Linktree: https://linktr.ee/CarlAbrahamsson The Fenris Wolf Substack: https://thefenriswolf.substack.com An Art Apart Substack: https://anartapart.substack.com Blanche Barton is the present Magistra Templi Rex of the Church of Satan, having been a member for 45 years. Known for their love of the macabre, Ryan and Regina take listeners on a journey through their lives as collectors of strange and mysterious artifacts. From an early fascination with anatomy and “exploded skulls” to encounters with objects like a ritualistic kapala skull, their passion for unusual relics only grew. The story begins with the haunting “Witch's Door,” discovered in the chaotic apartment of their late friend, former NYPD sergeant and secretive collector, Nick Parmesan. Unraveling Nick's disordered trove, Ryan and Regina delve into the ethics, artistry, and allure of collecting oddities that straddle the line between life and death. Join us as we explore the strange, beautiful, and haunting world behind The Witch's Door. GUESTS: Ryan Matthew Cohn is an artist, curator, art collector, and the Oddities Flea Market cofounder. His artwork has been exhibited at the Museum of Arts and Design, Armour-Stiner Octagon, House, Copro Gallery, Last Rites Gallery, Morbid Anatomy Museum, Roq La Rue Gallery, and more. RU259: CHAWEON KOO PRESENTS “ANGELS, DEMONS & KETAMINE” This episode is a recording of a presentation by Chaweon Koo on “Angels, Demons & Ketamine” at Morbid Anatomy Museum online June 11, 2023. https://www.morbidanatomy.org Mysticism often involves sacred plants and mind-altering substances to aid in ritual journeying. The futurist version may also involve brain hacking via ketamine, mixed with the chaos magick and animism inherent in intense psychology modalities like EMDR and Internal Family Systems (IFS). Occultist and writer Chaweon Koo joins Vanessa Sinclair and Carl Abrahamson to discuss where bio-hacking, 8 esoteric body circuits, a scientist who talks to dolphins, and modern modes of inner journeying and magick intertwine. Chaweon Koo is a writer at the intersection of pop culture, the occult, and futurism. Her TikTok @chaweonkoo is one of the most popular occult accounts on the platform. This week, I'm thrilled to bring back my friend Dr. Sabina Stent. A freelance writer & speaker from Birmingham, UK, who specializes in women artists, surrealism, & visual culture, Sabina's interests include the feminist surrealist avant-garde, artists' lives & legacies, cinematic subversion, historical true crime, & surrealism in Los Angeles. She has lectured online & in person for the Philosophical Research Society, Morbid Anatomy Museum, The Last Tuesday Society, & The London Drawing Group. Her bylines include Magnum Photos, Crime Reads, & AnOtherMagazine. Additionally, Sabina has contributed chapters to academic textbooks, & written liner notes essays for Blu-rary releases from the film distributors Indicator & Vinegar Syndrome. And she is also the author of the substack newsletter Love Letters During a Nightmare. Here Sabina Stent joins me to discuss a knockout quartet of heist movies in Watch With Jen's first episode on the crime subgenre since our very first season when Nikki Dolson & I took it on. In this great conversation, we open by championing our underseen 2018 favorite AMERICAN ANIMALS & then go back in time in time to take a look at the rest of our films in reverse chronological order, including THE BLING RING, OCEAN'S ELEVEN, & RESERVOIR DOGS. From the way that even the most perfect plans seem to go awry when you're dealing with variables you can't control in real life to acknowledging that these films seem to thrive thanks to the magical alchemy of outstanding ensembles, original screenplays, & visionary directors, fans of heist movies will cherish our return to the scenes of their favorite cinematic crimes. Rendering Unconscious episode 249. This episode is special in honor of Juneteenth. It's a recording of an event held June 19, 2022, as part of the Psychoanalysis, Art & the Occult series at Morbid Anatomy Museum, online. http://psychartcult.org https://www.morbidanatomy.org/events Animism for Apocalypse by Langston Kahn and Spirit Voices: The Mysteries and Magic of North Asian Shamanic Traditions by David Shi Langston Kahn is a Black, Queer, New York City based shamanic practitioner specializing in emotional healing and radical transformation. He stands firmly at the crossroads, his practice informed by Inner Relationship Focusing, initiations into traditions of the African Diaspora, the contemporary shamanic tradition of The Last Mask Community and the guidance of his helping spirits and ancestors weaving it all together. His new book is Deep Liberation: Shamanic Tools for Reclaiming Wholeness in a Culture of Trauma. Follow him at Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/langstonkahn/ David Shi talks about his new book Spirit Voices: The Mysteries and Magic of North Asian Shamanic Traditions, exploring the history and practice of shamanism. What is it? Where is it from? What do shamans actually do? He guides the audience through unfamiliar territory—the landscape of North Asia – and through what are largely hidden and unfamiliar traditions. This area, ranging from the Caspian Sea to the Pacific Ocean, is a vast region often described as the “Cradle of Shamanism” and where the word “Shaman” originates from. His book features history, first-hand experiential reports, mythology, and folklore to explore the spirits, spirituality, and practices of true shamanism. In addition to history and analysis of North Asian shamanism, Shi also provides practical information for those seeking to implement practices that are appropriate to non-initiates and outsiders to the culture. "Metallica: The $24.95 Book" features an in-depth look at Metallica's cultural significance with chapters devoted to each member, each album, touring, fashion, books, film, influences, fandom, and more, exploring the band's ideologies along the way. With over 125 million records sold worldwide, Metallica is the biggest metal band of all time. Four decades into their unparalleled career, Metallica is a massive cultural force who drastically changed the sound of popular music by creating their own rules. Yet for all their popularity, Metallica can seem impenetrable, raising more questions and inspiring more discourse as their mythos grows. Metallica questions run deeper than what people find on the internet. Metallica questions deserve a book. "Metallica: The $24.95 Book" by dedicated fan and music journalist Ben Apatoff is that book, honoring Metallica's history of fighting retail price gouging in the title. Apatoff provides an in-depth look at the band and their music that both die-hard fans and Metallica beginners can enjoy.Ben Apatoff is a New York writer and educator whose work has appeared in Metal Injection, MetalSucks and the Morbid Anatomy Museum. Concepts like "Psychic Vampire" and "The Balance Factor" soon became household terms in America and the rest of the world. His description of the ritual space as an "Intellectual Decompression Chamber" also hit home outside the strictly Satanic perimeters. As did the slightly later term "Occultnik", signifying a person who is lost within old structures of occultism without being able to see what's really of use on a practical, material level. LaVey's initial key works, The Satanic Bible and The Satanic Rituals, are great examples of creative appropriation and reformulation. But the two volumes of essays and maxims that followed much later, ie The Devil's Notebook and Satan Speaks, genuinely contain the essence of LaVey's wit and creativity. In these books, we find many fascinating topics: the integration of emotionally resonant music, stressing the ego, encouraging a sense of humour, artificial human companions, the total environment, the archetype of the villain, the third side of truth and much more. Join me for a darkside trip into the Satanic mind of Anton LaVey – magical innovator! Strange Women. Pop culturally speaking, they truly are the spice of life. But what qualifies a performer or character as strange? And what is it about these women that provoke such strong responses in us? Joining us to discuss all this and more are two experts in the field. Twin sisters Tonya Hurley and Tracy Hurley Martin are the hosts of the Stories of Strange Women Podcast, where they’ve interviewed everyone from Elvira to Kate Pierson of the B-52s to Lydia Lunch to Parker Posey. And they are also quite accomplished Strange Women in their own rights. Tonya is the New York Times bestselling author of the Ghostgirl young adult book series and the Blessed trilogy. And Tracy was the co-founder of Brooklyn’s incredible Morbid Anatomy Museum. On this episode, we talk about the all the strange women who inspired us to become the weirdoes we are today!
What do people do with all the memorabilia they've collected over the years? Martie McNabb's Memories Out of the Box creates life story memorabilia boxes to tell the stories behind the stuff that matters most to us. And her show and tell events harnesses the power of face-to-face connection to foster an interest in telling our life stories. How she started her career as a life story professional Martie had careers as a NYC public school teacher and a sign language interpreter before she opened her life story business, Memories Out of the Box. At Show and Tales, Martie tells stories with people's stuff. You can, too." A lost photo spurred the creation of Memories Out of the Box, Martie's company that tells people's stories through the objects they've collected through the years. Martie gathers, organizes, and edits memorabilia for busy individuals who value what they've collected but don't have the time, energy, or creative vision to create a legacy item. Memories Out of the Box Martie has offered many types of products, but most clients want bespoke heirloom scrapbooks. [Hint: Show your clients what's possible, then give them what they want.] Listen as we talk about: creating an interactive experience with scrapbooks new technology for oversized scans Flippal for mobile scanning and making several passes and stitching together images for larger pictures the demise of letter-writing the Letter Writers Alliance Martie's clients work long hours and don't have the time for long meetings. They feel guilty and overwhelmed by the memorabilia they've collected and neglected, and are relieved to find Martie to create something for them. Martie spends time going through their photos and other memorabilia, and has developed an intuitive sense of where the stories lie. (Listen to Dennis Ledoux on the Myers-Briggs Personality Test, and being a feeler and an intuitive person.) [Hint: If photos aren't labeled, they can still be appreciated as works of art in an heirloom project.] How do clients find Martie? Martie started Memories Out of the Box with a store in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn (she no longer has the store). But now she finds that word-of-mouth is best. Ask previous clients to let others know about you. [Hint: Get testimonials from clients at the end of each project.] Her new marketing tool? Show and tell events. Show and Tales Most creatives don't like marketing themselves. And what we do doesn't lend itself to an easy elevator speech. Our first task is to build rapport with potential clients. We need to educate people who have never heard of doing life stories. Having a book to read at the end of the project is wonderful; what's surprising is the power of telling the story. It's a gift the storytellers give to themselves. Long sales cycle. It can take years of ruminating before someone decides to START on a project. Because Martie tells stories with people stuff, what better way to publicize Branded Saloon in Prospect Heights Brooklyn was the venue for her first show and tell event. Martie held it in the backroom. People were invited to bring any object that they wanted to show and share its story. She lived in the neighborhood so started by inviting friends. Then she reached out over Facebook and started a Meetup group (just like Chad Elliot discusses in this episode). Show and Tale: The Moth meets Antiques Roadshow Storytelling is huge in NYC (and elsewhere!). But storytelling events are more performative (think of shows like The Moth). Martie's Show and Tales are more like a cross between The Moth and Antiques Roadshow—without the competition or even having a developed story. Show and Tales are more about story-sharing than story-telling. They can be held around a table, at a coffee house or library. Or they can be held at venues with a stage. Regardless, everyone feels welcome. Martie has had anywhere from 0 to 50 people show up. One of her best-attended events was in conjunction with the Morbid Anatomy Museum. She also did a themed event Show and Tale called “Scars, Tats, and Piercings” at a bar in Lower Manhattan. Each participant talks for 3-5 minutes, relating something about the item they brought. It is NOT meant to be a well-developed story, so even people who are afraid of public speaking should feel comfortable. This isn't about performing; it's about connecting with others. [Hint: During a traditional life story interview, give the storyteller a prop and the conversation almost always flows easier.] Martie is taking Show and Tale on the road! She bought an RV and will travel around the US for a year or two, hosting shows; she's also starting to host them virtually. The first one was in honor of Mother's Day—Mothers, Mementos and Memories. Sign up for Martie's newsletter to learn about her Show and Tale events. Martie will be offering a certification and licensing program for life story professionals to host their own Show and Tale events. She'll also partner with them for events while she's traveling the country. Join her! Have fun, go traveling, and do marketing in a creative way. I'm a sucker for beautiful journals.] If you enjoyed the show, leave us a review on iTunes. And if you have any ideas to share or questions about this episode, share them in the comments. Thanks! Ever wondered what a taxidermist does exactly? I interviewed Katie Innamorato, a Taxidermist-in-Residence at The Morbid Anatomy Museum in Brooklyn, New York, to find out. Innamorato's passion for animals inspires her art, granted a messy form that requires dissecting rats and roadkill. The meat of her work (terrible pun intended)is tackling the questions of how humans relate to animals. Katie also works with flora and fauna, often integrating them with her anthropomorphic art. An animal lover, Katie says she prefers to use roadkill, scrap skins from other taxidermists, previously frozen feeders, problem animals, and donated skins. She also teaches classes which regularly sell out. I know, it's an audio interview, so to see the photos we discussed, please check out Katie's website. (www.afterlife anatomy.com). Our interview was taped live at Joe's Pub and you can hear Employee of the Month's house band, Shockwave and Jelly Donut the Intern, chiming in. Our next live taping is February 19th, so get on the...
