Dr Ali Domar is a world-renowned Harvard scientist and scholar who has devoted her career to helping couples live through infertility in a better way and ‘lots of pregnancies are the happy result’ she says. In this episode, we find out what mind and body means, how it can help you get pregnant and hear many stories about couples who’ve conceived despite all the odds after going through her mind body programs for infertility. We chat to her about how she started out in this field and how over the years she has created a wealth of experience and scientific studies into the impact of mind body programs on infertility patients. Dr Domar was fundamental in setting up the Domar Centre for Mind Body Health and is the director of Mind Body programs at Boston IVF. We delve into what ‘mind body programs for infertility’ comprise, what makes them successful and how you can apply some of these techniques in your own lives. We talk about the complex relationship between stress and infertility and why relaxation is a central component of the mind body programs for infertility patients. Dr Domar shares the complexities of natural pregnancy and IVF success rates but how over the years, her research has consistently demonstrated a doubling of these rates when mind body programs are employed. This infertility story is so incredible, it’s almost unbelievable. Shen and her husband battled through 6 recurrent miscarriages, international surrogacy, change of laws mid-way through and then miraculously got pregnant naturally, TWICE! Hear it all here We’ve had many incredible fertility stories featured on the Your Fertility Hub podcast, but I think Shen’s is one of the most courageous stories that demonstrates their willingness to NEVER GIVE UP! Following the pain of 6 recurrent miscarriages, culminating in a week-long miscarriage where she gave birth to her fetus at home alone - they knew they had to look for another way. Following the miscarriages, international surrogacy with their own egg and sperm seemed the best way forward. At the time, Thailand was the best option for international surrogacy from Australia and Shen tells of all the ups and downs, crazy running around for medication, flights and timing it all. When in Thailand after the birth, disaster struck. Another couple decided to only take one of their twins back home, not only leaving their other baby but also a country in complete lockdown over surrogacy. Everything stopped. Shen and her husband were staying in a hotel will dozens of other parents with surrogate babies - all at different stages. As their son was a full genetic child of theirs, they were allowed home with their baby but they were one of the lucky ones. When thoughts turned to having a sibling, they steeled themselves for the long journey ahead. Unbeknownst to Shen, her husband had been researching options. He didn’t want to go back to the days of recurrent miscarriages, international surrogacy was again the answer and his research led them to Russia. Just as they were collecting together winter clothes to cope with the minus 20-40 degree chill in Russia, Shen’s Mum planted a seed in her mind - what if she could conceive and carry a pregnancy naturally? As they’d never had trouble getting pregnant, Shen quickly conceived but never believed it would hold. Continually delaying their trip to Russia as the pregnancy progressed, they still never relaxed believed this was possible. Drama ensued at 31 weeks when Shen awoke covered in blood - they feared the worst. Somehow, she managed to hold on to her little boy until 38 weeks. Even more miraculously, they then went on to have a little girl completely naturally too. In this interview, Shen opens up about this incredible story of recurrent miscarriages, international surrogacy and how amazing it was to carry and give birth to two children after their earlier ordeals. She shares how she coped and her advice for anyone else out there struggling right now. Finally, Karenna asks all listeners to join the FREE Fertility Toolbox so they are the first to hear about the upcoming launch of our new ‘Your Fertility Toolbox’ app and how it can support you to find a better way to live through infertility. In this episode: How they battled through 6 recurrent miscarriages before looking at other options IVF couldn’t help them International surrogacy options for Australians The process of international surrogacy with your genetic child in Thailand Coincidences and how the stars aligned for them The brutal change of law in Thailand that nearly stopped them bringing their baby home Investigating surrogacy in Russia for baby number 2 The idea that she could carry a pregnancy to term turned into a reality How they went on to have 2 natural pregnancies Talking to your child about surrogacy Advice for anyone going through infertility right now You may also like: Bianca’s strategies for surviving infertility and surrogacy - https://yourfertilityhub.com/podcast-37-bianca-surrogacy/ International surrogacy options for Australians - https://yourfertilityhub.com/international-surrogacy-options-for-australians/ A holistic approach to recurrent miscarriage and pregnancy loss - https://yourfertilityhub.com/holistic-approach-recurrent-miscarriage-and-pregnancy-loss/ Links mentioned in the podcast: Remembering babies lost through miscarriage - https://yourfertilityhub.com/podcast-11-remembrance-for-miscarriage-and-baby-loss/ Gratitude and fertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/podcast-8-gratitude-can-dramatically-improve-feel-today/ Email Karenna directly at karenna@yourfertilityhub.com Your Fertility Toolbox - Free resources, tools and exclusive community for emotional support during infertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/join-toolbox/ Connect with us on social media: Join us on social media for our regular inspiration and information and so much more! Tara’s journey began like many others - trying from month to month with no success. Finally a positive pregnancy test but then miscarriage shattered their hopes. Living in a rural town in North Dakota, they kept quiet about their silent heartbreak and progressed through more appointments and rounds of IUIs. Each failure adding to their sadness and the mileage on their car with doctors being over 2 hours drive away. Everything seemed to be going against them. As a nurse herself, Tara was only too well what the numbers meant. Sometimes being a medical practitioner going through infertility can be an advantage - you can interpret your results, you know the right people and you can anticipate the next steps. However, sometimes this increased knowledge can go against you emotionally. In the end, they decided to take a break which coincided with a fabulous career opportunity for Tara - a fellowship in Washington (which would prove really helpful later on…!) The break really helped and renewed they progressed and their Everlasting Hope paid off - they conceived a healthy baby boy. We chat about the drama of a placental rupture at 32 weeks, an emergency caesarean and how she felt during this pregnancy after the 3 years of infertility. Infertility never really left Tara and inspired by the need for more local fertility support and information she put forward a bill in Washington and formed the not-for-profit ‘Everlasting Hope’. Everlasting Hope was created to reach out to the general community in support of North Dakota infertility patients. Everlasting Hope strives to provide assistance to patients who must pay out-of-pocket for prescribed medical care and to raise awareness that that Infertility is a treatable medical condition and that the community as a whole benefit when these patients have access to medical care. Finally, we chat together about how we wish that emotional support was woven into every couple’s fertility journey and how Your Fertility Hub is on a mission to make that happen. Karenna asks all listeners to join the FREE Fertility Toolbox so they are the first to hear about the upcoming launch of our new emotional support programs aiming to address this need. Before we start, both Kate and I want to warn you - the film is pretty full-on! If you’re going through fertility treatment right now, you may wish to not watch it right now or pick your time to watch it. What we mean is - it very accurately portrays the stress and emotion of IVF and as a viewer that’s quite confronting. But that’s one reason it’s been such a huge success, winning multiple awards, and a success in opening up the much-needed conversation about just how ‘brutal’ fertility treatment can be on your emotions. In this revealing podcast episode, Kate opens up about her journey through 6 IUIs and 1 IVF cycle to finally get pregnant with her second daughter. She opens up about the impact on her emotions, the absolute need for emotional support/therapy and how she coped with the massive rollercoaster that is infertility. Kate shares how she used her creative energy as an outlet during treatment, transplanting her experience of IVF into a film script and how helpful that was for her. After fundraising and two hectic days of filming in downtown New York, the film was launched to much acclaim, followed by another highly successful online launch. We discuss how one of the most wonderful effects of the film was how people responded by telling Kate their stories, which they’d never shared before. Or for the people in her life to reach out and say how they never understood what it was truly like for someone to go through fertility treatment and how grateful they are to know have that knowledge so they can go on to support others in their lives. I truly encourage everyone to watch this film and share with those around you. The more we can open up the stigma (and shame as Kate calls it) around infertility - we can help those going through it to feel less alone, more supported and more understood by society in general and those close to them. In this episode: Meet award-winning filmmaker Kate Phelan Her fertility journey IUI success the first time Not so lucky the second time - 6 x IUIs + 1 IVF How infertility impacted Kate and her family The birth of the ‘Visit57’ film How Visit 57 is opening up the conversation about infertility You may also like: EP23 - Managing emotions during IVF - https://yourfertilityhub.com/managing-emotions-ivf/ EP42 - Paige’s heartbreaking journey through IVF & Beyond - https://yourfertilityhub.com/podcast-42-paige/ EP2 - Stress & Fertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/podcast-episode-2-stress-fertility/ Links mentioned in the podcast: Watch Visit 57 here - https://www.shortoftheweek.com/2018/06/06/visit-57/ More about Kate and her work here - https://katephelan.net/ Email Karenna directly at karenna@yourfertilityhub.com Fertility Coaching - Book your call here - https://yourfertilityhub.com/fertility-coaching/ Your Fertility Toolbox - Free resources, tools and exclusive community for emotional support during infertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/join-toolbox/ Connect with us on social media: Join us on social media for our regular inspiration and information and so much more! Most women going through infertility aren’t very kind to themselves - they spend hours in their own heads being really mean - thinking things like: “I’m never going to pregnant” and “everyone around me is getting pregnant, it will never be my turn.” This is creating a reality of sadness, anger, jealousy and loads of other emotions and making every day living - absolute hell! It’s possible to think differently. It takes work and regular practice but you can think more positively, even when you’re not pregnant yet or your situation hasn’t changed. In this episode, we tell you how. Firstly, Karenna starts by sharing she has a couple of very rare spots open for fertility coaching - get more information and book your first call here. Secondly, listeners are encouraged to join up to the FREE Toolbox as an exclusive offer is being launched soon and only Toolbox members will be invited in! Exciting! How to refresh your thinking about your infertility: Awareness - everything always starts by identifying what thoughts aren’t healthy for you - what thoughts are causing you stress and sadness. The best way to do this can be journaling your thoughts. Writing them out each day and then you can start to identify common thoughts. Soon you will become aware of them all the time and note when you are triggered to think that way. You’re also encouraged to add a small gratitude practice when journaling - just think of 3 things that day you are grateful for. Start small and build-up Forgiveness - Some of our negative thinking comes from build-up resentment towards ourselves or others so we talk about ways to forgive. We talk about writing a letter to someone in your life you’re feeling angry towards, waiting 3 days and deciding if you wish to send it, edit it or throw it away. You may also need to forgive yourself for some things. Choose your thinking - ask yourself what you would like to be thinking about instead of those negative thoughts. Get support - it’s hard to do this alone so talk it out with a loved one or find external support like a therapist of a fertility coach In this episode: Find out how you can press refresh on your fertility thinking Identifying negative and unhealthy thoughts Forgiveness ‘Instead thinking’ Who to turn to for support You may also like: EP17 - Finding direction on your fertility journey - https://yourfertilityhub.com/finding-direction-fertility-free-meditation/ EP16 - Goal setting during infertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/podcast-16-setting-goals-fertility/ EP26 - Jealousy - https://yourfertilityhub.com/podcast-26-jealousy-infertility/ Links mentioned in the podcast: EP15 - Changing your negative thought patterns to boost your natural fertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/podcast-15-changing-negative-thoughts-to-improve-your-natural-fertility/ EP 8 - Gratitude and Fertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/podcast-8-gratitude-can-dramatically-improve-feel-today/ Fertility Coaching - Book your call here - https://yourfertilityhub.com/fertility-coaching/ Your Fertility Toolbox - Free resources, tools and exclusive community for emotional support during infertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/join-toolbox/ Connect with us on social media: Join us on social media for our regular inspiration and information and so much more! You know your story off by heart - X years TTC, number of months disappointed, number of cycles, FSH, AMH, Number of Day 5 blastocysts etc. You could repeat the facts in your sleep. That’s not the real story though. What’s your real fertility story? The one you tell yourself late at night and in those moments you allow your mind to worry over and over. Quite different eh?! Examples of real fertility stories: It’s my fault we’re struggling to get pregnant, my partner should just leave me and find someone who can give him a family I don’t deserve to get pregnant It will never happen for us My sister struggled to conceive, it took them 8 years. It will take us the same or longer In this episode, we give examples of real fertility stories and illuminate how unhealthy this internal dialogue can sometimes be. We talk about how our stories are just that - an interpretation of events and experiences and in impermanent state of mind. We discuss how they can be very subjective - for example, your partner could view your fertility journey completely differently to you. Finally, we talk about how these stories can be changed and what strategies you can use to become aware of your real story and move forward to a more positive one. Steps to help change your story: Awareness - start journaling your thoughts and look for patterns or where you seem to get stuck. Listen to what you’re saying to yourself on the inside that might differ from what’s actually happening on the outside Get critical - it’s time to challenge your story. Remember it’s just a state of mind and you can change it. Every time you hear something you don’t like or is just a thought that will make you unhappy - challenge it! Mindfulness and Meditation - once you become aware of your thoughts around your story, go deep within to really analyse these and find some peace in the present moment. Connect with what’s happening in your life right now - not projecting forward or going over old ground In this episode: Find out the real story you are telling yourself Understand the difference between the story you are telling others and the stories you are likely telling yourself Listen to examples of real fertility stories Learn the steps to overcome any negative stories You may also like: EP15 - Changing your negative thought patterns to boost your natural fertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/podcast-15-changing-negative-thoughts-to-improve-your-natural-fertility/ EP4 - Priya’s fertility story - https://yourfertilityhub.com/podcast-4-interview-priya-seeking-second-opinion-fertility/ EP19 - Poppy’s emotional fertility journey and relationship saver - https://yourfertilityhub.com/poppys-fertility-story/ Links mentioned in the podcast: EP39 - Coping with Guilt - https://yourfertilityhub.com/podcast-39-guilt-during-infertility/ EP2 - Stress & Fertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/podcast-episode-2-stress-fertility/ EP26 - Jealousy during infertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/podcast-26-jealousy-infertility/ Fertility Meditations & Workbooks available to purchase - https://yourfertilityhub.com/shop/ Your Fertility Toolbox - Free resources, tools and exclusive community for emotional support during infertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/join-toolbox/ Connect with us on social media: Join us on social media: Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/yourfertilityhub Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/yourfertilityhub/ Pinterest - https://www.pinterest.com.au/yourfertilityhub/ YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbjEG761nvI3WNT9J3j0IYw For more insight, subscribe to the show for regular episodes and please leave a review on i-tunes so we can share the message and help more women find their way through and out of infertility. https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/your-fertility-hub/id1281991003?mt=2
There are so many areas that could be causing guilt on a fertility journey but we don’t often talk about it. We feel guilty about feeling guilty! We shut away our feelings but they re-surface daily or are triggered by events and others. Infertility is a minefield of guilt with so many factors coming into play and it’s hard to find your way through and to know what is real and what could be irrational. In this podcast episode, we discuss the common areas that cause guilt during infertility such as guilt over jealous feelings, guilt over resentment or anger towards a partner, guilt over not being able to provide a sibling for an only child, guilt over not starting trying sooner or guilt for all the money spent on fertility treatment. It’s endless and highly complex. We then discuss whether this guilt is unhealthy or healthy and what purpose guilt serves before finally presenting some strategies to help alleviate guilt such as changing habits/situations, using affirmations or meditations to change your thinking or communicating assertively with friends or family. Erin learned so much through her fertility journey and in this great interview she shares with you all she learned and wish she’d known. We talk through how she initially went into infertility very passively. It all felt so unexpected and she wasn’t accepting this was her path. Gradually as she moved from timed intercourse to IUIs to IVF she became more knowledgeable and empowered. Erin and her husband suffered many setbacks and sadly a miscarriage and chemical pregnancy along the way. Following a break after their second IVF cycle, Erin decided to build herself a support team - starting with a fertility acupuncturist and finally opening up to family and friends about what they were going through. This new approach led to the successful conception and birth of their son, who is now 5. Whilst enjoying parenting, they were plagued with that nagging feeling that they weren’t done, despite trying to tell themselves they were! Going back into the world of IVF more informed but without the right support team or ‘formula that worked’ for Erin resulted in another failed cycle. Finally, on the 5th cycle, did they get optimal numbers and despite a negative pregnancy test at the end, Erin knew with certainty she would get her baby with one of the frozen embryos. Happily, she did and her second son is now 2. Throughout the podcast, Erin touches on key lessons and these are now available to download in the FREE toolbox alongside many other great resources for the emotional side of infertility. Erin now helps other women going through infertility as a fertility coach based in Chicago, Illinois. One of our favourite podcast interviews yet! We’re lucky enough to interview a beautiful couple from the United States who open up and share about their secondary infertility story, their miscarriages and how they have grown together as a couple as a result. Shannon initially felt hesitant about speaking out about her secondary infertility for fear of being judged as she already has children, however now they are both taking on the role of speaking out about the pain and added complexity of secondary infertility and share the stories of compassion and support they have received in return. Jon also opens up about his role as ‘the man’ and how at times he has questioned his identity and become angry with God as a result of their losses and infertility. He candidly speaks about how he has learned the value of listening to Shannon and not trying to ‘fix’ their infertility. Finally, the couple shares their advice for other couples going through the ups and downs of secondary infertility and reiterate the important part that true listening has played in getting them through. In this episode: A quick chat about Christmas and link to download the free ‘Thriving through the holidays’ workbook Introduction to Jon & Shannon’s infertility journey Their shock at their two miscarriages How they are moving on from them and staying hopeful Jon discusses his role during infertility Anger and infertility Relationship skills - the importance of listening The couple’s advice for others going through infertility right now You may also like: EP19 - Poppy’s emotional journey through infertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/poppys-fertility-story/ The conflicting side of secondary infertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/conflicting-sides-secondary-infertility/ Rachael’s journey to completing her family - https://yourfertilityhub.com/inspiring-stories-rachael/ Links mentioned in the podcast: Shannon’s infertility blog ‘This infertility journey’ - https://thisinfertilityjourney.wordpress.com/ Your Fertility Toolbox - Free resources, tools and exclusive community for emotional support during infertility - https://yourfertilityhub.com/join-toolbox/ IVF Thrive online support course - https://yourfertilityhub.com/ivf-thrive/ Connect with us on social media: Join us on social media for our Monday motivational posts and Friday funnies and so much more! In this open episode, we talk about the thorny topic of feeling jealous during infertility. It’s incredibly common and can be really difficult to cope with at times. Learn 3 top strategies to help you reduce or mitigate jealous feelings and instead feel more empowered on your fertility journey. Firstly we talk about how normal it is to feel this way. When we open up about it, every person feels this way at some point and it’s important to normalise that. These feelings are valid and it’s ok to experience these emotions. In the podcast, international fertility coach, Karenna Wood, talks about how we can’t allow these thoughts to take up residence within us - that we need to feel them and let them go as they don’t serve our emotional wellbeing. It’s also important to know that these feelings don’t affect your identity- it doesn’t mean you have changed into a ‘nasty, jealous person’; it just means you are going through a really tough part of your life and jealousy is one way of coping with that. Listen in for 3 strategies to reduce any jealous feelings you might be having and in particular try out the ‘controversial’ third suggestion of having compassion for that other person. It’s a tricky one and we can’t always do it, but when we can start practicing thinking in this way - it can be really transformational. Finally, we talk about how jealousy is often an indication or reflection of grief, sadness and anger within you and give you some practical ways that you can start to process these emotions and be working on the root cause of the jealousy. In this episode: Jealousy during infertility - it’s normal! There’s a lot of conflicting advice out there about if you can exercise during infertility and particularly during fertility treatments like IVF and IUI. In this interview, we chat with Tedi Palmer - an infertility blogger who loves running and endured a 7-year fertility journey, about her journey to motherhood and her opinions on exercise and infertility. Tedi talks us through her incredible fertility journey and how she went through multiple failed IUIs and IVF cycles, suffered from conflicting advice and multiple tests. She talks us through her low ovarian reserve and her husband Chase’s low sperm count and motility and how they were offered a place on a clinical trial where Chase was given Zinc and Folic Acid which transformed his sperm count from below normal to over 39 million (normal is over 15 million). Tedi opens up about her depression and how this was exacerbated by her rounds of depo-lupron and how she received lots of conflicting advice and an insensitive diagnosis from her doctors “Your egg quality is so bad. I don’t think you’ll ever become a biological mother” We talk about how she continued running through her fertility journey, even running marathons in and around her IUI treatments and how at times she was told to stop running and tried another exercise like walking, hiking and barre. She talks about how hard it is to give up exercise when it’s a huge part of your life and how some doctors strictly say no and others say it’s ok. She mentions that studies show mixed results so there isn’t a conclusive evidence base to back up the advice given by doctors. * Please note this podcast is expressing personal opinions and knowledge around exercise and infertility and is not expressed as medical advice. * Tedi talks about what helped her cope with her miscarriage, how she educated herself more on her cycles, changed clinics and eventually decided as a couple to take a break and switch gears. Tedi & Chase switched their mental focus over to getting out of debt, she increased her weight slightly and then ran a half marathon and then did a huge hike. It was at this point that she got a positive home pregnancy test (HPT). She threw the test in the trash believing it to be a false positive but the next day got another positive. So the bleeding she experienced around the time of her big running events was actually implantation from a natural pregnancy. Finally, Tedi talks about her blogs and how she now supports women going through infertility on her blog and social media channels. “If I can run a marathon, I can have a baby!” And she did both! In this episode, Karenna talks to Dr Lora Shahine, a Reproductive Endrocronologist from Pacific North West Fertility in Seattle. As well as an IVF specialist, Dr Shahine is also the Director of the Center for Recurrent Pregnancy Loss and author of two books (see links below) In this in-depth interview, we delve into the whole range of approaches to recurrent miscarriage including medical, (TCM) Chinese medicine, lifestyle and emotional factors. We unwrap some of the confusion in this area and help you feel more confident in your next steps on your journey. We start by discussing the possible tests that can be performed to identify any possible anatomic, hormone, immune or genetic issues. Dr Shahine is keen to stress that in over 50% of cases an answer isn’t found from the tests and that the most common cause of miscarriages is a chromosome imbalance in the embryo. Dr Shahine then recommends discussing with your doctor some other approaches in early pregnancy such as taking aspirin or progesterone (a natural immunosuppressant), early ultrasounds and also for conception moving into IVF to enable selection of the embryos and elimination of genetic abnormalities. We also discuss research published by Dr Shahine that has shown a link between recurrent pregnancy loss and having diminished ovarian reserve so she encourages you to have your FSH and AMH levels checked too. It is believed that this is because the number and quality of eggs are lower with diminished ovarian reserve, leading to more chromosomal abnormalities and miscarriages. “Recurrent miscarriage can be a window into egg quality.” The interview goes on to discuss egg health and ways you can positively impact egg health through diet, supplements and reducing your exposure to environmental toxins and how a TCM practitioner can assist you to make these lifestyle changes and with specific supplements for you. Finally, we discuss the emotional aspect of multiple pregnancy losses and how women can often feel scared to try again, scared of tests showing a problem and scared of tests NOT showing a problem. We agree how important it is to build a solid team around you to support you on both the medical and emotional side. Dr Shahine concludes the interview referencing an excellent study that can help women and couples to have the confidence and resilience to ‘keep trying’ as the odds of achieving a healthy pregnancy remain high even after recurrent miscarriages. In this episode: What is recurrent miscarriage or pregnancy loss? The importance of grieving a loss What tests can be used to identify any possible medical reasons The most common reason for miscarriages Recommendations for trying again and early pregnancy How egg health and diminished ovarian reserve could be factors How TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) can help The importance of emotions in dealing with pregnancy loss and trying again Building a support team around you You may also like: EP11 - Finding ways to remember babies lost through miscarriage or late-term baby loss EP17 - Finding direction on your fertility journey (free meditation) Grief is just love with no place to go (Blog) Why is miscarriage still a dirty little secret (Blog) Links mentioned in the podcast: Your Fertility Toolbox - Free resources, tools and exclusive community for emotional support during infertility Dr Lora Shahine’s website and Instagram Dr Shahine’s excellent book on the topic ‘Not Broken: An approachable guide to miscarriage and recurrent pregnancy loss.’ ‘Planting the Seeds: An integrative approach to fertility care’ by Dr Shahine and Stephanie Gianarelli 1999 Brigham Study into pregnancy outcomes following recurrent miscarriages Connect with us on social media: Join us on social media for our Monday motivational posts and Friday funnies and so much more! In this episode, Karenna talks about the power of mindfulness. It’s not just a buzz word or only for the few - it’s now a mainstream technique that is scientifically-proven to raise emotional wellbeing and improve natural fertility. Most of us spend most of our thinking time in two places - the past and the future. We rehash past events, allow regrets to simmer or project forward into the future - often visualising the worst-case scenarios or catastrophizing our futures. It can get very overwhelming being ‘in your thoughts’ all the time. They feel like they have control and you feel like you’re losing it! Some people worry that by being mindful they are changing their approach to their fertility journey. Being mindful does not mean you are becoming passive or change how much you want that baby. Instead, it can make you feel better every day and improve your chances of conceiving too. We discuss some of the benefits of mindfulness and how free people feel when they start a regular practice and aren’t immersed in their thoughts. Karenna mentions studies that have found a positive impact on emotional wellbeing across the board when women are taught mindfulness. Women were found to feel stronger, more able to cope, increasingly self-compassionate and able to regulate their emotions. Excitingly, the studies also show an increase in the pregnancy rate and IVF success rates (e.g. recent example of a study here) So this is more than just a wellbeing factor, this is actually a tool you can use to boost your natural fertility and increase your chances of conceiving. In the final part of the podcast, we talk about top tips for mindfulness and how to start with a quick example live on the podcast. In this episode: What is mindfulness? Why do we need mindfulness? Where are we spending our time if it’s not in the present moment? Caroline’s faith has led her through her own fertility journey and she now inspires thousands of others with her approach You are going to love meeting Caroline in this episode! Caroline is an infertility blogger who’s faith has supported her through her own 6-year battle with infertility and has led her to now inspire and support thousands of other women worldwide. Caroline’s fertility story started not long after her wedding when tests revealed she had a pituitary tumour and her husband azoospermia (no sperm). They were told it was impossible for them to have children naturally. She lent on God for guidance and he told her to write a blog. Several years later and this blog (In Due Time) has led her to now lead a huge wave of faith-based infertility support on her blog, social media channels and through ‘Moms in the Making’. This started as a support group in her home (which continues) but has now developed into 15 groups across North America, a new virtual group and an annual conference with people attending from all over the world. In this episode, we talk through Caroline’s personal fertility journey and also ask the tough questions about faith and fertility. She opens up about the hard days when she doesn’t always understand God’s path for her, but how her journey has actually deepened her faith and relationship with God. “I believe you can choose to run away from the Lord or run to him.” We talk about how even if you’re not religious, that infertility challenges you and becomes a spiritual journey. That the lack of answers drives you to question life’s fundamentals and your faith in life and love. She suggests that the fertility journey “can be good if we choose that” and offers her advice on how you can achieve this. She talks about not putting your life on hold, self-care and how important support and meeting other women TTC has been for her and how you can get involved. In this episode: Faith and Fertility - how to keep the faith and how your faith can support you How starting her blog has transformed her life Caroline’s personal fertility journey How even if you’re not religious yourself, you can find faith to sustain you on your journey Caroline’s advice to others The incredible role a support group can play for you You may also like: EP17 – Finding direction on your fertility journey (Free meditation) Top relationship tip during infertility (Free download) How gratitude can transform how you feel during your fertility journey Links mentioned in the podcast: Caroline’s Blog - ‘In Due Time’ Moms in the Making - A faith-based support group. In the first episode of 2018, we unashamedly jump on the January bandwagon and talk about setting goals. However, we do it in a very different way to what you might be used to. You may feel that setting goals during infertility is pointless as things change and you don’t have full control over your journey and destiny. We talk about how, of course, there are many elements out of our control but how there are also many that are within our control and by taking back control it can transform your fertility mindset and outcome. As a fertility coach, Karenna starts every coaching relationship in this way - by getting really specific about the areas each client would like to change and what it looks like when that change has happened. In this podcast, we walk you through several ways of setting goals for both your fertility lifestyle and also your fertility mindset. By setting goals, taking back control over some areas of your life and working on your mindset, it can literally transform your everyday experience of infertility AND (the exciting bit!!!) can actually improve your natural fertility through the power of the mind-body connection. So tune in to get specific about YOUR fertility goals and to supercharge your fertility journey. Grab a pen and paper if you like to take notes and don’t be afraid to hit pause and return to certain questions so you can fully tease out your goals and what it looks like when you achieve them! 2018 is going to be a big year for Your Fertility Hub. There will be lots more great tips and tools in the podcast, more great free resources in Your Fertility Toolbox and we’re asking you to get in touch if there’s anything you would like to know more about, want us to blog or podcast about and any way in which we can support you more on the emotional side of your fertility journey. In this episode: Setting goals for your fertility Why it’s important to set goals How to get really specific about your goals and actually visualise what achieving them looks like Asking specific fertility coaching questions and using real-life client examples to demonstrate what fertility goals sound like How goals can support your wellbeing during infertility and why that’s just as important as the outcome How the mind-body connection can bring about changes in your body when you change your mindset and help you create your most fertile state “Goals are like magnets, they attract the things that make them come true!” You may also like: EP15 - Changing your negative thought patterns to improve your natural fertility EP5 - 3 quick relaxation techniques for fertility calm How to relax during infertility - Your Fertility Toolbox members only with free downloads Links mentioned in the podcast: Fertility Coaching with Karenna Mind-Body Tools for Fertility EP1 - Why the emotional side of fertility is so important Your Fertility Toolbox - Free resources, tools and exclusive community for emotional support during infertility Connect with us on social media: Facebook Instagram Pinterest YouTube For more insight, subscribe to the show for regular episodes and please leave a review on i-tunes so we can share the message and help more women find their way through and out of infertility.
In the last episode of 2017, we talk about one of the greatest challenges during infertility - negative thinking. It’s a huge topic and this episode uses one simple technique to help you challenge some of your negative thoughts - simply being your own best friend. So we start by being aware of what some of your common negative thoughts are e.g. ‘This is never going to happen for us - I’m never going to get pregnant’ or ‘I’m not worthy of a baby’ or ‘My partner must resent me because it’s my fault we can’t conceive’ and using a thought journal to write them down. Then challenge that thought by saying to yourself what your best friend would say to you. Imagine your best friend is stood in front of you listening to your innermost thoughts and then responding. Everytime you start thinking in that way, listen to your inner best friend and you will quickly start to see a difference in how you feel. We also talk about the mind-body link and how thoughts actually create emotional and physical reactions in our bodies and how it can actually improve your health as well as your emotional well being when you start to become aware of your negative thoughts and being kinder to yourself. In this episode: Common negative thoughts whilst trying to get pregnant Becoming aware of your most common negative thoughts Using a thought journal to keep a check on what you are thinking Being your own best friend and responding to yourself just how your best friend would Learning to catch yourself thinking in a negative way How we can’t always challenge our thinking - sometimes we need to use distraction or other methods How your thoughts create a chemical and physiological reaction in your body and how positive thinking can actually improve your health You can’t choose a situation but you can choose how you RESPOND and how you THINK about it! Some fertility doctors and clinics are fantastic - so caring, you feel listened to and you couldn’t fault their treatment. Unfortunately, not all of them are. This time for the umpteenth time, I listened to a client telling me she feels like she’s just a number at her clinic and I decided to podcast some ideas of what you can do about it and importantly to give yourself the permission to do something about it. It’s such an emotional experience every time you visit your RE / FS/doctor or fertility clinic. Often you’ve been building up to appointments and treatments for weeks or even months. When you feel like the doctor is not really listening, like you’re just one of many couples on their treadmill and importantly you don’t feel ‘connected’ - it’s time for a change! It’s hard to change, it’s scary but so important. This is too important an issue to stay and stay silent. So what can you do about it? In episode 14, we talk through how to approach it and what to do if you want to change doctors or clinics. The main takeaway is that you deserve the best! Your goal of becoming parents is too important to be getting second best and hopefully, if you’re in this situation, this podcast gives you the motivation to make a change. In this episode: What I mean by being treated by just a number The business of running a fertility clinic How to approach your doctor or clinic if you’re not happy Why it’s so important to speak up and feedback What to do if you want to change fertility doctor or clinic How to review, recommend and feedback to help others make an informed decision about the doctor or clinic How together we can raise the bar in the fertility industry and make the emotional part of your treatment just as important last the medical side You may also like: EP1 - Why the emotional side of fertility is so important EP9 - Saying ‘NO’ whilst TTC How to relax more during infertility - Your Fertility Toolbox members only Is stress affecting your fertility - Your Fertility Toolbox members only Links mentioned in the podcast: EP4 - Interview with Priya where she talks about getting a second opinion and how that transformed her TTC journey - EP7 - Interview with Shiree where she talks about feeling just like a number at the clinic and how it’s taken her years to release she needs to seek support outside the clinic - Your Fertility Toolbox - Free resources, tools and exclusive community for emotional support during infertility - Connect with us on social media: https://www.facebook.com/yourfertilityhub https://www.instagram.com/yourfertilityhub/ https://www.pinterest.com.au/yourfertilityhub/ For more insight, subscribe to the show for regular episodes and please leave a review on i-tunes so we can share the message and help more women find their way through and out of infertility.
